Board on the Floor
Canada

Welcome to BOARD ON THE FLOOR!
My name is Chris Bavota and I am a filmmaker based out of Montreal, Canada. I was introduced to modern board games during the pandemic when a good friend explained how you could play certain games by all by yourself. The idea of solo board gaming became a quick obsession, and since I have a bunch of camera equipment sitting around, I thought it would be cool to create this channel to chronicle my journey as I dive deeper and deeper into the hobby.
Each week as I get my hands on games and add them to my collection, I'll discuss every new additions and the reasons why each one piqued my interest. Expect to see reviews, play throughs, unboxings and more.

Board Game Burnout | Reaching my Saturation Point
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
Something happened over the last few weeks that caused me to start to feel a little anxious about playing board games. I was so into the hobby that every day for the past 8 months I had played a game. But then I stopped and I wasn't too sure why. In today's video, I discuss what I have been feeling for the last little while in regards to board games and this channel.
Waste Knights 2nd Edition Board Game | Kickstarter vs Retail
Переглядів 3,8 тис.3 роки тому
I had originally picked up the retail version of WASTE KNIGHTS when I read that people compared it to POSTHUMAN SAGA, which is a game I really enjoy. About a week later, I saw someone selling the Kickstarter edition and thought I should pick it up so that I could see the difference between the two versions. In today's video, I compare the Kickstarter and Retail versions of WASTE KNIGHTS to see ...

When I was putting together my list of Top 10 Best Horror-Themed Board Games, for some reason I overlooked adding two of my favorite games. The only reason I can think of such an unforgivable oversight, is that maybe I see them as only fantasy games. But why? In today's video, I open a vein and bleed all over these two fantasy games to find the horrors within. Intro 0:00 Tainted Grail 1:29 Gloo...
Alien: Fate of the Nostromo | Director's Cut Rules & Gameplay

To continue along with my month of horror-themed board gaming, I got Alien: Fate of the Nostromo to the table and tested out designer Scott Rogers variant rules which for some reason he calls "The Director's Cut." I can honestly say that they do make the game upwards of 60% harder, which you will totally understand after watching my short but sweet playthrough. About the game: "In ALIEN: Fate o...

Waste Knights 2nd Edition was Kickstarted a couple of years ago and finally made its way to retail recently. I picked up the retail version at my FLGS because I had read that people compared it to Posthuman Saga, which is a game I love, and the retail version was the only copy I could find. I wanted to see for myself if the comparisons were valid, and if maybe, Waste Knights could potentially k...

I'm a sucker for cartooney illustrations and board games that really stand out for their design style. That's what attracted me the most when I first saw Brew. Then the more I read about the gameplay, the more I needed to get my hands on a copy. The only drawback, was that there was no solo rules. It's a 2 - 4 player game. :( But that hasn't stopped me yet from figuring out how to play a game l...

