A piece I wrote for my dear friend Gregus Pal, who built the alto tarogato I'm playing here. A fan, Stephanie Chu, caught this video of the tune during my recent quartet run at Birdland in NYC. Unfortunately the solos were not captured; this is all the footage I have.

Tarogato at Skytop Tower
Переглядів 4363 роки тому
Scott Robinson plays tarogato and bass tarogato at the Skytop Tower in Mohonk Preserve on June 17, 2021. This performance was part of the "Music on the Mountain" festival produced by the Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY. The tarogato is a very special Hungarian instrument, designated a National Treasure there.
Powers^100: Music in honor of artist Richard M Powers
Переглядів 7723 роки тому
I created this composition/video in honor of the centennial of artist Richard M. Powers one of my biggest artistic influences, whose work has informed and inspired my music for many years. It is a new way I have been making music: turning improvisations into compositions, directly to the recording with no written or worked out music. I started by improvising a piece on the tenor sax just one ta...
Mute-ation #1 for Brass Septet
Переглядів 2,1 тис.4 роки тому
I wrote this little piece to showcase the sound of the Denis Wick wooden straight mutes for brass, which I love. I have seven sizes of these mutes, so I wrote the piece for one each of those seven instruments: Eb soprano cornet, Bb trumpet, F horn, Eb tenor (alto) horn, trombone, euphonium, and Bb tuba. Recorded here at ScienSonic Laboratories: www.sciensonic.net. -Scott Robinson
Birthday Tribute to George Garzone!
Переглядів 2994 роки тому
George Garzone is one of the most inspiring musicians on this earth, and was my most influential teacher back in the seventies. He is a friend of ScienSonic Laboratories; the collaborative recording we made here at the Lab will be coming out soon. George turns 70 today... I want to wish him a very Happy Birthday, and attempt to play his ridiculously hard saxophone line!

Scott Robinson plays some Mingus on trumpet

Here's an off-the-cuff version of Charles Mingus' "Blue Cee," done at ScienSonic Laboratories for a Mingus Mondays livestream in July 2020. I'm playing an old Conn trumpet with my Denis Wick wooden mute. Love this mute!
Scott Robinson Quartet at Kitano Feb 2017

Here's a little video caught from a front table by ScienSonic Laboratory member Joseph Banks, during a packed set at Kitano in NYC on Feb. 4, 2017. Wow, what a rhythm section! Helen Sung, Martin Wind, Pete Van Nostrand. OK, I cracked a coupla notes... but man, the time feel in the band is just incredible.

I spoke about Frank in this installment of ScienSonic's Sound-of-the-Month Club video series from a few months ago, in which I play his unusual bass flute. These videos, posted each month, are for our ScienSonic members... but in honor of Frank's birthday, January 4th, thought I would share this with everybody. I grew up in the 60s with Richard Powers’ art on the covers of sci-fi novels. The artwork often seemed to me to be more interesting, more involving, more suggestive, more prescient and more compelling than many of the stories inside.

Thank you! Two more wild beasts to be preserved. This bass-tarogáto seems so unwieldy that probably only you can make it sound good. Have you ever had access to the Heckelphon-Clarinette (not unlike a tenor tarogáto but with an heckelphone like pear shaped bell)? I haven't, but all instruments by Heckel (famous for his bassoons of cause) I know are extremely well made. They are very rare unfortunately. And, btw, as far as I am concerned, you could have posted mo'Monk from Mohonk! You (taro)gáto my head with this...

    • @scottrobinson2060
      @scottrobinson2060 3 роки тому

I've never seen the Heckelphon-Klarinette in person, only a photo. It does seem very close to a low tarogato. I do have a pair of old Heckel Albert system clarinets.

Much thanks for this video! It changed my opinion about bass flutes, bigger bore size is not always the better choice. This flute may have less dBs, but has the warm timbre of an alto flute… regards!
