I'm considering putting a slow cooker on the "warm" setting, under the wooden floor if we get to below -10 this winter. we got down to -17 last winter. any one have any thoughts on using a slow cooker for this? It turns itself on and off all night too, so I assume it'll save a bit of energy that way. Maybe even place it in the coop if I have to.
Thank you for the help😊.
Thank you for making this video! Lots of helpful tips :)
Very interesting, and I will be rewatching this in the future. Lots of helpful information. I do have one question. I heard someone elae say removing trees helped with predators because predators like perching in the trees and swooping down from their perch to get a chicken or two. Are there maybe other factors relating to prehaps climate or location I might not be thinking about? Thank you in advance.
Thank you for the idea of using spray foam in the tire to help insulate it to keep water from freezing!
i use old tire straw black rubber water tub
Thank you for your comment. Yes, straw could be used as an insulating material inside the tire with no rim in combination with the rubber dish. Thank you for sharing what materials you use and for being here on the channel.
Hello Sierra, thank you for sharing how to help keep water from freezing without electricity. I love the tier idea. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
You're very welcome! I'm very happy you enjoyed the video. Always wonderful to hear from you. Thank you for your support and for being here on the channel. Wishing you and your flock a beautiful day!
Great tips! My best tip is to have more than one water source….gives me a bit more “just in case..” allowance. Never thought about the metal dishes being an issue. I like them as they’re so easy to clean. Guess I’ll need to find a non-toxic plastic container 🤷🏻♀
I totally agree, multiple food and water stations just in case is a great idea, not just in the winter season. Multiple food and water stations also contribute to flock harmony and make it easier for less dominant flock members to eat and drink without harassment. I use both metal and rubber livestock dishes too, but as temperatures drop below freezing in my region I switch primarily to my rubber and plastic dishes. Metal dishes are not an issue but they will react differently to freezing temperatures as opposed to plastic or rubber. Metal loses heat more quickly than rubber or plastic do because rubber and plastic insulate and can hold warmer temperatures for longer. I get lots of use out of my metal dishes in the summer as they help the contents stay cooler more effectively. In my region most daily winter temperatures will be below 35 degrees F in which case I use my plastic and rubber dishes to keep the contents from freezing for longer. Thank you for your comment and for being here on the channel!

