I love my jumbo shrimp. It does have a distinct aural flavor tones specific to the brand. The only negative I have is they have mounted on boards vertically so the tubes project and at 90° parallel to the floor making it awkward to roll tubes as my hands are quite big as there is not a lot of real estate to work with First world problems Love my Manley labs gear❤❤❤❤❤
They are 599$ on the official Hifiman shop. I found a Black Friday offer in Spain for 525€ taxes included. For that prize they are now the Arya Steal. 😅 My preferences are not on bright headphones but these are really good in my opinion. I don't see them shouty at all. They are very neutral, a good bass. I am only slightly annoyed by small sibilance, but I think that it depends a lot on the recording, because the exact sounds are perfect depending on the album... Even when it has a small sibilance it's not aggressive at all
I own VC and its never aggressive or sharp, guess my tube amp drive them well. Atrium really soon join my VC and my tubes assure me that it must sounds amazing, not a single dynamic driver headphones I own sounds bad with it. Some people think that tubes are only to make gear sounds darker (fuller) thats not the case, serious tubes (not cheapest crap) are working in full spectrum of sound. High impedance cans on tubes gain energy at least in my case, thats sensation like those headphones "woke up" and hit you with everything they got but not with sharp edges, there is definition but not sharpness. Dont know if I say some bullcrap or not but I love good tube amps and high impedance headphones
Does enybody know if the Topping L50 will be ok to drive it?
Hey I have not found much info on these headphones. What would you say the sound staging is like?
On my schiit stack with a lyr+ and a sylvania bad boy NOS tube, the 800s sound fanstastic
You mentioned the Taboo.. is that still in the roster despite trying some major stuff like the Agartha? I've been trying to figure out where I want to take my next step from the Cayin HA-3A and the Taboo's high on the list but the wait time is nuts and they're tough to catch used.
The Taboo is my first headphone tube amp true love. I don't have a subjective angle on it but I just can't let it go no matter how much great gear comes through. I think the EL84 is a somewhat under appreciated tube. The front end on the Taboo allows for a tone of tube rolling as well as the flexible rectifier tube. The Lucid Mode is also a ton of fun to play with. There are plenty of "better" amps but the Taboo is a special one. I will note that it can not drive everything. It is powerful and drives most but it has its limits.
Makes little or no difference until you have at least $50,000 invested in your amplifier(s) and your line stage preamp.... And preferably $100K invested.
Thank you so much!😊
Very interesting review. I don't like IEMs neither, but need something portable. I was looking into new Sony MDR M1. But new will consider the 99 Classics.
I appreciate your quick takes, and would love your take on DCA E3.
the 99 Neos (the non-wood, cheaper version) were my first 'real' headphones. ive moved on from them ages ago, but i enjoyed them immensely for what they were at the time
I have these (99 Classic) and they are great. I'd say for those who can swing it, go with the 109 Pros. The 109 are just amazing for the cost. I do not listen to music via headphones too often, but enough to have made the upgrade. Also made an upgrade in cable, which helps, as long as the amplifier is good, there's a very noticeable difference. The 99 sounds great, but the 109 are capable of slight holography given the proper amplification, especially tube. Great detail and separation. Nice video! Can't really go wrong with the 99 if you like warm, present and forward sound. Thanks!
Soundstage wise, are these similar to the sr1a?
Yup, broadly speaking they have a similar presentation.
shut the fuck up about amps, snakeoil crap. video is done im out
Curious what rectifier that is and what tubes are stock with the unit? Any suggestion on changes to the stock tubes from Dan Wright? Thanks folks.
My ADHD didn't wait for the end of the video... lol. Thanks for the info on your tubes but I'm still curious if @DanWright-oy8fc has any suggestions.
SP3000+Sus+Enleum 23rm + Lazuli Ref + cable =Bliss!!!
idk what this is but looks cool
It's a headphone amplifier.
@@Mindartcreativity go outside with those subscriptions. Lmao
Great review. It’s on top of my buy list. Curious what grille option is on your Caldera?
Gold! They are stabilized spalted maple with satin wax oil finish, mag chassis.
