Countryside Walking
United Kingdom
Приєднався 3 жов 2016
Countryside Walking is inspired by scenic landscapes, natural wildlife and love of filming. Walking routes cover areas in the North West, Lancashire/West Yorkshire and beyond. Most routes are within easy reach of Rochdale Greater Manchester Lancs. Whilst I do both the filming and music production side, Michael supports my walks with navigations and extensive knowledge of areas. (Map info is for guidance only, so please check out first.)
Most films provide information on history, archaeology, or geological features, even myths and legends. My filming is very much fly on the wall, or in the moment. Also my love of composing and recording music, I use as soundtracks for my videos. I therefore have another channel focusing entirely on original music via - youtube.com/@Instrumentalmusic68 or from banner youtube icon.
Hope you enjoy watching.

Strinesdale Reservoirs & Country Park
This was an easy short afternoon walk around the Strinesdale Reservoirs. Hidden away and probably not known except to locals, Strinesdale Reservoirs are not far from Roebuck Inn on Roebuck Lane, Grains Bar Oldham. It's more or less a pleasant quiet nature reserve now.
Although a nostalgic return from Michael's earlier years, the nature reserve itself was so hidden by abundant trees, it was easy to miss the track down to the reservoirs.
Once on the scenic trail it passed through woodlands alongside upper and lower Strinesdale Reservoirs. Well worth a viewing stop at the Lower Reservoir with nearby picnic table to relax beside.
(Situated on the A62 between Oldham and Delph Greater Manchester)

Crimsworth Dean, Lumb Bridge Falls, Hardcastle Crags
Переглядів 34821 день тому
One of the many trails leading from Hardcastle Crags is Crimsworh Dean. This was a pleasant route although hardly anyone around at the time. After a fairly long ascent up Crimsworth Dean Valley, we took a detour down to see Lumb Bridge with it's spectacular waterfalls. Unfortunately due to the angle of the bridge, I didn't manage to film it. Fortunately Michael took the risky venture of climbin...
Stonehenge & The Avenue, Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire
Переглядів 152Місяць тому
I wanted to return to Stonehenge during our Salisbury holiday, because of so many past memories there over the years. Stonehenge itself is not only iconic but has fascinating astronomic links. I also wanted to find out if there were any alternative walking routes to using the tourist entrance. We weren't even sure if there was a route, so a relief not to be disappointed in the end. Starting fro...
Salisbury Cathedral & Queen Elizabeth Gardens Water Meadows, Wiltshire
Переглядів 126Місяць тому
Part of the reasons for travelling so far away, was to re-kindlle childhood memories. Having lived in Somerset (Bristol) I was familiar with locations around Salisbury, including Dorset, and Stonehenge. Salisbury Cathedral itself however had its own history. Apparently the original cathedral building began at Old Sarum in my previous film. Although Old Sarum (in my previous film) is now a ruin,...
Old Sarum Castle ruins, Salisbury, Wiltshire
Переглядів 372Місяць тому
'Old Sarum' is an ancient castle ruin high on a hill not far from Stonehenge. The Cathedral ruins also have prehistoric ties to Salisbury Cathedral. (Part of our holiday trip to the area). Michael's interest in visiting the site, came from his historical studies. In fact, we only noticed Old Sarum on our route to Stonehenge, but didn't expect to see so much once there. There are entrance charge...
Hartshead Pike, Medlock Trail, Tameside Oldham
Переглядів 5172 місяці тому
This was a short circular walk with a lot crammed in. Taking a track out of Park Bridge Tameside ou route followed the Medlock River and Valley. With an unexpected abrupt end to the footpath, with only way out was over a stile into a field with no directions to guide us. After that, the lack of signposted trails and missing boundary fields hindered much of our walk. This meant getting lost quit...
