In this episode, work on the 1988 1st Gen Toyota 4runner continues. Getting it one step closer to registration and hitting the beaches and bush tracks. I install a new heater tap and make up some new heater hoses. I take care of a bit of wiring to a couple of temp senders now that I have sourced the correct connectors from the USA ( Thanks YOTASHOP.COM ) I also get the last of the bullbar and b...

More work on the 1st gen Toyota 4runner with a coolant flush, or more accurately a radiator flush as there was no coolant in the cooling system to begin with. But that quickly turns into an epic fail. I also do some work to the 4runner bull bar, getting it closer to being able to send it to the sandblaster and powder coater. Have a look where ryco filters are made now mate, the quality of them has gone downhill.
@@fisherman6794 yeah I haven’t been able to find an Australian filter manufacturer yet. Please let me know if you know of any. My goal is to use Australian made where possible, Australian owned (manufactured overseas) is next best. For these old engines I don’t have a problem with Ryco but for the future V8 builds I doubt I will use them.
Hey mate I just stumbled across your channel. This brings back great memories. My father bought a brand-new one identical to yours in red back in 1986 and paid $14,500 for it! It had the big !! 4y 2.2 litre petrol in it I learned to drive and got my license in it she was a great vehicle. If I had yours ide have to keep it original but I will follow along with your build cheers mate
@@paulshennan2504 How cool mate, I’m glad you found the channel and cheers for the comment 👍
What's the part number on the heater tap?
@@ratpinscher The part number is 87240-89115 “Valve”
Hey bud bit of advise when doin cooling systems on a hilux always take the top heater tap hose of to bleed the air out otherwise overheat or creates severe air bubbles in the radiator. Keep up the work though doin well.
Cheers for the tip mate, I actually thought that’s what the no spill funnel was supposed to do by having the coolant level sit higher than any hoses or possible trapped air pockets. When I get the car back I will give it another bleed with the top Heater hose off and see how it goes. I may actually do another full flush and fill yet, we’ll see. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
All good man just trying to help out.. also it's a non spill funnel not a bleeding funnel. You will always get air trapped at the highest point. 👍
@@craigivas4037 ok thanks mate, good to know. I didn’t realise they were two separate things. I will definitely try your method as soon as I get the car back l, thanks again 👍
Hey mate, I replaced mine with the same ebay vinyl jobbie. Did yours take ages to remove the old plastic and prep the surface? Mine was a b1tch!! I also put some glad wrap over the exposed adhesive on the new vinyl after installation to the backing plate to stop dirt/dust sticking to it over time. These make it look so much better tho!
@@wheelbarrow01 Yeah mate, the old one was so brittle it took ages but using a heat gun helped. The glad wrap is a great idea. I have nothing and was thinking the same thing about the dirt so I will pull it back off and cover it, thanks for the tip 👍 and yeah they look heaps better!
I'm removing a 4YE out of an old RV Tarago and fitting it to our 85 4Runner. I don't need any of the electronic bits and pieces if you need any spares as I'm running bigger injectors and a standalone ECU. The 4Runner is just a great little car.
@@philby5810 That’s awesome mate and I may get in touch in the future. I have managed to find the connectors I have been chasing finally. Yotashop in the USA has them brand new so Im good for now. I will be pulling the 4YE down the track to do an engine conversion so just need to keep it running reliably at this point. I totally agree mate they are great little 4x4, I get a big smile every time I jump in it👍
Expect your water pump to fail soon.. its so common after a cooling system flush. Honestly, if you havent already put it back together I'd do the pump and thermostat now. keep up the good work, thats a gem of a little 4Runner!
@@DuncanMargetts Very true mate and I am 100% expecting the water pump to fail sooner rather than later, especially after feeling how much grit was in those hoses. I have ordered a new one as well as a Thermostat 👍
@@Shed-To-Beach Oh.. and don't be afraid to shove your garden hose into one of those heater core hoses and flush the heater core out with the garden hose.
@@DuncanMargetts haha😂 I did exactly that but it was off camera 👍 got a heap of nasty water out of there. I’ve taken all the inlet and outlet hoses off and shoved the hose up each of them so hopefully it’s reasonably flushed now. But will still definitely be replacing the water pump and thermostat. Just based on how rusty the heater tap was alone.
Mate ur factory paint is nice
@@SRadford Yeah it’s not bad and I would much rather a closed door respray over a full tear down and colour change as far as cost and time goes. Maybe I’ll save the custom paint for the next build
Blue
@@fadecactus4656 Blue would be nice but I actually have a blue picked out for a future Xtra cab Hilux build. I don’t want 2 the same colour so no blue for this one 👍
a light grey
@@gamerelfhighelf6459 Light grey? Like Nardo Grey? That would be cool. I actually think I have seen one on an American UA-cam channel painted a colour similar to Nardo grey and it did look pretty good 👍
