Let's Just Rewrite This Mess... | Story Critique Playthrough of Jak 3

Some friends and I are in the process of rewriting Jak 3, and for research, I decided to play through the game on stream, and take notes of poor writing decisions, and potential ideas to improve them. This video is the cut down version of those streams. Please keep in mind that I love this game, so the snarky comments and flippant insults towards the game are not out of malice, it's out of love...

Reviewing My "Jak II's Hidden Depth" Video

This is a video I did back in 2020, and at the time, I had no idea it would do as well as it did, currently being my second most viewed video. Since then, I've received a lot of praise from fans of Jak 2 who found the video helpful, but also a lot of comments poking holes in my arguments. Some of which, were actually constructive and somewhat correct (a rarity on the internet). Looking back, I ...
Why Spoilers Ruin Media For Me

I feel spoilers prevent me from having an authentic experience with a piece of media. They create expectations and judgments before I've even engaged with it, which makes it hard for that piece of media to live up to whatever standard I'd already unconsciously set it up against. Jak and Daxter Pacifist Stream Highlights
I just got recommended this after revisiting the series so I'm not sure how far along this project is or if it was dropped but I think I have a good solution for both sides of the discussion on Heaven city. Save it for Act 3 like you want and make most of it very on rails, but half-way through Act 3 you bring back the full Jak 2 map with a ton of side quests or challenges and make the exploration of the map completely optional or even post game content to give you something to do after the main story (These things don't have to do anything with the main story, but could be fun for world bulding, this might also be a means of bringing Errol back as the Vergil esque rival for Jak, like you originally wanted. Also the Freedom League fighting the remnants of the Metal Heads would fit in either role nicely too). I also have some ideas for things you can do in the city, since you are keeping the Metal Heads as enimies I think keeping the area that was changed by the Metal Heads and having some parts of the city ruins that were beyond saving after Jak 2 turned into new nests to show that they are trying to rebuild without a leader would be cool. Because in Jak 2 they really built up the threat that the Metal Heads are supposed to be and the horror aspect that they bring is really cool and I think getting rid of that would be a mistake, show the players just how terrifying the Metal Heads truly are.
I've been wondering what the fuck that was! It happened to me in 2013 when I first played Jak 3 and I just thought it was a normal enemy xD
The series already went to shit after the first game. When Jak 2 was under development GTA 3 was popular so they decided to abandon the concept of the first game and just make a open world edgy GTA wannabe game with guns and steal/drive vehicles. Worst decision by Naughty Dog.
Nice to see you speedrunning
Thumbs down for being lame. But you have your opinion. The plot holes were intended to be a joke/ leaving it open for you to wonder and ponder about them. It was good storytelling…or they were short on production time but the design bibles explains the Jack/Mar stuff
I admire the effort you put in this, but it can be achieved in a most easy way; just change the order you play the missions, and delete the ones that fails the plot
hah, gottem
I just beat the game yesterday Beat jak 2 this past spring And precursor last year Replaying the games now as a adult vs as a kid in the 2000s ,you come to realized It was alot of lore , content left out of the trilogy and jak 3 felt so rushed and empty next to having overpowered weapons and demi god abilities I wish we got more lore about the world in jak 3 from its natural creatures to every type of metalheads that invaded it Or having villages in the wasteland map with its own people, side missions, lore , the History of the horrors the wasteland people faced in the metalhead war which would hit home why Haven City in jak 2 was one of the few cities that was salvation for survivors during the human genocide from the metalheads Precursor legacy already left tons of mystery and wanting to know more of the planet with each environmental level you come across,it been nice if we got more of that in jak 2 and jak 3
Thegamingbritshow did a retrospective on the jak games and he gave a good pitch for erol being consumed by dark eco instead of being a cyborg. And in the end its light jak vs dark erol
Erral be like… Somehow palpatine returned
If I was re-writing this game. I would just cut DarkMakers all together. The Oracle voice in Mar's Tomb referred to the Metal Heads as their ancient rival enemy. Suddenly, oh yeah there's guys even more of our ancient enemy actually. It just doesn't make any sense.
Can I just add something please. If you guys are re-writing Jak 3. Please for the love of all that is good. Don’t make the precursors gods. In TPL and Jak II they were just treated as an ancient lost civilization. Not deities. I can’t recall a single time in TPL where they were treated as gods, only as a mysterious ancient people with superior technology.
also WHAT IS GREEN STAR?!
