Yarn for Weaving - Focus on Cotton - Size Matters
Viewers and others have stated they aren't sure what the numbers mean for weaving yarn and how to determine the correct ends per inch. In this recording I discuss this issue using both rigid heddles and metal heddles used with multi shaft looms.
When I talk about the yarn the focus of this recording is on cotton, cotton blends, and rayon yarn. Wool, linen and silk use different measuring systems and the ends per inch epi will be different.
This is one explanation. I hope it helps.

This is part 2 of Weaving Coasters - pattern link below In this recording I continue to demonstrate 3 more weave structures and more ideas to help you with your project. You will also see the finished mug mats. I did weave 10 total and this warp was sett at 8EPI. This makes for a quicker threading and a good learning experience. For a more balanced weave I suggested using 10 EPI. The yarn is si...

Are you new to weaving on a 4 shaft loom? Would you like to learn how to weave twill patterns? This recording is a good introduction since it uses thick yarn and a short/narrow warp. The yarn is similar to Peaches and Creme, Lily Sugar and Cream, and others. Two patterns are available for purchase. One the yarn is sett at 8EPI the other pattern is sett at 10EPI These are in the shop at this lin...
Weaving Coasters on a RH loom with Hand Spun Yarn

If you have been spinning your yarn and have a rigid heddle loom this project might be of interest to you. It can be a quick and useful. Perhaps gift giving. The hand-spun yarn I used was a little stick but it worked. I used an 8 dent reed. The warp was 6 inches wide and 2 1/2 yards long. I was able to weave 9 coasters, hemstitched with a short fringe. www.opalessencefiberstudio.com/ www.etsy.c...

Old Warp New Life

After literally hanging around the studio for several years, this warp finally made it to a loom. These are not my favorite colors. It is rug warp or 8/4 cotton. I was going to weave towels, but decided to weave some sort of warp faced placemats. I sett the yarn at 24 epi and put 4 strands of 8/2 cotton together and wound bobbins for the weft. If you are looking for a quick weave this might be ...
Tie Dyed Warp - Weaving One Section
Переглядів 1983 місяці тому
Sometimes an idea pops into my head and I need to test it. I used 5/2 unmercerized cotton to make a warp and then dyed it 4 different colors. This time I purposed left the ties in to give a bit of an Ikat look. These were fun and fast to weave and they are so soft. www.opalessencefiberstudio.com/ www.etsy.com/shop/maverickson ua-cam.com/users/MargeryErickson Opalessence.Studio/
Blooper 10 - Watch the Whole Back beam When Beaming
Переглядів 2983 місяці тому
Sometimes I am over confident and excited to wind on a new warp. This time I picked a roll of paper that was a bit shorter than I should have used. It would have worked if I had watched what I was doing the whole time. Luckily I was able to weave half the warp before I caught the problem. I just happen to be looking at the loom from the side and saw this. You can watch what I did to fix it.

Rigid Heddle Weaving with Hand Spun Yarn - A few Bloopers

I actually did two live talks on FB in WAFA using this warp and weave. I recorded some sections and put them together in this short recording. I learned a few lessons. 1) Test the twist and strength for the warp - the darker yarn broke twice while weaving 2) Use the same size yarn - The thinner yarn shrunk more and cause wavy areas. 3) OR use a variable dent reed and adjust dents to match the y...

That did help, thank you so very much!
Is a 3/2 the same thickness for any materials? Is 3/2 cotton the same thickness as 3/2 wool or 3/2 linen? I'm curious about that tool to measure it. I am pretty sure the different materials have different weights and therefore a lb of each of them will be different yardages.
Thanks for asking . For this recording I was focusing on Cotton, cotton blends and rayon type yarn. Other fibers do use different measuring for size and yardage does differ. I will add this to the description to clarify.
Thank you!