@Shed-To-Beach yer good colour but paint it what make you happy mate 👍
@@gamerelfhighelf6459 Yeah for sure mate, I think it will be staying factory colour but ai might change up the decals, we’ll see. I’ll change my mind 6 times before it happens.
What do you think of the final product? Let me know in the comments. I think the tray turned out really well. If I was going to keep this for myself I would have definitely changed the colour of the cab though.
Will the 1988 Toyota 4runner make it all the way across Australia after sitting in a shed for 4 or 5 years? Let me know what you think below and if you have an old Toyota 4runner I`d love to hear about it in the comments.
What`s the furthest you have driven after an old vehicle purchase? Did you have any dramas along the way?
What oils do you use in your 1st Gen 4Runner?
Just a bit of advice. Toyota 5spd and transfers don’t really like the Penrite 80w90. If you suddenly have trouble shifting gears it’ll be the oil. I’ve gone with Castrol VMX80. Other then that I’m also a fan of Penrite
@@robcantwell1981 Thanks for the advice Rob, Mine is an Auto so the book says to use DEX 2 for the transfer case. From what I have been able to read it seems it’s due to the possibility of a seal leaking and the auto trans fluid mixing with the transfer case oil/fluid. I am going to make a call to an old Toyota mechanic to confirm but I think I will be using the same DEX 3 auto fluid for both the auto transmission and transfer case.
Iv always avoided penrite ok its Australian made so they recon but ive always avoided it it's expensive seems like Australian stuff is more expensive for Australians but they seem to sell it cheaper overseas , bit like our local beers it's cheaper to buy when your interstate 🤔
@@davidmilledge221 yeah apparently we even pay more for our own beef than other countries do to import it, crazy. But I don’t find Penrite that much more expensive than say Castrol or Valvoline. At least not where I shop. I do usually buy when on they come on special though 👍
Hey mate, you can test the rear window switch in the centre console by unplugging the switch and jumpering the terminals. If you get the window to work, it's likely that the switch just needs a good clean as it will have 35 years of lint, dust and crap all down in there. While the switch assembly can be prised apart, it's best not to as you're likely to snap something (brittle). What I did is take my switch out, spray it liberally with electrical contact cleaner, and then rock the switch back and forth for like 10 minutes, then I held it upside down and spray rinsed it with more contact cleaner. Give it the old windmill at arms length to remove the excess cleaner and let it dry. I did that about 3 years ago and mine has been working great ever since.
@@wheelbarrow01 thanks mate, I plan to go through and clean every switch and contact etc. Like you said there is probably 36 years of dust and crap in all the nooks and crannies 👍
Those drip rail covers and the adhesive shown in the video appear to be factory. My JDM Hilux Surf imported to NZ from Japan has the same ones, except mine are chrome (and falling apart).
@@wheelbarrow01 thanks for the info mate. I have never seen them before until now.
Shed facts 🤣🤣
@@TiaDakoda May or may not be actual facts….
Looking forward to next video. Just bought a 2nd gen 4Runner not running.
@@SRadford Thanks mate, I came close to buying a 2nd.gen myself before this one popped up. The 2nd gen’s are great 👍
Nothing wrong with a farmers union, unless you dont have anywhere to stop for a 💩 🤣
@@2874mattm haha yeah they were ok, just keeping the state ice coffee fued alive. And I’m pretty sure they all need to be consumed within sighting distance of a toilet 💩
That would've been a hellish trip, those things are so slow and uncomfortable
@@MAC10JONES It is actually surprisingly comfortable to drive now the steering is fixed. Obviously not by new car standards but being IFS and With cruise control it was quite nice to drive. It would have happily sat on 110kph as well if it didn’t lose the overdrive gear. I was really pleasantly surprised 👍
You’ve obviously never owned one… I had an 84 model 4Runner with the leaf sprung front and it was quite comfy, slowed up a bit on steeper hills but got along ok at speed limits, a hell of a lot more comfy than my 1976 HJ45 Cruiser.
@@absinth64 yeah they are actually very comfortable. Once I sort the auto out, with cruise control this thing was a dream to drive. And the best part was being able to roll a sleeping bag out in the back when I needed a sleep. 👍
@@absinth64 youre obviously a Toyota person. That's all I need to know
@@MAC10JONES Not really, I’ve had 2 Nissan Patrols, a CJ5 Jeep, 2 Range Rovers and yes, a few Toyotas. My favorite was the Range Rover, hands down the best for power and comfort. Comparing vehicles like for like and same year of manufacture most of them are pretty much the same. The Hilux range although for many years underpowered were a big step up in comfort from Patrols, Landcruisers, Jeeps and (cough) Landrovers of the time.
finally been waiting for this episode
@@johanbreedt307 haha, thanks for watching mate and sorry it took so long 👍
Well done on your journey glad to see only a minor issue.. looking forward to the overhaul.