15:20. No. Blue star arrives exactly after sattelite mission
Just double checked, and no, the day star is visible even in the tutorial mission. Also, the "green star" I'm referring to has been there since the first game. Take a look in the sky at different times of day and you'll see it in all 3 games
@@powercellzekestreams1295 It also visible on the first cinematic (whan jak arrives to the desert). My bad =)
This game is just fine the way it is. Make new ones.
The IP gets to PC and hopefully this just gets it good pr
One thing I hate about Jak 3 is how the haven forest is unrecognisable vs the jak 2 one, it has no resemblance yet you enter it at the same place in both the games
I'm so keen to see what the re writing of Jak 3 will be, seems pretty sick at the moment, I would pay money to play the re write version of Jak 3
I have more nostalgia with Jak 3 as I actually owned the game and had to borrow Jak 2 (When the PS3 version came out I finally owned all three only missing Jak 2) I still have a lot of unanswered questions about Damas, the royal family, how Jak is Mar etc.
Zeke, every color of eco has a use already Green - Health Blue - Speed Red - Strength Yellow - pew pew
KG is Krimson Gaurd??
It always irked me that Ashlyn says that the council is too strong when Jak is being thrown into the desert, but then later in the game, dissolves it and fires Veger. Like wtf.
My idea is that rather than Ashlyn doing it, the council themselves fire Vegar.
1:57:09 *Damas:* Welcome to the clan! *Jak:* (Immediately fucks off to haven city) *Damas:* _Thanksforjoiningtheteamjak!_
*Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I think you can make Erol work in Jak 3 with one simple change:* Don't give Erol a robot body. Make him immobile. It's not like he uses it for anything worthwhile anyway. You couldn't have put some weapons on that thing? Or just brawled Jak with it during the boss fight? So, with this change, let's imagine a revised story: Sometime after the death of The Baron, the flying lab appeared. Initially, the Freedom League believed the KG bots were being run by an AI that The Baron set up prior to his death, with the directive to search for and destroy metal heads. The league used this to their advantage, as the bots would focus on metal heads over Freedom League soldiers. Except by the time Jak returned to Haven, the bots and metal heads had stopped fighting eachother, and directed their efforts against the Freedom League. The league couldn't make heads or tails of it until Jak actually infiltrated the lab: And thats when the reveal comes in: In a large empty room in the center of the lab, with tall walls that span several stories, Jak and Daxter find Erol, or at least what's left of him. He's bound to a monolith suspended from the cieling. From the back of his head there are several wires, that snake upward. Jak and Daxter are horrified, even more so when Erol reveals he's fully concious. Erol explains through gritted teeth that his life was saved by The Barons new bots, but by the time he woke up the Baron was dead. The Baron had never programmed the bots to yield to any authority besides his own. So in their mind Erol was merely an asset, which they put to good use by integrating Erols organic mind into their AI. This allowed the KG bots to approach their directive much more effectively. As such, Erol has been trapped in this room against his will for a very long time. Jak, recognizing that his rivals predicament now once mirrored his own, offers to help. This display of pity only enrages Erol further, who goes onto explain that he at some point managed to find a way to "persuade" the bots in tiny ways. That's why the bots shifted focus. As Erol figured out ways to manipulate the bots, they shifted their directive in favor of Erols own agenda: "Destroy Jak (and everyone Jak cares about for good measure)" Jak still offers to help, and pleads with Erol to let go of his hate, but Erol won't have it. He reveals that he's had the lab bots put together a little present for Jak, in case he ever came to visit. Cue the appearence of what can only be described as a kind of mechanical abomonation. A mish-mash of several different types of KG bot, grafted in spiteful ways onto and into eachother, to create some kind of hulking giant monster. Something viceral, assembled crudly out of spite and malice. Something that has a way of moving that isn't a way things should move. Cue boss fight, possibly also with some kind of evasion sequence using a vehicle. When Jak defeats the boss, Erol becomes ever more enraged, and in a last-ditch effort executes his final trick. A self-destruct sequence of the entire lab. Cue final escape sequence on foot. I think that's a fitting use of Erol for 3. Erol was Jaks rival, and with this ending the point is brought home that Erol is what Jak may have become if he'd let his need for revenge consume him. How this would fit into the dark makers plot, I dunno. I always throught that part was pretty weak in the first place. I'll keep watching to see what y'all think.