Kirklees Valley Circuit & River Irwell/Sculpture Trail (Burrs Country Park)
Переглядів 4222 місяці тому
We began our walk from Burrs Country Park, just outside Bury. Following a varied route through fields, hamlets and woodlands towards Tottington, Summerseat circling back down the River Irwell and Sculpture Trail. Although a short walk, we seemed to pack in a lot. There were canals, rivers and landmark features such as the Wishing Stone and sighting of the East Lancs train. The main issues were ...
Pendle Heritage & Barrowford Trail
Переглядів 2963 місяці тому
We managed this walk on one of the few hot days this summer. It was an easy leisure walk from Pendle Heritage Centre. Starting with a look around the gardens, woodlands, museum and farm yard before getting underway. From Barrowford Park along Pendle Waters we headed towards the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. A circular walk taking us back to Pendle Tea Rooms, a perfect end to a leisure enjoyable day ...
The Plunge, Edenfield, Dearden Brook, Rossendale
Переглядів 2563 місяці тому
The Plunge is near Edenfield village on the Rossendale Borders. It's off the A680 from Rochdale and the A56 from Rawtenstall Bury not far from Manchester. Road parking is not easy to find because The Plunge Waterfall is a hideaway gem. I found out there's plenty of myths and legends about the mills and workers, and how the water was used to power the Mill, (now ruins.) We must have passed this ...
Blackstone Edge Reservoir Circuit, Littleborough, Lancashire
Переглядів 4174 місяці тому
Our Blackstone Edge Reservoir Circuit was easy and level tracks to follow just under 9miles. We passed four reservoirs in all, Blackstone Edge, Light Hazzles Edge, Warland and White Holme Reservoirs. Also a sighting of Withens Reservoir. Starting from The White House, there's a lower public car park (deep pot holes to avoid if you can). The track follows part of the Pennine Way before turning o...
Staithes Harbour & Scaling Reservoir, North York Moors National Park
Переглядів 1614 місяці тому
This was a bit of a tourist holiday in two parts on the same day. Firstly, a pleasant stroll to savour the culture of an ancient fishing harbour at Staithes up in North York Moors. The second stop off was at Scaling Reservoir not far from Whitby and Saltburn on Sea in the North York Moors. Free parking and picnic benches beside the reservoir were available, but car parking at Staithes was outsi...
Leeds & Liverpool Canal & Haigh Country Park
Переглядів 1974 місяці тому
A semi linear canal walk picking up the Leeds Liverpool Canal from Haigh Country Park.Whilst canal walks can be similar, what struck me on this one was the abundance of wild life both in flowers and bird life. We walked just a short section of the 127 miles of canal. Lovely weather too. I think this has to be the most leisurely stroll in recent walks accompanied by our walker friend Sue. (Many ...
Holme Valley Reservoirs, Holmfirth, Yorkshire

Holme Valley is a familiar area from our previous walks there. Passing through some lovely places with a mix of terrain and woodland trees. The tracks were easy to follow between the reservoirs with a rather steep climb towards the end. At least the weather changed to a warmer climate than of late. The Stiperstones Ridge, The Bog, Shropshire Way
Переглядів 2125 місяців тому
The Bog Visitors Centre up on The Stiperstones Ridge, had a wealth of information on the history of the area. Also including a lost mining village with a history of 200years of mining. But our focus was mainly navigating over quartzite deposited (around 480 million years ago), to identify the rocky outcrops on the ridge, (The Cranberry Rocks, Manfold Rocks, and the Devil's Chair.) Each outcrop ...
The Long Mynd, Carding Mill Valley, Shropshire
Переглядів 3396 місяців тому
Not far from the start of our walk, there was a steady ascent up the Carding Mill Valley to the Lightspout waterfalls. Underfoot was uneven and precarious in places. Once on top the track levels out and joins The Burway Loop Way. It's an ancient track to the highest part of The Mynd, Pole Bank Cross trigg which is open heather moorland. One of the reasons I was keen to return again to this area...