Mansions of madness is badass. #9 tho.
Great
The game market is Waaaaaaaaaay over saturated and has been for 5 plus years. I have NOT bought a new game in that time and refuse to do so.
What was the last game you bought?
Would you say Elder Sign is the easiest to learn for an absolute beginner?
It’s a very easy game to learn. I’ve taught it to my children who were 8 and 10 at the time. Also taught it to my friend’s 5 year old.
Glad I kept my two copies of the original core set. In EVERY instance of the different cards shown in the new set, I much prefer the art of the old edition by far. As to the “chaos bag”, I prefer my large Crown Royal bag to that smaller Chaos Bag. As to the larger box for storage, I already have a custom wooden box, so no gain there. The only things I see different that I like are the First Player Token and the “3” and “5” count Resource, Horror, and Damage Tokens. I’ll pick these up separately somewhere online. Carry on….🫡
cant believe the designer couldn't let go of the "scooby doo" rules even in the D.C., "directors cut" maa batt without character deaths in an alien game👎🏼👎🏼not good enough scott r,(or whatever his name was...
WHY NOBODY TALK ABOUT 'LIFEFORM', probably the best one out there dammitt!!😫😫
Great tutorial; thank you for the time and effort you placed into this video! Newcomers to this video such as myself, should kindly be aware that the newer 2.0 rules update does in fact change some rules. For example, the menhir's now provide light to all adjacent surroundings etc.)
6:14 it makes no sense the characters are running calmly away, either one dice should be rolled with a 80% chance to "panic" ( running in a random direction) or they automatically run in a random direction which the player can NOT control!!
🌕+🦧
if u cant die in a alien inspired game its just bs too me, no i dont care if its "family friendly" or not, why on earth would anyone make a family friendly alien themed alien game anyway, like if they would make a family friendly alien MOVIE, NOOOOT😵😵😵
I really appreciate this video. I also am a visual learner and this helped a lot.
Thanks for a really interesting video. Not sure I’d be interested in the game. Seems to be just a movement puzzle game without a lot of depth. And crew members not getting killed? That seems pretty unthematic.
yeah i loved CDMD so much i sold all my other lovecraft games.
I have all of Bloodborne and I love it.
It’s a great game. I had the whole thing too and got rid of the expansions because I knew I would never have the time to get through it all.
@@BoardontheFloor I love the video game too much to do that. But I got tinkering paws insert to minimize shelf space. I rarely get inserts because they're pricey but in this case, I had to. I am 3 expansions in. I play 1-2 expansions a year when the mood strikes!
I wish these games were designed to fit all expansions in the same box. The shelf space required ends up being too much for me. Which expansion is your favorite for Bloodborne?
@@BoardontheFloor From what I've played: the hunter's dream. My love for Gherman as a character affects this for sure😂
What about final girl ?
At the time of the video I had not yet tried Final Girl. And as much as it is probably one of the most thematic horror games out there, it didn’t really click with me. Not exactly sure why, though. But I had season 1 & 2 and ended up selling them both.
I'm still holding out hope that this channel comes back someday!
Thanks. Been too busy over the last little while but hoping to get some new videos up once things settle down.
@@BoardontheFloor That would be great!
Great vid 👍. Tough game to get the rules and errata 100 % right. Still an extremely fum game in my opinion.
Looking to pick the original core set (and two small expansions) up tomorrow for just £15. Now, I'll only ever play this two player and I'm fine with setting up the two investigator decks as this really only needs done once. So for the price, probably worth going for right? Ta
That’s a great deal and more than worth it.
Alien FOTN is not a complex game. But it’s the only game I’ve ever played that truly evokes the mood of the movie it’s based on. Nostalgia is a good way of describing that. The game works on two levels because a strange thing happens. Adults who have seen the movie bring their memories of the more brutal scenes to the game and it comes alive for them. Kids who haven’t seen the movie just enjoy it as a chase game.
I totally agree. And if you love Alien, I think Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game is incredible for letting you feel like you are experiencing the movie. Actually the first four movies. It’s so much fun.
An excellent and enjoyable tutorial. Looking forward to my first game.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your playthrough.
Doesn't ash move to the nearest scrap
Nearest scrap or crew member.
Thank you for your time and production. I just recently received Cryo for Christmas and I have found your video most helpful. Happy New Year! 2024
I also love this game!
Hey there. I`m currently playing SK RoB Chapter 5B. Looking at your game you have 2 Discovery cards IN PLAY. So do I. But started looking at other YT videos and they all have like 5 Discovery cards in play, even those from Chapter 1...Thoughts?
I think it all depends on what direction you go in during those first few chapters.
Little surprised not to see Nemesis on the list. Seems like it would be right up your alley. Don't Look Back is a great game as well. Solo or with your favorite group of victims, i mean friends...
I had Nemesis and played it a handful of times solo. It didn’t really click for me. I heard it is a way stronger game multiplayer but I just never had a chance to test it out with a group.
@BoardontheFloor you will all die .... and have a blast doing it! I could see it being a little underwhelming solo though.
You forgot Everdell...i saw it back there. Not horror, you say? Remember friends...Winter is Coming.
Check out perdition's mouth. Very dark and scary. Pretty gruesome too. Machina Arcana is awesome too. And if you can find it for a decent price. Deep Madness is incredible.
I’ve played Machina Arcana and Deep Madness. Very thematic and dark. I’ve seen Perditon’s Mouth around but haven’t had a chance to play it. Will have to add it to my list.
I think I am undergoing board game fatigue myself. I find it extremely difficult to learn new games. Even easy ones, it makes me stressed out tired, confused last time furing the gaming night for the first time i cut the evening short. The party wanted to play anything of my much to big collection, but i realised i am not feeling confident explaining even those I played multiple times and was frankly not in the mood for playing anything.
