Backspacing, flexure, sensor tilt = stretched stars?
Переглядів 3,6 тис.3 роки тому
I'm having issues with stretched stars using an Astro-tech AT72EDII and QHY 168c camera. I have tried both a Hotech flattener, and the Astro-tech flattener. I have tried several different backspacings. It seems I get the best results with somewhere around 73mm. The recommended spacing is around 57mm /- 4mm. What gives?

Using the EQ6R-Pro, Astro-tech AT72EDII, and QHY168c, I was able to get a decent image with under 2 hours of integration time. However, it seems that I have some tilt or sag in my imaging train that I still need to figure out.

I am having a similar issue. My next test is to se what I get without the field flattened. If the stars look all symmetric then I would guess it’s the flattener. If it’s to one side then it could be flexure or collimation. Have you rotated the camera to see which way the comma moves if at all?

Don’t know if that scope is worth all this. The flattener alone is probably 70% the cost of the scope. Better to just sell the scope and go with something better.

The four little grub screws are potentially lateral alignment adjustment, used at the factory to align the centers of corrector and secondary with the primary. My vintage Celestrons use cork shims. Lateral and rotational matching of the corrector is performed to get the wave error as low as possible and meet specifications.

The original axiom lx version had the same optics as explore scientific since joc made them for meade (series5000 uwa) and celestron (ax lx) before es existed. After several years of es being a budget option, joc decided to exclusively make es, raise prices to posture as a premium brand and celestron and meade had to go to different suppliers. The new meade 5.5uwa is absolutely excellent right on par with a nagler, but the larger luminos focal lengths do have issues. The meade 4 , 7 , 16 , 28mm ultrawides are the same as wo uwan and are really good I used to have the 23mm axiom lx and it was amazing. Es is a bit overpriced. I now have the orion versions of the 28uwa and 20xwa and they are better performers than the es82 30mm and es100 20mm

Whow, Eagle really came out great! I‘ve imaged it for the first time out of my backyard about two years ago. Of course with the 6SE on an Alt-Az mount barely able to take 15 second pictures and my daily dslr behind it there is no comparison. But still, when taking MANY of these 15 second pictures and do all the postprocessing-magic you can easily see those pillars of creation. And this always makes these crazy Hubble and JWST- mages so much more real to me. Nice video! Greetings from Switzerland where one rainstorm after the other makes my telescope getting covered with dust 😩😉

Great video! I have used both lines in my 12.5 f4.8 scope. The ES is the best bang for the buck, and the Luminos is not far behind, but they clearly shows aberrations. That said, people who say the “ring of fire” is awful are literal purists who want perfection to the edge of field. To my eye, the Luminos 10mm and 31mm are the best. And let’s be real: you are still getting 82° field of view. Most people like myself only care about the central field and don’t care about the extreme edge.

I too have the AT72EDII and the AT flattener/0.8 reducer. One thing I noticed watching your video, you are running the field flattener in to the 2” compression ring accessory holder (the black ring with the 3 thumb screws you mention). I removed the 2” compression ring accessory holder and screwed the flattener straight in to the rotator (red ridged ring) My back focus is working well at 55mm. I wonder if that would change the back spacing needed for you, as the flattener is picking up the image cone in a different place?

I'm 76 and have been an amateur astronomer since 1969 when I bought my first telescope. It was one of those 90mm "department store" refractors, but when I took it to the beach I fell in love with astronomy. The darkest sky I've seen was at a star party hosted by the Las Vegas Astronomy Club. We drove 150 miles to the northeast of Vegas and viewing with a bortle 2 sky was mind-boggling. The original owner of the 36" dobsonian "Yard Scope" was there and after I got nosebleed from climbing the absurdly high ladder, I saw the Horsehead Nebula in all its splendor. I am too old now to handle a decent size scope so I scan the sky with 70mm binoculars on an Orion Paragon mount. I applaud your choice of scopes and wish I still had the strength to handle one. Cheers!

Great video. I thought I would chime in with my recent experience. I have a William Optics Z73 with a William Optics Flat 73r flattener/0.8 reducer and struggled like you have. A friend suggested N.I.N.A. Hocus Focus Aberration Inspector. Great tool. It tells you if you need to increase or decrease your back focus and measures tilt. I dialed in my flattener in one evening. I ended have to adjust my flattener 1.7mm beyond the initial recommended. The initial recommended is for Crop Sensors and mine is a 4/3. I have no idea why that would make a difference. I ordered some Astrodymium tilt rings and adjusted my tilt. Problems solved quick and efficient.

Part of the reason was to try to get smaller stars with the L-enhance. Also, just wanting to test it out as I think I just recently got the filter at this time. While not needed for light pollution at this location, I wanted to see if it would improve contrast on this target using a OSC camera. I was pretty happy with the result. Hopefully I can get out to this spot again and try going filter-less!

Curious what the outcome would back to back (no filter or l-enhance). Subscribed to make sure I see a possible outcome.

My first mount was a Celestron AVX, it was OK for a beginner mount, but too small for the Edge 9.25. I upgraded to the EQ6R-Pro because it seemed to get lots of praise, with very few complaints. I'm very happy with it, but I would look at a CGX or CGX-L if I needed more payload.
