*awkward scene occurs* erm...this is awkward
The Snyder Cut is peak cinema EDIT: I am hoping, praying that the James Gunn “Superman” movie doesn’t have any Marvel-style humour.
Late to the party here but I just got this recommended and I happened to watch Godzilla -1.0 last night. That movie takes itself seriously 100% of the time it was honestly so refreshing.
Thankyou for choosing Parasite as your No 1. it is my favourite movie :)
I suggest listening to David Foster Wallace’s commentary on tv culture and irony in cinema. We’ve actually outgrown this…Until TikTok caused this generation to de-evolve into collective brain rot, and now they prefer cancer to art.
My guess is, that this is just a style that's modern right now, but not here to stay. Give it a decade and it will be so stale, that the movie industry (esp. hollywood) will have to find the next thing. I am very optimistic about the artform not degrading from this, because if humans are passionate about something, then it is story telling. When the quip is no longer profitable, we will be back at immersive stories in no time :)
Im not the only one who made a video about this. I FEEL SEEN!
5:01 Nerd culture, aka goyslop.
Your sweater is giving major Fleabag here and I'm obsessed with the irony 😭
EEAAO is way too high.
This way of thinking is equivalent to the "cool" kid in school dismissing anyone who enjoys learning or education as cringe because of their sincerity and effort. After all, it's "cool not to care." It's unfortunate, really. I'm tired of every character sounding like Tony Stark or Deadpool. It struck me the hardest while I was watching Avengers: End Game. You could take any line of dialogue, give it to any character, and it wouldn't change a beat because every character sounded and acted the same.
If the attempt was for me to feel less goofy they failed. Those jokes have made me stop watching movies on the spot. Especially if I was getting into it. No one in real life talks like this and it takes me way out of it. I love Metal Gear because everyone takes their wacky situation very seriously. To them this is a real situation and they don't look at the camera and wink.
I blame Ryan Reynolds.
I was recently thinking about a similar line that I think is overused. Main characters finds themselves in a situation where things get a little hectic. They involuntarily get involved in the chaos and just after it finally dies down, camera zooms in on one of the character’s faces and they say, “I’m too old for this sh*t.”
I remember seeing a picture of Paul riding a Sandworm with the caption “okay now how do I get off this thing?”
These movies forget that you have to earn these moments of relief in tension only after applying tension and weight with sincerity.
Never before has a single one of these movies that tosses banter around to make fun of everything in the movie every minute ever given me a hard-hitting emotional impact like sincere works have. Arcane, an incredibly sincere work of art, really hit me. Whiplash, a beautifully shot movie, had a big impact. But that can’t happen if they remind you “hey we’re in a movie!” after everything that happens.
This is a problem beyond just movies. Being sincere and heartfelt in any way is now seen as cringe, especially by young people, and this hurts the emotional depth and awareness of people.
Thank you. I’d always cringed at these movies Marvel/DC churn out. Now I have the validation. Too many people I deal with, have this blunt, unserious reaction to anything resembling reflection in their lives and see depth as a threat to their existence, to be met by wry, reductive remarks. “Bro, it’s just a movie. I bet your fun at parties ha” 🙄
Appreciate the video! I agree with your take on this, and I think the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie handled this style pretty well. Less so the second one, though, which l thought was a little more obviously formulaic.
I don't recall 2017's "Wonder Woman" being overly quippy and self-referential, and that came between "Dawn of Justice" and "Justice League" and managed to be a success. Why do so many filmmakers learn the wrong lessons?
Ngl this part was hilarious 4:49 - 4:53 😂
It’s also not surprising that a lot of these franchises are now struggling to retain audiences after spending more than a decade training them that being genuinely invested is uncool.
“They fly now?!” “They fly now.” 😑
It's meant to make the characters more relatable, remind the audience that the characters in the story have the same capacity to be surprised or impressed by the events of the plot as they do. But it's also highly transparent, barely one step removed from smiling and winking at the camera, and the logic falls apart in superhero stories where the characters SHOULD be comfortable and experienced in weird situations. Dr. Strange, The Sorcerer Supreme, should never have to say "Illumi-what-y?" in a universe where Dan Brown novels exist.