This is so beautiful, thank you. X
You’re welcome 😊x
What an ‘orsesome shot of the three horses @ 0.49 ❤ Most ‘bull in field’ signs are actually a loada bull 🤣 I’ve never seen one yet where there was a sign. @ 5.18 such beautiful bird sounds in such a beautiful setting …more like summer sounds and views x x x There’s a lot of these burnt tables about ..what’s happening to the generations ..why do so many not know not to put fire hazards on wooden tables 🤔 I blame the masses of toxic chemicals damaging their brains 🤯 You two have such a great connection ❤ it’s wonderful to watch and listen to x x x 🌈✝️🕊️😇😘🥰😍 Thanks for another beautifully produced video by such a lovely couple x x x so calming ❤ Hope you get to explore many more places together in 2025 🎉HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉 in advance x x x Love Julie x x x
The best 'bull' sign I ever saw was in Langdale. It merely read, " Our bull can cross this field in 30 seconds. Can you"
@ 🤣😂🤣
@@michaeldenham9681 Nice one -ha ha
Thanks Julie for your kind comments. Glad you liked the silhouette of 3 horses on our Strinesdale route. I wondered if the background singing of birds would be noticed too. It wasn't too long ago either when filmed about October. We look forward to future walk explorations when weather permits Julie. Always nice to keep in touch with you. All the best for the New Year 2025. Much appreciation. Shanita xx
Very nice ramble.
Yes it was one of those local walks without having to drive there beforehand. Many thanks Mark.
What a lovely walk and a beautiful waterfall too. Thanks for sharing Shanita and I hope you both have a Happy New Year.
Yes its very overgrown now council budgets. The whitehouse used to be great in the summer. I think there was a nightclub called tops or toppers in 90s the sixth formers would go for lunchtime discos but i was a child 😂
So rewarding to notice how popular Oldham Edge is, and to read so many comments after so long. It was such a short walk in a small area. only noticed by accident on the horizon whilst driving into Royton. Thanks for interesting comments too, on the history of Oldham Edge. 🙂
Strinesdale Reservoirs & Country Park is such a beautiful spot! The peaceful surroundings and scenic views make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. 🌳💧 A great escape into the outdoors! We join your channel. Thanks for sharing with us. Best wishes, Chiara & Donato Fuoridalsentiero. Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much for your comments and joining my channel. It's nice to hear from someone who knows the area too. Best wishes to yourselves Chiara and Donator over the festive season.👍🌲🌳
always wondered where this place was,now i know, thanks for sharing.
I never knew either Ken about this hideaway place. Thanks for comments and a have a great Christmas too.🙂
@ thanks, you too.
A place I hadn't heard of before. We have visited Alexandra Park and Tandle Hill Country Park (with great views to Manchester), in that area. Have a great Christmas and New Year.
Alexandra Park and Tandle Hill Country Park are popular areas, but Strinesdale isn't so well known. I found this quite a tranquil hidden gem and the lower reservoir very scenic. I do enjoy exploring somewhere I've not been to before which Michael is good at rooting out. I am putting a map up on my face book page as well as above OS link. Have a lovely Christmas to you both and New Year Steven and Jeanie. 🥳🌲🌲
I must admit I've not heard of these places before, but it was good to see on your map where Strinesdale is. Seemed like a pleasant walk again and nice to see the lower reservoir. Wow those tables certainly looked like they've been well scorched, especially that one with the holes. Enjoyed "Sweet Memories" with its nice gentle rhythm. Great stuff Shanita, all the best 👍
Hello Patrick. Strinesdale is very local to Grains Bar Oldham, Lancs. Suprsing how little known this tranquil hidden gem of a nature reserve is. Michael seems to root out such places having grown up in Saddleworth. So unexpected too. Glad you liked my uptempo 'Sweet Memories'. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year Patrick.🥳🌲🌲
Nice one! Might just need to pop up there myself sometime. Merry Christmas! 💕
Hi Allie. Strinesdale Reservoir is easy to find once you get to the Roebuck Inn. Quite a nice nature reserve with easy tracks to follow. All the best to you and family for Christmas and New Year.☺👍🌲
It's nice that even after decommissioning the Reservoirs they kept the lower one as a wildlife habitat. I'm glad you never saw a bull. I love Michael's knowledge of the area too. Thanks for sharing Shanita. Wishing you and Michael a wonderful Christmas.
