Today, we caught the return of NS 7712 coming back from the west as a DPU this time! It was lead by an AC4400 which had a stack fire and wasn't loading but was too far away to see on the video. On May 16, 2023 a CP ballast regulator burst into flames just as I was driving by, so I got out and got a quick video for you guys since no one else has ever made a video of a ballast regulator on fire! This was in the Saskatoon CP railyard in the Sutherland area!

    I watched the same kind of sparks come out of a burning S.U.V. when they hit it with water last week. Golf ball sized . I kept my distance. I wondered if it was a Hybrid and the glowing sparks were from the Battery power plant

      Probably had some magnesium in it. It doesn't like water.

      @@stevebean1822 Yes, when magnesium is hot and burning, putting water on it causes a reaction where it releases oxygen and actually burns more intensely, producing the bright white sparks.

      My guess is that the department wasnt sure of the different chemicals they had to deal with. Fighting fires with a one way approach can lead to disasters.

      @@rxrcond4life Look again, on a larger screen. Those hoppers are on a completely different yard track, probably about 20 feet beyond the regulator.

      @@whiteknightcat You are correct. Blowing up the screen shows you to be correct. I have seenbin my career two incidences where cars were humped into a track and damaged track gang equipment. Odd that a regulator would catch fire on it's own. Fuel leak maybe?

      I think since it was a total hull loss, they were more interested in keeping the sleepers / ties from burning, and what little they did was in the name of training. No sense in getting too gung ho when you are trying to teach fire science.

      A ballast regulator is like any other motor vehicle - it uses fuel like gasoline or diesel, it's got oil and lubricants, an electrical system (which you could see sparking all over the place), and combustible plastics.
