Game Dev Blog -Subnet- Desktop Version 1
This is my initial test with the Desktop of the Hacking Simulator. I'm trying to emulate a Linux feel for the user interface. I think I will be incorporating more terminal like feelings for the end product.
I just created the botnet tracker widget on the left. The squares are placeholder graphics. This widget is intended to indicate how many slave systems you have in your swarm. They will give your Hacking actions more protection and make some of them actions stronger.
I think I'll be working on an interface and early Mission board system next.

This is a video showing my progress on the main menu for my in progress game "Subnet" a hacking simulator. The game is inspired from the games UPLINK and HackNet. I hope to borrow from both those games and improve upon the hacking simulator formula and tell interesting stories.

We make another trip into the asteroid belt searching for rare ores. We're looking to get some Xhalium or Corazium which is needed for producing ships back at stations. We're going to go further than we have before, and hopefully not run out of fuel!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but we worked rather hard to prevent deaths. Unfortunately this one was unexpected, but there was no going back. I did lose the commentary on the first mission, I think the next episode may have some lost audio as well, but should be fully working in Episode 15 and further. Let me know if you'd rather just cut it out or leave it in without commentary.

We're doing it, we're going after the Alien Base in the United Kingdom. We're going to go nice and slow to prevent any horrible mistakes. We'll take the fatigue hit if playing extra cautious gets us through with minimal injuries and no casualties.

Would you be able to put a slider or hinge on a YOLOL code to auto close after 30 secs or so?
Yep. You can have a yolo chip set the slider/hing value to the desired value. Having it wait 30s is a bit more complicated. You'd have to create a variable check its value and increment to count time. There should be examples of that online.
yah my door still doesnt work, its so fustrating. buttons dont work, hindges are kinda hidden away so i have to use buttons... BUT it doesnt work so im flat out fustrated
The threw biggest issues are: make sure it is connected to network. #2 make sure you are setting the state value of the door. #3 make sure you are in toggle mode for the button. Other wise you have to hold the button to see a change, and pressing won't effect a visible change in the door.

It seems you could probably use doors to protect windows or maybe even the cockpit glass if you were taking a lot of hits.
is the mining job instanced? can all the bays be full of people using them?
Instanced, just like the ship designer.
Can you stack multiple hinges/sliders? Like a hinged door on top of another hinged door to make an unfolding wing-like thing?
You could have an unpowered hing or slider (using handle). Power wouldn't normaly work. However you may be able to do some wire wizardry to get it to work in stages.

I applied for close alpha access and was lucky enough to get selected. The game will be available for everyone starting July 29th!
how much can a Hinger move? how much plates can i put?
I think there is a limit to the amount of mass that it can move. The more mass attached, the slower it moves. What that limit is, I do not know at this time.

I haven't heard of that one before. I'll key my eye on it. I know for sure I'm interested in getting Xenonauts 2 once it is released.

They do have torpedo's that can be guided by by laser; as far as like heat seeking style lock and fire, I don't know.

I like a lot of the things I have seen. It reminds me a lot of starbound, but in first person. I really hope though the direct controls for ships is not a bunch of bottoms and levers, it would kill it for me if you can not set up some kind of traditional interface when piloting.
Just wondering, are these ships that have degened from battle, or are they procedurally generated? (In the repair job)

how to install LW update? i didnt know there are updates to it.
I'm using Long War Rebalance which changes up the balance of long war but is not made by the orginal LW creators. You install LW as per the instructions, then download the latest version of LWR and install.
It's been forever since I last watched any Long War stuff, good to see there's still people playing it. and MAN does Rebalance seem to change quite a bit. One thing I'd like to mention though, your voice is pretty quiet. Or rather, the video as a whole is sort of quiet. I have to turn up my audio quite a bit past what I normally have it as to hear you clearly.
Thanks for the feed back! My guess is that i forgot to check the position of my Mic. I've been trying to take note that it is positioned well before recording going forward.
but the small plates having less health then bigger plates right?
When I did a few experiments in the editor, Small vs large didn't matter. Each plate could take the same amount of shots before failing. I may re-do the experiments some time soon to confirm, perhaps I am miss-remembering the results.

good episode If you remember, can you tell me why at 46:10 you didn't send Calvin Mercer to flank the glitched sectoid and end the mission on that turn?
Since it was glitched I couldn't figure out how to get a flanking shot. So i just moved in closer to box it in. I tried with the scout but it claimed it was in cover.
@@dukegrimm2358 Hey thanks for the quick response! I should probably clarify what I was talking about. Here's a screenshot imgur.com/Ngw5xOu. Clearly the scout didn't flank because the invisible cover was between the sexoid and the scout. You can tell from the way the sexoid was leaning against it. But you then could've sent the PFC Mercer beyond that invisible wall on the same side as the sex-toid, and as long as you're on an adjacent tile to the enemy, it will always count as a flank shot even if there is another wall between the two units.
Yeah that probably could have worked. I just played it safe rather than risk it glitching more and leaving the rookie exposed.

