How to make a wooden hand plane part 3
When talking about the shape of the plane, I meant that I use cardboard to cut it out with first. Then the plane is marked after using the template.

Part 1 of 3. You can apply the same principles to a smoothing plane or jack plane (you make the mouth opening in front of the iron smaller). It is a good idea to start out with a mouth opening tighter than you think you need to, it often ends up bigger. Thank you for watching! I will upload the drawings to my website. www.kubberodplanes.com/blog-2-1/coffin-shaped-scrub-plane 0:00 Intro 1:10 Exp...

    I’ve heard that wooden hand planes leave a more polished finish than metal ones due to the sole of the plane burnishing the wood. Is this true?

    • @Sindrekub
      @Sindrekub День тому

      @@FaidosWorkshop I dont think you could tell the difference in finish with a sharp iron on a wooden or metal plane. I believe you would need more burnish work than the stroke of the plane. The bottom of the wooden planes become very smooth, but it takes some time of use. I think what leaves the best possible finish is a very sharp iron and tight mouth on a plane, be it metal or wood. Thank you for watching!

    Very nice work! I have never seen an axe used to shave & profile a wooden plane, your confident & and skilled at that, definitely not something i will ever try as i value my fingers & thumbs too much. I have used different oils on wood over the years, Raw linseed/Boiled, Tung oil & Danish oil, think Tung oil is my favourite though. I was very close to purchasing your Ebony Infill plane the other day but had to restrain myself, sorry😓. I am pretty sure i have it in me to make a dovetailed smoothing plane of that style, just not quite aligned my brain on doing it as yet…. I look forward to your future uploads…All the best from Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Thank you for watching Stephen, I wanted to show how it is possible to do precision work with an axe also. That is understandable about the Infill plane. As the saying goes: You only cry once 😁 If you decide to give it a go I'd love to see! All the best from the cold north :)

    Thanks for making these videos, man. I'm working on my 5th plane right now. If you do another wooden body plane, can you show more detail of the abutements with the taper to the cheeks? When making a wooden smoother with a fine mouth opening and slim abutements taper, how do you carve it out?

    • @Sindrekub
      @Sindrekub 6 днів тому

      @@heMANshred Thank you, glad it is helpful :) Usually I chisel it out, if the grain is difficult you can take a chisel and grind it for a bit with the flat side up to convert it to a scraper(blunt chisel technique, Bill Carter has a good video on this). It also works really well with a gouge. This part is always very tricky with grain going the wrong direction, I will make a video on a wooden smoother and jack in the future. I will make sure to provide more detail on this procedure.

    Beautiful work! A question just out of curiosity: Why do these planes lack a handle? Wouldn't the work with those be a bit more comfortable if there was one?

    • @Sindrekub
      @Sindrekub Місяць тому

      @@_InTheBin Thank you, glad you like it :) They were made this way traditionally, however there is an old twin handled one by Robert Towell where he experimented with putting a handle on one. Having a long iron lets you use the iron as a handle, combined with resting your thumb on the front infill this does provide for a pretty good grip. When taking thin shavings like the ones in the video, there is really not much force required to push the plane through the wood. Also, when you’ve got a wedged plane the wedge makes for a nice thumb rest. I’m not exactly sure why they didn’t handle their planes back in the day, but I’ve not yet longed for handles on the traditional style ones that I’ve made