Hello Chris. Hope Keeping well. It's interesting how local small areas 🌳can be just as appealing as longer walkers. Yes. Never saw that bull!! 🙄🐂All the very best to you Chris over Christmas and New Year. 🌲
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. 👍5
Thanks Khurshids. I'm glad enjoyed and all best for Christmas.🙂
Beautiful locations
This was only small but as a nature reserve had a lot to offer. Many thanks for watching. All best for Christmas🌲
Thank you both ❤ Beautiful as ever and very interesting too, and fun with you pointing out that Michael seemed to be struggling with his clips on his bag, then he left it to one side 🤣 great editing x x x Much love Julie 🌈✝️🕊️🦋😇😘🥰😍 x x x
I know I do say things hopefully more as humour. Glad you liked the editing too, for this walk. But really enjoy the creative side. All the best to you and many thanks Julie 🙂👍🌳🍁🏞
@ ❤️ yes the creative side is wonderful too x x x like your added emojis 😄 I love that x x x 🧊 🦢… my husband taught me that one, it’s supposed to mean ..Nice one 🤣
Lovely West Yorkshire countryside..we are hoping to get out there soon in the new year...loved watching you both deciding which way to go...me and Karen are exactly the same, we can never decide...lovely video.
Hi Steven. Great to see your comments and our debate over which direction to take. Never know what happens on our walks. You would both enjoy this area if you get the chance to visit this side. Thanks for watching Steven much appreciated.🙂👍
Hardcastle Crags and Crimsworth Dean are both places I've heard of but have yet to visit. It certainly looks lovely around there. I smiled when you and Michael were deciding which path to take 😁 I can remember "Quiet Times" from a previous video. Love the chords you use in this score. Thanks Shanita, all the best 👍
Yes. Michael likes giving his option choices rather than decisions, but it was nice to take a different track from Hardcastle for a change. You are right. Quiet Times has been around before, so you were right to recognise it. As always, really appreciate your comments and watching. All the best Patrick.🙂👍
Were you aware you passed an ancient monument called Abel Cross on the left, around 1 mile ahead of Hollin Hall near the start of the walk. Wonderful walk and filming/music as always and first time I happened upon Lumb Hole falls, it was hard to believe I wasn't in some remote exotic terrain in another country.😊
Hello Nick. I wasn't aware of an ancient monument called Abel Cross. Michael says we could have passed it if we had taken the top lane instead of track down to Gibson Mill. But still interesting to know about. Lumb Bridge made a nice discovery to include on our trail. Thanks for info and glad you enjoyed our walk as much as we did. 🙂👍
Beautifully filmed walk Shanita, lots of really nicely captured scenes with equally enjoyable music "Quiet Times". Good to see a route other than the usual Bridge Clough river walk.
Hi Steve. Thanks so much for watching. It was a great walk with all the usual antics on route. Pleased you enjoyed and like my music which has been around a while.
I've never visited but I have passed by once years ago. It is a shame you can't get up close and personal but I suppose it preserves the site for future generations. I hadn't heard of the timber circle before or the burial mounds and the avenue. Thanks for sharing Shanita.
Hi Chris. Thanks for comments. I remember the days when it was free to wander up close to the stones, so as you say it is a shame those restrictions are in place. The timber circle is new to me too, although I had heard about them and Durrington so I was glad to have visited these ancient sites. All the best Cris.
