I Faced My Breaking Point at the Galibier Challenge
What is up guys! Welcome back to another fondo report on the channel.
Earlier this year I tackled the Galibier challenge. An alpine gran fondo event in the French Alps. The route took us around and onto the legendary Col du Galibier. This video is a recap of how that experience went for me.

@@johnwong3514 as far as I can remember I turned it every possible way lol to little avail until it grabbed. My heartrate at 175 bpm didn’t help in steadying my nerves. But yes, I did probably end up turning it the wrong way more than I needed to

they are not amateurs. amateurs work full time and don't train like a pro, my opinion.😉

Genetics have very little impact. It's training, age, diet and mental condition, not genetics.
@@ottobihrer732 so you’re saying that when I was 26 and I trained, ate and was in his mindset I would have been able to do what he does? Man, did I choose the wrong career
A lot of PEDs being passed around the amateurs in Belgium. Couple this to cycling being a national sport, a racing heritage, lots of pro's coming to Flanders to train and Flemish pride, you have a lot of people who are good racers. The saying here goes: "In Holland they cycle, in Belgium we race."
@@MrTuubster and then when the average joe fancies having a go, it’s a harsh encounter with your points above 😅
I think you did great and your rhythm was contained by the initial race constraints and very little room for passing. Drafting is the worse for power deployment as it causes too many ups and downs. Having won two Fondos, without PMs, it came down to high energy racing day and never ending steady pace. One event a decade ago I averaged 37.5 and it was my limit being alone at the front, preserving water and limited slowdown for nutrition. Had I had a teammate we could have done faster. Another event, at pace with an OHL professional hockey player, we pushed over 39 km hour until his lack of experience and threshold collapsed his energy, some sections 40 km/ hour and my equipment was rudimentary (run of the mill monocoque) versus unattainable Venge or so. Bike equipment matters, good equipment can buy another 1, 1.5 km per hour and above certain speeds. For your race, the faster paced riders carried each other at the higher speeds and pushing the wattage you mention as your best. Then again, 250 watts for an 75 kg rider is easily defeated by 230 watts of a 60 kg rider. Not just ftp but profile drag etc. so I think given where you were stuck in the peloton you did right. If repeating this but starting at the front and pairing with faster riders, it would be much better by 2-3 km per hour.
thanks for chipping in! Good to read I didn't do all that bad! Also, I might need to get a new bike now ;)
Oooh new channel to watch. Digging the format. Going through back catalogue. I'm a two unit guy too, commenting as I watch.... Intrigued result, as you say no casual drink absence vids. Case n point Dan Lloyd's latest GCN video (albeit still interesting)

Absolutely. With all dedication and years of trainign I cannot go more than 320W for 20 min in my peak form. But there are guys who easily hit 400W after a half yeare trainig at their near 30 years old ) This might even looks unbelievable but this is the fact. ))

@@fondoquest with perfect roads 😉
Did you say 300+ riders at the start? On narrow roads? You are dropped at the starting line! Unless you line up in the front third you will never get anywhere near the front. Moving up within all of that matter is against the laws of physics
@@rickiovine2170 500+ actually 😅😅 so yes an uphill battle to say the least
You are not deteriorating as much as you think during that first big climb. Adjust your power for altitude when analyzing (use Peronnet values): - First part of big climb is 253 when adjusted for altitude - Second part is 238 when adjusted Also there is a 0 section in that second part due to a small descent, so look at NP rather than avg P.
@@zwamman thanks for this! Really interesting. Makes me feel a touch better but the feeling still wasn’t great although I’m now thinking did I let the numbers get in my head
it's a lot clearer in running. For some reason people seem to be able to fake high level ability a lot longer on a bike...I've never quite understood it. you can't fake a 5:10 mile
My very limited experience in racing would have me say it's likely due to 'race tactics' - knowing how to surf wheels, how to position etc.. those things are likely helping people stay in groups way above their paygrade....
just an idea you have to ride 1 time with schelde peleton in we st flanders

