Yes that is my next one! We'll see how I manage haha. Styd helped me a lot in helping its frame rate. We'll see if I need to edit it more for smooth N64 gameplay though!

I need to test this on actual hardware. Looking at the video, the turning speed looks really bad, not smooth at all. It's not that hard to aim on vanilla Doom 64 for the N64.
Is the filtering disabled by default?
No! Filtering is on by default, but me being me, I always disable it and let the intro play as I start recording and get comfortable haha.
Can Brutal Doom 64 be played with this?
Yes, the Unseen Evil parts of it would need to be taken out though.

I never liked Doom or FPS at all. But wow this looks fantastic. Such a great job making this game look and run so good 😁👍 Even if it is not a game for me this is just great for the Dreamcast scene.
Indeed, thanks to JNMartin there is a lot better understanding of normal maps on Dreamcast now. Perhaps other Dreamcast homebrew can take advantage of it now! :D

Guess we're running doom 64 on everything rather than the original doom. Jokes aside, this is an impressive port. I do like how it's faithful to the original d64 while also adding some graphical improvements (for example, the shotgunner having a darker appearance than the zombieman). The lost levels and knee-deep in the dead were nice additions to the port. I do have one question: can you change the music in the knee-deep in the dead episode? As much as I love hulshult's work, I feel like PSX Doom's music/ambience would be a better choice. But that's just from my perspective. That aside, I'd give my respect to martin for putting his efforts into creating a great port. Hope his work gets more recognition from the community.
Right now there isn't a menu option to change the music. But that shouldn't be too hard to implement! Well at least to do the Doom 64 style music instead of metal. To get the PSX tracks, I could swap out the metal tracks with those versions when I compile the game. That isnt really difficult either, just a matter of converting to the right format :) .

@jnmartin84 is there potential to add to this further with added multiplayer/coop for the maps that don't use room over room tricks? I would have used CD Audio versions of Doom PS1 music with those original convert maps. Doom 64 is more of a sequel to Doom PS1 than Doom PC. The rock tracks don't really fit atmospheric theme.
Very solid effort. If this had been a retail release back in the day it would have been very well received.
I wonder ya! I know game reviewers back then seemed to be tired of Doom and didnt like the idea of sprite enemies. However the dynamic lighting and normal mapping could have changed their minds!

Does texture filtering impact the framerate?
We aren't quite sure! I personally haven't seen a very consistent change in frame rate. But perhaps if I did some over time averaging, it might show itself! I will ask around too!
@@mankrip- My understanding is that twiddled/swizzled textures make filtering basically free on the pvr
I haven't noticed much of a difference on or off. Something that does kill performance is when a textured quad with holes takes up most of the screen and every pixel behind it has to be tested for blending. Makes 60 fps scenes drop to 30
@@mankrip- turns out it can have a large impact on fill rate/frame rate. I noticed before when grates were stretched over large polys covering screen the fps halved. I just observed that this does not happen when running with filtering off

I am not sure if Kaze has big interests outside of Super Mario 64, but if he does I would be happy to show him the code and help him find things! As for Doom 64 CE, you're referring to the PC version that runs on GZDoom? If so, it already has the Dreamcast features and more. When it was released it already had dynamic lighting and runs at 60 FPS+.

This looks like a good and interesting wad for Doom 64. Not sure how Doom 64 Absolution Remastered is. Not sure if it is like Atomic Frogs Doom 64 Reloaded or not. This one looks very promising and hope to see more updates with this one. Does the campaign work with the Kex remaster that came out as well aside from this new port for Doom 64
I like it a lot too but I feel it could use less color and not as well lit to give it a more "Doom 64ish" feel if you will.
Doom 64 Absolution Remastered works with KEX ya! It adds extra levels and extra level parts from the Doom 64 Absolution TC that came out back in 2003. It doesnt add the amount of detail that Doom 64 Reloaded does, but it its a homage to the first Doom 64 mod.

Can't say Im a fan of the Shotgun flash lol. I mean... that shotgun is producing a flash that would only be that intense if the room was super dark.
Eventually we will get a brightness slider for the dynamic lights :)
