Hi, I'm Lianne, the potter behind Studio LP Ceramics. In 2019 I left my office job and became a full time potter working in my home studio, and I want to empower other potters to build a thriving business of their own that they love. As well as sharing my own makes and behind the scenes views, I'll be sharing tips, tricks and tools that will help you run your own joyfully successful pottery business. I want potters to thrive thanks to efficient production techniques that will increase your sales and profit.
How to extrude handles in pottery and avoid cracks in handles
Making handles can be tricky, whether you are a beginner or a more experienced potter. There are lots of ways to add handles to your mugs, but extruding handles is one of the easier and (in my experience) more refined looking options. It gives a really consistent look and is pretty mess free.
Here's how I also manage to avoid cracks when attaching handles, this works with extruded or pulled handles just as well.
Thanks to Joe at Old Forge Creations for his tips on reducing air bubbles when loading clay. He's on IG and YT where he posts lots of helpful videos you should check out!

How to create consistent curved forms on the potters wheel with profile ribs
Переглядів 29 тис.Рік тому
Curves are tricky to throw so I’ve designed profile ribs to help you throw consistent curves quickly Buy them here: studiolpceramics.com/products/throwing-profile-ribs
How do you not get a ton of slip buildup on the rib?
Love the look of this mug, would love a video on how you made it so organic looking❤
I wonder if you can make a globe with earth's map. Really interesting.
Cute! I’m a beginner, but can’t wait to give it a try
Who makes these and sells them? I need a bisque one to paint myself.
Great tip! Thank you! Love your channel.❤️
This was really educational. Thank you for explaining what you were doing and why, and what to watch out for. Of love to get a set of your ribs.
👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you for including the measurements you look for as far as opening and height! A great video!
No problem 😊 Glad that was helpful and thanks for the feedback!
I can totally relate to the rattle effect if you get clay inside the closed form 😂 I sometimes pour a little glaze inside, roll it around a bit so the pieces stick into the glaze and they will fuse to the inside and not be able to roll around...
Ohh that's clever!
Nicely done! You’ve given me ideas and inspiration (new to throwing) the possibilities are endless!
Excellent excellent video. I just ‘discovered’ you. Hope you have others. Do you strive for an orange glaze for these?
So many helpful tips here, drawing the mug profile on the bat is such a gamechanger! 1:45
Right?! It really is, that angle can make your handle warp and not be straight too which is so annoying.
This is so helpful, thanks for the effort!!
What a beautiful home and little girl!!
I have this extruder and I love it! Great idea!
OMG YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!! How have I not seen this done before!! You’re a genius!! Thank you so much.
Glad I could help!
I’m a handbuilder and have been making strap handles for way too long!! I’ve been looking for a new way to make handles but not have to pull them. So glad you came up on my feed. I do have a question about attaching handles. I have such a problem with attaching them evenly on the mug. They always end up being off. Like the bottom is off to the right or left too much etc. I just can’t get them even! I look at the handle on the pieces from above and each side I step back etc. The problem I think may be my eyes!! I have a very strong prescription for my glasses and one eye is much worse than the other. I don’t know what to do but if you have any ideas please share.
Some potters use a laser level, check old Joe Thompson of Old Forge Creations, I think he has some videos showing it and it helps keep it straight 👍
Thank you so much! I’ve had problems with using ribs. They were cutting too much into the base and literally cutting my pot from the wheel. Your technique here is really helpful.
great video!
Thank you!🙏
I greatly enjoyed clay working and building kilns. My initial first pulled handle coffee mug made me quite proud and standing chatting with other potterers each with their own mugs. I learned the error of not properly securing the handle to the mug when the full of coffee mug shattered on the floor as I still held the handle. I did go on to much better craftsmanship.
What is the name of the sharp triangle shaped tool from the beginning? Looked quite helpful.
Hi, this is actually a trimming tool but I use it when throwing. It's from Sacra
Leanne, what glazes do you use for projects like this? I am wondering if the glaze colors will stay where you put them and not run together.
I'd recommend Amaco personally, there's a lot of glaze groups on Facebook that share layering tests, but best to do your own tests on pinch pots first I think.
Beautiful🥰
Wooooooooow! This IS marvelous!!! 🥰💥🍊🍑
Amazing!
Amazing teacher. Looking forward to the next video!
That’s so kind of you to leave that feedback! I’m working on it! Just finished a big commission and YT videos are next on my todo list 😊
Really descriptive, video with good tips... iyou explain everything well, but succinctly. seriously this one of the better instructional videos out there for ceramics
Thanks so much for watching and for that feedback. I really appreciate it 😊
I agree
Nice... Iam a new subscriber
i just ordered the ribs! i cannot wait to use them in my next session. love your videos, excellent teaching!
Thank you so much for the order and feedback. I promise I’m trying to make more videos in between normal making.
This was really helpful! Gonna go home tonight and practice!
Creative thinking, love it!
What is that batt system?
Hartley and Noble
oh yea those are so good
Adorable 🥰😍
Brilliant!
Now I want to try throwing a pumpkin!🎃
Do it!! They are so fun and the glazing possibilities 🤔😍
Lovely, educational video. Beautiful result! Well done 🎃😊
Thank you 😊
I love rib A, but I do struggle with it, as I lose center when shaping and occasionally the mug pops off the bat while I'm shaping it. I must not be making my base wide enough.
Hi! If the mug is popping off you’re probably right that the base isn’t wide enough to start with as the rib cuts into the base a fair bit it will lose adhesion when you start the undercut. If it’s pulling off centre it might be because you aren’t pulling all the way up the wall before stopping a pull but its hard to diagnose without seeing you throw. Keep at it and I’m glad you’re loving them despite being a bit tricky!
BIG BRAIN 🤯❤
Muy bueno
Amazing thanks!!! ❤
Lovely video, definitely trying these! Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks for letting me know, I hope you enjoy making them!
AWESOOOOME!
Genius! 👌🏼🔥 I was so immersed in watching the mug take shape, that I forgot about the 'tool' you created; until you reminded me again, at the end 😂 Perfect outcome. Genius idea. Lovely product, love it.
With your wheel at max speed it will make it difficult for beginners to go trough the whole process you discribed .If the pot is not perfectly thrown at max speed it will become a blob :) Better slow down the wheel? Just sayn ;)
Hi Tom, thanks for watching and giving some pointers to other beginners. Personally I find if the wheel is too slow you will struggle using the profile tools but you’re right there is an in between each potter has to find for themselves. Some will prefer slower while others prefer it faster. I wouldn’t recommend profile tools to complete beginners, they are better as an intermediate tool as can be tricky!
❤❤❤❤
You are a skilled potter.
Wow 🙏 thank you
How pretty!
😊 I’m very lucky to have such happy roses!
beautiful! now I just gotta get better at ceramics
You can do it! Cylinders are key so practice those the most. Everything starts from a cylinder.
Thank you❤
