01:45 that was glorious in all the wrong ways 😄
Hey BiZ, DW here, saw your post on the DBP forums about MAP28. I think you're right that the yellow key fight is damn difficult, definitely took me a few tries. The biggest problem is just how damn dangerous the afrits are, so you can't afford to camp a bit at the bottom of the stairs, they'll just float over you and hit you with the cluster of rockets. Without afrits this fight would be 100% more manageable.
Hey DW, thanks for the comment. Yeah this was the first fight that really kicked my ass. The problem is, what enemy would you replace the afrits with that the player couldn't one shot with the BFG when the closets opened and which would also be able to harass the player at the bottom of the spiral from way up above?
@UVFastUVFurious Good question, not easy to answer. I'd probably use either cacos or pain elementals. Yes I know you can oneshot them, but the point would be that you have to choose whether or not to spend 1-2 shots on them or save them for the archies. On top of that, if elementals are used, the lost souls spawned can still be annoying and potentially block you with fatal consequences. My point would be that overall it would defo be easier than with afrits but it's by no means clear cut, it's maybe the right amount of challenge and a slightly different dynamic.
pretty badass i've been playing since 95 and this is one wad that flew under my radar. thanks for the look at it and making the video.
Thanks for stopping by. This one has been very fun so far.
If you get the chance, check out the updated file. It plays a lot better. You don’t have to rely on the chainsaw. I think you’ll enjoy it a lot more.
I will for the next video
First! 👍
Hey, J-Force here, thanks again for playing Frayed. I did end up going back through these maps and adding just a touch of shells. E1M6 was a bit too tight I agree. I overlooked that. But that chainsaw man 😅 it works wonders when driven directly into the face of a cacodemon 🤣
no worries, hope you get something useful out of the videos
I did for sure, I ended up going through the entire wad and adjusting the ammo. The maps contain more ammo now and are better balanced. Your videos gave me a good visual on this.
My nome Clézio
No it isn't, it's my nome.
Yes
I know I was subscribed to you. I'm wondering, is this a second channel? I see nothing older than this.
ya. shhhh don't tell nobody.
what did this guy do for deserving a one year long ban??
Its a bit of an enigma
14:09 I noticed the Exit always faces the player, so I figured it would be an object that dies when you touch it (ie. has the TOUCHY flag) and ends the level that way. But from looking at the DeHackEd, it's actually a thing with a "melee attack" that instantly ends the level, via the Boss Brain/Romero Head's "BrainDie" action.
ahh, that makes sense.
Breaking News: Local Man Doesn't Much Care For Doom's Chainsaw He was quoted as saying, "Stop trying to make me chainsaw shit. I don't wanna' do it." Eye witnesses later reported that he publicly climaxed at the sight of a Super Shotgun. Chainsaw advocate groups are calling him "appalling" and "totally justified." More on this story as it develops.
Nice playthrough, you provide good commentary to your videos and i will follow your channel. Thanks for playing this set so i don't have to. To elaborate on my comments on the previous video... I have no intentions of roasting Joe Ilya, but i find it funny that he's pretty harsh and disrespectful on some cool maps from the recent DBP, after he released this low effort, amaterurish set. He talks a big talk of how mappers should be more creative, and design better abstract levels and better combat, but abstract alone doesn't make a map good, which is the case here... and on top of that, his combat design is terrible as well. Is he going to use the same excuse of "100 linedefs limitation" to defend his bad combat too? Then the obvious question is, why even make this if you know that 100 linedefs will result in bad looking levels that play poorly? And why make 20 of these things? No, no, no, i bet he's delusional enough to believe that he's made something good here. You don't simply make 20 maps if you're self-aware that your concept is terrible.
I was going to respond in the next video, but it came out pretty incoherent like an answer to a presidential debate lmao. I guess it depends on if the 100 lines restriction includes monster closets, which could be a pain in the ass. As to the why make it question, restriction projects are a pretty common theme (zone 300, 1k lines, congestion 1024, etc) and its probably a useful way to help keep your maps short and get them finished without getting too bogged down in detailing. I think its a fair point about not judging too harshly, especially if you are also putting out creative work. Always nice to have a little good will built up with the player base.
I let anonymous users on 4chan playtest the maps for me, and they weren't harsh about the maps at all. I was told by a few users that they liked it after playing the whole thing, and even found the story funny. So I have a reason to believe I made something of high quality. About the gameplay seeming bad in this video; I can't account for people being autistic against the chainsaw (I'm sorry BIZ, but it's true), and not bothering to pick the difficulty that gives them more supplies. I think you're just upset because I talked shit about your DBP map, in that case I'm sorry.