@@joannc147 Thank you very much for your kind words! Let me know if you have any video ideas that would be especially helpful or fun for you. I'm always happy to get new ideas. Wishing you and your flock a wonderful day ahead!
@@ChuckTheRooster ideas: a small version of a “flock block” wherein food bits can be held and picked apart by the chickens. Maybe an oatmeal base with some seeds, nuts and bits of meat? I don’t want to buy the comm’l blocks at @18 each as my girls eat that up in about 4 days (aided ny the Squirrel Squad, no doubt). Another food idea would be raising winter grubs or bugs .i think I need to start a worm farm? Struggling to get some high protein into my girls as they finish their molting. Keep posting - you are SO HELPFUL! 🐓🐓🐓
Excellent video! If you can I would enjoy a video about “Thanksgiving menu recommended for chickens” & “How to grow worms or grubs to save money”. I know that might not be your expertise but any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Those are excellent chicken breeds. Thank you for sharing the experiences from your flock so we can all learn and grow from our different flock styles, breeds, and experiences. I have had very positive experiences with our small bantam silkie, Sugar.
Hello Sierra, love the things you share. You’re very wise. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words and support. Thank you to you as well for all you do to help people learn about their chickens. Wishing you and your flock a beautiful day!
I did lots of research before getting my first chicks. I ended up with Wyandotte silver lace. They are friendly, hardy for Kentucky, and my 5 pullets lay 4-5 eggs a day. Much more than I expected.
I'm so happy to hear you picked an excellent chicken breed for your family and your region! Keep growing and learning with your flock. Thank you for being here on the channel and for taking excellent care of your chickens!
Very useful info, thank you. If you want a smaller chicken that also lays lots of eggs, true bantams probably won't do this. True bantams lay less eggs per year, as you mention. Useful breeds for lots of eggs are Sussex 'small breed' (in the UK, not sure about USA or Canada?). These birds are not quite as small as a true bantam but they are much smaller than their full size relation. They look the same and lay just as many eggs. I have a flock of small breed speckled Sussex and White Sussex. Very docile and gentle. Might be useful for smaller areas or for people with children or older people who no longer want big birds (like us!).
Sounds like you picked an amazing breed of chicken that fits your family, your region, and your space just right! I appreciate you sharing your insights about your chosen chicken breed so we can all learn from your experiences. Wishing you and your flock lots of joy! Thank you for being here on the channel and for all of your efforts providing excellent care to your flock.
Ive heard buff orphingtins are a pretty good all around chickens for egg laying and being around kids. Is that true?
From my lived experience I would have to say that is very true. My buff orpington girls are not only excellent layers but very docile and sweet chickens. They are a wonderful beginner friendly breed with a great temperament.
We've had some nice Buff Orpington as well as the Australorp, and they both have been docile. The Orpingtons are the best of those two.
Thank you I learned a lot of new information. Is there a reason why my brown eggs are getting lighter in color? The yoke is still bright dark yellow but the outside looks lighter to me
Thank you for your question! There are several possible reasons the shell pigment from your hens might change from time to time. Reasons the pigment may change include things like: molting, aging, stress, medications, or illness. Changes in their nutrition and in their environment can also impact shell pigmentation. Chickens can become stressed by environmental factors like loud noises, interruptions during their laying activities, overcrowding, or harsh temperature changes. Although you can expect a typical color range for your brown eggs it has been my lived experience that not every egg will be exactly the same even from the same hen; there are always little nuances even when there is no issue. As long as you're not observing any other symptoms within your flock I don't think it is a cause for concern. As long as the shells are nice and strong, some color variation is to be expected throughout the life of your chickens. I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have any additional questions and thank you for taking great care of your flock!
@ thank you I was worried🙄
Don't use diamateous earth as it will cause respiratory issues, instead use First Saturday Lime, way better for your flock
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I appreciate you sharing what has worked best for you with your flock. There are pros and cons to both lime and DE (food grade diatomaceous earth) and it's important to do appropriate research before using either. I use DE not by itself by as part of mixture in my chicken bath which includes clean fill dirt and clean wood ash from non-treated wood as well as washed course construction sand. I concur it should not be used by itself. I haven't worked with First Saturday lime before, so you've brought something new to my attention! Thank you for giving me a new research topic. I may even do a video about this at some point because it is very interesting to compare the two. I appreciate you and thank you for being here on the channel!
All excellent informative but not adding diatomaceous earth to dust baths. Diatomaceous earth of any grades is not safe for them, the dust particles act like shards of glass to their lungs, especially as they are dust, bathing, and kicking it up, or simply scratching around… those dust particles damage their lungs which damages the respiratory system. Also, those dust particles can cause scratches to their eyes, ultimately causing possible blindness or eye infections.. only add wood ash or nesting herbs never DE.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Food grade diatomaceous earth is a very common chicken bath addition within my backyard chicken community and both lime and DE have pros and cons to them, it is important to choose what is best for your flock and your situation. I'm going to do additional research and create a video comparing the two at some point because I would like to know not only for myself but to share with the community what I find out. I am always willing to be wrong, to learn, and to improve my own practices to become the best chicken keeper I can and that includes listening to different suggestions. Thank you for the research topic, I look forward to sharing what I find out!
Great video but turn Down the music. Plz

I've watched a lot of different chicken videos and channels. You are the first to mention the preening oil gland and what it is for. Thank you!
I'm very glad you found the video informative! I try to strike a balance between information for absolute beginners who are new to the channel and information for my long term subscribers. I thought that was a cool fact about the preening oil gland and I thought it would be interesting to include in the video. Thank you for being here on the channel!
Hello Siera, my coop use to be a trailer. I love hearing about the chickens. The information is very familiar but I love the refresher. Thank you Hope your Halloween was enjoyable. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓

