First snow of the year! Ontario Northland 2103 leads 211 at Dobie and Fork Lake Ontario
The first real snowfall of the year has covered the Northern part of Ontario and this means ONR has reached its most beautiful time of year. we start off the video with chatter between a foreman and a snow fighter on the Ramore subdivision, in this clip you hear 211 crossing over the hot box detector at mile 13. shortly after hearing the hot box detector we see 2103 cresting over the hill at Dobie and catch 2103 2101 and 2121 going over the crossing. As a last little topper for this video i race to Fork Lake to catch them once more and with little time to setup i used the box of the pickup to record the clip.

Ontario Northland’s 211 has to make it up some some impressive gradients that vary with such heavy loads. So it’s often you will see 211 hauling at notch 8 across the system like you see at mile 23 Kirkland Lake sub. Date: April 3, 2023

Starting from Cochrane on June 7th it headed North to Moosonee and tied down for the night. the next day it made the 600km trip south to Rouyn Noranda (missed that train) but the day after July 9th i had heard it pulled a allnighter in Rouyn yard so i still had a chance. first spot we catch it at Nort...

It’s not anywhere near a good video considering it’s backlit but it’s nice to see variety in videos once in a while. You can see parked pickups hinting that fall is here and that hunting season is in full swing. ONR 2101 2121 and 2122 pulls 211 through mile 22.43 Kirkland lake subdivision on October 3th 2024

An early morning chase through the fog through Keslo and barbers bay After waiting for 207 to arrive into Porquis junction with my good friend Ayden we leave for Barber Bay for the S curve. That morning it was particularly foggy lasting until 11 in some places, but nevertheless this fog made for an interesting shot.

This was shot sometime in December or January of 22/23. This is a common site to see 211 just before night time in winter time. It can make it quite challenging to catch 211 sometimes and makes 512 more of a summer train considering it’s ordered out of Rouyn at about 18:00. But I can tell you this makes winter my favourite time of the year because of the unique weather and lighting you get to s...

Nice video 😊
Thanks!
Great video
Thank you!
Great catches awesome chase and nice video
Cool short power trains very unique 👌
Nice video
I wondered if they maintained service during the Horne Smelter maintenance shutdown. They do apparently but this make really short trains…
It's a similar situation for Canadian National trains they get shorter.
great video, some nice spots
Cabooses on that train? Love short trains.
Nice catch
Thanks!
Are alot of these cars interchanging with CN Rail at Hearst ? And who services the mill west of Hearst on the old CN line ?
Is ONR 'S Star trucking still going in kirkland lake ?
How many high nose GP 9 units are still working on the ONR ?
Nice. Watching in Swift Current sk
Whats in the gondolars with the covers on them ?
they are gondolas for the Horne smelter, they carry copper extract.
Why 2 cabooses ?
Are any of those hoppers the ones from algoma central ?
I’m not sure, they got them so long ago I don’t even know. I’m pretty sure they were regular 2 bay hopper’s purchased and converted into ballast cars.
Great capture
Thank you!
Great video. I just got a Marklin Ontario Northland F7 loco that has "Polar Bear Express" written on it. This got me curious and I ended up getting a bunch of ONR rolling stock to build this train, just missing another flat car and the heater car, and VIA passenger cars will have to do...
@@tomsmaerklintrainlayout6742 Thanks! Those 2000’s are F7Cats and I’ve always wanted to have one as I love the old scheme they had. But keep looking, eventually you’ll be able to build a full PBX.
@ I tried to run the Ontario Northland train pulled by the F7 on the Märklin tracks, but some of the cars constantly derailed. So I ended up using some CN & Alaska Märklin freight cars instead: ua-cam.com/video/BFC2xEloOPg/v-deo.htmlsi=p9dclCKnG6FzWQ_f

Fantastic job done
It must be alot of work to get this footage. U have to know the average train times. Get out there and get the shot. Each shot must take hours of preptime. Thank you for this.

Cool! Beautiful! Powerful! 🇨🇦

@ontario.northland.railfan It is a beautiful video. We forget that sometimes the simplest things in life are the greatest. Cheers!
Is the grinding cause of the flange rubbing the inside of the lower rail and I guess the outside of the higher rail in a circular motion around a curve?
Yeah I believe it’s something like that, the North end of the wye is very tight and used only a few times a year.
What an interesting job this must be.
Boa noite amigo! Inscrita no Canal! Parabéns pelo belo registro!! Like 🎉😊
I noticed EMD locomotive #`1800 on the front end, and recall seeing this loco back in the late 1980s. If they're well maintained, they run almost forever!

@@goodrails thank you! the gondolas carry copper extract and you have to either walk on the tracks or use an old forestry road.(it’s mile 24 Ramore subdivision)
@@ontario.northland.railfan Thanks! I really like know the loads. I never walk on tracks, (well, anymore :) )
UA-cam offered this up to me. I liked it! I enjoy seeing what trains are transporting, (or not for that matter), in different parts of the continent I subscribed. So, I subscribed.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
That is some nice ballasting on the opening shot!
@@coxsj yep, one of the most important parts of the railroad is maintaining it and I’m glad ONR is doing more of it than before.
@@ontario.northland.railfan Cool roll-bys too!!
Nice to see these videos, but trains are so short. What line isvthis?
@@KickininMyRv90 thank you. they aren’t usually this short but because of the CN strike freight was pretty light for a while. This is the Ramore subdivision, it’s usually one of the busiest subdivision of the ONR with at least 4 trains a day on it.

Awesome video. As an ONR fan for many years, I much prefer the original zigzag livery. The later one looks like it was designed by a committee
Thank you! I will agree Cheveron was probably the best scheme invented by ONR but my personal favourite will always be the ON Rail scheme.
I like the 2nd unit paint scheme
Is that a former Canadian Pacific Budd coach they converted into a geometry car?
No it was bough from BNSF or something like that back in 2022. So I’m not sure what it originally was
Ah yes. Ontario Northland. The railroad where geometry cars are converted from Budd coaches instead of newly purchased railcars, where these single car trains hauled by geeps will soon be running alongside 3 car Siemens Charger trainsets and widecab SD70s. Truly, this is the greatest railroad in all of Canada.
Just like the EMD passenger locomotives the ONR refurbished, It was likely done at their shop in North Bay. Good work, well done.
Nice catch
Thank you!
Well that geometry test car should be generating tons and tons of data for them. Can see it waggling all over the place. Of course, all that data doesn't amount to much if you don't have the funds to get out there and straighten things up. Then again, it's Ontario Northland, not like anything is going to be screaming along at any speed.
I understand the rails look rough but unfortunately it’s not easy to maintain 800 miles of secluded rails in swamp, mountains and plains when you’re not a class one. Heck even CN in northeast Québec has similar track conditions, from bad track conditions to running on old 90lbs rail. And if you compare track condition from 2010 to 2020 it’s massively improved especially considering in 2014 ONR was at its lowest.
