Red-shouldered Hawks harass Red-tailed Hawk in Arcata, CA
Переглядів 1012 роки тому
A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks began harassing a Red-tailed Hawk at Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary in Arcata, CA. One red-shouldered hawk flew in to this group of trees and began vocalizing. The red-tailed hawk became agitated and moved to a nearby tree. Another red-shouldered hawk began vocalizing nearby and flew into the area. The red-shouldered hawks then began swooping the red-tailed. Th...

The vigilance behaviors of the California Scrub-Jay
Переглядів 4,4 тис.3 роки тому
This video was made for the Independent Creative Project in Animal Behavior class. I used various videos from the Macaulay Library alongside some of my own footage to create this project. I also used tracks from the Planet Earth and Planet Earth 2 scores by Hans Zimmer. I also used footage of Scrub-Jays harassing squirrels from the Simply Seth UA-cam channel.

    i have a pair of Scrubs that i feed Unsalted Peanuts. They are brave to get close enough to me where i can reach out and pet them if i wanted and they don't get scared. Less than a week of feeding them to gain their trust.

    very cool, I have a couple in my yard that I feed. Today three little juvenile birds came up to my seed area and were looking around trying to eat. I was surprised to see them and then the Jay swooped from above and frightened them away. I was disappointed to but I'm glad the know where there food comes from.

    Scrub Jays like me because I give them roasted salt-free peanuts in the shell which they love.

    Nothing funnier than a molting jay with a bald head.

      My scrub-jay friend has a bald head. I assumed he had been in a tussle. What's this about molting?

      @@JiveDadson Adult jays periodically molt their head feathers and look pretty self-conscious until it grows back.

      Well, my buddy Scrubby is handsome with his bald head.

    • @jsmcguireIII
      @jsmcguireIII Рік тому

      @@JiveDadson Could be something other than a molt phase if he remains bald. There are avian diseases and conditions that might be a concern. If you get a good zoomed image and post it there are biologists who might have better information. We have several fledged jays hanging around now and their feathers are fluffier and lighter in color than their darker and sleeker parents.

    I’m lucky enough to have both Scrub and Stellar jays in my back yard; I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills. They are by far the most entertaining birds I’m lucky enough to see every day. The interaction between the jays and the Western gray squirrels is always fun to watch. Nice video, thank you. 😊

    I've befriended the ones in my area. They follow me on hikes and warn me of any approaching predators or people. Smart enough to know my face, tell my husky apart from the coyotes they dive on, and even recognize my vehicle. It's an honor to have earned their trust.

    Scrub Jay's are terrorizing my dogs, the squirrels, and ruining our car mirrors and windows!! I close the car side mirrors and cover them, and the 2 birds get the covers off and/or still peck the covered mirrors! They are so scratched up! They peck at everything, waking us up constantly with the sound and their loud chirps as well. We have a huge loquat tree in our yard, it's as tall as our 2 story home, and they nest there yearly. Any suggestions on how to keep them from nesting in our tree?

    I just saw a painted Bunting in our backyard here in Beaverton, late May 2022. I thought I was looking at an escaped pet bird because he was so colorful and flew pretty close to me. Came to the internet to identify him and your video has helped me, Thank you. That is definitely the bird I saw.

    your video was great! I have a California Scrub Jay, I have raised her since she was a hatchling that had fallen from the nest. she gives me joy every day... she is so intelligent! I really wish I could set her free but I'm sure she wouldn't fare well. I have done quite a bit of research and it all seems to come down to the same answer. what are your thoughts?

    • @russellcampbell4727
      @russellcampbell4727 3 роки тому

      While this isn't something I have personal experience in this kind of situation is something I've thought about when hearing stories of rescued birds that become pets of some sort. The strict legal answer would be to release the bird. However, you make a good point that the bird may not have the survival skills necessary at this point. It is a tough choice to make either way. If you decide to release the bird maybe start slowly and give them a safe space to return to. They may continue to stay nearby while also having a chance to explore their natural habitat. If you decide to keep the bird in the same manner make sure they have room to fly and they are properly fed. Conduct research on the diet of Scrub-jays. They are not animals in the pet trade so there will not be much reliable information on how to care for them. If something like this were to happen in the future bring the young animals to a wildlife rehab and encourage others to do the same if they find injured or vulnerable wildlife. If you would like my email to ask any more questions let me know!

      That is so awesome! Wilson is a beautiful bird and it is really cool that he decided to settle down in your backyard for the winter. Painted Buntings are incredibly rare in Oregon and a lot of birders have been going crazy about him! I hope to get better video of him in the future if I can swing by the area when the lighting is nice. My brother and I go to Oregon State University and we work closely with the Natural History Museums on campus. If Wilson has you guys more interested in the biodiversity of Oregon and the U.S. your family is welcome to come see the awesome bird, fish, and mammal specimens we have on campus! You can email me at campberu@oregonstate.edu if you all would ever like a tour!
