This is the third video highlighting the Long Hirston Modules. We had the privilege of operating them at the N Gauge Society Exhibition at the National Railway Museum in York 2023. We did not have space for the full set of modules so we decided to change the era and displayed steam locomotives and green diesels from the 1960s.

This video tells the story of Direct Rail Services (DRS) from its inception in 1995 to 2008. The remainder of the story will follow in Part 2. I follow the history as closely as possible. However it is not a definitive history of DRS as it is limited by the models that are, or have been, available in N Gauge.

    Very interesting to see and hear your locos today Neil. Does the sound start as you give power to the track? As ever a very enjoyable 20 minutes spent at Leefield and Ashpeth. You really do have a great layout. I must go back and look again at the tours of the layout you did some years ago. Stephen

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433 4 місяці тому

      HI Stephen, Thanks for the compliments, again. The sound decoders do need more power than a normal loco. You increase the power to the track, slowly, in order to get the start up sounds and for the loco to idle before moving off. Cheers, Neil.

  • @PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland
    @PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland 4 місяці тому

    Hi Neil, it's great that sound is now available with DC but I think it should be pointed out that not all decoders will operate on DC and it could result in a failure. Most new decoders will though.

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433 4 місяці тому

      Hi, Yes it is interesting the variety. Sometimes the settings have not been set correctly. I recently purchased a new Class 68 with sound and it was dead on DC, simply because the sound chip had not been set for DC. Fortunately, a friend knew how to adjust the settings and now it works beautifully. Cheers, Neil.

    JAPANESE MODELS USUALLY INCLUDE A NUMBER OF TECHNOLOGIES NOT FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD !!! The only reason KATO have made this model is because the real thing is A Hitachi Japan built train. And simply an updated version of the original 3ft 6in gauge Azuma units of 25 years ago in Japan. So the product will sell well in Japan ! Japan incidentally has the Worlds largest Model Railway following. So big in fact that there are 3.4 times more Japanese Railway Modellers than the whole of the rest of the WORLD put together. The Japanese outline KATO N catalogue is 500 pages !!!! KATO is number 2 in Japan, TOMIX being number 1 in sales, & the Worlds largest model train manufacturer. You will note that the model has "Flexi mounting" couplings designed to expand the distance between vehicles in curves, and reduce the gap to something more realistic on the straight. This has been standard on virtually ALL Japanese manufacturers models for at least 30 years. Further the mechanism for EMU type models should be invisible, hidden below the seating in an intermediate vehicle. Further it will most likely have a double flywheel drive, and may even have the latest 7 pole skew armature can type motor. Which is why Japanese models are always smoother than even very expensive (German & Swiss) Gutzold, Lemaco or Fulgurex models but a tenth of the price. The Kato 5-car Azuma retails in Japan at about £120.00. (March 2024 prices).

    Do you want a tip. For the final revering to depot you would need too driver as like in york to reverse on scarb line boothem Norm u find any driver to do the short run(have seen a them use a tpe driver) this is as there needs to be a driver in the cab at all times. So they can change direction as long as there is a driver in the cab when it changes. This is as it’s on a running like not a station. Once at ststion it would stop to let other driver off and carry on. I was surprised to see diff toc drivers not just northern only

My station and location is the terminus of a Scarborough style branch with same number is stations and type of stations plus the unbuild haxby. As the Scarborough has. The main station is set on the ECML and next station to York for LNER services (if stopping there) It also has More service. I have 1 voyager per hour to Birmingham (unsure where after) via leeds A morning out eve in open access london service. An houely tpexpress service calling at the malton style station then leeds Manchester(unsure yet as to final destination) And some northern services: The Leeds York but every 2 hours not hourly (as logistics of ending this station and not ending york) all stations to York, the hourly York Blackpool as semi fast just malton style station. And a morning York Sheffield service (thing goes via pontefract) all stopper to York. At York all services run the regular real world route and station stops expect if any service would pass ur layout stations. So I get a better idea of where it is and so when I finish building my layout trains when the route passes you stations will call at them and add them to my service pattern and if I use sound added to the station calling at lists on the station announcements. Absolutely smashing video there can’t wait for part 2. But i thought your next videos were going to be about GBRf

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433 7 місяців тому

      Hi Liam, Sorry it was not GBRf. I know that company is your favourite, but after a very difficult 2023 I felt I needed to get back on line as swiftly as I could. Researching the history of GBRf and organising all the locos and stock is a far bigger job than I realised. Hopefully, I will manage it in the future. Cheers, Neil.