It’s funny, If ND really wanted to bring back Jak they shouldn’t even have to waste time creating more concept art. There is so much potential already in these old ideas for some kind of remake or reimagining of Jak
Haha, this project is a great idea! So glad the J&D-community has you! :D A bit late to the party, maybe. But here are my own thoughts as I watched... : "The KG has a new leader" Yea, no shit Torn. And guess what, that leader is you, silly. You were supposed to reform them into "the new Krimson Guard", remember? Clearly someone did a shitty job at rooting out Praxis-hardliners and shutting down the secret robot-project..... Veger not examining the Precursor catacombs CAN be explained by it being very inaccessible. There is tons of rubble and a metal head-army in the way. But those problems should be shown more throughout the game, like Veger's secret schemes being unraveled more gradually throughout the story and his goal of "reaching the catacombs" being more prominent. I think its completely in character for Ashelin to have secretly given beacons to citizens who were banished to the Wasteland. She was always "reluctantly loyal" I believe, she would try to do whatever good she could, when possible. But it makes me wonder about the time-scope though: Did Ashelin set this up with Daemos back when he was banished? How old is Ashelin and when exactly was Praxis' coup? Presumably it was after "young Jak" in Jak2 was born. The game could have shown us more of this back story! I agree Spargus city and "surviving the wasteland" is a bit underwhelming... If you wanna go true grimdark, show just how brutal society in Spargus is by having Daemos send Jak on impossible missions to clear out metal head-infestations or rescue hostages from the Mauraders or sth. As missions get increasingly impossible, Jak calls Daemos out on it. Through Clever/other Wastelander-characters, Jak eventually realizes that yes, its a shit deal, but he can take it or leave it as far as anyone is concerned. This would surely make it more impactful when Daemos' compassion for Jak develops later. Yes Keira should be banished too!! And Samos. For being "Jak's accomplices". Then its like the whole original cast, out on new adventures. Your new ideas for Erol sounds funny tbh. I can see him being this really desperate suck-up who does ANYTHING to get at Jak. He even aligns himself with the Dark makers in order to be on the side who defeats Jak. Or sth, I dunno lol Saving Haven city for act 3 sounds really interesting! I imagine sth like things in Haven get so bad (basically nobody stops Veger's mismanagement), Ashelin and Torn comes to Spargus, along a contingent of Freedom League-troopers and Underground-veterans. They basically ask Damos for help to stage another coup, this time against Veger and his cronies. The "war in Haven City" is Damos leading a Wastelander-invasion of the city, alongside Ashelin & Torn and their "rebel Freedom League-troopers" (maybe Veger's soldiers are good old red/yellow Krimzon Guards?) The "Return to Haven City"-missions could then be about finding a secret entrance to sneak the invasion force in stealthily (Jak has character-development and really comes into his own as a leader during this part). At the end of the coup, Veger has his theatrical death where he does his "Fools, you have no idea what is coming!"-reveal, confirming that the Dark Makers are actually coming and initiating the "Dark Maker-finale" of the game. Veger dies before he can reveal his plan for the catacombs and planetary defence grid. But luckily, Keira and Samous' research (which perhaps is made more prominent throughout the game) gives them the info they need to make an attempt! When Damos then dies, and Jak learns he is his son, it opens up the possibility of Jak being made the ruler of Haven city (reluctantly, more like a figure head, ofc.), thus bringing about a new "reign of Mar" or sth. This could be yet another drop fed into that whole time paradox-thing.
Maybe the crystals give you boosts to your light and dark eco powers like how the armor increases your health?