Hello Siera, I have to clean my coop and get it ready for winter. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Me too! I have done several cleans already to get my flock ready for the cold times ahead. I hope the good weather I'm enjoying will hold on just a little longer so I can do another deep clean before snow arrives. Thank you for your comments and your support! Wishing you and your flock a lovely day full of joy.
Anything above-10 f is good don't burn your coop down with a heat light
Yes thank you! Heat lamps are a very real fire hazard. I use supplemental heat because I have ornamental and elderly chickens. I have had a very positive experience using wall mounted panel heaters. Thank you for reaffirming this important information.
Where is the best place to pet or touch your chickens to show affection.? I sit & hand feed my girls every day, while sitting on a low stool. They’re fine with that but they do not like me trying to hold them or pet them. At night when they are on their roost I tell them good night with a soft touch pet from their neck to tail but they all turn their back to me. Am I doing something wrong?
No worries! Building trust with your flock takes time and it sounds like you are already able to hand feed and touch them so that is great! Every chicken and every flock is going to be different so always use your best judgement. Here are some tips that have worked with my hens. I do my best to stay still and let them come to me when possible. When petting them I pet their chest. Most of my flock doesn't enjoy being picked up, I only have a few hens that enjoy being handled in this way. Patience and consistency are the most important parts of chicken training. Some breeds and some chickens may take more time than others but with consistent gentle handling I have no doubt you will raise a tame and calm flock.
@ thank you so much for your advice
Hello Sierra, so true some are not friendly. I actually had a dog that just would not let you rub his tummy. He had a very strong will. So true Patients is the key. your very wise and good at sharing your information. thank you so much for sharing. I like to sit with the chickens and I really love feeding them from my hand. Yes some like to bite when getting their treat. some are very gentle. I have hens with feathers on their feet too. Your white hen has a lot on her feet. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thank you for your kind words and support. Sitting and watching my flock is truly a peaceful and joyful moment of my day. Yes it's true some hens are more gentle eaters than others while some pinch fingers on accident. Animals do have a mind of their own, some are more receptive to taming and training than others. The white chicken is Macaroon, he's a little lavender bantam with big white boots. Thank you again for your kind comments and for being here on the channel.
Having a backyard flock has been such a joy in my life! The eggs are a bonus. I have a hen that will hop on my lap while i'm sitting on my porch swing and it just wants to be pet.
It is just day after day of awesome, isn't it? Thank you for your comment and for being here on the channel.
Thank you so much! First winter with my babies and I want to do it right
The fact that you are preparing and doing research lets me know your flock is in good hands. Preparation is the key to a safe and happy winter with chickens. If you haven't already, be sure to acquire at least one beginner chicken care guidebook as well. These contain a lot of valuable information and even years into my chicken journey I still refer to mine all the time. Thank you for being here on the channel and for investing time into providing your flock with excellent care!
Corn is a hot grain and can help warm them up when used in moderation
Very true, a little cracked corn before roosting helps the flock stay warm. Yes, you are also right that it should be fed in moderation as to not accidentally cause a nutritional imbalance. For my flock I feed treats 3 times per week. Thank you for being here on the channel!
Do you have a chicken that is sillier than the rest? Theres alsways one excentric chicken in the flock
They're all pretty amazing and bring me joy in different ways. The silly award would probably have to go to Cynthia, my buff laced polish. She is extremely affectionate and will leap after you if she thinks you aren't paying her enough attention. They are all a joy in different ways. Who is the silly bird in your flock? Thank you for being here on the channel!

What breed are the blackish one at 6:27?
Thank you for your question. Those are my Dominique chickens. They are a dual purpose chicken with cuckoo coloring that is black and white. They are wonderful layers and have great personalities. Their rose comb makes them well suited for cold winters.
Another awesome video thankyou for all your advice, keep them coming ❤

For emergency cold drops, fill up plastic jugs with hot water, screw on top and place in enclosed coop area. It will raise the temperature several degrees in an enclosed space.
Thank you for sharing your information from your lived experience keeping chickens warm in cold temperatures. The more information we share the more we can learn and grow together!
I use a water filled bottle method…I reuse …simply lemonade… bottles. I create a wall of bottles placed around coop /run structure like a fence border. This seems to help insulate the coop from the outside & chickens are in zero danger from bottles and no poop gets drenched on them either, as they are placed on the outside of structure. It provides some wind protection too.
great idea. I was also thinking of rocks from the top of our wood stove, not too hot, not hot enough to burn.
A few years ago we had two weeks of subzero temps. My hen house was untreated. But, packed with hens and one rooster. The tips on his comb were frost bit or frozen. The tips turned black and feel off. He has a nice smooth comb up there now. I keep him because he has never bowed up on me.
That is very true, chickens share body heat to keep warm. If you had a large flock they no doubt helped each other by huddling close in the cold temperatures. I'm glad to hear you value your tame rooster. A gentleman rooster is a wonderful addition to a flock. Thank you for being here on the channel.
Greetings from Northern Indiana! Thank for this very helpful video! New subscriber as of today. Please keep them coming! I'm also a 1st time chicken owner of a small flock and they are only 5 months old. I appreciate you making this video, Thank you!