@@UVFastUVFurious Oh yeah, i agree, restriction project are awesome for the most part, but typically, they are community projects, where 10, 20 or 30+ mappers get together and each contribute one map to some restrictive challenge. It is then very fun to play and see everyone's unique take on said challenge. You also have to agree that some restriction projects are better than others in concept and execution. Take 10 Lines Massacre for example. In my opinion, it's way too restrictive, and it shows. As a result, it gets repetitive very fast, despite it having a huge roster of different mappers. 100 lines can be a good creative challenge, if once again you get a collection of different mappers who will all have a unique take on it. Now you take one mapper like Joe, and have him make a megawad of 100 lines maps... well, if i get a bad impression right from the get-go, as i did with the first 7-8 maps, there's no way i'll keep playing his set... in fact, i'll be out by map 03. Given that he's an "expert" in map and combat design, maybe he should've realized early on that his project is going nowhere and stop at 3-5 maps instead of 20.
@@joeilya Nah, Joe, you're mistaken. I'm not a part of the DBP team, never have been.
@joeilya no need to apologize to me joe, i can take the heat. I cut my teeth with fast monsters where the chainsaw is useless. Its dead to me.
This is so bad! Ilya acts like some sort of mapping expert when reviewing other's work, but it turns out that he's no more than a mapping amateur. How do you have more than 10 years of mapping experience and still make maps like some noob in 1994?
Hell yeah, "like a noob in 1994"! Thanks for the compliment. By the way, the maps are limited to 100 linedefs each, it's gonna look like a 1994 offering no matter how you slice it.
@@joeilya If it's going to look like a 1994 offering no matter what, then why even bother to make not one, not two, but 20 of these awful gimmicky maps? I doubt someone had a gun to your head and told you to map only with 100 line and in triangles, right? The concept is awful! And to post this turd, just after acting like a big deal and bashing RastaManGames' map from Lunar Strain... you have to be quite delusional to do that. And by the way, limiting yourself to 100 lines is not an excuse of how terrible your combat design is.
Nice map. I like all the jumpery stuff here. Not a big fan of non-linearity though. Also this was the first time I heard Okuplok midi not in Okuplok itself lol.
That fight with 5 arch-viles and pinkies took me a few tries to beat. It's pretty easy to run out of ammo in that fight.
Nice map, but I personally felt like it has less personality than the previous maps so to speak. I remember it as "just a good competent map" lol.
I really appreciate your commentary, thank you!
thanks for watching
Hate how there's never enough health to recover from high damage rolls unless you're not saving them for later.
Yeah, its definitely a bit frustrating but it is also what makes this map memorable.
Meh map imo. All the action takes place in one arena and there's a few awkward fights.
Also lots of run-on brick texture, forgot to mention it in my comment and then heard you mention this in the vidya.
@@theoldschooldude5059 Its a neat idea for a map, just wish the execution was a bit better (especially the upper deck area). Also have to keep in mind that the mapper made 3 maps in one month, so it makes sense that they are a little sparser in the detailing department. I tried to do that once and completely failed and other mappers had to help me finish the maps, so I have big respect for getting it done.
Cool map, but these lost souls kinda suck.
yeah, its a fun gimmick the first time, but afterwards they really slow the map down.
All ghosts already. Nice!
was not expecting that at all. must have been the SSG blast I fired off.
40oz always had a good grip on how to make great lighting in his maps.
yep. paint lighting onto walls instead of floors, use large gradient steps instead of small ones, use tiny triangle sectors to put shadows into corners.
@@UVFastUVFurious he's also really good at detailing. His DBP59 maps are freaking gorgeous.
Based map. That trap with two pain excrementals is pretty tricky. If you don't kill them in time, you'll risk spending most of your remaining ammo on lost souls :/ Also it's Kitty Cat, not City Kat!!1!1!!! (jk) Valiant is pretty fun for the first time, but really boring on replays and Sunlust is super unfun to play saveless.
heh, i just read the name like it is spelled. glad you posted that review, i haven't been motivated to record videos for a while.
@@UVFastUVFurious yeah, I was expecting people will be pronouncing it like that 😭😭😭 Thanks for the videos lol, it's always good to see more DBP playthroughs, especially with commentary!
I wonder why Ribbicks didn't go with OTEX for this.
Well well well another doomtuber :D
