Much talk about wanting to grow subs and revenue. Get rid of the cans and do the show in a room prepared for presentation. I’ve never seen such a contrast between obvious talent and knowledge and lack of production. I mean we can see your jizz rags over there
Very nice reading - expressive, but not quite *performing* the chapters, which would be tiresome (to me).
You need to rethink your approach to your channel’s announcement. When you lead with what you seem to choose as your featured question, that them needs to be what is answered first, or explained quickly, otherwise you are disappointing and confusing those who are following your title. If you are thinking that this makes for a waiting audience, you are mistaken and are simple encouraging disappointment.
Please forgive the typo!
“Then they”, not “them”.
There's chapters, you can skip to whatever you want in the video. I'll stick to what has been working wonderfully.
“Can’t do good by evil means” becomes muddier in Beregond’s case
No it really doesn't. Beregond didn't do anything evil.
@ do you think killing his own kin to save his leader doesn’t have a little evil in the deed itself or does the noble intention overrule that?
Is it possible for a Dwarf to procreate with a Man or an Elf? 🤔
Not tested, but almost certainly impossible. The dwarves are sort of homonculi - human shaped beings created by someone who didn't have the blueprints. i'm sure there were a few dwarves who would have liked to give it a try, but as they are not Children of Ilúvatar save by "adoption" they're not really the same species.
@ Gracias Juan!
Thank you for that Tom Bombadil explanation. Reading the silmarillion now (at the beginning of days) and wondered if he was one of the other spirits that went, not nessisarily classified as anuir.
I've always seen him as a creation of The Secret Fire, a spirit of specifically Middle-Earth. Absolutely not an Ainu, but something "different" enough to be strange and unusual.
I would enjoy a reading from Tolkien's Beowulf.
I don't have a physical copy but I can still do it if that's not a big deal.
I have to be honest, Fenor seems like he would have needed more than ten thousand years in Mandos to chill enough for this kind of chat with Gimli. Perhaps by the Sixth Age he or something he might start to question his life choices.
Seeing as how Gimli would be in Mandos until the end as well, they would have literally all the time in the world.
@John-Sierra Of course, I just think even now Fenor - and sorry about the accents I'm typing on my braille keyboard and haven't figured those out - would still be nursing his pride. Give it a few hundred thousands years and he'd come around haha.
Given that Rohan was very much a patriarchal society, why did Helm Hammerhand's sister-son Fréaláf go by his mother's name for his surname (Hildeson; literally, "Son of Hild")? Chris Smith's 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Official Visual Companion (2024; HarperCollins) gives one explanation, but it is definitely not canonical: "Fréaláf Hildeson is the son of Hild, Helm Hammerhand's sister. Little is known about his father, though it is suggested he may not have been one of the Rohirrim, but rather a Gondorian prince from the city of Dol Amroth to Rohan's South." I would not say that Australia was ever a part of Middle-earth. Rather, it might have been a remnant of the continent known as Dark Land, to the south-east of Middle-earth.
Hildeson makes sense when we see that Hilde's husband's name was never recorded. Rohan is actually a bit less Patriarchal than Gondor, they never would have let Hild's son becoming King as he was descended from Gram only through the female line - Rohan was less fussed about that sort of thing. Keep in mind they also were happy to have Éowyn as Queen in the case that both Théoden and Éomer never made it back. Anyway, Hildeson is a way of showing that he is of the royal line, while his father (whatever his name may have been) was not a royal, just married to one.
@@John-Sierra You make an interesting point about Éowyn, though it is a bit subverted when we remember that Helm's daughter did not succeed him as the next ruler of Rohan. On the other hand, we also never learn her fate. Maybe (outside of the upcoming anime) she did not survive the war with the Dunlendings.
That guitar intro is fire btw
That's Kevin MacLeod, you should give him a look, he does royalty free music in just about any genre you can think of.