Your chickens look very well cared for
Thank you for noticing! I really enjoy caring for my flock. I know the energy I devote to caring for them is always reciprocated.
Thank you for a great video. I’m now into 7th month for owning chickens for the first time. It has been a wonderful experience & I enjoy so much just sitting with them & listening to sounds that they make. When the world gets too much I head to my chickens for a relaxing break. Does canned corn (since fresh is no longer available) have more nutritious than a bag crackle corn for treats?
@@Crusher14 Thank you for your question! I too find immense peace and joy watching and tending to my flock. To my knowledge, the nutritional value of cracked corn and canned corn would be approximately the same. If anyone out there sees this and knows better please share your resources but I have fed both and not noticed a significant difference nutritionally speaking. Canned corn is softer and is easier for my elderly hens to eat. Thank you for being on the channel!
Is there a certian food for roosters?
Thank you for your question. If your roosters are incorporated into your flock with your hens, it is perfectly fine for them eat and enjoy whatever brand of complete chicken feed you provide for your flock. If your roosters are kept separately in their own enclosure, like a bachelor pad for example, you can provide them with all flock or maintenance style feed because they don't necessarily need the levels of calcium present in layer feed.
Thankyou ❤️
Thank you for such an informative video. I am enjoying a small flock in my retirement years. I was deeply touched by your testimony of gratitude. Each time I have a dozen eggs to share, or have a wonderful egg for breakfast, I am moved by the gracious hand of our Creator that made us, and made chickens to bless our lives. I'm learning as I go. Thanks again!
I'm very happy you're enjoying the channel. My small flock has also transformed my life in more positive and wonderful ways than I can mention. Through caring for them and learning about their needs I have truly grown as a person. Additionally they take such amazing, good care of our family in return. Our flock is the heart of our homestead. Chickens truly are a blessing and deserving of our care and compassion. Thank you for your comment!

Are pine shavings typically a place where predators like snakes are common as you said straw can be?
Any ground cover litter if it is not properly maintained and changed in a timely manner can become home to unwanted pests and predators. On our homestead I use deep bedding method so the whole bedding pack is removed in entirety in the spring season and moved to the compost to process before going to the garden. Even if you are using spot clean and scoop bedding method, the litter material, whichever kind you have chosen, should be changed in entirety at minimum annually to keep harmful bacteria, pests, and predators from lingering in the litter from season to season. I maintain my coop and run daily and seasonally deep clean my chicken area. I replace all of my ground cover litter annually. With this maintenance schedule I haven't experienced any predators forming nests in the pine shavings. I also deter pests by stacking multiple pest and predator prevention methods. If you haven't already seen it, here is my predator video where I talk about all the ways I know how to keep predators out of your chicken area. How about keeping water from not freezing for them girls
Thank you for your question. If it is at all feasible, I highly recommend investing in a heated livestock bowl. There are many designs to choose from. While there are ways to prevent water from freezing during the winter without electricity, none of them are as reliable or maintenance-free as a heated livestock bowl. If that isn't practical for your situation, you can try using a sturdy black rubber livestock dish inside of an un-used tire with no rim placed in a sunny area. The tire can be lined with pool noodles or spray foam and ping pong balls can be placed on the surface of the water to help break up surface tension and prevents ice from forming longer. Regardless, any electric-free solution will need to be checked multiple times daily to ensure it hasn't frozen. Fresh water is a very important part of maintaining your chicken's health. In severe temperatures, even the most creative electric free solutions will be tested. In my lived experience the heated livestock bowl is the way to go if at all possible.
would you say southern Texans wouldn't need to worry about extreme cold for chickens? we rarely have long freezing temps
In order to know whether or not your region experiences harsh winter temperatures, I encourage you to explore what grow zone, or plant hardiness zone, you are in. Your grow zone will not only indicate what garden plants thrive in your area but it will also give you a good idea of seasonal norms and extremes. While your region may be typically mild, many areas are subject to occasional extreme storms and weather patterns. It never hurts to be ready with an extra tarp or a few spare bales of straw, just in case. I have an entire playlist dedicated to everything I know about winter chicken care and what has worked for me in my region. The emergency care tips video is one I made when many southern regions were suddenly subject to an unexpected winter storm. Being weather aware is also another great way to care for your flock. If you are expecting unusual winter weather in your area, prevention can make all the difference when it comes to protecting and caring for your flock. So, even if extreme winter temps are not the norm for your region it never hurts to know what to do in the event you are faced with unexpected winter weather. Here is that playlist, I hope you will find it helpful. Thank you for your question! Winter Care Tips ua-cam.com/play/PLchMJnb8LlPqzlYqo4N_tC-C_QshDJ_96.html
