Front Axle Rebuild in My 3rd Gen Cummins!! AAM 9.25 Bearings Seals and Ball Joints!!!
I rebuild the front axle in Ole Smokey, my 3rd gen 2006 ram Cummins. I tear down the axle and replace the carrier and pinion bearings, axle shaft seals, pinion seal, axle shaft u-joints, and ball joints. This would have been a great time to do the brakes and wheel bearings but we will have to do that later when the budget allows. I wanted to show the struggles I faced so you can be better prepared for the job if you try to tackle it yourself as well. Some of the tools that I would definitely recommend would be a large throat ball joint press, and a u-joint separator. Links in the description. Also the torque King 4x4 is a great video to follow along with during the rebuild.

How is it compared to stock driving big difference??
Haven’t ridden in a stock truck in a long time so I couldn’t tell you, the trans in my truck was toast when I bought it so I never drove it stock. But I wouldn’t say the shifts are outrageous, they are nice and firm. Firm lockup but not a neck breaker. Thanks for watching!
Good for another 500,000
I sure hope so! 🤞
NICE

Excellent collection of tools. Can never have too many 😅
Oh I know! I got a tone more on my wish list! Thanks for watching!
How much for one of those.
The rebuild kit? I think it was around $750. Thanks for watching!
Are you still selling the wrench racks
Yes I am!
Is it the universal or 03-12 Edge CTS3?
Universal, part number is 84130-3, thanks for watching!
@@hugh_hancock Thanks! Good video!
you missed a bunch of the ums sr.
I did my best 😂
Great way to start a video. Trust in the Lord!

Nice job man what is your tire and wheel set up ?
Thanks! Tires and wheels are 33x12.50r20 nitto ridge grapplers on 20x12 gear big blocks.
That’s when you know the truck staying around for awhile, gotta do that EGT for my banks economind I just got
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Just a suggestion. Get some socket rails, harbor freight has some nice ones. Put all the sockets in the top. Get the blow molded cases out of the tool box and free up some space. Keep the blow molded cases in a closet or shelf in the garage if you sell the tools later.
I have seen some setups like that and it does look like it works well! I do like how my setup has been functioning but I do want a little better access to my 1/2in socket. I do like keeping the 1/4 drive sockets in the case bc there has been several grab-and-go situations. But the 3/8 drive sockets are definitely the most used. But keep you’re eyes out, I have some box mods soon that might end up rearranging the box some. Thanks for watching!
AMEN, I hope you do good selling these, they are very nice and I would love to have a set one day I just can't spare $75 right now. I know it is not a lot of money but when you are living pay check to pay check and doing what you can to just survive, you really can not justify spending money on things you want and do not NEED. Thanks for sharing and I wish you nothing but success.
I totally understand man, family and needs first and projects come last, that’s how it is with me. Thanks for all the kind words and thanks for watching! And they will be around for whenever you’re ready for a set!
Great job on your wrench drawer. The best I’ve seen!
Thanks! It’s been working great! Thanks for watching!
Your wrench drawer is great!
Thanks! It’s been working amazingly! Thanks for watching!
How did this thing shift after? A rough 1-2?
Honestly not that bad, definitely better than stock but not a neck breaker. But idk how worn out some of my valve bores are but it’s holds good line pressure.
I watched this out of curiosity. I have a CTS3 and an Edge EGT probe. When I installed the CTS3, nothing came up under EGT except EGT Pre DPF and EGT post DPF. I tapped EAS Setting and the tutorial came up. I went continue, continue, continue, continue, keep tutorial and it went back to the main gauge screen. Tapped EAS Settings again and went through the same tutorial routine and got back to the gauge screen again. Tried to get Edge but their technical assistance is busy answering E-mails from other people have problems with their products, it takes hours to get a response.
What truck did you put it on? It’s been a while since I installed mine, but I remember I had to “configure PID” for the egt probe. I did have some issues with my screen not waking up on start up and I communicated with edge, I ended up just being weak truck batteries. But email was definitely the best way to communicate with them even though it took a while getting responses.
