Off Grid Life w/ over 60 Alpacas!🦙⛰️🌈🌎
We are Dave & Nicole Wiegman!
We raise Alpacas off grid in Arizona.
We hand process all the alpaca fiber ourselves sustainably! And transform it into beautiful wearable art & other functional items through the ancient technique known as Wet Felting!
We are 15 miles down a dirt road w/ no neighbors & we are heading into our 4th year off grid together! We have no well - so we harvest rainwater! We have solar in our dwelling & in the barn! We rely on our wood stove to keep us warm!
We have been building our farm from scratch on 47 acres of raw land - every structure you see was built by us!
In the last few years we have grown our alpaca herd into one of the largest high quality herds in the Southwest! We raise, breed & sell alpacas as our main source of income as homesteaders!

Thank you for this video. It is nice to see another alpaca farmer making felt with their fleeces. I am based in Australia. What type and size of drum carder do you use?
❤
After the rinse in the vinegar bath, did the vest smell like vinegar? Also, did you squeeze it out before laying it down to dry? Thank you.
Loved this! Thank you!

Hi Rachel! I had to take a break. Been so busy building a new sheep barn. I will start posting again soon. Be sure to check our instagram cause I post often over there @starflower_eco_farm 💜
Fun to watch, it would be great to see the process up close. Both the carding and the spinning. You look very relaxed while doing these processes! How nice!
Buen día felicitaciones por su trabajo
Thank you 🙏

Can you recommend a source for a hat block? Or do you make your own?
Hi! Hatshapers.com is a great site for plastic hat forms.
I just found this video and love the vest. It appears you have used only the longer fibers for the vest. Have you ever done this with the shorter neck fibers, perhaps fiber under 2" in length? Thank you for posting the video. I'll be watching for more.
Hi! Thank you for watching! I don’t usually use shorter fibers - they don’t go thru my carder very well. But you can definitely felt them. It might take a little bit longer cause of the shorter length. But they should felt fine.
You are both so inspiring, love it ❤❤
Thank you!
I'm a spinner and here's a tip. To remove your finished batt from the large drum, (and to clean both the drum and licker after you're finished), use a metal tined hair brush cleaning tool to loosen it as you go, and this will change your world.
Thank you so much!
So happy to have this done! Up next we are building Earthen Barn for the sheep & lambs! Subscribe now and watch our spring projects unfold!❤
This vest turned out so good! One of the nicest I’ve made for sure! Lmk if you have any questions! Thank you for watching!

The day after checking the sheep we had our first ram lamb born, followed by another one the next day! They are so handsome! Check out the community tab for pics! And hit that subscribe button! Thank you!
How much fiber can this carder hold?
The biggest I’ve made so far are 7oz batts 😱
If they don't dry the babies themselves wouldn't that affect things in the wild or are alpacas not something that exist in the wild?
Alpacas have been domesticated for over 4,000 years. They wouldn’t survive in the wild without their human companions. Their wild ancestors are called vicuña. And still live in the Andean region in South America.
Last thing i expected to see on UA-cam reels today was alpacas rawdoggin
lol 🦙🦙🦙
What do you do with them? Can you eat them? They look like they dont have alot of meat...
We don’t eat them and most people in the US don’t. We raise them for their super luxurious sustainable fiber.
Did a jumbo sheep just gave birth to a full grown dog?!
lol these are alpacas. They are the most luxurious fiber producers on earth.
We have nearly 70 alpacas on our off grid farm! We have babies every spring and fall! Our females are due starting April 1st! Hit that subscribe button now for lots of baby action coming up soon!

Not sure what you mean lol

Oh! It’s ok! Thank you for your feedback! Grateful you are here!

Adding soapy water & friction to natural fibers causes the microscopic scales on the fiber to become tangled up! Forming a natural durable fabric! Possibly the first fabric humans ever made!😱 Subscribe if you love art & resiliency!

Thank you so much! Grateful you are here to witness our journey!
That's so sad poor little sheep you are literally letting their tails brought off by cutting off a blood supply shame on you
Hi! I understand that it makes you sad but I have done plenty of self reflection and research before proceeding with this practice and it felt like it was in alignment with our beliefs. It has been 6 days and the lambs have shown absolutely no signs or symptoms of pain. They are house lambs so they live inside and I have observed them closely watching for any discomfort. But they are still their wild little selves. The banding has not altered their behavior at all. So I hold no shame here. I stand in integrity with the choice that we made. Thank you
Awwwww they’re adorable! Thank you for the explanation as well, you learn something new every day!
Thank you Dark Cherry! 🐑🐑❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Subscribe! And learn about off grid learning, fiber animals, fiber processing & art! Thank you!
These are the first two lambs we have on our farm! We did the banding 6 days and they have shown no signs or symptoms of pain at all. They are house lambs so I have been able to observe them closely. Before proceeding with this practice we did plenty of self reflection & research and we felt it was in alignment with our beliefs. Thank you for subscribing and watching! We have two more ewes that should be having their lambs any day!
I use a porcupine quill to lift fibres from the teeth on the drum. I believe that the doffer tool can damage both the cloth and the tines. The batt is absolutely dreamy and I love the way the colours blended. I love alpaca fibre 🥰🥰🙏🏼
That’s great advice! Thank you!
So soothing to watch you working with the fiber! 😌
Glad you like it Carol!
Thank you for sharing!🙂
Your welcome! Happy to! I love my carder so much!
Mary had two little lambs, who's fleece was white as snow. They would have followed her to school that day, in hopes of learning too. But jumped and ran in paca coats all new, because that is what they like to do. 😂🤣
Lol 😆😁 They are so fun!
Cuteness overload right there 😅
He’s my favorite!😍😍😍