Awesome video. I'm thinking of getting the tube buffer from Modwright. Think it would add some to my system. For the ease of getting tubes in and out (rolling), I find 'tube savers,' or adapters, really help. You can get some that are made with porcelain/ceramic and they essentially raise the tube, making it easier to change. Another benefit is that it puts less strain on the board over time as you tube roll.
Great tip, thanks!
what amp was your favorite with this headphone?
Most of the time the LTA Z10e.
ive heard really good things about these definitely on my list of eventual pickups
I'm in the process of ordering one.
Thank you for the great review Sine Craft! Was looking for a direct comparison between the aeolus and aeteurs and couldnt find much but glad you made one. Glad that you find the aeolus better for your tastes since I assume it is a general upgrade to the hd650/hd6xx (warm, lush mids) and the aeteurs is an upgrade to the hd600s (more neutral). Based on your review and some others, looks like Im lucky that the aeolus is the one i should go for since i love the hd6xxs and is cheaper of the two too 😂
Let me know what you think when you get it.
Great video thanks. I used to have some heresey 2 speakers and I loved them. I have just ordered some ex demo heresey 4s. I can’t wait to hear them.
I run this very Dac with a Rose RS130 streamer. Really nice match. Tons of upsampling options I play it thru a Luxman L507Z
Nice! How do you like the Luxman? I've been getting interested in Luxman and Accuphase integrated amps.
@@SineCraftAudio luxman is very relaxed and clear. No real house sound. Very real to what you put thru it
Solid video and review of the LS 99. I recently moved from the Modwright LS 100 to the LS 99. Agree with your commentary and what this preamp brings to the overall system. I also have the Modwright PH 9 phono preamp but am using the First Watt F8 as the amp. Dan and Modwright are first class and a delight to do business with!
Heck yeah. First Watt gear is pretty killer and I feel shares some common design ethos with Modwright.
Thank you for that!
You have lovely and effective descriptions of sound signature. Keep it up!
Would you recommend buying HE6 v2 for rock/metal? I really want to experience that rumble.
I imagine that would be a pretty fun combination.
Would like your opinion comparing the Tungstens to the Rad "0"'s...
Oh gosh, haven't heard those in a long while but from memory the Tungsten is going to be a lot more detailed and dynamic when properly driven.
Very nice review! Do you have plans to review the Caldera Closed? I am interested in your assessment and comparison. Cheers!
I do, hopefully in the next few weeks.
No this is the problem with slightly underpowering the Tungsten. Even the Portable they send it with is only about 70% of its potential. Once you give Tung fully 3 Amps and 35 volts it prison Shanks Susvara in all categories and by all metrics - but that usually requires a Speaker Amp or AVR, which no one wants to do, even to try once. @sinecraftaudio mentions in his review that he had to Pin the Volume on some Amps and he noticed the lack of bass, but I also notice that the Stage and Details reveal themselves as the drivers need power levels that literally intimidate most people to move fast enough to really truly unveil them. By this review Id say he only got about 70-80% out of them ever. B/c when you get it ALL you just KNOW
I hope my iFi Phantom is up to the task, when my "TUNG" finally arrives.
@@ReverendDr.Thomas Just plug it into your AVR Speaker Taps straight away if you feel like its sluggish or missing Bass or Soundstage. 300wpc at 8ohms makes it make Susvara sound so veiled thats its wierd to experience the Detail and Layering, the ACCURACY (Not Size) of the Soundstage... its so crazy. EDIT: this can be a cheap Amp, the power it needs is just insane - as are the improvements.
@@ReverendDr.Thomas to be fair reverend, that ifi could have 30mw for all you know. Diablo eternal.
@@En_Joshi-Godrez, yes, I am sure it has at least thirty milliwatts of power. 😬
@@ReverendDr.Thomas woh hold on, maybe that's only for 0.00001ms. That's a lot for ifi.
Fantastic video. All your vids are great. I’m sure you probably just had a brain fart, but 6L6’s are pentodes not triodes, but can of course be wired in triode mode or ultra linear for SE amps. Thanks for all the excellent info and videos. 🔊😊🎶
Thanks for the correction and the kind words!
