You are a quick learner when it comes to learning new system applications. You are able to pull important clinical information from the chart to prove your case as in to why the patient continues to need hospital treatment. If you are working for an insurance company, you can use the same information but ensure that you are proficient in pulling important clinical information from reviews to support the insurance company’s continued coverage. Hey when I was the utilization role, I didn’t work from home. It was Monday through Friday. 8-4. But now that I have transitioned to Informatics I have a hybrid schedule.

Aww thank you for your kind words! Yes, it is beneficial to have your Master's degree but it is not necessary. It will make you more marketable when it's time to look for a job. Working in an acute care setting is another plus because it will allow you to understand the workflow as a nurse on the units. When you transition into Informatics, you will be more knowledgeable on how to improve the workflow in the EMR system. I hope this helps!

Thank you! First, it’s important to get some clinical experience in an acute setting. Employers prefer at least 3-5 years of clinical experience because you understand the workflow as a nurse and will be able to improve the workflow when becoming an informatics nurse. Definitely join an informatics committee at a hospital. This allows you to network and see what goes on in the background. You can also further your career by obtaining your Masters of Science in Nursing Informatics.

Utilization can be busy but it depends on how fast you work. I’ve always liked to get my work done early so I had downtime.

Aww thank you so much! I attended Grand Canyon University. It was an online program. It worked well with my schedule. I had a good experience there. I will tell you that when I obtain my degree I only had to complete a practicum at the end of the program but now I hear that you will need a preceptor and complete a certain amount of hours. Hi! Yes it’s definitely a benefit to have a background in med surgery or acute care. It helps you to be able to assist with the workflow in the EMR system. I went online to GCU for my Masters in Informatics. You’ll learn the actual skill on the job. It may take a while to find a job but I will say the nursing informatics demand has increased significantly since I got my degree. If your hospital has an informatics committee you should join.

Hi! If you are going for your health information management, you may not need to go for your Masters. Working strictly from home may delay your process. Does your company have an informatics committee? If so, you should join. Who educates staff on your EMR system? Try to find that contact so you can get involved. You never know, a position may open up and you’ll be the first to call. A masters isn’t required but it does make you more marketable.

Hey! It’s possible but you don’t have to go through all of that. I have some analysts in my department who aren’t nurses. Reach out to someone in that department and ask if they require you to have a nursing license.

Information systems is a bit different from nursing informatics. Nursing informatics specifically deals with the electronic medical record system and other systems that affect the clinical side of the hospital. Information systems is broad and covers many systems.

For a quick answer, I would suggest joining the informatics committee of your institution has one, become a super user for your electronic medical record system, and start applying to jobs. If you have acute care experience, you will be an asset to the department.