@@hugh_hancock 2007.5 GMC 2500HD. It has the diesel LMM engine in it. What do you mean by 'configure'?
Are we over looking dirty hooker??
Yes because DH doesn’t have a full bed, interior, and street legal!
@@hugh_hancock you need to make some adjustments to your book then
How so?
I have allot gear wrench tools I love em
I’m lovin mine too! Thanks for watching!
If you remove the system, how do you fix the hole in the manifold?
1/8in pipe plug should do the trick
A couple other videos they drilled then used a pencil magnet through the hole,do you think running it is a better option?
What book are you using to put together the transmission?
ATSG 48re manual

Nice choices man! Love GearWrench tools! I think you gonna need a bigger box though 😂
I’ve been using them all for over a year now and I am loving them! And yes I would love a bigger box, got my eye on one of the HF 56” or 72”, it will come with time!
Can you rebuild my 47re sir
Thank you for the offer but I don’t know if I want to make a business out of it, thanks for watching!
I have a gearwrench 3/8 Dr medium length handle about 8 inch long chrome non comfort grip fixed head and a 3 inch long i think stubby 84t non comfort grip handle fixed head ratchet set from napa $45, and the 120 xp sae gearwrench shallow and deep including metric sockets and the 3/8 90t comparable sae and metric deep well and shallow well socket set or the two are backwards i often don't remember which one is which one is a 1/4 Dr set and one is a 3/8 Dr set that i can tell but I usually have to look up if the 3/8 is the 120xp or the 90t set?!
I sure am enjoying my set, I love the long handled swivel head 3/8dr ratchet the most if I were to pick one. Thanks for watching!
Duramax?
Yes sir!
What am excellent video you explained everything about endplay all the way thru even disassembling it to correct end play which is the most important part of an auto trans get it wrong and they don't last long at all considering it's not that tight if a tolerance. Compared to other things. Just a great video thank you.
Thanks for watching!
How do you keep the piston in position on the connecting rod
I slide the piston as far to one side on the wrist pin, stand the rod straight up and then just gob a nice fat mig weld to the rod/wrist pin/ and piston and it holds it in place
Thickness of holder?
.120 in
Picked up on your comment re front drive shafts going wild.. any preventative tips for keeping mine healthy (‘06 Ram 2500 5.9L 207k mi’s)? Thanks for the video!
The 06’s should have a tiny grease fitting in the middle of the double cardian joint up by the transfer case. I have also heard to rebuild or replace the front shaft every 100k or so. Thanks for watching!
Amazing. Picked up an ‘06 2500 5.9L 207k miles, w/ 48RE 4-spd AT. I thought I’m doing well to change fluid (which was not bad in appearance) and filter. And going to adjust the two bands (have Dodge specs) { _ I do not think I could accomplish what you are doing_ }. I’m just going through this truck and changing all the fluids, cleaning electrical connections.. so I have a base to move fwd from. Thanks again for doing your videos. Art in Michigan
Yes keep them bands adjusted, especially 2nd gear. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Make sure you smear some grease and Vaseline on the camera lens for the next video you record. what a pile of rubbish
Thanks for the kind words! Got a new phone now!
Good choice in tools. Your definitely going to need a bigger tool cart.
They came out with that 72in slate gray at HF I got my eye on! Thanks for watching!
I work in a shop. I've recently started investing in GearWrench and fallen in love with the brand. I was originally investing in Craftsman but have gradually transitioned. A lot of the people in my shop have Snap-On, Cornwell, Mac, and Matco. Pretty much the main tool truck brands. I've handled many of their tools working under different techs as an apprentice. I have to say, a lot of my GearWrench feels very similar to those tools. I'm not really interested in spending my money on the tool trucks because I feel like there are many other tool brands that offer similar quality that I can get elsewhere for a fraction of the price. GearWrench has become my favorite.