@@TiaDakoda Yeah I have faith haha, the old girl will make it. She’s running sweet after a bit of work on the brakes and steering 👍
She's gonna be a beauty to work on mate, only thing I would warn about is the transmission, those pre 94' auto's can be a pain if it's ran dirty fluid for a while
@@stevescience7187 Thanks for the heads up mate. I definitely intend to do a full trans fluid drain and refill with some fresh stuff. Definitely looking forward to working in it. The trip is off to a shaky start but I think she is sorted now and Im confident she’ll get me back to Perth 👍

Thanks mate, appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. The tray is 1720mm wide by 2080mm long. Those are outside (overall) measurements. It’s hard to get the dimensions right, I feel this one is good proportions but it’s subjective too. Some people like really short bobbed trays etc 👍
@@Shed-To-Beach thanks mate. Might be someone very similar soon.
Looks very good. If I was swapping the engine, I'd probably go with a 5VZ, small, light, simple and reliable, plenty of power for an old Hilux.
Thanks for watching mare and cheers for the comment. I would definitely lean towards a 5VZ as well but they are not easy to find with low km’s 👍
@@Shed-To-Beach true, low kay doners are pretty rare, the newer generation 1GR would be easier to find with low kays, but the price would be a fair bit higher. Looking forward to seeing what's next.

Love ya stuff mate! been looking out for one of these for a while now, getting harder to get a hold of a good one.
Thanks mate, this one will be up for sale very shortly 👍
The reason I would think the cab is leaning down on the right side is because over time the leaf has started to compress and it starts to sag, mines the same. Love the build series man keep it up!
Cheers mate, yeah the only problem is if the leaf was sagging the whole car would lower not just the cab, if you get my thinking. The Cab being lower in relation to the tray has me thinking worn body mounts. But only one way to find out hey. Thanks for watching and cheers for the comment 👍

Nice content man, the way the captions are done a bit distracting though, you're understandable, you dont need burned in captions. (If the yanks cant understand its a them problem!)
Thanks for the feedback mate. The captions were an experiment to see if it resulted in more/longer engagement. But I think you’re right. No real need for them. Gotta try these things though 👍
@@Shed-To-Beach Yeah fair cop. I watch lads from Appalachia regularly, rural strayan needs to be its own thing too. UA-cam AI will fix it if need be, lol .
This is looking great buddy! Don't even get me started on moving heavy things around haha, I have a split level backyard with a 600 dividing wall, I I came up with the most farked up way to lift a complete flat 6 engine over the wall and down the bottom. It involved a 750 comealong and a LOT of patience and rigging methods, and a LOT of scrap steel and brake rotors and car batteries and shit to make sure it equalised as it was going over the wall.

Many memories with this Hilux. It was only a couple days ago a memory on Facebook popped up of my brother driving it down the beach when I first got my 80. Had the original red tray on it that was rusted out. And those Sunny's and cooper tyres were already a few years old then. Used to get quite hot with the Holley.