Those people in the beginning arena aren’t good people they wonder the wasteland killing and stealing they attack you on sight they kidnapped monks they ambush you later in the game no sympathy for them kill ‘em all, unless you can somehow later get their faction to work with Spargus against the darkmakers or something
Love this stream. - But ah clickbait title... does not include Jak 3 being 100% completed ;)
that concept art is truly fascinating
A couple foot notes I thought of over the years; - The training/combat trials should've been captured metal heads seeing that there are already wild metal heads in the wastelands and maybe there will be a mission where Jak thinks Daxter died by some sort giant metal head so he goes Dark Jak mode and that's when Damas finds out and realizing he can control it that's when he finally thinks of how Jak could be useful. There are a bunch of abandoned structures throughout the desert that hold secrets that have been locked away for centuries and can only be opened by wielder of Dark Eco, they initially believed only the corrupted Precursors could open these structures but now realize Jak also could so Damas sends him on missions to uncover these secrets with Kliever. - Erol making a return is cool but not nearly as important, I think the signal the Dark Makers were picking up should've been coming from Gol and Maia, I think them surviving 100s of years in a pool of Dark Eco in a piece of a Precursor robot sounds dope. They should also be the metal head's new leader due to their large amounts of Dark Eco in their genes at this point especially with the Metal Head Leader dead. - Last note I'll mention, at some point maybe after Jak receives Light Eco powers Damas is questioning how Jak can actually use these eco powers and thinks of his son (young Jak) who also showed a gift of being able to channel eco powers and at some point tells Jak about his son that was taken from him and describes him and that's when Jak realizes that Damas is his father but doesn't say anything, yet.
I don't agree with the last one, because why wouldn't Jak say anything? But the others are good. I like to think Torn would be very confused about the whole Gol and Maia thing. Jak would rub his forehead in frustration and say it's a LONG story, and Daxter would interject with: "Yeah, from back when I had pants!!!" >:/ The dark eco structures would be dope. Could also have been the way you get back to haven. And now with a path forged, the wastelanders decided to invade Haven out of spite and opportunity.
I also think the story would be so much more easier to explain if the dark makers where changed to the metal heads and the space ship daystar was just more metal head beings coming to take over the planet after Kor Failed to do so. And didn’t the precursors say in Jak 2 that they fought the Hora-Quan for eons? this would line up well to make the reimagining of Jak 3 better. So I reckon scrap the dark makers and just make them Ancient Metal heads older than Kor. Errol and the krimson guard had connections to the metal heads so it would make sense how he gets involved with them.
I always thought it would have been amazing if in the base game you destroy the kg death bot factory and all the kg bots get deactivated removing that threat and when you destroy the metal head nest tower it kills metal heads and restores the land and by the end of the game the map is full restored to a similar version of Jak 2

Is Klonoa 2 fine in the remake or similar issues?
Klonoa 2 has numerous minor presentation issues (like lighting and colour differences, and weird audio issues at times), but these just amount to a lack of polish compared to the original release. There's no fundamental issues or differences like the first games remake, so if you can't play the PS2 version, the remake of 2 is a decent way to play it
Say what you will about The Lost Frontier but having Keira along for the ride was a major improvement over her barely existing in 3
Yay?
Lost Frontier was terrible. It didn't even follow on the story and didn't even try to. Basically a filler game
Im back to the fandom after years so its all from memory: Damas and Jak had a good mentor-student relantionship (we should get more scenes tho) and it was a place for Jak to feel welcomed in again. Damas was rough but he was honest with Jak and accepted him more than Keira (who seemed fixated on his younger Hero persona). part of Jaks character after being the typical Hero in Jak 1 was accepting his dark side as well. When he goes to Haven City the game kinda drops Spargus? Its like we jump in a different game, we should have some connection to Spargus storywise as we spent time there, make it connect to the overall plot and have some emotional weight. Why are we in this political conflict we dont know much off? We should get hints, have a build up to the villains. Dont Make erol look like a random villain, focus on his role within the story. Erol is focused on revenge maybe he could contrast with Jak letting go of it. Have the race to the Precurors have more contestants with their own reasons. the Precursor revelation can stay that was hilarious keep up with the good content :D
Remakes are for dumb ppl really...i mean i dont mind some games being rebooted like from the 90s okay... but the whole atmosphere and mechanics need to change and its a completley new game
Kind of misleading isn’t it? The actual thing that makes this mission hard is that when and if you get too close to the transport machines they will shoot you down and basically never miss
What if it was just Jak that was brought to the desert and not Daxter? I feel like that would create more impact on his character IMO. Plus it’d be an interesting take to play as Jak then play as Daxter, kinda like in Ratchet and Clank:A Crack in Time
That Ratchet and Clank technique was reused in The Last of Us Part 1 and 2, I think God of War Ragnarök also uses it.