Would you say Gil-galad did most of the work in the dual against Sauron? I don't really see how any mortal no matter how mighty, even Hurin Turin or Tuor could feasibly stand up to a Maiar, especially not one as powerful as Sauron and once again especially since he had the ring. Even Gandalf the white, re-embodied Glorfindel or Galadriel would not be able to stand up to him even without the ring after some of his power was diminished. However, I can see how a High-King of the Noldor like Gil-galad could feasibly stand up to Sauron even if he is the underdog going into the dual. I also can't help but think that Gil-galad is the one exception of the diminishment theme as he is incredibly powerful and seems no less powerful than Fingon or Finrod. I find it weird that he's the son of Orodreth who didn't seem very powerful at all compared to most other elf lords of the time and was most certainly an idiot, and there is his son who is one of the most wise, intelligent and powerful elf lords to ever exist. Gil-galad as far as I can tell never saw the two trees and is pretty far down the family tree relative to the other really powerful elf lords. I actually like this as it paints Gil-galad as a bit of an underdog and despite diminishment in most things, somehow just somehow he is able to achieve greatness and power as if he was further up the family tree. And while it can seem inconsistent with Tolkiens theme of diminishment, I actually like that he leaves room for exceptions such as what it seems for Gil-galad But back to the main point, I envision the dual as it mostly being Sauron vs Gil-galad and Elendil mostly hiding behind Gil-galad and sometimes swinging Narsil at Sauron and occasionally providing as a distraction but mostly Gil-galad vs Sauron as it doesn't really seem feasible that a mortal could stand up to Sauron and last longer than a couple of seconds, let alone emerge with a mutual defeat. Another thing about this is as you said Elendil is diminished from Elros who is Elrond's brother, and from I can see Gil-galad is a few tiers above Elrond, and I know this is a very simplistic analysis when it comes to power ranking but I still think that it's a good reason to believe Gil-galad did most of the work. I'm not sure what your thoughts are about this but it's what I think
Diminishment is real, but Gil-galad was the high-king for a very long time. It's not that he gets diminished, it's that successive generations of elves get diminished, he's just of an older stock. You're seriously underestimating Elendil though. Sauron was recently battered around by the Akallabêth and was not at his best. You can't really use third age characters to compare to him, because they don't make them like Elendil anymore, it's been 30 generations (and 30 generations by the standard of those that live far longer). I recommend you don't get too caught up in power levels, it takes the fun and the magic out of it, but the reality is that Elendil was just that mighty, every bit an equal of Gil-galad in battle. Gandalf doesn't go up against Sauron because he's forbidden to do this
Another point to add to John’s paragraph is that the fight happened after years of Mordor being under siege, I really think that Sauron was also tired and spent after years of mentally willing his forces on in battle. But I totally understand your question, as it has also been on my mind for years. I imagine the fight as all of them killing and maiming each other and then Isildur doing the Fatality at the end when the battle was over.
Will Morgoth come back?
Probably not. Tolkien had the idea or a second prophecy of Námo (Mandos) referring to Dagor Dagorath - The Final Battle. Morgoth returns and battles Eärendil in the sky, and then Tulkas, Eönwë and Túrin on the land. He is slain by Túrin and utterly annihilated, the world ends (as it has to) and is rebuilt in a Second Music, with Túrin becoming one of the Valar and all the voices of elves and men joining the angels in their chorus. However, he later abandoned the concept, and the prophecy was later attributed to Andreth (a mortal woman) who stated Túrin would return during the War of Wrath and battle Ancalagon, though this also did not happen, Eärendil and the Eagles of Manwë fought and killed the dragon. So, it seems that Tolkien's final thoughts on the matter was that Morgoth was gone from the world, though his evil still persisted in the world itself (Morgoth's Ring).
That whole scenario of Gimli and Feanor in the Halls of Mandos was awesome. He also would def brag a bit about his 3 hairs heirloom 🤣
I don't think it in Gimli's personality to brag in this way....unless Galadriel asked him to. Which she totally would!
I learn so much from these discussions. Thank you gentlemen ✌️
Glad you're enjoying the discussion!
@@John-SierraI’m really curious about Luthien. Have you answered many questions about her ? I can’t seem to find very much discussion about her place in Tolkiens great story.
