Gauge Swatch for a Sweater Knit In-the-Round & Flat
Lesson 5 of Design It Yourself | Drop Shoulder Sweater Series teaches how to swatch to accurately measure gauge knitting in-the-round and knitting flat and tips for fixing uneven row gauge. Designing a custom sweater means you do not have to “get gauge” - matching a pattern designer’s gauge. Instead, you need to measure YOUR gauge with whatever yarn you choose.
A gauge swatch is a magic mirror to get a sneak peak of the future sweater. The primary reason to gauge swatch is to convert the finished measurements of a sweater from inches to stitches. A gauge swatch shows you more than just stitches and rows per inch. A swatch is a preview of the sweater’s fabric, a practice run working with the specific yarn or stitch pattern and can be used to estimate how much yarn you’ll need.
This Design it Yourself Drop Shoulder Sweater Series teaches you how to design and knit a custom sweater to fit your body and your preferences.

This is the third video I watched on this topic and it finally made sense! Thank you.
😍
Thank you so much for this clear explanation. The chart is very helpful. Maybe, just maybe the Italian bind off will finally stick in my head. If not, I'll be coming back to watch you again.

😄 I love your videos!
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and share!
This is the ONLY Italian bind off video that makes any sense! Thank you so much!! Definitely following!
🥰
Excellent video!
I don't know why this has not gone viral. The twisted loop at the end makes it all so much easier, especially when casting on two socks at the same time. Ingenious. I will only use this method from now on. Thank you so much!
I’m so happy it helps! I used to get so frustrated starting out with socks 2 at a time
Great video!
What if my first stitch is a purl stitch?
I need to test this out, but am planning on making a tutorial for it this week
Happy New Year 🎉
Happy New Year, Alice!
👏👏👏
My right side starts with a purl stitch, how would you start the sequence? Or would you create a purl stitch on the previous row to create a knit stitch as the first stitch on the right side row? Thanks.
Binding off from the WS to start with a knit is an option for sure. I am going to test out the bind off starting with a purl stitch this week to make a video showing how. I've always worked this bind off starting with a knit but there are a lot of people asking about starting with a purl.
😍
Yours was by far the best.
💜
Excellent video!
💜
Why do you do the garter stitch section? Is that just a stylistic choice or does it serve a purpose?
You got it, it was a design choice made by the designers.
💙
Excellent video! 💜
😀
Great video!

Thank you I knitted round neck 🎉
YESSSSSSSS! Well done🍾
I wish I can give a thumbs up every time I watch your video when I’m doing the Italian bind off. I’ve watched many videos regarding the Italian bind off and yours is the best. Thank you so much
If I'm honest, I wish you could too 🤣. I'm so glad you find it so helpful.
This is a great tutorial. Could you please do an Italian cast on tutorial?
Thank you! I do want to make a new Italian Cast on tutorial soon. This tutorial from a couple of years ago for the Tubular Cast on starts with the Italian Cast On. What makes it tubular is the following slip stitched rows. ua-cam.com/video/V1RWe-0_f-k/v-deo.htmlsi=3Ww48cG5CqHZd5uO
Finally, I can actually follow where I am in the sequence. Brilliant!
Great video!!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support 🤩
What comes after you knit the first 2 knit rounds?
For socks the toe increases are next. I have the Reliable Toe Up Socks pattern linked in the description with the full sock instructions.
When will the next video drop. I started making my own drop shoulder sweater before I found your video. I’m going to start over, because it didn’t fit properly. Hopefully your tips will help.
Hey there 👋🏻 I'm so glad you found this series! I'm working to release 1 lesson per week on Fridays. 12/20 Lesson 2: Body Measurements 12/27 Lesson 3: Finished Sweater Measurements 1/3 Lesson 4: Gauge Swatching 1/9 Lesson 5: Translating Finished Measurements to Stitches and Rows
🎄Thank you a lot. That close look really helps. Please tell me, do i really need TWICE the amount of stitches for this heal? Can't i use a bit less to avoid having that much wool on the front of the foot. Also, in the future can you make a video how to knit backwards to avoid turning the projects? Greetings. Best wishes. 🎇
You could experiment and try fewer stitches to see if you like the fit. That's the beauty of toe up socks. Try them on after the heel turn, you can always rip back and adjust. Adding that number of stitches is pretty standard for knitting socks with a gusset. Imagine a triangle from the back of your heel to your ankle bone then down to the sole of your foot - that's the shape the gusset fills in without over stretching the fabric. Those increases also determine the height of the back of the heel when decreasing in the the heel turn. I would love to show you how to knit backwards but that isn't a skill I have. I've tried but find my gauge changes and its just easier for me to turn my work.
I have made many socks, most all of them toe up, using Judy's majic cast on. For the. foot part I have just knit a tube and then a German Short Row Heal. Your pattern probable fits better, so I;m going to try it, but really my simple formula has worked just fine. Socks should fit close to the foot, but. not. too snug or loose. A high instep would require the. gusset.
I use a short row heel when I'm knitting with self stripping yarn because I prefer the look. But I find that even with my flat feet the short row heel slides down in my shoe a lot. It's all about trying different options until we what works best for us.
Can't wait to see the next video in this series!!
Thank you so much, now I understand it and dont have to Look it up everytime! The Visual is Great too 🎉
Happy to help!
Excellent choice of demo sweater, it’s so easy to see the different parts you are referencing! Can’t wait to see more of this series, great insights!
Thank you! I'll rotate sweaters throughout the series <3
i am so glad the algorithm gods sent me your video. I've been thinking about knitting a drop shoulder sweater bottom up and in the round. But my favorite book does not cover this construction, because, i guess, it is cannot be knit in the round fully. Now i don't have to figure it out through trial and error!
I'm so happy you found it and what great timing! I'm curious, what's your favorite book?