Thank you Margery for the reminder of the conversation chart.
Of course. I try to keep one near by
I am a little confused with the tie up in Anne Dixon’s book the Handweaver’s Pattern Directory page 168. The tie up looks like it is for 8 shafts not 4, is it possible to do this on 4? Thank you so much!
All the threading and patterns in the Handweaver’s Pattern Book are for 4 shaft looms. What can be confusing is the treadle tie up sections. Most 4 shaft floor looms have 6 treadles, not 8. Most of the patterns can be woven without 8 treadles. For example the first pattern on page 168 uses only 4 treadles. Match the numbers in the pink boxes to the black squares that show what to tie up. I hope this helps.
Hi Margery, I'm so very glad to have found your videos - clear and thorough without being cluttered with waffle and - best of all - without background music! (I can neither hear nor listen properly with music getting in the way). I have just taken the leap from my much loved rigid heddle to a Schacht Mighty Wolf, and it's proving to be a big leap ;~) So thank you for your great videos. Jules, Isle of Tiree, Scotland
Thank you. Glad my format works for you.
Your so fabulous 👌
Thanks.
*threads with one hand, no hook tool, like a boss* Thank you for this explanation and tips. Metal heddles seem to slide so easily compared to texsolvs.
Thank you. Yes metal heddles do slide better most of the time. Some older wire ones can be troublesome.
When you unroll these long warps do you warp with one color or several different colors? Some of the towels looked all purple or all blue or all yellow. They must be weft faced.
Most of my warps are hand dyed. Most towel warps I measure maybe 16 yards and dye four yard sections different colors. Less time threading and it is fun for me to watch the color changes. The weave is mostly tabby, except the patterns they are overshot. I sell patterns too.
Those are very pretty. And that’s the best part of weaving!
Thank you.
Typo - Huck Lace NOT Heck Lace.
How do i read the pattern of swedisch lace
Most weaving patterns are read in the same way. If you are using a 4 shaft loom - You can look at a pattern the threading is across the top this shows how you thread the heddles. There is another section that shows you how to tie up the treadles, on the top to the right. Down the side is how you treadle or if you have a table loom what levers to pull.
What do you call that wood for boobin
The Bobbin is in a wooden Shuttle
Thanks Margery.
You are welcome.
Very informative on what changing up the treadles can do and the pre and post washing.
Glad it was helpful!
Just bought your pattern, have recently acquired a Leclic Nile’s 6 shaft loom. I love your creativity!
Thank you. I have more ideas.
Does your husband sell those shuttles
He makes small ones, not the one I am using in this recording. Hoping he will make this size too. The others are in our shop. maverickson.etsy.com
I have been super lucky! I grew up in NH and always known about Harrisville. In fact, I went to preschool in Harrisville! I lived in Maryland as a young adult, and found a lap loom from Harrisville for 19.99! What a great deal! I also recently (2019 maybe) found a table Harrisville loom probably around $20-$25 at a local discount fabric shop. In 2014 I moved back to NH. I have not gotten to work with them yet. I'm still unpacking from the last move.❤❤❤
Good for you. I hope you get to do some weaving soon.
Hello, how did you tie the nylon cord to the beam? Thank you.

How many double treads do you use on sides? Your sides look so good!
The threads are not doubled at the selvages. It’s magic…:). Actually years of practice and getting to know this loom and how the cotton yarn weaves.

Something quick to weave that looks smashing! Yes. What brand of floor loom and how many shafts? TIA

Hi Margery, yes I thread my reed flat as well. So very much easier to see. Currently threading a 15 dent reed with 8/4 cotton. Thanks so much for all you share!
Sounds great!
Wait now... how does warp change color as you go?
I hand dye the warp. It is so much fun and easier than changing for different colors. I have some finished in my shop. maverickson.etsy.com/
@@MargeryErickson that's awesome!
Too fast to see patterns.
Had to speed it up to get it under a minute. The finished towels are in y shop. maverickson.etsy.com/
Wow! Wow ! Wow! Takes my breath away. How long a warp did you use, and how much time to do all that? Truly beautiful and inspiring! Lovely work. Thanks for sharing.
It was 20 yards, 23 towels, a few weeks to finish. I have several looms I take turns weaving on. Thank you.
Beautiful! All of them.
It's too fast. Shorts don't have the option to slow it down. 😢

How much soda ash do you use per lb of yarn?
Most instructions suggest 1 cup per gallon for dying fabric. I use about 1 cup per 2 gallons of water to soak yarn. I soak cotton and linen blends for 24 hours and massage the yarn to make sure it is all wet. I don't always weigh the yarn...just make sure it is covered with water. I can also reuse the water if I have any left.
Very pretty! 💕🌞🌵😷
Thank you! 🤗

Hello, I am struggling to figure out how to attach the steel warp rod to the loop with nylon thread.

Without seeing the tying on process, I don't understand why you had to cut the finished cloth off the loom. Why couldn't you keep the finished fabric on and still pull the warp and rewind it? 💕🌞🌵😷
Good question. Since the warp slipped off the paper, if I had kept weaving when I reached the problem wind on the tension along the edge of the fabric would have been a problem. It probably be too loose. I could have kept weaving…and deal with it when it happened. Instead I decided to fix it ahead of time.
@@MargeryErickson , but wouldn't it be easier to treat when you got there? I watched your video on broken warp threads and that procedure seems a lot easier. Or instead of cutting your fabric off, couldn't you pull the warp off of the back roller bar (like you showed in this video) adjust those one or two warp threads as you are rolling back onto the back roller bar (like you showed in this video) and pull up any excess thread and weave the ends in later? However, cutting the fabric means I can to start using my fabric sooner, but doesn't cutting also means there is more waste than I calculated? What if my project doesn't allow for waste? How would adjust the couple of warp threads if you didn't have any allowance for a second tie on? 💕🌞🌵😷
I had something like this happen in the past and did not know it happened until I was weaving along and the selvage on the one side was giving me problems. The tension was too tight. It was a mess. This time I decided to be proactive and not take any chances. Yes there was more loom waste. If. you don't have extra yarn you may need to add/tie on yarn to the shorter selvage yarn and then weigh them over the back beam. Looking for a solution is a good idea. There is usually a way. Or you woven project becomes something else. Been there!
@@MargeryErickson , oooooh! Thank you soooo much for your reply... because I was thinking the opposite... that there would be extra warp on that selvage. Now I understand. 💕🌞🌵😷 (For anyone else reading this comment, I watched her video about fixing a broken warp thread and she thoroughly shows and explains this tying on and hanging the warp in the back of the loom that she mentions in the comment above.)
Thanks Margery. Love the bunnies!
Glad you like them!

glad it helped.
I sew bags for christmas presents and now I am weaving the Bands for them.

10 epi and you used a 5 dent reed?