Did you say that Simone de Beauvoir convinced Tolkien not to rewrite the Hobbit? That seems rather unlikely.
A lot of things seem unlikely.
@@John-Sierra Indeed. I suspect either I misheard or you were testing whether people are paying attention. However, if none of that is correct, I would love a source.
I have a question regarding one thing Kemp mentioned about the elves not living in Valinor per se but in Tol Erresea, but apart from the Teleri that lived in the coasts, do any other elves live near the Valar? (Didn’t the Vanyar live close by?) Did the elves have any restrictions in those lands?
The elves have their own country called Eldamar, but they are free to visit Valinor or even live there if they may. They made Eldamar as a way to be their own people - they had their own kingdoms and societies in Middle-Earth, and migrating to Aman doesn't necessarily remove all of that. As the Valar let the Falmari live in Valinor, they don't seem to make restrictions on where the elves live - if anything Ingwë (King of all elves) would be the one they ask permission from.
Thanks for the good discussion gentleman. Some feedback if I may. The timers are a nice idea to keep things on track but it would be better to use them as a general guide rather than stopping mid sentence. An extra 30-60 seconds won’t hurt in a 2hr conversation
I thought the same, couple of times they were on to good points and should have had a bit more time to conclude the thoughts
In the case of being strict with the timers, I do this only because Sid has somewhere to be afterwards.
Good stuff again guys. I’d like to recommend the next reading for the next video! I’m going thru Unfinished Tales for the first time and I thought the dialogue between Morgoth and Hurin defying him was amazing and badass
Readings aren't always a thing in the council meetings, though we could make them a regular thing if you really like them. In my question/answer videos (weekly) I always start with a reading. I don't remember the exact episode number, but I have used that scene from The Children of Húrin in the past, as it is also one of my favorite parts.
I liked this council session, tech issues aside. These were all great topics and were well discussed. Thanks for your time gentleman.
Thanks! It's tough to get everyone together, glad you enjoyed it!
Regarding how Orcs are animated and given life (or the facsimile of it,) I wonder if it might have to do with Morgoth’s ring. Since Morgoth poured his essence into the earth at the loss of much of his own power, maybe he recycled some of that essence to animate the Orcs, and maybe even dragons like Glaurung (who does in fact ‘channel’ Morgoth, for lack of a better word, at one point.) If the amount of Morgoth invested in the Orc population never increased, and only got divided more and more as the Orcs reproduced, maybe that’s why many of them started wandering around like broken toys or throwing themselves on their blades once Sauron was no longer there to give them direction. Morgoth’s soul was diluted that much. Off topic, after learning that elves spend decades as a teenager, I understand why Elros chose to become human.
I like the idea, though I think when Sauron's power broke, it wasn't so much that they were broken toys with no direction, but that they suddenly realized they were losing and freaked out. A lot of times the villains put some crazy thoughts into their foot soldiers heads, such as Saruman telling the Dunlendings that the men of Rohan were cruel and would torment them. They were honestly surprised to find that wasn't true! In the case of Orcs, no one really suffers their lives.
Not sure why but the passage about Saruman being turned away is one of my favorite parts of Return of the King. You almost feel bad for him. I wonder what his thoughts are at the time. Does he not understand why Manwë would do such a thing and feels confused? Or does he feel anger. I like the subtle difference between him and Sauron too. Sauron even in his defeat tries to attack Gandalf and company and likely is not even thinking about trying to return West, but Saruman wants to go home.
I think that Saruman is that guy saying "but I did everything right!". In the end though, he acted out of sheer malice, to make himself feel better. I think he had to have some understanding of his own wrongdoing. Perhaps he thought Manwë was not wathcing.
I chuckled out loud to "linguistics from linguine" 😂😂
The barrow whites were likely victims of morgel knife wounds.
This may be true, but I think if it were, they would not be hanging around in their Barrows, but rather following the Witch King around like lost puppies. It could be that they returned to their barrows after he was driven out of Angmar, not having the strength to get to Mordor, but he was in the neighborhood again. While they are certainly victims of Necromancy, I think that they may be more akin to the old norse Draugr.