It was nice to see you both at Stonehenge Shanita. I've never actually been there, apart from driving past it once many eons ago. But wow, all those people there during your walk! 😯It's obviously a popular tourist attraction. All that traffic on the nearby road too. Liked the look of Woodhenge actually, fascinating to see all those pillars. Lovely haunting theme "Ancient Secrets" with the bells, enjoyed that very much. All the best 👍
Hi Patrick. Always lovely to hear from you. Yes - it's a tourist area but pleased we found a walking route to the ancient stones (which are enormous!!). Also like you, a return to some of my roots. Music was a bit sombre and atmospheric but hopefully matched the mood of film. Thanks for your loyal support Patrick.👍😊
Thanks for this, the Neolithic remains in Wiltshire are incredible. It is a area of many leylines and accounts for about 80% of the Worlds's crop circles.
Hi Nick. Thanks for your comments. I know Wiltshire is some distance from the North. I have also heard of leylines. Its an interesting connection between leylines and crop circles, and nice see responses along this topic.
I have been in Oldham all my life, and that's the first time i have ever seen Oldham edge. Been the pub a few times though 😊 but never walked there. You learn something new every day.
Well that's good to know other people have found somewhere new as a result of our walks. Glad to see your comments. Thanks for that.🙂
Lovely area and beautiful cathedral. Really like those two compositions Shanita, "So Far" and "Dawn Chorus", some nice chord progressions and memorable melodies.
What lovely comments about my music composition. Both tracks were produced several years ago 'So Far' 2017 and 'Dawn Chorus' 2019, but nice to re-introduce again when appropriate. Much appreciated Steve. Many thanks. 🎼🎵
Salisbury looks absolutely beautiful. I've never been but would like to. I have visited Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain though. 🙂
That's Interesting Chris, you visiting Salisbury as well as Stonehenge. We found a walking route to Stonehenge which avoided the tourists entrance. 🙂
From Salisbury, my dog all the time there - we just wondered if anyone had videoed the place on UA-cam and found this!
That's great to read. So rewarding to know our route round Old Sarum was of interest to you. Thanks for watching.
lovely piece of music to accompany, some fine footage.
Really nice to read comments like yours. As it's such a variation from usual walking activities, but also something different. Thanks for appreciation of music too Ken. 🙂
That was a lovely little film Shanita. Salisbury Cathedral looks like another great cathedral, love the cloisters and some of the pillars appeared a bit crooked, which adds to their charm. Your lovely music "So Far and Dawn Chorus" really fitted well with the scenes in the gardens and water meadows. All the best 👍
Hi Patrick. Thanks so much for watching and kind comments. I know its not our usual walking activities, but makes a nice change. Hope the crooked pillars weren't due to crooked filming angels.😯😉 Quite expensive now to tour the whole cathedral, so only parts filmed, but we have visited before charges introduced. Thanks for music comments too. Both tracks from earlier music production days.
Absolutely beautiful. The water is so clean to have the fish that size there, too. Beautiful composition, Shanita, I really loved the music. I loved the Swan too. I hadn't realised that Salisbury was on the water. I've never been. It's certainly a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Chiris. Thanks for comments. Yes we took a break there and a change from filming our usual walking activities, so I'm glad still enjoyed. Hope keeping well. All the best.
STAYED IN BOURNMOUTH FOR A FEW DAYS,VISITED THE NEW FOREST,WEYMOUTH AND SALISBURY CATHEDRAL,STUNNIG PLACE.
That's great Ken. Nice to know you made that journey and went to the same place as us.
Gosh, that's a fair trip down the M6, also visiting Stonehenge I note. The National Trust Figsbury Ring also looks like an interesting walk in that area.
Yes over a 200 miles journey. We had a holiday trip to Salisbury for two reasons. I was not only brought up in Bristol, so had childhood memories of the area and Dorset. The other reasons was my fascination for Stonehenge (due for upload). Old Sarum was an unexpected location. I've not heard of Figsbury Ring though, but always helpful to find new locations. Thanks Steve.
Wow this is a real change of scene for you both Shanita! 😃I went to Salisbury just the once I think when I lived down south. Love the castle ruins, especially seeing where you walked around those old walls, they're a fascinating sight. Enjoyed "Chill of the Night", a lovely gentle theme. All the best 👍
Hi Patrick. I omitted to mention in the description we had a holiday break in Salisbury because of my interest in Stonehenge (due to be uploaded), so we took the opportunity of exploring around parts of Wiltshire and Amesbury. Like yourself its nice to take in other areas. Glad you liked our change of scene. Also 'Chill of the Night' a variation on another track. Thanks so much for your support. Appreciated.👍🙂
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure. Thank you also.