It’s a weird feeling. But it does come and go for me. Recently, I’ve felt the desire again to take on learning some new games, and relearning some old ones. Took months to get to this point though.
Cthulhu DMD is one of my favourites as well. I painted the first season and then, after playing all the scenarios, sold it with season 2. Regretted this and 6 months later bought another season 1, which had been painted and season 2, which has now been painted as well. Awaiting season 3. Good call on Lovecraft as a person, as this is often glossed over. Bloodborne is another favourite of mine. I didn't get all the expansions, but I do have a lot. I am currently painting it all after completing the core box about 12 months ago.
I have to paint season 2 and the Unspeakable Box (which I somehow managed to get my hands on). Then I won’t be too overwhelmed when season 3&4 arrive. 😏
Ripley, Parker & Lambert = the smartest people on that barge. Sorry, Dallas, but you're lucky you're pretty.
Subbed! Not by the way, thank you for not having pointless music polluting and fuzzing out speech. I can understand what you're saying!
Thanks for watching.
Are you out of the UA-cam biz?
Not really. I’ve just been a little busy. Hoping to make a few vids this summer.
@@BoardontheFloor awesome. I enjoyed your focus on horror board games
Thanks. I’m a huge fan of horror, in all formats. 😏
Thanks very much for the hand-holding, and especially for showing how Ash is supposed to behave. Well done and educational. I think I can play now.
Have fun!
Woooooo pump the breaks, The Original Mummy Brandon Frasier not Tom Cruse Mummy?? The Original Mummy will always be Boris Karloff there buddy. 😂😂😂 But great video and love these games you showed. Also I think Black Cat is a must have horror movie.
True enough. 😅
Came to say the same thing. THE Boris Karloff!
😂 What’s worse for me is I actually have a bust of Karloff’s Mummy on my shelf. The shame!?!
Hey! I really enjoy the content you put out! I still have to play most of the games you mentioned. For the ones you did I’ll sure watch the recommended movies first 😬 Looking forward to the next video/theme you have in store! 🚀
Hope you enjoy them.
This is the best and most in depth top ten run through I have come across. Nicely explained without spoilers. Thankue.
Thanks for watching. Any horror faves I may have missed?
@@BoardontheFloor No, but I would like to say I appreciate the way you have explained much more about each game rather than going through a list with very little detail, as most seem to do. I am relatively new to this style of game and made the move away from video games recently because this sort of thing seems, somehow, more organic to me, for want of a better word.
I love horror films all year long - always have. I have seen a goodly number of your suggested picks and you are on top of it. Thanks much!
I know I'm an outlier, but my favorite characters are Dallas and Kane.
in this game??
What does the revised one call for in terms of sleeves?
You can find that info here: www.sleeveyourgames.com/sleeves/8473/arkham-horror-the-card-game-revised-core-set
good stuff!! do you focus on solo mostly?
Mostly. Though lately I have been playing a little with my brother-in-law.
@@BoardontheFloor were looking for solo focused reviewers for a series of standalone solo games we made if you'd be interested =)
@@terriblegames For sure. That would be great.
I have watched my son in law play Bloodborne. I was wondering if I would like it as a board game. I think I might get it.
I like it a lot. And there are so many variations between the different hunters and scenarios.
I am new too just in 2022. I really like your content if that matters
Thanks for watching. Which are some of your favorite games so far?
@@BoardontheFloor I love Arkham Horror LCG, I am obsessed with that game. I resisted buying any game with miniatures, but a nice man at my FLGS said Zombicide was really fun and I might get my family into it. Unfortunately or fortunately I have discovered I love painting miniatures and then playing the game. Sorry for the long answer, but I tend to like horror themed games. Cthulhu death may die is in my collection and I have played the first scenario very fun. Again thanks for your content it is well done and useful to me.
It’s hard not to want to paint those minis. They just look so much cooler when painted. I only started painting about a year ago but I dedicated so much time to it because I wanted to improve as fast as I could.
@@BoardontheFloor I have only been doing it for 2 months now. But it is really satisfying. I love the look even though they are not perfect they are great for me. Thanks for responding. I appreciate your input
UA-cam was a great tool. And I just purchased Angel Giraldez’s mini painting course on Domestika to try to up my game. Haven’t gone through it yet so I don’t know how good it is.
Glad to see Village Attacks on your list, I have the original KS version, LOVE IT. Check out Deep Madness, as well as Dark Rituals: Malleus Malificarum, these games are stupid good, and should be right up your alley. Dark rituals actually has some cross compatibility with Village Attacks
Thanks for the suggestions. Will totally check them out.
A very good comparison video. Thanks a lot!
Are stand alone adventures going to be revised in one big box ?
I think each long scenario, ie. Dunwich Legacy, Path to Carcosa, will be re-released in one big box to include all the mythos packs for that specific scenario.
Oh wow! I didn't know you were back! Awesome!
Happy New Year, BotF. I look forward to your content in ‘23!
Thanks. Same to you. All the best in 2023!
Yes, Legendary Encounters Alien is fantastic. I love it. Recently received Zombicide: Undead or Alive and have logged about 15 plays so far. I play it purely solo, six survivors and flexible player turn order. Fantastic zombie game.
Unique and fun video topic. I’ve seen most of these movies except Sanctum and the head hunter. Watchlisted. Thanks! Have you seen Messiah of Evil? Fantastic Lovecraft-esque film. Have you heard of the game, Room 25? Very much based on the movie, Cube.
I had started watching Messiah of Evil last year but the copy I had was of such low quality that I wanted to wait until I got my hands on a better version. Haven’t heard of Room 25, but I do love Cube so I will definitely look for it. Thanks.