I don't know why, but I burst out in laughter on the "blip on the radar" comment
My headcanon about Tom Bombadil is that he is Melkor. Or rather Melkor as he should have been. “For nothing is evil in the beginning" wrote Tolkien. He also wrote that Melkor once loved Varda (but ended up hating her). I theorise that once Melkor descended on Arda, he purged all goodness from himself, as he saw goodness as a weakness, and that goodness manifested itself into Tom, a powerful and purely good being, and probably the only powerful being in Arda that never used any form of violent conduct (The Valar did almost destroy Middle Earth during their first war with Melkor). Strengthening my theory is the fact that we've seen both Melkor and Sauron separating part of themselves (e.g. making of the One ring). Obviously I made all that up, and I'm pretty happy with Tolkien's intention to keep Tom a mystery :)
It's a very cool theory, but the hole is that Bombadil was there before Melkor came from the Outside. I always saw him as something that sprung from The Secret Fire - a spirit of the land itself. He is Middle-Earth, embodied.
I would think that King Earnur would probably have had the Morgul treatment, I don't know why the Witch King wouldn't
This is almost certainly true.
Great vid as usual! Very interesting to hear some of Tolkien’s translations.
Glad you enjoyed it, I'm hoping to dive more into those in readings.
Yeah, the ‘wind’ detail was too deliberate to not have been Manwe’s ultimate intervention. Blowing both Sauron and Saruman’s spirits away seems to have been Tolkien’s way of putting an exclamation point to their ultimate sentence by the Lord of Arda, whose province it was to pass such sentences.
Sir Gawain was an original Welsh hero who was sort of incorporated into the Arthurian legends as the celtic tales were absorbed by the various invaders. If you ever get a chance to read The Book of Arthur, there are some of his original stories in it.
I look forward to this every week. I learn so much watching this channel. Thank you John Sierra. Outstanding 🙏
Same here
Great video especially the explanation of Galadriel being deceived by the One Ring!
Thank you kindly!
I think calling all critics of rings of power chuds is a bit reductive
disagree that Illuvitar would not have created with out Morgoths rebellion, your augments do not convince me
Somehow, I'll survive.
The comment about the ring being switched to a new chain in Rivendell makes me wonder if some Elf servant of Elrond did that without realizing what the ring was only for Elrond and Gandalf to slap them silly upon learning they handled the One Ring. (Not likely but a funny image)
John I’m currently reading Unfinished Tales (after many many Silmarillion readings), which book should I venture into next? Children of Hurin, Beren & L or The Fall of Gondolin?
If you've read both The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, you've essentially read The Children of Húrin, but I still think it's worth reading the compiled version. The others are collections of various versions of the stories more than anything.
What was up with the sapient birds (namely the Thrush and Raven) in the Hobbit? Were they a special breed, or vassals of Manwe like the Eagles, a more covert force maybe?
Originally, The Hobbit stood on its own, with only cheeky little references to the Legendarium, but knowing what we know, Tolkien spoke of animals of a "higher order". The Old thrush and his ilk would fit that bill, and the art of speaking to animals, especially birds, comes up in Unfinished Tales as something but Saruman and Radagast can do, and it seems that either Bard can, or the Thrush can speak Westron.
@ So they’re more akin to the capital A Animals of Narnia? That makes sense, thanks.
Green Knight was always a piece of literature that I loved, up there with The Faerie Queene and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The film was weird and beautiful and I loved it, sort of like the film "Titus," a take on Titus Andronicus with Anthony Hopkins.
I loved the film, it was everything I wanted in a fantasy film.
@@John-SierraGreen knight is outstanding . Iris Is so underrated Man I love this channel.
Dáin *literally* stonewalled the Messenger of Mordor.
Why did fingolfin fight morgoth if morgoth couldn't be killed?