game is way too easy, especially if you did this without just jump spin shooting. that alongside the missable orbs basically makes it unplayable tbh
X X O, X X O, X X O gud
Next time you upload another Slums mission recording, do it with the vulcan barrell it actually DESTROYS in thus (if you know what you're doing/how to use it) great video
After many years of owning and playing Jak 3 myself on the PS3 trilogy, I just encountered this "glitch" myself and was shocked to see it in the game
1:22:25 WHAT?! This is the problem I have with corporate "creatives". They [tend to] have no passion for the work. Could you even imagine landing a gig with Naughty Dog, but be in the position to admit you *DIDN'T* have the fanaticism to finish the game on hero mode - much less never finished Jak II - the BEST game in the entire series, with the most potential, lore direction-wise?! It seems like every big title is tarnished by these mercenary corporate types (who also push politics where it isn't welcome) and we get rehashed, dispassionate content to 'consoom'. Hate to see it, at my age. Real fans should be involved in the **core** of any big project. Look at Bleach - it was effectively dead, and now we are seeing unprecedented NEW scenes that were rushed in the manga. The overwhelming fanbase engagement absolutely brought the TYBW arc back through timeless loyalty to the story, and so too will be the path to more Precursor Legacy. I want more cheery 90s platformers, with epic lore, tight melee/gunning movesets and utter disregard for following any modern trends in gaming...
Mate I literally said in the vid that she didn't have enough time to finish the game, development was already underway. And no, I don't believe you need to be a superfan of a series to be able to work on it, that's just silly. Also keep in mind that she was just the Director, not the creative director or writer or anything like that. Her role was to just make sure the project went smoothly and released on time, and for that I can't fault her. Also idk what you mean by "push politics" lol, have you played these games? Jak 2 is a deeply political game, it's literally cyberpunk fiction
@@powercellzekestreams1295 You are guaranteed diminishing returns involving corporate types who don’t have a complete understanding of the product. Don’t have to be a fan on your level, for example, but should know the entirety of the game experience. Similar problem with showrunners who don’t read/don’t like source material, or “improve” it with their own alterations. “Pushing politics” is very common nowadays, sort of an evangelical movement for social causes. Most people know exactly what I mean. There’s naturally occurring political undertones, i.e. in the zeitgeist, then there are activist self-inserts, corporate “culture” compliance, inclusivity, etc. It’s ‘pushed’ on people, versus being a popular trend that is desired by the majority of the audience. But I digress. ultimately enjoyed your video and overall content, keep it up you madman!
@@Alt_Haven oh I get it. By pushing politics, you just mean when black or queer people are in media
I'm still in the beginning of the video (at Kleiver's introduction) and I wanna try my hand at interpreting the line you pointed out. When he refers to himself as "the guy who runs this place" I believe he's referring to himself being kinda like the Vin of Spargus. You know how Vin's the one running the power station in Haven City? He's not literally in charge, far from it, but he's the guy who keeps the lights on. Kleiver's like that, but with more muscles and oil. He's the guy keeping the lights on, fixing the water pumps, oiling the gatelocks, working on the cars, cooking the food, (food stores), being the janitor, that kinda stuff. He doesn't run Spargus in the political sense, but he runs it in the literal sense. Damas can play king all he wants, but Kleiver enables all of them to actually, you know, live.
"Those look like coordinates, like the ones from-" I've never been sure what he's referring to here. Is it the time map? I kinda feel like there should have been like, a novel or comic between Jak II and 3 where some of this stuff got properly introduced. (Edit: I posted this before I got to your breakdown of this cutscene and you basically said the same thing I just did) Yeah, I'm pretty sure Jak pretty much summoned the Dark Makers by tampering with that satellite. Seem is right to be pissed, he doomed them all.
Or just the garage, and street-level action. The Krew of Spargus; but ironically less corruptible as the lawless environs keep wastelanders honest.
Yee, that's always how I interpreted it too. Kliever is kind of the Mike to Damas' Gus. Kliever is given a lot of leeway and authority, as long as he gets the job done.
There was weird audio popping on the video
It was only at the very beginning, I didn't realise until I already recorded it
Man, hearing all your musings reminds me of when i tried to do my own kinda rewrite/re-imagining of Jak II and 3 - namely, how I didn't have any ideas for 3 because I never bothered playing it(was too young when it came out, and by the time I could play it II soured me on the notion). The points about how fucked up it is that Damos forces you to murder a bunch of guys, how Jak technically started the whole thing with the Dark Makers, and a few others are all really good, but I'd feel bad if just straight-up lifted those :Y
It's good to hear so many other people have spent time trying to retcon this series. It's needed.
