BMAA Safety Harness Guide
We think few would disagree that a wearing a seatbelt in a car can significantly reduce the chance of serious injury in the event of a crash. So, it is important to remember that the same is true for an aircraft.

Just test flew a new DJ-II with Sting Ray here in Florida. Similar to Cheval 12 wing I have used but better energy retention and glide and a bit heavier handling with winglets on in roll.
but we are not incorporating the moment offered by tail and wings or moment by any aerodynamic forces, is it correct?
I'm never quite clear of the purpose of the VNE dive or what one would expect to happen if it failed?
Hush up for 5 minutes mate. I just want to enjoy the aircraft sound, plus enjoy the scenery. Yep as a 70 something teenager, one day, I might buy one, but right now I just want to enjoy the silence, and view the scenery. Just 5 minutes, of hush, is all I ask. Thank you.
What's the maximum speed this craft can fly at?
The VNE (never exceed speed) is 117mph. See the BMAA website for full details: www.bmaa.org/files/TADS_BM94_exodus_deltajet500_stingray.pdf
@@BritishMicrolighting and what's the payload it can carry? How many kgs? And, with a full fuel tank, what distance can it cover?
@@pkb122 The UK dealer answers your questions at www.exodusairsports.co.uk/index.php?page=specifications-and-performance-data
I am looking forward to getting started later on this year. I've been wanting to fly microlights since the early 80s. Usual story, family got in the way. I blame Giles Fowler for getting me hooked again. A fellow ex RAF engineer
I hope no responsibility for your future fun and grins 👍🏻😜😁.
Thank you, great revision🛩️
What's the cost difference between flex and three Axel?
To learn to fly, no difference. To maintain an aeroplane, it depends on which one! To buy - in the UK you can buy either a flexwing or a 3-axis for less than £5000 - or a share in one for less than that. A typical second-hand 'average' flexwing is usually a bit cheaper than a 3-axis but there is a very wide choice. The most expensive brand new flexwings are around £55,000 but the most expensive new 3-axis can be £230,000.
@@BritishMicrolighting wow, what an answer thanks for that. I'm scared of flying so I need to conquer it 😂😂😂 there's a airport nearby so I should take the 20 minute taster 😂😂 cheers
Thanks for helping! Currently studying for the check ride and written right now.
Very interesting. I may or may not be more confused now lol. Good Information though.
Although I now fly 3 axis, it's only because my shoulders can no longer take the hammering they got when I flew flexwings. On top of which, I have very little grip strength for holding the base tube of the A frame, so I had to migrate to the 'dark side'! However, given the choice, I'd still much rather fly a flex if my body allowed it. You feel that you're a part of the air you're flying through, and you feel every single gust and eddy of the air, however small it may be. But whichever type of microlight you choose to fly, be proud that you're the best pilots of light aircraft in the UK.
I hope this isn't considered irrelevant but does anyone know if there is a definitive resource that will tell me if I (type 1, insulin dependent diabetic) would be eligible for a PPL that would allow me to fly a flexing? I've had a couple of flights and have been bitten by the bug. TIA.
It is possible and there are many pilots flying with diabetes. There is information on the CAA site but check that you are looking at 'Pilot Medical Declaration' or PMD and not LAPL or Class 2 or Class 1 medicals, all of which are more stringent. www.caa.co.uk/general-aviation/pilot-licences/applications/medical/medical-requirements-for-private-pilots/. A PMD is based on the DVLA Group A driving licence requirements. Email the BMAA office and we can connect you to medical advisers for your specific situation: general@bmaa.org
BMAA. An organisation that you HAVE to join and pay fees just to own and fly a microlight in the UK. In France where there is much less regulation there is a similar organisation called FFPLUM which you can be a member of if you wish.
That is not correct. You can own and fly a microlight without being a BMAA member and lots of people do. If you want to access our technical services, you have to help contribute to salaries and overheads, so there are fees. If you need a permit, you could go directly to CAA but I expect the fees would be 5x ours. You would not then benefit from the very wide range of services, support, representation, lobbying and advice that the BMAA offers. The BMAA is NOT the regulator - that is the CAA - and we constantly question/oppose any regulation that negatively impacts on microlighters. Microlighting in the UK would be a VERY different and much more expensive place to be without the BMAA.
Do I need a license to fly a Phantom X1. The Phantom X1 is a tractor-configuration (i.e., front engine), high-wing, ultralight aircraft. ... Aerolite 103. Image from FlugKerl2. ... Hummel Ultracruiser. ... Mosquito XEL. What can I fly without a license?
In the UK, you can fly something that has an empty weight of 70kg or less (including fuel) without a pilot licence. This means very lightweight aircraft and none of the ones you mention are that light. Take a look at our web page for more info: www.bmaa.org/learning-to-fly-in-sub-70-kg-aircraft
Hi there. Do you have any examples of what I could possibly fly without a license. With kind regards@@BritishMicrolighting
@@deadalus888 Search for Sub 70 FLPHG (foot launched powered hang glider) or Sub 70 SPHG (self propelled hang glider). The Sub-70 range includes hang gliders, paragliders, paramotors and lightweight single seat flexwings. They all weigh less than 70kg including fuel when ready to take off (plus pilot!). We very strongly recommend you take training and there are many training establishments available.
Not sure that I agree with the one type of microlight is better than another but there is a great appeal with both. My wife loves going up in / on flex wings, I like flying 3 axis but have flown hang gliders and powered hand gliders and agree that you definently feel in contact with the air. I am so happy the flex wings are coming back and I think that has a lot to do with Ben and Flylight at least in the UK.
Great Job promoting what we get to experience and enjoy, What a gift!!!
Real pilots fly flex. 👍👍👍
And ride motorbikes
Still grinning today. #whywefly
Shocked, nit shocked to see you in this video. You are a great ambassador of the sport
@@SimonAmazingClarke thank you Simon, I hope one day we can meet up.
May I ask about how can we choose the datum line and if the datum line is different between aircraft
The datum will be described in the aeroplane's paperwork and will quite likely be different for each type.
While your calculations are correct you go about it in a long windedway. Basically, if you remive the hash line from the box between total weight, and total moment, then divide the momemt by the weight you get your answer. A demonstration on excel would be a lot simpler.
i have solo experience with PA28 (don’t have a ppl yet), may I have the chance to fly a ultralight aircraft in your association?
To fly, you need a pilot licence. You can get a trial flight at most flying schools. Look on our website for more details: www.bmaa.org/try-microlighting/your-first-flight
Excellent informative video for a lapsed pilot trying to revalidate my licence.
A good concise presentation, very glad to say my check flight pretty much matched this great walk through.
I love you
Looks so amazing ❤

