Welcome! I am returning to academia after working in legal compliance for the last eight years, however I have always loved reading, history and book collections. I currently am completing my Masters in Literature and Arts through the University of Oxford. Please stick around if you want to follow my journey, talk off-the-beat-in-track book recommendations and enjoy seeing someone slowly and sustainably transform their life.

The Tortured Poets Department Book Club
The Sound and the Fury is absolutely fascinating--but not a quick or easy read. I adore Lark Rise--and it would certainly be a comfortable read for the end of the season. There is a lovely screen adaptation, too. Good luck with your listmaking!
That's quite a list! Good luck. I, too, must read more from my shelves though I find it quite impossible to walk past my local library without popping in to see what's new. I've been wanting to read Augustus, maybe next year. I would be interested in which South African authors you enjoy and which of their books you have read. From another SA ex-pat in Ireland!
Hi madam students good speaking English language
I’m reading Far from the Madding Crowd and loving it. Hardy’s writing is magical in my opinion.
Absolutely agree!
I too took my undergrad, in creative writing, at Oxford. It was, like you said, transforming.
I love that! I’m so glad this experience has been the same for so many people
This is lovely! I’m inspired to pour more into my love of literature, like you I made the safe choice in when choosing what to study.
So many of us did forgoing our passions for the safe choice. And don’t get me wrong, the safe choice is good 😊 especially when it gives you the opportunity to make the passion choice now
You definitely are not putting the perception through that you are breezing through. I like the swimming against the tide and then floating.
Thanks Nicole, sometimes we just need to float
Love to connect with you who share same passion about literature poetry art
O wow you are also passionate about poetry , words , self expression ❤ This monologue i never forgot from dead poet society movie
Thanks for sharing your journey! As I've already said your channel is among those which supports me on my studying path. I don't have groupmates or any community in academia and some people I know in academia have accomplished their goals several years ago, so UA-cam helps me not to feel too lonely on this long way. I watch your videos every Monday morning and it helps so much!
The same here, no schoolmates, no academia community, on my own on the path of pursuing a master degree. I feel energized and motivated to continue with this amazing channel. It is not easy, and I wish us luck 🥰
@ good luck to you, too!
I love that we are building this community of people that are working towards building their passions - it’s lonely but we at least all have each other
I got my BA in Philosophy at 63. Now, at 66, I am starting my Master's by distance Learning in February 2025, alongside chronic illnesses and fatigue. It has been hard, but it was my lifelong ambition to get my BA. To anyone, I say go for it! Thanks for your vlogs, Cait you are amazing!!
It is so hard and I’m so inspired to hear how you have taken on this journey ❤️
I'm 55, and currently attaining my B.S. and then moving onto my Master's in Science Education (Secondary Biological Science). Oddly enough I'm also working toward being accepted into an Associate's Degree program for Radiography, which will allow me to venture into MRI and/or Nuclear Medicine technologies. I felt that creating opportunities for myself, at this stage of my life, was the best choice. So, please keep chasing after whatever you'd like to do.
@alexismundy5893 Alexis, congratulations! I'm so happy to hear that you're continuing to work toward your goals so that you can create a life that you're happy living. Reading your post provides me with much needed inspiration. Thank you.
@@cait_murphyhurrell Cait, you keep believing and working toward what truly makes you happy. Sometimes progress is slow, but you're walking the path and moving forward which means you will ultimately reach the finish line.
the way you said, "trying to reconnect with this part of themselves that they've been masking," is 💯! I've been recognizing this in exactly that way in my therapy these past couple of weeks! 💖
It’s taken me months of self-reflection and journaling to realise this and I still don’t have all the pieces tied down but I definitely feel more like myself
You said what I've been trying to express for a while. I feel like I'm still in the midst of seeing real shifts, but I know it's happening! And I'm back in school for many of the same reasons, mostly to follow what I love and am passionate about. With no idea where it's leading me, I'm leaning into and enjoying the process!
I love this so much!!!! We don’t always need a plan when we follow our passions
“I have never felt more like myself” - what a powerful statement, Cait. Thank you for sharing these thoughts, I’m sure many of the folks here (including me) need to hear this!
