    You use Artisan, are your probes reacting like in a drum roaster? So you canm use the profiles 1:1 for drum roasting?

      Not sure, I understand the question, are you asking if I can transfer the roast profile to a drum roaster? If so then no, a drum roaster behaves quite differently than a fluid bed roaster, but it will help on how I’d like to develop a roast on my drum roaster.

      So it does not make sense to buy a fluid bed roaster for improving drum roasts. I will start with a low dose in my 1kg drum roaster and try to transform the data to a full load roast. I thought, there is a formula to translate a fluid curve into a drum profile. Useless hopes. So it could be only good for sensoric comparison. Thank you.

      It makes sense to buy a small roaster like this if you need/want to sample coffees as these are usually only sent in 50/100g bags. Also if you want to see how coffees taste with longer or shorter development profiles and of course if you only have modest requirements re output quantities and or limited space

      Hi Dylan, don’t roast on the Cormorant any more - have moved onto a 1.5kg Golden GR1+ The graph I posted had smoothing set too high. I have since changed my bean probes to RTD type as they are more accurate and less noisy. For a high grown African I would still chose a quick ish roast - but with a longer time to FC. I drop most of my coffee between 1.50mins to 2.20 mins past FC and I’d definitely be trying to avoid that flick at the end.

Such a bloat of theory out there but these have been really practical and helpful. Interesting to close off the diffuser at FC - I will try this next roast. I'm trying to avoid soft crashes after FC.

    I got about 20 roasts out of my first Nano 7 (US Version) and then the thermostat broke. They quickly sent me a replacement and it broke on the first roast. I'm hoping third times a charm. The 220 versions have been out for awhile but it may be too soon to know if the 120v version is reliable.

    Hi, just out of curiosity: how do you make a connection from Kaffelogic to your PC directly? I was thinking about something similar e.g. using a PC as kind of USB drive emulator and try to read in real time log files, but I can see you have it sorted already :D

      You can’t make a connection directly at the moment. I have added some additional probes which I have running through the Mastech and then into the laptop - one could also use a phidgets. There are plans to introduce a Bluetooth module for the internal bare wire thermocouple which controls the PID, to provide live data in Kaffelogic Studio in the future. However I don’t think this will happen until after the rollout of the new chaff collector.

    What did you find using external probe? Is it consistent with the onboard probe?

      The Onboard’s primary function is to control the PID and has been designed to be highly responsive. The external probe is less responsive but gives an easier curve to read an provides a real time roasting curve. Kaffelogic will bring out a Bluetooth module at some point which should give a real-time curve.

      @@beanobsessedroasters9073 by looking at the placement of the external probe, maybe it should read the ET, and the onboard reading BT. That's my guess, im having a modded popcorn popper that have similar setup using 2 probes, BT & ET.

    Hi, on what size of baskets are you using the twister? Do you know, if the propeller blade can be set deep enough to work properly in a 20g VST that is 26mm in hight or even in a 22g VST that is 28mm in hight? Many thanks in advance for your feedback and with well caffeinated regards, Andreas

      Only just seen your query - I use on 18g VST basket, but it looks like at least 26mm height would be achievable. As you twist the coffee will keep being compressed, so even with deeper baskets most of the depth will have distribution, though at say, 30mm height the bottom few mm might only be compressed and not distributed by the propeller - hope that helps

    Hi mate. I been watching your Cormorant Coffee roaster video’s. I note you have changed now. I currently roast on a Gene cafe and am looking to upgrade and have been looking at the Cormorant and running it with artisan to learn more about roasting and improve the consistency of my roasts. With hindsight what is your opinion of the CR600 as a learning / development roaster?

    I own a Roast Vision. Great little tool, consistent measuring. Most affordable electronic tool. Still not cheap, but also very helpful for calibrating your roasts.

    How does it determine when the roast is done? Does the profile have a particular development % it needs to hit? Can different profiles have different parameters that need to be hit for it to stop? Seems like a really cool machine!

      It determines a roast is done by a set bean temperature, either preset in the profile or user adjusted in the profile software. The roast level setting adjusts this end temperature. You can manually set what end temps correspond with the roast levels.

    Is this lower area of the roaster all that needs to be cleaned? What about the drum area does that need to be disassembled and cleaned as part of the regular maintenance every four or five roasts?

      The lower area needs to be cleaned probably every 20 roasts or so, depends on your roasting style. Never clean the drum. However for a deep clean further disassembly is required, all very straight forward though, unless you are completely ham fisted.

      Like any “cooking” the darker you go the more smoke you get. I’m in the light to medium camp - so don’t really see much smoke - especially as they’re 100g batches. However I’d always advocate ventilation of some sort. I use mine under the cooker hood works fine.

      With the greatest respect Sid - this is a light filter roast of a natural process - Ugandan. I don’t expect the colour to be uniform with this bean. People who judge roasts by sight, have no clue. This roast had nearly 2 minutes post 1st crack development, with an end temp of 215c and an overall roast time of 9.30 minutes - plenty. Had I roasted this for Espresso/Mokka Pot - I would have developed it further.

      You can connect the roaster using a special lead and the existing thermocouples - but I have chosen to install my own more accurate RTD and K -types and use Phidgets.

      @@itamarkas It depends on which model you buy, I you watch my video closely you will see that is uses a damper system. You should probably contact your local distributor or speak to manufacturer - as they can be configured to work either way.

      the ocd is good but it only flattens the top layer. the lower layers are not evenly distributed. so the even distribution is quiet superficial.

      @@e5211 it's been a year since posting and after all the fancy tools I'm back to a chopstick with a few acupuncture needles taped to the end and a 58.5mm piston tamp. I can consistently make great espresso this way.

      @@e5211 about 2 weeks ago I went from sewing needles to acupuncture one's. Wish I did it earlier as there was a huge difference. They actually settle and fluff the puck much more efficiently. Worth the $5 off ebay.

    In each video you use a different charge temperature. Does that depend on the kind of bean you're roasting, environment temp or are you just experimenting?

      Charge temp - will vary according to charge weight, bean density/size, altitude it was grown at, moisture content, ambient temperature and also the desired length of roast.

    Phil - I think I am now the owner of this machine after missing out on it the first time :). How did the upgraded burner change your roasting technique? I find that I need to start reducing the gas quite early and much further than in your video, otherwise the roast is too fast - it'd be good to know what changes you made in your approach. I've only done 4 roasts on it so far after upgrading from a Gene, so this is all new to me. Amazing machine and very helpful videos, thanks!

      @@beanobsessedroasters9073 thank you. i currently have an air roaster and ready to upgrade. was considering a small step, like the behmor or the gene.....maybe the hottop. but the cormorant seems to check all the boxes and overcome shortcomings of the 'cheaper' ones (albeit 2x the price of the hottop). is there a blog site where i can post some newbie questions about this roaster? nothing beats real world experience.

    great video! i was researching my next roaster and ran across this one. it's 2x my stretch budget, but man it looks amazing and checks all the boxes. it appears the cleaning is pretty straight forward, tho you'd think they'd make it a little easier to disassemble (like 'quick disconnects-type fasteners' instead of all the screws...but then, i gather the full breakdown isn't required that often). again, thanks for this!

      Yes - for the price - though can’t guarantee calibration. Did pick up on a batch of Indonesian green I had that was roasting oddly - which turned out to have a moisture content of 13.5%!

I just stumbled upon it through youtube recommendations. The only reason I mentioned it is that interested people get to see a bit more content about this roaster. I do appreciate you posting this video and think it's a pity you won't be making more videos. This equipment doesn't get enough coverage on youtube IMO.