Nice one
Thanks for commentating.
Thank you for sharing your video. I'm 629th new friend. Have a good weekend my friend~❤
I really enjoyed taking this walk with you virtually. Great video, great channel!
Lovely comments to read and pleased you enjoy the channel too. Many thanks.
Very beautiful nature
Thanks So much for comments.
The Pike was built in 1863 to commemorate the marriage of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. It's not difficult to find, I used to ride up there aged 10 on my bike from Mossley Road. That would be in 1955 when there was another Queen Regnant on the throne and the Prince of Wales became such in 1956 and invested in 1969.
Yes. I did research the information you mentioned in your comments. Thanks. Appreciated.
With this miserable, gloomy weather we are experiencing, it's nice to see those summery scenes Shanita. I've never seen a 'tithe stone' before either. There is a lovely old property at the Broad Lane end of Lower Lane called Tithe Barn. 🙂
Hi Chris. Yes our walks are behind but seasons change so quickly before uploads. We really saw quite a few things and the Tithe stone was one. I think I saw the Tithe barn you mentioned. Hope keeping well.
What to do about that downed Way marker...?
That's the question or problem isn't it?
So many picturesque places and so close to home. Some more interesting snippets from Michael, like the Tithe stone. The nicest Tithe barn I have seen is Rivington Hall Barn. We have been walking around Piethorne Valley, from one of your videos a few years ago, lovely walks with interesting history.
Thats great to read about you following a Piethorn route Steve. It's good to know our routes are helpful to walkers. Michael is so on tap with historical info too. We really enjoyed Hartshead .
my neck of the woods shanita some lovely scenery
Thought it would be your neck of the woods Ken. Thanks.
That was fantastic..Hartshead pike looked great, somewhere i have never been...the Tithe stone was interesting...funny how the quiet lane turned out to be the noisiest part of the walk..thanks for the video, really enjoyed it.
Hi Steve. Had a chuckle about the quiet lane being the noisiest part of walk. Same humour as me. 😄Thanks for that and glad you enjoyed. All best to you both.
I couldn't wait to watch this once I received the notification of your new upload! 😁 I've visited these places myself, think I did the same route as you did from Park Bridge via Rocher Vale to Hartshead Pike. Loved that shot you took Michael through the stile with the pike seen in the distance between the posts. I laughed loudly when you asked Michael if he was enjoying it whilst that tractor came by on the quiet lane 😂 Enjoyed "Atmospheric", nice synth with piano solos. Thanks Shanita, all the best 👍
Hi Patrick. Lovely comments to read. It's interesting how certain areas appeal more than other places. The fact we got lost a few times meant we actually did a more scenic longer route than otherwise. But you mentioned doing the same route without getting lost. 🤭👍Yes. I was being sarcastic about a quiet lane when a noisy tractor roared passed. All the best.
@@CountrysideWalking I just had to re-check - I did this in early 2017, but the route from Rocher Vale to the pike was to follow the Tameside Trail waymarks. I don't recall it being hard to follow, but that was over 7 years ago now so the path and waymarks may have deteriorated since then judging by the one post you found on its side in the mud 👍
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. 👍3
So pleased you liked the video. Certainly plenty to see on our way.
Thanks for sharing
A pleasure to share. Thank you.
Nice one
Glad you enjoyed.
I like castle old
There are so plenty of castles around to visit, but Hartshead Pike is set in a beautiful area.
Hello, this looks a lovely and enjoyable walk through the fields and beyond. It seemed you had a beautiful day for it also. We enjoyed watching this. All the best Chelsea and Mike
It was one of those walks we really enjoyed. Unexpected places and views around Tameside. Thanks for watching and your comments.
