    Thanks. I am so ashamed of myself, I was so full of myself as an engineer, I use AutoCAD since 1999 or so, I mastered Visio and LbreOffice Draw, know a bit of Compass and my diploma was drawn in NanoCAD (one of the AutoCAD clones), also I make plastic parts for my bicycle like plugs, holders, different bodys of revolution in FreeCAD and my friend 3D-prints them for me. But no matter how many times I try to use FreeCAD instead of my default CAD program it is a fiasco: sketches, while they are good for 3D-printing become hell if I try to draw something as complex as a bookshelf. Bookshelves do not need constraints or continuity in every detail. I also tried arch workbench, while it is good for warehouses and steel beams of all sorts, it sucks in intermediate sized objects, where millimeters count. Without this instruction it is impossible to guess that draft does not need a specialized datum plane, does not need to be a part of a body or "part". Finding where the grid snapping is and why an obvious property "length" is nowhere to be found on a line, whilst changing any of three vector properties of a "line" breaks the object entirely is unrealistic without proper guidance.

    I'm learning freecad and I drew 2 rectangles in draft mode, one smaller than the other. I want the small one, which I drew after the big one, to sit inside but it seems to be hidden under the big one. In other drawing programs you can change the order or "bring to front". There must be a similar function here but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

      Assuming you are working on the X,Y plane, you want to change the Properties of one of the rectangles to change it's Position on the X, Y, Z plane... as described below... 1 - On the Draft Workbench set the view to Top View and the Working Plane to X,Y as demonstrated in the tutorial. 2 - Use the Rectangle Tool to create Rectangle 1 3 - Use the Rectangle Tool to create Rectangle 2, and partially overlap Rectangle 1 4 - Click on Either Rectangle to select it. 5 - Make sure you have the Rectangle selected on the Model tab in the Combo View. 6 - Under Properties click on the down arrow besides Placement 7 - Then click the down arrow by Position 7 - Now experiment by changing the value of Z This should move the selected Rectangle up or down the Z axis as you wish. Remember, FreeCAD is a 3D app so keep in mind the Placement on the X, Y, Z plane. Hope this helps.

    • @sblack48
      @sblack48 2 місяці тому

      @ thank you. I guess if 2 objects have the same Z then the overlap is determined only by the order in which they are drawn? I had hoped that I could reorder them in the model tab but that seems to be impossible.

    Great tutorial video about part of the Draft workbench, Thank you very much. It would be nice to keep this tutorial applying the rest of the tools the same manner you've done this one, that would become a visual and practical Wiki of the workbench. For beginners it's worthy to emphasise that in the follow up of this Draft wb, came up Arch wb and later BIM wb. So, the Draft wb is included into the subsequents workbenches. I personally prefer to use the Sketcher wb which 2D geometric elements can be transformed to Draft 2D geometric elements and vice versa. The learning curve of FreeCAD it's a real time consuming endeavour but I think who learns how to use it has a great advantage if is dealing with another CAD software, besides it's free. I thank to all developers of this incredible piece of tool at our disposal specially to Mr. Yorik van Havre the main developer of Draft, Arch and BIM workbenches. I also thank you for your time and skills to transmit your knowledge to the community. By the way the CTRL + ALT to get a point over an element was new for me (or I already forgot...). Greetings from Portugal!

    Useful workbench, when it works. Seems buggy though. I am using 0.21.2 and when creating a (square) U-shape, and try to bend one arm of the U everything is fine. Turning that bend to "Material inside", the bend jumps to the other arm of the U and messes everything up. Only works if the U has two arms of different length, which is not very useful for applications.

    Once again, an excellent video that teaches me exactly what I need to know. One suggestion however, on future videos would you please leave any text notes you write on the screen up longer? I've done many adult training videos, and a good time is 3 times the amount of time it takes you to read the text out loud. This will only add a few additional seconds to your video, but make it much easier for students to follow without having to stop the video, back it up to read what they missed, then restart the video.

    Absolutely one of the best tutorials I've seen for any cad software. Every step covered with no presumption that the user was already familiar with the software. I learned in 12 minutes exactly what I needed to know after spending several hours playing with the software and watching several other tutorials on Freecad, including one on how to "create a sheet metal part." That other sheet metal tutorial assumed the user already knew how to use Freecad and was hard to follow because the instructor didn't describe the icons and skpped a few steps.

    Clear to the point and easy to follow and understand. I've been using FreeCAD for over 12 Mths (Total Novice with CAD). I've become reasonably proficient in Sketcher Part, PartDesign and Curves but Draft has escaped Me. Many FreeCAD Wikki Tuts are to advanced or vague to understand. This has taught Me stuff about Draft I've been trying to figure out for ages.

    Is it possible to explain how to use a dimension of an sketch object to determine the value of another dimension - even a dimension from a different sketch of a separate body or part? I don't mean from a spreadsheet, but from the objects sketch itself. For example I have a sketch with a dimension that I label 'length' in its reference box when I type in its value. In a separate part I want a dimension in that part to be twice as log as the length of that 1st part. Without using a spreadsheet - can I set the dimension in the 2nd part to be " 2 x Part1.Length "?

      @@321StepBySteptTutorials Thank You. I did finally figure it out (i had trouble because I'm brand new to FreeCad) but u can directly reference any 'constraint' no matter where it is if u type a name in the 'reference' box in the window u enter the value in. Such as 'SketchName.Constraint.Length' where 'Length' is the name u gave the constraint (and its case sensitive). On the other hand it took me forever to figure out how to reference a Pad Dimension. I will check out the video since I am not up of shapebinder .. Again Thanks

      Even if you are using 'mm' as your predefined units you can enter the values he's entering followed by 'in' or the ' " 'character and erase the 'mm' within the value box. After entering the value, FreeCAD will calculate the conversion and change it automatically to 'mm' again. Remember the ISO threads are constructed differently than SAE norm. ISO thread uses the pitch value to advance the screw by a turn and SAE is the counting of turns per inch. Newer FreeCAD versions include the Fasteners workbench and became useless this method of construction of a bolt or screw. But if you need to construct a customary bolt, for example, then you need to follow this method. In this video the Hex head was padded incorrectly. No need of a second body. The last sketch should be mapped to the end of the shaft...