Agreed, maybe reduce the amount of drag they have so it's easier for them to drift away.

I thought it was small too. Brutal dont recall the version. Should be the version before current. It was Alien Lv 3 not sure if that affects it.

In the menu with the selection of the difficulty of the game you have the version (at the top of the page). one of the reasons for which I stopped the game in this modification are the recent changes - on the mission of the alien base attack - command pod (last) - which is true at the alien level 3 ... 5 outsider in total about 150hp, attacks after 20dmg, acc 150 , regen +4 per turn, DR 4. From then on, I was just curious what madness Ucross had prepared ... after 1.5h save / load I was able to go through. Only to finish the adventure after 2 missions, because it was impossible to win. The author himself once banned me for constructive criticism - so I'm not going to give him feedback. Additionally, on a brutal level a few days later, the same story on an alien base attack - alien level 3 - 5 Oustiders (over 100hp) 2 sectoid commander. Sqad wipe after mission restoration with 6 double tap snipers and 2 scouts - I made it. I wonder when Ucross will forbid you to have several soldiers of the same class. It is thanks to my stream and my clever tactic which he called exploid that made it impossible to use more than 1 shove. GLHF Either way, I strongly recommend you not to update the modification as it is.

Btw Duke the slider can go both ways since it can go between 100 and -100 same thing for some hinges too. Exept hinges are in degrees so 360° to -360° in theory.

For a change at an impossible level ... at alien level 3 during the attack of the alien base, each time the last pod charged me - x4 Outsider every 60hp 20dmg. And AI aliens seemed very good ... aliens focused their attack on 1 soldier, flanked quite a lot, mindfrey spam killed at least 1 soldier
It used to be a melee vs 4 Outsider ... it was a deadly breakout fight. Now 3 rounds in a row do NOTHING ... embarrassing alien AI ... it was enough for them to run into a group of soldiers and ... CCS to wipe the court. Embarrassing AI!
Yeah that is true, but man when they hit, they hit HARD. The regen also makes it really hard to grind them down if they are in full cover.
You don't think that aliens generally flank themselves, behave hauntedly, run away in dangerous situations for player or do not take any action. How would the creator of the modification want to help / let go of the players in difficult situations. Good work !

It is ironman campanion?
Bronzeman Mode, so far at least. Only mission I've restarted so far has been the Swarming Abduction mission. Had a really bad initial encounter with the pods on that mission.
Are you gonna make alloy shivs and MECs in the future campaign?
MECs should be coming up soon. We just finished Alien Computers. I think I'm going to get Thin Man Interrogation and Adv Beam lasers first. Then I'll definitely start on making some MECs, by the hopefully we'll have some higher level characters to move over to MEC to help boost it's starting stats. Alloy shivs aren't available until after you take home some Mectoid cores if I recall correctly, and they don't show up till alien Lv 5 I think. So still a good number of months out. Definitely will make some when I can though.

I guess you say you'll skip fiew mission. In LW ry, you only fight against one thing and you should focus 100% of your attention on that - alien level. I suggest that you read about it in Wikipedia and, most importantly, learn about the alien level formula. Thanks to that you will know that on such a high level of difficulty you need to have 2 alien base assault done and be close to gasuss technology before it hits the 5 alien level.Alien level 5 ... is a turning point - a huge leap in difficulty.
March 14 and all soldiers are tired .... you still don't see that you need twice as many soldiers ... I would already restart the campaigns. March, April, May are the easiest months ... when the alien level is 10 - you will have a 3sectopod on scaut ufo. Mution elite or outsider leader scores 20-30dmg. 1 Cyberdisk(ignore caver and deal 12dmg twice and have sentinel) an alien base assault can kill the entire sqad - and this one must be attacked in June at the latest - May preferred - the attack base itself lasts 40-80 turns so you have exhausted 8 soldiers for 30+ days.
It's still the first month, except for abduct/request rewards there is no way to get more troops. Even if I use all my starter credits on recruits I'd still only get maybe three by end of month.

and the best part is listen ... the first cyberdisc I encountered in the campaign had: reaction fire, two attacks then automatically get overwath sentinel ... DR r6 ... dmg 12....and this on clasic dif the author is on the forum, but for constructive and substantive criticism he bans ...
So you can catch the reference point: my campaign will end in June: under 5berseker in one pod on abdaction, 8chrisalid 5 tinman 4zombie in 1 round on police station terror
As for the advice ... I regret to recommend restarting the campaign. I already told you in the first season, invest in soldiers. Your bottleneck is the number of soldiers ... and there is no time to train new ones. Your campaigns will be destroyed by staff shortages and diseases. You will skip many missions, which will only increase the "alien level". The first mission of terror is information about what awaits you in the future ... rather than a huge challenge. Think what the mission would look like if you activated 2 under cheisalid at the same time ... and on the terror police station map it often activates everything in the 2nd turn because there are few walls ... so aliens can see each other. The brutal level is proty for the first 3 months ... then it looks rather impossible. Mainly for the cause of the activation.
