This is a view of the inside of a Jones Motorola rev counter, it is a fairly simple governor system, and one that i have recently rebuilt after a catastrophic failure. I think the instrument is fitted to a historic racing car. I hope you enjoy the video and please leave a comment,
Governor spring comparator, for Smiths Governor speedometers
Переглядів 1784 роки тому
I have quite a number of various unidentified Smiths governor springs and I have made this simple device to help me try and work out what spring is what. My quest to find out a bit more about the smiths governors it fairly long term, any comments or advice would be welcome, thank you for watching
Smiths governor speedometer testing device
Переглядів 7824 роки тому
I made this device initially to test repaired governor shafts to see if they vibrate at given speeds and to make sure that the governor mechanism worked properly. I then decided to add a pointer to the tester to see if I could plot the movement and also work out angular distances for a given speed, this device is very much work in progress. I hope you enjoy it, comments are welcome.
Short video on the early Smiths speedometer dial

In this video I have a close look at the speedometer dial from the early Smiths speedometer. There are a few pencil marks on the reverse of the dial and also some interesting small drillings on the front of the dial. I hope you enjoy the videos.
Second video of three showing the disassembly of very early Smiths speedometer
Переглядів 8334 роки тому
This is the second of three videos I have made showing the disassembly and inspection of a very early Smiths speedometer. I suspect that while the speedometer is marked Smiths it was possibly made by the firm Nichole Nielsen, who later became Watford Speedometers and was owned by North Brothers.

Was this working, I have the same speedo that has stopped working I have taken it apart come to the conclusion that the magnet has lost its pulling strence
It was working and is still working! why do you think the magnet has lost its strength?
Hi it’s from my 1961 AJS the speedo stopped working I tryed it with a cordless drill the magnet rotated but it doesn’t pull the disc round
Thank you. Will carry on -and hopefully get it working again🤞
No proper lighting
@Mike- I have seen a Smiths speedo 120mph with no trip meter or no made in England written in back cover. Mechanism inside is magnetic and looks correct. Wonder if Smiths did make such examples with no trip with a case with just that wheel emblem with no made in england etched. Any info would be gratefully appreciated
Great video - very clear
Very helpful thank you. My speedo and odometer have both stopped working on my Sunbeam S7 (with the speedo stuck at 40mph??). So I guess I’m going to have to strip it down to try and fix it...
I have a 50 year old ford truck speedometer that needs magnetized, do you do this through your shop?
Hi. how do you now that the magnet is not working correctly?
Speedometer cable was replaced, no difference. Mechanic said the speedometer needed to be remagnetized.
what causes the cup to spin? It is made of aluminum. is there any ferrous metal on the cup that causes it to spin?
It's due to something called eddy currents, which cause the ally drag cup to be pulled around by the magnet, I hope you enjoyed the video.
Can these speedometers be recalibrated? Thanks
Yes they can
Great job Mike ... thanks
For whom the bell tolls! Great video.
That is the secret, getting it apart is easy , putting it back together is a bit more tricky...
did you give it him back in bits like that too?
you make it look easy mike thanks .
