The Mazda driven by Yoshimi Katayama and Allan Moffat was having front brake trouble and dropped out of contention to win, well done to Peter Brock and Larry Perkins for the win.
If I am not mistaken, one of the factors behind Caltex Chase being added to the circuit was following the death of Mike Burgmann during the James Hardie 1000 in 1986, am I right?
Shame Morris went that hard, he was catching the DJ car with plenty of time to pass Gibson without taking risks like that. Would have made a hell of a finish if he didn't crash, and caught up to French.
I was there that day. LOL, drove to the track in the back of a Bongo van, 2-stroke. The road was open and the drive down the dipper in that little Suzuki was terrfying.
Old Aussie here of 73 mechanic & went to these Races many years in a row & Loved Alan Moffit ! Very fast ,very smooth ,Reliable despite what many may think ? Very conservative ,Very humble & organised much he did himself,so knew the Cost & effort Required it took to Win ? Possibly because of his Nationality ,many didn't understand him ,took many things for granted about Him,which over time, proved incorrect ! Always Cared for his car & nursed them often to get home ,where many other drivers would not do? A master to watch ,in Concernt_ ration , placement ,control to get the job done ! Thank U for these old Races ,I will never forget them or the great Drivers !
geez man these cars were basically stock, still have the rear seats and passenger seats along with the stock dashboards. only thing not stock seems to be the engine, suspension, tires, and brakes, looking at the cars in the pits, they didnt even take out the sound dampening material from the cars.
God Seven were crap in following the race, the Johnson pass on Perkins was one of the few changes in the lead and not only did they miss it it took them a lap to figure it out. Year after year you'd have to figure it out yourself where everyone was running and the gaps.
Yeah they pretty much missed everything back in those days, they were obsessed with fucking racecam, we only found out from Alan Grice himself about an hour later that his car was actually bumped off the track, which you didn't see from inside the car. Nostalgic but infuriating
The podium with John Goss hardly able to even shake the bottle after holding himself in place because his seat was broken. For at least a couple of hundred race kays and at the end still holding Brock at 30sec. And how Gossy grabbed that brass ring and didn't let go.
Allan Moffat as a commentator worked beautifully, it was a pleasure to hear the intelligent in-car with Dick Johnson. I had just finished 84 pt2 and Dick had stopped from lack of fuel, the stupid commentator doing the in-car just went on and on about how bad is it for you Dick. And Jill in the pits being scrutinized in the hope she'd cry or something. Been watching all the earlier Bathurst telecast's as well and Evan Green was good value, can't even bear listening to any from the last twenty years coz they commentate for wood ducks who know nothing about cars. And everyone has an O added to their name Gibbo, explain why they need air in their tyres Larko matey. No criticism of Mark Larkham intended, he's the real deal.
These old Bathurst videos are great, watched it on the day and a coupla times since then. It's hard listening to the commentators sucking up to Prince Leopold with the His Royal Highness stuff but. He probably got sick of it also. Fury shoving Harvey off the track was epic and if you watch the previous year Fury during the in car drops an f bomb and there was no seven second button then, I thought Fury was brilliant.
After 1980 and a year of Dick Johnson and the 'rock' saga boring everyone to death, all Australians were glad to finally hear the end of it with the start of the 1981 race. But then of course, Johnson drama again when he didn't really win the 1981 race.
The bits with no commentary originally contained adverts. These breaks are loaded with atmosphere, the camera people are relaxing and you get a feel for the reality of why everyone is there. Normal type people, not preening publicity hounds. This race was truly magnificent, a saga with a cast of thousands. I miss it like I miss our motor industry.
These were the best days of Bathurst ever today in 2024 i wouldn't bother crossing the street to meet so called racing driver's no one comes close to BROCK MOFFAT PERKINS HARVEY for ever 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
“Are you happy with the performance you’ve given today?” The sarcasm is dripping from that question 😂😂 - well I’ve bent the suspension, so I don’t think Alan is happy with me, but yeah we are in second place 🤦♂️
I was 18 in 82, I miss my youth :)
Mike Raymond was as excitable as Murray Walker.
This was Dickie's race to win.
Real racing Group C/ Group A, not this bullshit parity supercar POO!💩
51:40 -52:10 Kevin Bartletts comment and the grin on his face 😂 you just dont see that anymore 😂 the good old days of Bathurst 😂
Those Falcons were monsters, and I'm GM all the way.
Well dazzashazza, this is the definitely the race from 1983.

Coverage better than supercars today thanks Ch7 70’s-80’s
Is there a part 3?
What the hell happened to the Chris Heyer car? Did you see it catch fire in the pit lane?
2024. No one can remember last weeks race cos it was boring as f&$k
This is so much easier and interesting watching than modern day coverage. No leaderboard aways taking up half the screen. Cripes, what happened.
2024 race boring AF.
Small truck at 52:52
Bring back the good old days. Forget about the money and sponsors. Give them all a go again.
Wasnt the camero bb
Best intro to motorsport I have seen with Brock, Moffat ,Johnson and Grice.
I was there that day. LOL, drove to the track in the back of a Bongo van, 2-stroke. The road was open and the drive down the dipper in that little Suzuki was terrfying.
It's amazing how the cameras missed absolutely everything back in those days.
Amazing how the cameras manage to actually miss everything.
Back to the Box
03:10 "We have a touch-off!" lol 😂

17:26 Economaki is more professional and knowledgeable in 3 minutes than Raymond is in 6 hours.
How to tell an aged care company to fuck off in 2024
How to tell someone your car is "fucked" only a 2024 video can tell you that.
I think the commentator meant to say about John Surtees he might have got mixed up.
If they did a 12 hr Bathurst all those holdens would break down😂

Great year if your a Holden/ GM fan !

Yeah, same as hearing ad nauseum about Brock's 9 wins in 13 cars while bashing his wives.
Some places are indeed a little bit dangerous, says Evan Green, with an evil look.
God that 308 in Brocks car sounds so sweet.

A different race now with safety cars
MacPherson struts on the VB, and road clinging suspension makes all the difference.

Peter Janson what a great driver he was an amazing MAN Awesome Australian.
The camera operators "cutting edge" were fantastic , live from car to helicopter then from helicopter to car to track .
Grice & Brock were flying , in those cars that were growling fantastic sound .

Shame Jim Richards hit the oil, that BMW was going to ROMP it in!
No exit road, sand at the end of the straight. Who was designing these tracks......daffy duck.