Thank you for always supporting me my friend ❤️ I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for you!
Thank you as always Cait and you have been a real support and understanding along with Kate and all the others in Accepted society! I am so pleased to have found you all! As a mature student you correct, I am so happy I am doing this and what does a mature student mean!! All I know, it means that I need to relearn how to study and pace myself! I don't have much of a community with my cohort as all online, so accepted is my cohort! Also yes having the correct mindset and understanding is essential and those round us keep us focused! its essential! Thank you again!, so pleased your happy and cannot wait for your next steps!
It’s so wonderful to have you as a part of the community and having that mindset makes a massive difference 🤎
I'll have to think carefully about my own list. Thanks for the prompting! I love the specificity of your choices, not merely being generally well-known or broad subject matter. Not obvious choices at all, which is great!
Such interesting books. This is my first time watching your channel. I have one suggestion that if implemented would be helpful to your viewers. Because you do not provide a books mentioned list in your episode notes and because author’s names can be variously spelled, I suggest you hold the book perfectly still with title and author clearly visible for several minutes or have a pop-up of the book.
Thank you for this! Usually I do include the book names and authors in the description but I completely forgot this time round - so sorry about that. I have updated the description box with the titles of the books and the authors
That really doesn’t work. Books that make a huge impact on one person’s mind are not the books that speak to another person.
That’s true, this is just my opinion
Non-fiction can of course be thrown into two sections. Trash and meaningful.
🤣 fair
@@cait_murphyhurrell mm mh.
What a great idea for a video! I will get thinking for my NFN books! Papyrus is a great book, I would have had that in mine as well :)
Can’t wait to see what your top picks are 😊
Thanks for sharing this list! I've added "Eve Bites Back" and "Women in Pictures" to my TBR, however I don't know when I can read them, cuz now the main focus is on the theoretical reading in the sphere I study
Totally get that but I hope you enjoy them when you can 😊
New Subscriber. Glad I found your channel. Hows the weather in Ireland?
Welcome! We love the grey weather here in Ireland 😁
You have really inspired me to read some of these books. Thank you
I’m so glad!
Thank you for sharing those encouraging words!
You’re welcome ❤️ I’m glad they resonated with you
Amazing! Love the chair and back ground!! great books to read! I am going to try and do 5 books! in accepted so will join in the book club!
You may have anticipated our Accepted Book club theme… 😜
@cait_murphyhurrell 🤣
I DID NOT like The Poisonwood Bible either! I have not read any of her books 😮
Yay! So glad it’s not just me!
thanks! found what I requested on your Mst video (this list) - also you should get sponsored by Penguin!!!
Glad this is helpful 😊 oh I wish I could get sponsored by Penguin!
Hey could you share the reading list for the foundational Oxford course you got? I’m seriously considering (lawyer here with similar story and this vid could have changed my life)!
Glad you found the video on my channel and so happy to see lawyers here 🫶🏻
@@cait_murphyhurrell also wondering - did you do any conted short courses before the foundation? considering dipping my toes
Would definitely recommend the short courses to dip your toes in - I did the Critical Reading one and the Contemporary literature short courses
@ amazing - thanks !
@@cait_murphyhurrell would you advise doing the critical reading before contemporary literature?
Both your program and your cohort sound so lovely!
They really are incredible!
Thank you for sharing, Cait. You had me going at the end. It took Covid to push me to follow my dreams. Best decision ever and a big shout out to the Continuing Education Department they are just one amazing team.
Totally agree! I love to see people like you taking that control of their lives! 😁
❤❤
I like watching library vlogs so-so much! I’ve never tried to study in a library even though I’m on my 9th year now (never needed any books there, also my department’s student section was closed for renovation for several years), but it’s so inspirational to see beautiful libraries online. Congrats on completing your final residency and good luck with your master's dissertation and PhD application! P.S. Is it convinient to wash hands/shower/bathe with a smart ring?