He could not be permanently killed - but he could be defeated - and eventually was by Eönwë. Fingolfin came pretty close, he messed Morgoth up pretty badly, but ran out of stamina. Fingolfin at this point just believed he had no other option.
What gappened to Nazguls and their soul after rhe One Ring's destruction?
They finally died - they were long past their expiration date, after all, so without the necromancy of the rings keeping them in the world, they immediately perished. Like all mortal men, they would go beyond the circles of the world. Beyond that, it's only conjecture, we know there is an afterlife for mortals, but we dont know if it's the same as the heaven/hell thing- though that seems likely coming from Tolkien. As to their final fate, Tolkien would refuse to comment, he would say that is between them and Ilúvatar.
you need to get closer to the camera ???????????
My brother in Arceus, I take up like 60% of the screen - how much closer do you want me to be?
QUESTION: Could Caradhras have been sentient? Reading the chapter, it seems like the mountain was written as a hostile entity not willing to let the fellowship pass.
That was Gimli's thought as to the origin of the storm. It's an open question, but I agree with Gimli - Caradhras was sentient and had an evil will - in other words mountains are alive and this one is a jerk. The fact that Legolas hears the voices of stones from Eregion makes this seem feasable.
@ wow thanks for your reply! You actually brought up other details I forgot. Probably could have answered my own question.
@@John-Sierraisn't Caradras part of a mountain range erected by Morgoth himself to stop the Elves from going from Cuivienen to Aman ? If so, it would make sense for it to be a grumpy lump of evil rocks hell bent on preventing people from crossing.
Is the dragon in "Farmer Giles of Ham" one of Melkors dragons or of some other origin? Is Ham in Middle Eartyh or some other location?
Farmer Giles of Ham is outside the Legendarium and therefore isn't in Middle-Earth in that sense, it takes place in an imaginary Dark Ages Britain (while Middle-Earth would be an imaginary pre-antiquity Europe/Africa/Asia). Chrysophylax Dives is also not really evil, making him unlike any of the dragons of Melkor.
@@John-Sierra Thank you
Good video, and yeah I feel bad for the ent wives though If I may speak on that Link of Wise guy's question as it's one I've also had in the past. I think he may have been more referring to the physical changes caused by the ring if they'd have their lives extended/become wraiths as opposed to whether they'd fall under Sauron's power. Or if becoming greedier is the only effect as it seems they may not have had the rings for as long as others, at least not before Dragons and Sauron got them
You might argue that the dwarves had them much longer than men - who had to turn theirs in to Sauron once they were fully bound to him. Think of it this way, the last one was still held by Thrain until just shortly before the events of The Hobbit.
@@John-Sierra I agree with you I just thought I might explain what that guy might have meant when he asked
I love The Tolkien Reader and those other stories. The Smith of Wootton Major always felt so dark and full of secret meaning.
yes there is no way you can argue that Fëanor did nothing wrong, I cannot believe anyone would claim that
In Swedish "stor" (pronounced with an elongated o-sound) translated into "big" or "large". It can also mean to be an adult, as a child can say "when I become (stor) a grown up". Do you think this is connected to the name of the somewhat larger Hobbit size with same name?
Swedish shares some roots with English, tolkien used the Old English "stor" which had the same meaning, tracing back to Old Norse. So while he wasn't specifically thinking of Swedish, he was using the same root.
Wow I remember playing this when I was in like 7th grade Christmas break. Great memories. Christimas in Puerto Rico is amazing it lasts until mid January as we celebrate 3 Kings and then the San Sebastián festivities.
Is there a reason you skipped from "Battlelore" to "Frodos mithril shirt" section?
Also missed the very bottom item of the iceberg about the comics
I have a question, does Glamdring glow pearly white?
It would have glowed blue - as certain Gondolin weapons would in the presence of Orcs. The Hobbit is not very specific, stating that Glamdring glowed "in its own light" but also did use "blue flame" as an example, though it was "as bright as blue flame" not "blue, like a flame". The Lord of the Rings is more specific, but for Sting - but it's reasonable to say that both Glamdring and Orcrist would glow blue.