I agree for sure! I have used some snap on stuff where I work as well and gearwrench definitely feels just as good! I will say you can’t beat a snap-on digital torque wrench though, if you know of something just as good but cheaper let me know because I need one!
this a 5.9 ?
Yes it is
Are these still available? Looking a set for my cart if you are still making them let me know so I can place order thank you.
Yes! Orders on them have been pretty quiet for a while but I still have 2 or 3 sets in stock!
Next time you head to Gulches hit me up, I live in woodruff and have a 97 XJ
Will do man! Gonna try to go in the next month or so! Thanks for watching!
@hugh_hancock yah let me know its always good going with other Xj's
I did a Transgo SK48 looks similar to your kit and I also see vacuum instruction from Sonnax. Not sure if I missed anything. Did you use any Sonnax parts? Also, did you do any surface grinding on any of the casting bodies? Thanks for the video.
I did not use any sonnax parts, I just got their vacuum test instructions off their website, but it was for a 47re trans. I really hit a dead end on acceptable leak numbers, so I just slapped it back together as it, I didn’t do any grinding. When I first put it in the truck I ran a line pressure gauge and I have great pressure at each gear, I currently have about 12k miles on it now with some towing. Thanks for watching!
good shit bud.. thats one way to do it lmao
I saved a few bucks but duggum it was a headache!
The biggest mistake Dodge ever made was bolting a 4 speed transmission to an industrial engine. No matter what you do to that 4 speed it is still a 4 speed when that small rpm range engine needs at least six.
Six speed would be nice, but some of those guys sure can build the 48’s to hold some serious power! Thanks for watching!
@@hugh_hancock for competition the 48s these days can hold tremendous power but for every day use it needs more gears. I have a G56 and sometimes wish I had 7th or 8th gear
There's a couple conversion out there with a Eaton ranger trans behind these. A standard is the best for towing or sliding but in competition there is always weak link at some point the record was I think I'm the 2022 truck challenge a 6.7 Cummins 3400 rear wheel horse power and around 3300 foot pounds of torque don't know if it was corrected or not but defanatly impressive build. I use mine for heavy towing and a 48re is not what I want it's good to go fast but hard towing gets it hot. Heavy towing in the 35k to 40 k range tuff on a pickup not impossible but not for everyone either. Be safe always.
That was really cool. Loved that. I've got some new gearwrench ratcheting wrenches and they're pretty nice at a really great price! Was looking at that 5 drawer. It was on sale for Black Friday and the series 3s are coming out soon so they'll be on clearance for even lower very soon.
Yes it is a great box and tools, I’m loving mine and using the crap out of them! I would love to do the stacked box mod to give me a little more space! Thanks for watching!
@@hugh_hancock- keep your eyes peeled because I think the 6 drawer full bank cart will be on clearance after the first of the year. Saw some SEMA vids with HF and the Series 3, 6 drawer full bank is supposed to be released in early 2024.
Nice haul! Im a Gearwrench fan 👍
Thanks, I’m loving them! Thanks for watching!
Damn... that's sexy....
Thanks for the video! How does the trans run now?
It’s running great! Got 10k on it now, nice firm shifts and good line pressure. One of my later videos I show it running in the truck and show the line pressure. Thanks for watching!
you smack the top of boxes more then you say ummm by far 😂 Nice tour vid!
I think you are right 😂 thanks for watching!
I was hoping it had transmission settings…, I’ve done all the air intake upgrades first, more air cooler engines. Hopefully soon I’ll find the right one for mine. Good video
I love being able to see what gear I’m in and if the TC is locked, and it is definitely important to know your EGTs. Try to go to a diesel event, most of the vendors have deals and you’ll have a blast seeing all the trucks race too! Thanks for watching!
does it have a nicer ride now without the overload spring?
Never got to drive it with it but I’m assuming it is softer, now I just need to get a set of tow assist bags.
The um counter is more annoying than the um
Thanks for the input boss 👍🏻
