      Thank you for watching! By sewing on the back you can stitch closer to the edge of the hem and no you are catching it. If sewing from the front, you may not catch it or the hem can fold back.

    Great instructions and visuals are excellent! Thank you SO much. I feel like I CAN do this. I have sewn since I was about 8 years old but have only made pillow covers with a flap type closure on wrong side. Also do not love to install zippers, not sure why, they are not THAT hard. Would you use the same size cord for a 20 x 20 inch sofa pillow? Thinking to bias fabric width would need to be cut a bit wider if cord was much bigger

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 18 днів тому

      I use the same size cording for most of my pillow sizes. On larger Euro bed pillows-26" to 30"- I will go up to a larger cording, especially if I want to make a statement. :) If you go with a larger size, the bias strip size will change. I will cut a tester fabric strip and make about a 6"-9" cording tester piece to make sure the size is correct before cutting the fabric to be used for a project. Thank you for watching the video! Happy Sewing!

    Before zipper install, I know you marked off 3.5 inches from both edges But in video it looks like zipper is installed to start and finish into that 3.5 inches ? Please advise. Thank you! And is that piece the 4" x 25" ?

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 24 дні тому

      You will need to sew the bottom and top fabric pieces together, 3.5" from both sides and then install the zipper starting at about 3" from each side so it will be at least .5" from the opening. The zipper is longer so we do not have to sew near the pull but it is not sewn from end to end. You will see after it is sewn to each side, the excess its cut off. Hope this clarifies. :)

    For those of us who are "voluptuous" ladies, the 21" width might not be wide enough. I'm extending mine to 28" so the sides where my pens/pencils are fall on the sides rather than in front. Also, for those of us who are newbies, she mentions at 15:43 that you will need a larger needle -- a 14 or even a 16, to sew through the heavy layers.

    For us new sewists, it would've been helpful to define "home dec" (which I thought was "home deck," as in outdoor furniture fabric). Luckily Joann's website has an entire "home dec" section that lists cotton duck, canvas, etc. so I know what type of material to get for my apron (I got cotton duck) and whether it will need stabilizer (according to the video, it doesn't).

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 27 днів тому

      Thank you for the elaboration on what home dec is. There are many weights of home decorator fabrics, but most will not require an additional stabilizer.

    This by far the best piping and zipper install video I have watched (and I have watched a LOT of them!). Your trick to match up the piping on the bias is brilliant! Your zipper technique for matching up the ends also brilliant I have not seen those done and I’ve always wondered how to make sure both sides of the zipper are matched up .. now I know. Thank you for this video and kudos to your camera person. They did a stellar job! I finally feel ready to install an invisible zipper and piping.

    One more question. I'm re-watching the video so that I'm figuring out my fabric and lining length & width properly. At around 2 min's you start talking about the upper hem with the tabs. It appears the 1/2 inch at the top might have gotten added twice? My curtains are going to be inset, so I want to make sure I'm figuring out my measurements correctly.

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 2 місяці тому

      The 1/2" at the top just gives added assurance that the rod won't show. So when calculating your cut size you have your front measurements and then the back measurements (which is your hem and header). On the front you have your finished height plus the 1/2" above rod for assurance. On the back you have the 1/2" + rod pocket size for the tabs and then you double that because the fabric goes back to the top to give structure to the top of your panel. On the liner it just goes to the top not folded over. On the back you also have the hem amount which if you have a 3" hem, you add 6". The 1/2" is actually added 3 times because you have it on the front, back, and then folded back inside to the top. Hope this clarifies. :) Good luck!

    I've found a cotton quilt fabric I like and fits the decor of the room that I plan to make curtains for. Would you wash & dry the fabric prior to making the curtains? Also, what liner did you use?

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 2 місяці тому

      If you plan on washing the curtains regularly, then yes prewash. Because you are using quilt weight cotton which is a lighter weight than home dec., use a heavier drapery liner than what I used in the video. Go with more of the cotton sateen mid weight liner.

    Are you referring to the bottom as the hip? And you got 28 for the waist but said 14 for the "hip". Should it be 15? If it's 28/2=14 the add 1??? I'm more confused now than ever. Also what is the steps 4 and 5 for? Why is it halfed yet again?

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 3 місяці тому

      Sorry for any confusion. The worksheet is intended to go in order with the steps. So on the left of the worksheet you will see an example using specific measurements different than what was in the video. In the video- 21 was the waist, 28 was the fullest part of hip (which we call bottom). Following the worksheet you need to get your waist, hip and desired length(dl). Next determine how full you want this skirt. We used a multiplier of 1.5 for 1.5 fullness. Step 1- take your waist (top of skirt) and multiply it by your fullness multiplier. Then divide it by 2 because you will have a front piece and a back piece. Then add 1" to that measurement for seam allowance. Now you have your top number. Step 2- Take your fullest hip measurement and multiply it by your fullness multiplier. Then divide by 2 and add 1". Now that will be your bottom number. Step 3- Determine you desired length and add 1". Step 4- We will be working from the fold of your fabric so the left and right side are identical. Because of that when you fold your front piece fabric in half to mark from- you will need to take your number you ended up with in Step 1 and divide by 2 because we are working with half the fabric. The same with Step 5- you will need to take the final number from Step 2 and divide by 2. Get your numbers and then follow along with the video one step at a time. If you are still confused, you can always email me at sara.claxton@beyondfabricinc.com or call the store (912) 673-8662 and I can try a different approach to walk you through it. :)

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 3 місяці тому

    Found your channel looking for a skirt with pockets tutorial. Very clear and easy to follow instructions. I appreciate that you let us see how the skirt falls/flows with two different fabrics. Thanks. Just subscribed.

    I want to make these for Hospice. It’s almost reminds me of a fidget blanket.

      It could be easily modified to be a fidget blanket! Just make it more lap size and it would be perfect for hospice. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing.

    How do you use it as a cold pack

    • @BeyondFabric
      @BeyondFabric 3 місяці тому

      You can put it in the freezer and the rice stays cold for awhile. We did a separate video where you can laminate your cotton fabric for the cold packs: studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoxH5HUkfvw5s/edit

    Looks great. I used a great Liberty cotton that was on special at my local store. Very happy with the result and liked the extra flannel lining