Thanks for putting words to something that always bothered me but I couldn’t say why. I started disliking marvel movies after avengers and when people asked why I put it down to not liking team ups. That reasoning fell apart when I watched guardians and really loved it. Thanks for putting it so clearly.
there are movies i can't can't can't watch because they do this CONSTANTLY. joss whedon does it, rian johnson does it, and every time i just roll my eyes so hard i slide off the couch. which is wild because firefly is still one of my favorite shows of all time. i guess that goes to show that it's fine when it's done with a plan in mind and not because "it's the current style".
It worked in the new Sonic movie for some reason.
"The movie takes itself too serious" was the sentence that ruined it all
Maybe this is the reason people liked Deadpool and Wolverine so much
I feel like this is linked to people needing to be drunk to have fun at parties.
Batman V Superman is ridiculously over-hated. It’s fine if you don’t like the movie or it’s not your cup of tea, but the hate it gets is too much. That movie didn’t do well critically because it’s not a Marvel film and wasn’t rainbows and sunshine. Simple as that. People got used to Marvel films because they were digestible, unserious, and most importantly they were Facebook mom approved. Zack Snyder took the DC characters to a status of legend and mythology that treated them like they were gods, which is how those characters would be seen as in the real world. People who read comics and love these characters know of their importance and while Marvel makes them look ridiculous l, Snyder wanted to show them as you thought they looked as a kid, gods.
No it is dumb idea to kill off Superman and do Doomsday in the second movie he is in lol
tbh that's why I mostly enjoy the 'weird horror' movies that usually pop out from a24 or similar indy-ish movies. Oddity, Caveat, the VVitch, the Lighthouse, Hereditary, Midsommar, Saint Maude etc. They can do the most without having to rely on dumb jokes that break the 4th wall.
I've been thinking about/feeling this for some time now, and it really irritates me..... everything is like this now, it's so rare to find things that don't incorporate this undercut humor style, it has tarnished my enjoyment of a lot of media...... this has even bled into like 90%+ of modern anime...... I hate it so much and I blame the success of Guardians of the Galaxy for it
When a character says "listen to me, I sound like someone in a bad movie", they're not wrong. they're definitely in a bad movie
It started earlier, but I first realized it was a thing with the first Dr Strange film. It's the serious "suiting up " scene, he throws on the cloak of levitation, stares into the mirror, and the cloak starts to wipe away dirt and he swats it away. Because we can't have a simple scene conveying "I'm taking this seriously now." No, it has to be a joke.
Purposeful infantilization. Average kid is a snarky cunt and they think that's being clever.
If LOTR was made today: Never thought I'd die side by side with an elf. How about side by side with a friend? Aye, i can do that Pippin: oh will you two just get a room
“wow, that joke was so witty and ironic bro, now say something beautiful and true” please. at this point i can’t even read western webcomics because they’re constant,y ruining their own immersion to make sure you’re not making fun of them TT
I wonder though if "that happened" could be used in a good way
"well that just happened" Yeah we know, you put it in your movie!
they're all trying to be like shrek, but even shrek respected its universe to a degree and was creative
Emotional detachment is what so many people think strength and resilience looks like. The escapism is probably why the movies are so popular. Its funny to me that audiences dont recognize their need for this bizarre coping mechanism as a symptom of their fragility.
One of my singular biggest critiques of our modern western culture (especially on social media) is that sarcasm and insincerity is the default. Frankly, totally toxic behavior is completelt normalized because it's "funny". I fear that people are going to forget what empathy or understanding is.
That’s why i can’t stand a lot of marvel anymore bc it literally ruins something
It all started with Bugs Bunny constantly winking to the audience
Mate, love the video but please do pull the camera out a bit, just a touch too personal methinks
Please blink more often
Hollywood goes for the money. The real question is: why are people so uncomfortable with sincerity, depth, drama and love and tenderness that they need to hide under the silly fat joke
I absolutely never watch marvel shot for many years. I loved how humour was dark, and how there was joy and sadness and real emotional moments as well as long awaited action confrontations. Today it’s all goofy and without any weight. I didn’t enjoy this as a kid and I don’t enjoy it as an old ass adult