I liked it. Also thanks for pointing out things. I also do not believe those are hobby riders.
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it.
That's an awesome clip, great foottage and off-camera comments. As you climb, your FTP should be re-calculated to factor in decrease in oxygen density. The decline is even larger, if you are not acclimated. Enjoy your rides and thank you for the clip again!
thank you, Adam! Yes, I very ignorantly somehow completed ignored the altitude element. Also having only arrived 3 days before the event wouldn't have helped I guess :)
Having not long returned from a gravel trip to the Pyrenees i can sympathise just how blinking hard proper mountain gravel is. 2 of my 7 days were the hardest thing i have ever done on a bike. Its unlikley i will ever do a trip like that again as its really affected my mojo to ride a bike. I shall be sticking to road riding in the mountians going forwards i think.
boy can I relate to this.... safe to say my mojo was at an all time low after this ride here lol.... good thing the next day I had a road fondo to not dwell too long... thanks for watching!
Is this an older race that you just uploaded? The last time I saw you had got some bad news about your father 😢and you were going to take a break. If this is a new race I’m glad to see you back on the bike. If not then thoughts are with you.
thank you, Robert, it is in fact an older race that I've only recently gotten around to creating a video for. Dates from before 'the bad news' when I was still in prep mode. Just didn't want to 'waste' the footage I guess.
What a mega route. 😮
@@SwimBikeRunStu spicy indeed yes 😅
Looks though but fun nonetheless. I just discovered your channel, on the outtro you seam puzzled by those low relative numbers, the following would be a possible explanation. I, by no mean, want to judge your performances, I am just formulating my thoughts on matter : I suspect your FTP measurement of 260 w was done at sea level and this gravel race took place at roughly 700 m of altitude. Not super high but one must adjust their targeted power output with altitude. At 700 m of altitude you can only produce 95% of that FTP and it goes down to 80% when you reach 2450 m atop the Galibier. So, pushing 250 w up that second climb (which was probably at higher elevation) was above your threshold on that day and judging by the piloting mistake you did on that right hander you already had dug your own grave at that point by staying on the gas above threshold for too long.
@@JDAvant06 I think you might be spot on with your analysis… It never dawned on me to take elevation into account… in hindsight incredibly ignorant of course, thanks for watching.

Nearly all on the magic juice
My experience is that drinking requires training. When you come to the point of barely drinking, you might suffer from it more than when you were drinking like an alcoholic. One or two beers can have me hungover by the next day. Or can mess with my sleep and have me sitting in bed for 2 hours. I often joke that if I want to visit my friends back in my hometown in France, I need to train back to drink alcohol like a solid man ahah Now I prefer to train on the bike. It feels so much better. And it makes a lot of sense to improve at it
lol very familiar what you describe. In Flanders there's a saying that those who don't drink often are 'cheap drunks', it takes very little to get them drunk.... but the price we pay the next day, I agree with you, is not worth it at all..... how times changes.. thanks for watching and chipping in.
Cool video, thanks!

@@TavisYeung thanks so much for your kind words ! Hope you had a great day out!
Alway good to add also age in the mix when comparing. 300+ FTP at 50+ is a whole different game then doing this at 20+.
yeah very valid point that
Nice vid - you earned a sub! What I love is that you showcased the importance of training and genetics. Check out all those high end aero-optimised frames, yet everyone has to attach a nice flappy laminated paper on their bars! Forget about aero gains... as if that matters compared to training.
@@michaelbrennan2209 thank you! Glad you liked it. It’s gotten to the point where organizers have to warn people not to bend their flappy paper or else their timing chip won’t work 😅 amateur racing at its finest

4w/kg was looking pretty achievable till I got sick of lacking upper body strength and added upper body stuff to my gym routine. Gained weight, lost w/kg due to that, but loss inches off the waist while gaining upper body strength so alls good 😂😂. I’d happily let the lighter folks drop me in the climb if it means I have more muscle mass for use in actually daily life
man this couldn't be more timely. I've been 'battling' with this as well. Due to circumstances I've spent less time on the bike of late and have done more gym work and have felt amazing doing so. I mean yeah sure I'm heavier and slower going uphill but in the grander scheme of things like you said it's so much more worth it! A more holistic, multi-dimensional approach works a million times better for me.
do you plan to upload the full race ?

You can save a huge amount of energy by having good race craft in the bunch. I found watching the first few minutes of the race painful as there were so many opportunities for you to get a better draft. Experienced riders look effortless in the bunch and move up on every corner. Some of this only comes from racing or fast group ride experience. Something lacking for many riders obsessing about power or indoor racing.