If i get my microlight license (NPPL M), will i be able to take my wife for a flight? Assuming I'll be hiring out from my flying club.
Hello! Sorry for the delay in replying. Essentially, YES! An NPPL (m) allows for 2-seat flying unless a specific medical problem restricts you to single seat. Contact us if you want more information - our website is www.bmaa.org.
super 🎉

Nice to hear that someone who is WIS&D gets help and support, well deserved 👍👍😊😊
Superb, similar to girls school project culminating in G-GRLS.
No One ever checks the Wing Jesus Bolt, if it Breaks, you Might See Jesus rather quickly....
A M10 class 8.8 or AN6 bolt in double shear would take well in excess of 15000 pounds to break apart. Just change it every 400 or so hours in case there is any fatigue developing on the threads in case its installed improperly or the wear on the bolt because it is like a bearing surface on a trike. The Aluminum block around it will break before the bolt
Great, another very hard subject down! Thanks for the help! :)
Anyone watching this feeling mildly inspired - Just start! I always through aviation was too expensive for me (thought the planes would be 200k, licence too expensive etc). They are not, it's really good value. You could, not that you need to, buy a reasonable Microlight for the price of a new Skoda Octavia. Can rent or buy a share. I have a few videos on my channel. Always seek instruction, But don't exclude yourself from aviation. The BMAA are really efficient too!! Great magazine and knowledgeable staff.
Very good and well done! Professional producers just make so much difference (especially compared to my rubbish efforts :-) ) .
Was going to like the comment Andy, but thought making videos is hard so don't do yourself down. Keep up the good work. I got motivated to start via UA-cam (the Micropilot etc). Maybe in my honeymoon period but cannot get enough flying videos as I've said I always (mistakenly) thought it was outside my reach. If you even just inspire 1 or 2 more pilots - super!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It's quite good, eh? :)
@@BritishMicrolighting I might be biased but I think it’s superb!
@@BenAtkinsonVideos We're definitely biased and we agree with you!
Spamming these comments a bit I suppose (I think it's the I thought I could never afford to fly but realised I can aspect) But the reason I started was because UA-cam, particularly 'The Micropilot' (he is the OG to me) but shortly afterwards you Ben! Will check the podcast out - but at the same time can you get flying again!
I'd like to see more - extended versions - of those clips and places, amazing aircraft and amazing views!😊👍
Great video, the joy of being able to fly
Great video, gets right to the point
Yeah, who on earth thumbed down!
Fantastic, thank you for featuring us, makes me want to go and get the plane out of the hanger and go flying. I’m sure this video is really going to help those that are thinking of taking up Microlighting, it’s something I’ll never regret.
Ditto. Just do it! Microlighting is super accessible! I always thought flying was too expensive so self-selected out. No so, I could have started when I was on apprentice money.
Great video for an amazing sport.
Keep 'em coming folks, UA-cam is the platform of choice for showing off just how incredible the privilege of cheap accessible flying can be.
Great vid :-) we are lucky to have such wonderful flying machines … Let’s also not forget the cheaper end of flying :-) We can now buy a 2 seat microlight for as little as £2k . :-)