I don’t think you get much prettier than the Oxford libraries but I would love the opportunity to visit more libraries and see some more beautiful spaces! Oh yes - totally convenient - forgot to mention that it’s water resistant up to 100m so you can wear it while swimming, showering and even scuba diving
As my supervisor says to me: "crying just means you are human". The fact you got so emotional is a good thing because that means the course and Accepted gave you so much. Better than having a vlog where you say "glad that is over with". Name for bear: Ralphie
So true! And I love Ralphie!
Aw I loved this vlog so so much <3 and that speech at the end got me feeling emotional
Thank you for taking my call while I was sobbing ❤️
Mam can you earn 70k pound sterlings a year after graduation from university in uk? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
I’ve already responded to this comment on another one of my videos - it depends
I hope you had the most wonderful week and thank you for inviting us to start it with you! (Surely the bear's name is Aloysius?)
I think Aloysius is perfect!
Amazing thank you for sharing and very emotional! You have given me my motivation back! Talk soon xx
Awww thank you Janice! This means the world to me ❤️❤️
Dear Cait, what a lovely, emotional but also uplifting vlog. I almost teared up with you. ❤ I have a rather practical question: Why do you prefer to stay at Wellington Square/Rewley House rather than staying in college? Is it due to the shorter distance to lectures and the city centre or is there another reason? Sending hugs, Siv (member of the ContEd fan club 😃)
It’s a great question - mostly it’s due to availability. My first two residences I stayed at Kellogg but these last two I stayed at Rewley just because I left booking accommodation a bit late and Kellogg was fully booked 😊
But you can still have all the college advantages (meals etc.) even if you stay at ContEd
Great video. Lots of cool books. Thanks.
Glad you like them 😁
Shirley Jackson!
Your pronunciation of Geetanjali is miserable.
I read Lady Audley's Secret last week and couldn't put it down!! It's so good!
Right!? It’s absolutely brilliant!
Well I'm working to be ambidexterious. Intially, for about a month it was a little hard to mentally imagine something I'd feel dichotomous with since I also go to bible study. Now it's hardly a struggle at all because I just kept using my non-dominant hand. I also don't really have a lot of anxiety. So I don't think I have to read something like the book titled Pew. But other books I see. Lastly, I used to read quite a bit of old fashioned books since somebody did teach me. Oh and I'm a late millennial.
Happy to hear 😊 you definitely don’t have to read anything I suggest but I’m glad you like the other suggestions
Mam can you earn 60k pound sterlings a year after graduation from university in uk? Plz reply in yes or no. Thanks a lot.
Anyone can in reality earn any amount after university , there's unfortunately no guarantee what you will earn!
Really depends on a number of factors like your department, level and research grants or funding
I couldn’t agree more with your opinion of Wolf Hall. It took me three attempts to get into it, but I’m so glad I persisted. It opened up a whole new world. The TV series with Mark Rylance and Damien Lewis is extraordinary.
I haven’t watched the series but I’ve heard amazing things about it - probably need to give it a go 😁
Awww another chapter! However exciting times ❤❤❤
Thank you for always supporting Janice ❤️
Hi I love your book content, it is very aligned with my tastes. Can you please recommend some of your favorite book content creators?
Aww thank you! I’ve tagged a lot of them in this video 😁
Thank you! Please give Romantic Outlaws by Charlotte Gordon a try. So beautifully written! Would love to know what you think about it. Also if i may suggest reading that first then Frankenstein…
Oh this sounds brilliant! Thank you for the recommendation 😁 added it to the tbr!
Can United States students do this Oxford literature degree since it seems most of his online? I was reading that you have to go to summer school there for at least a couple weeks. Is there anyway around that? For the Shakespeare.
Absolutely! There are plenty of US students in my cohort, but that’s for the Masters. I think what you’re looking at is the Undergraduate Certificate and I believe you will need to go to Oxford for a week for the Shakespeare week but they might allow this to be online if there are reasons that someone can’t travel. For the Masters, you would need to travel to Oxford for a week every term
This was super helpful! I’ve mostly just been jotting my ideas on a Word doc + Excel and I find it to be all over the place. I’ll definitely give this a try to see if this helps with my being all over the place. 😊 Best of luck to you and your PhD app process!
Even just jotting down ideas or words onto a random board has been so helpful to eventually organise everything 😊 thanks for the well wishes and for supporting the channel ❤️
