My journey into the world of fly tying and fly fishing began at the tender age of 14, marking the start of a lifelong passion that spans over 42 years.
I have been a fly designer with Fulling Mill/Orvis since 1996, and with the Montana Fly Company. Some of my designs were recognized when I was named Orvis Fly Tyer of the Year in 2005. I was also named a finalist for the Orvis Endorsed Guide of the Year in 2011, 2012, and 2013, which highlighted my reputation as a guide.
My expertise and achievements have earned me features in a wide array of prestigious publications. These include Orvis News, Field and Stream, The Wall Street Journal, Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine, The Angler Magazine, Irish Angler's Digest, Fly Fish America, Wildlife in North Carolina, Flugfiske i Norden, Fly Tyer Magazine, and Southern Culture on a Fly.
I have also been a featured tyer and presenter at several events, such as the British Fly Fair International in the UK; Sportfiskemässan and Woodstort in Sweden.

Learn how to tie the Duracell fly pattern and catch more fish with this simple and effective technique. Perfect for fly fishing enthusiasts looking to up their game!
#flytying #flytyingnation #duracell
The Duracell is a popular fly pattern designed by Scottish fly designer and angler, Craig McDonald, for targeting trout and grayling.
Commonly features darker colors like browns, blacks, or olives, but can be tied in various shades to match local hatches. They are usually tied in a range of sizes, often from small (sizes 14-18) to larger (sizes 10-12), depending on the target species and conditions.
They are typically fished using a dead-drift technique, resembling an emerging insect or struggling baitfish, and can be effective in both stillwater and moving water.
This fly pattern is known for its effectiveness in various freshwater environments. Adjustments can be made based on local conditions and fish behavior.

Love the tie! How are you fishing it to get it low in the water column?
@mikeseguin4062 Thank you. It's actually pretty heavy, but I use a heavy point fly and that above. If I need extra weight, I'll add tungsten putty to the rig.
I assume that copic won't wash out in the water?
Depends. That's part of the reason I coat it with uv resin.
@crimsondragon1794 The Chartpak Markers are more permanent. They are xylene based instead of alcohol based, like Copic.
@@flytyingzonedavehise good too know rhanks ^.÷.^, I'm looking to learn how too fly fish and make my own flies
Nice
I'm learning that I will literally watch absolutely anything
That there is a $10 fly, minimum. Artistry at work.
@@patsheridan thank you, sir
I'd try it but I'm all out of nymph skin.
I sell latex 😂😂
Very nice if just tied as a realistic to look at. But a lot of time and effort for something to hang in a tree on the first back cast.
Very true! I just don't cast them in the trees.
Nice looking bug my friend 👏🏻👏🏻 Cheers
@jerrycampbell3221 thank you. Hope you are well.
Great creations brother, you can make them as many as you can so soon they will be sold to the fishermen. I love it but I'm not a fishing guy like others and keep going brother.
@@nengvang9163 thank you
Other than just the joy of crafting something beautiful, is there an advantage to artificial bait over actual bugs? I’ve never fished before and know nothing about it!
Maybe sometimes... but fooling the fish with something you created is actually better than creating it (in my opinion).
Yup, it’s a Duracell, there’s a copper top!
@@flytyingzonedavehise kidding aside, it’s a nice fish catching fly 🪰
Красивая мушка и хорошая работа ! У меня есть такой материал , но я его ещё не использовал .Надо связать и попробывать , у нас сейчас самое время на такой цвет ленков и харюзей ловить .
Thank you. Let's go catch.

Next time tie in the tail pieces first😅
You tie the way you want. I tie the way I want.
Nice looking stonefly pattern, but looks time consuming to tie . In any case nice tie thanks for sharing.
Thank you. It is time consuming, but after 40 plus years of tying I need a challenge. I enjoy entomology and tying, so at this stage, I merge the two. I tie easy ones, too. I created Squirmy Wormy some 17 years ago.
@@flytyingzonedavehise I’m with you on that , sometimes I just sit and look at the bugs and imagine how do I tie this and actually make it look the same . I’ve never use emu does it hold up well ?
@@MichaelKuczynski-u7o I've used emu for years, for different applications. The nail barbs can be brittle. It depends on how the feathers were prepared and preserved. I also use emu for hackle on streamers.
Gorgeous
Thank you!

How about a tutorial on floss with flex resin legs
Hmmm!
Are you referring to legs constructed of floss or thread? If so, there is a tutorial on that.
Floss...a man has a video on floss legs he's from another country... I just wanted to see you use them because you can manipulate the size of the legs.. maybe 2 strand floss... they look great I just wanted to see you do it maybe other people out there would like to see it
Mouamar Tanash is his name
@@michaelcalantoni-di9fc I've seen it.
Take this as a compliment.....some your ties literally give me the creepy crawlers......theyvare so realistic, I swear they move when tou get that final wrap done. Unbelievable how real your patterns look. It amazes how you make all your patterns look real. I realize that is the point but you are above the rest. Great job and I love your channel. In tbe short time I have been subscribed, I have learned a great deal. Been binge watching your past videos. I have been tying for 25 years and I could tie for another an never get close to your skills. How long have you been doing this? Please tell me 40 years!
Thank you for the kind words. I love entomology and I love tying. Therefore, I try to merge the 2. I've been tying since 1983.
@@flytyingzonedavehise and to say that you do is an understatement! I tie some good bugs too, but wow!

That's super cool! It's amazing how those are not just flies for fishing, they're also little works of art. My husband is getting into flyfishing, and I've contemplated starting to make some flies for him. I think it would be fun.
@amandakorbe3773 It is very relaxing. I've been tying for over 40 years, and I am still enthralled. I can help with the process of him getting started. It just so happens that I own a fly shop 🤣😅
It's absolutely adorable!!! ❤
