How to Not Waste a Conference : PP115

In this episode, I want to share how focusing on current challenges and questions, combined with intentional networking can make conferences a valuable experience for strategic ministry.

What you found is the problem with Alan Bibles. They use cheap text blocks and cheap paper and they just put fancy leather on it. I care very much about quality paper and the text because as I’ve gotten older ghosting, makes it very hard for me to read and focus. That’s the only reason I prefer a good quality Bible from say Nelson or humble lamb.

Yeah. I had/have the same text block in a super cheap NLT Thinline. That was one reason I loved the Allan, because I already knew the text block so well. I LOVE my Zondervan premium from their line, and am heavily looking at a Cambridge Pitt Minion for a new smaller carry.

My introduction to in depth Bible study was in the early 2000's when I took several Inductive Bible Study classes in the women's group at church. In the classes, there were weekly videos with Kay Arthur, guiding us through the lesson, then a break (food!), followed by a more casual setting of open discussion. When I first bought the Bible and the printed supplies, I was a bit overwhelmed with the several colors and symbols Ms Arthur used, but after years of study, I have trimmed things down to a personal system that is more compatible for my brain to grasp. I use several colors because they have been the number one tool I have found that calls my attention to the who, what, where when and why of it all. I was always one who underlined and highlighted, though in my pre -structured Bible study classes, I used a ballpoint pen and a yellow highlighter, which bled through terribly. Now there are much better tools (thank you Mr. Pen) as well as Bibles made specifically for marking up. I started using several Composition Notebooks in my late-ish 60's to date (75) and I use them in conjunction with sermon notes. Pastor is right. Start marking up your Bibles! If you're afraid of messing up, go to Walmart and pick up a couple of inexpensive paperback Bibles to use for practice purposes. Just get started somewhere. It's worth it!

I dig the RSV. I think many folks who want more higher level English, but don't want to party with the ESV or CEB crowd are finding a lot of affinity with it. It is the first modern, scholastic informed translation (post-Dead Sea Scrolls), and was (at one time) a highly-regarded translation. I'm cruising over to Amazon to look at that very edition now. Call me intrigued.

In Acts 2:47 salvation is a one-time finished salvation, but in the ESV it is a process. It’s not “saved,” but a continual process of “being saved.” In the ESV’s and Hort’s twisted salvation, at what point does someone actually become “saved” and no longer “being saved”? Notice Acts 2:47 in the KJV, "Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." Then notice Acts 2:47 in the ESV "praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." Notice the same perversion in 1 Corinthians 1:18, "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God." KJV "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." ESV See also 1 Corinthians 15:2, 2 Corinthians 2:15, Colossians 2:10 And the ESV removes the name of “Jesus” 18 times! And it removes “Jesus Christ” 51 times, and the designation “Christ” 39 times, the “Lord” 66 times, and “God” 38 times. The ESV completely removes the following 17 verses: Matthew 12:47 - Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. Matthew 17:21 - Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Matthew 18:11 - For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. Matthew 23:14 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mark 7:16 - If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 9:44 - Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:46 - Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 11:26 - But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Mark 15:28 - 28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. Luke 17:36 - Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Luke 22:44 - And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 23:17 - (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) John 5:4 - For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. Acts 8:37 - And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 15:34 - Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still. Acts 24:7 (note half of Acts 24:6 and 24:8 is also removed) - 7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, Acts 28:29 - And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves. Romans 16:24 - The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

My favorite read of June was Discipline Is Destiny: The Power of Self-Control by Ryan Holiday. And one book I would suggest everyone should read is Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do by Jennifer L. Eberhardt, PhD

Random question. I might have missed it in several videos. I am guessing based on your hat game and wardrobe that you fish. Is this true? Fisher or hunter or both? Seriously though, love your videos and thankful for you!

I pretty much try to live outdoors!!! Plus, living in Louisiana, this is pretty much the uniform for most middle-aged guys around.