Been trying to buy a tungsten for awhile , can never get one when they go up for sale
I ordered mine from the Mod House Audio's one and only authorized reseller, Mimic Audio.
outside of USA its almost impossible, price with taxes is silly, waiting time is outrageous, so yea its a hard pass even if its great headphone
@@soulfulfool, coincidentally, I was just informed today, that the custom cable for my Tungsten was sent to the USA from England, so hopefully it shouldn't be too many more months before they finally arrive here in Philippines. FYI, the so-called "Gebo" cables are produced by Viking Weave, in Great Britain, and delivered to Mr. Dietz' workshop in America.
i got so scared at 11:28-11:54
That was ominous dude. I heard purring or something and though it was predator coming out of cloak threatening him behind the camera
Ha! Just another example of my lackluster editing, and snub-nosed dog :)
First view, liked the review. Subbed!
When you say softness of caldera you mean vail? Every time I compared T to C Tungsten was always more refined clearer with better technicalities and in the same time still musical. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the contrasting point of view. I get life-like detail out of the caldera in my system that I love. The Tungsten is great too (especially considering the price in this crazy would 3 and 4k headphones) but overall less aligned to the style of presentation I prefer. What's the best amp paring you've found for the Tungsten?
@@SineCraftAudio so my favorite is my 300B tube amp(heavily modified) followed by v280 and I can do Burson Soloist 3x, also modified emotiva basx a-100 gets the job done with its ton of power.
Nice, would love to hear the Tungsten on a 300B rig. I had the ampsandsound Agatha for a while but sadly no more.

Brilliant review and comparisons. Thank you! One question. With these flagships at hand, do you feel one excels over the others at certain genres? I listen mostly to acoustic/alternative singer-songwriter - would Tungsten (or another) come up top in these softer, emotion-focused genres?
For reference, I currently have the He1000 V2, which you reviewed some time ago. Wondering whether the Tungsten (or brand new Heddphone 2 GT) would be a worthwhile ‘upgrade’ for these genres.
Really a taste / presentation preference call. I could see some people appreciating the crispness of the Tungsten or Susvara to pull forward nuance and detail from acoustic oriented performances while others might find it unnatural and instead dig the more fluid vibes of the Caldera or Empyrean. I personally enjoy both experiences but if I had to pick the Caldera with a powerful and detail oriented amp would be my go to.
@@johs12345 My Tungsten have yet to arrive, but I would stick with the HiFiMan for that particular genre of music.
@@SineCraftAudio, I prefer Caldera open to Susvara OG for rock music.
@SineCraftAudio I have the taboo MK IV, and am super excited to listen to my Calderas once I get my turntable setup finished in the next few weeks. I believe you have one, so would love to know what you think about the Taboo/Caldera combo. 😊
Great review, thanks!
Whoever says that cables dont make a difference is either ignorant or a moron lol
11:28 - brain fart? 😃
Any chance you could go further upstream starting at the wall? Power Conditioner? Source (PC/Streamer/Network player/CD player)?
Sure, but it gets less exciting ;) Trip light 14AWG power cables, Furman power conditioner, Mac connected via USB to my DAC.
Hard to concentrate on you presentation when you never stop flipping all the cables around in front of the camera. Very annoying , like I was watching a shell game. Relax a little next time.
Can you comment on how "open" these are? Do they block out sounds more like a hybrid or more like a full open like an HD800s?
Don't have them on hand any more but I think they are pretty open to external sound.
I previously was using a bluesound node and then a if zensteam as a room end point and am currently using the R7 as a room endpoint with the external power supply and there is a huge difference in SQ between these-deaper soundstage, richer sound, better timing etc This was achieved plugging my Draco DAC into the USBC socket. Looking at what else is available you would have to spend twice as much in my guess for any improvement.
These are not "the legendary HE6"... These sound nothing like the originals at all. Notably inferior in all aspects.
I would love to hear your impressions of the Enleum HPA-23rm with other TOTL HPs, Caldera, LCD5, Sus specifically
You will :)
"Like someone striking the keys on a piano" is such a good choice of words for expressing the sentiment you did in that moment.
Thank you so much. We appreciate it.♥
