A group of friends having fun at their remote, 40 acre compound in Northern Michigan. Dirt bikes, fishing, 4x4s, cabin building and off grid projects.

Lakers in Superior at the Huron Mountain Club
Up on the annual salmon trip. Rough goings for silvers with hot temps and a strong south wind. Views and adventure made up for it. Got to see the lineup of beautiful old cabins at the ol HMC. Another great fall trip to the best place in the world.

New boat! 1968 Starcraft Chieftain 21
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
Almost a full season of Great Lakes trolling under my belt. Cut my teeth this year on little 12 and 14 foot boats. Finally found a good deal on the boat I’ve been in love with for years. It’s a project, with plenty of work to be done. Here’s a little intro video showing off what I bought and the condition it came home in. I couldn’t be happier. Exited to work on what needs to be done and start ...
Foggy Lake Huron catch and cook shore lunch

Out with the boys in our little boats. Lakers, steelhead and salmon late June/early July. Cooked a small laker on shore and navigated the worst fog I’ve ever seen. Epic few days #TinFins #lakehuron #salmonfishing #steelheadfishing

Got a couple nice Atlantics and a laker over the weekend. Trolling with Jet & Dipsy divers. One of the best days I’ve had on the lake. Northern Lake Huron Memorial weekend 2023 50-60FOW pulling small spoons, various depths.

Back down on the lake in my bigger boat. Got the fish finder working. Long lining crankbaits in 15-16 feet. Took longer to fillet them all than it did to get em in da boat!

Tiny boat Lake Michigan coho attempt & river pluggin’ for steelhead

My first attempt at running the big water NOT in a bay. Learned a lot. Waves as big as buicks. Shifted focus to some river plugging and picked up a nice hen. Time for a bigger boat, eh?

Salmon fishing & camping across the Upper Peninsula fall 2020
WOW,,,, We really need to TALK to each other! PM,, Email,, PHONE!? I have a VN '81 sitting here, it's an OMC BOOT BOAT. It's waiting for me to take out the OMC drive & bolt on a bracket for a 150 hp outboard. I've been searching for weeks, hoping to find someone on UA-cam who has done this change-over at least 4-5 times. Starcraft I/O to outboard conversions. I'm waiting, wanting to learn about everything that might go WRONG with the swap! Back in the '70s, the STARCRAFTS were notorious for popping rivets, AND having the splash rail CRACK mid-ship. I know of 3, 20' & 21'ers that are sitting out back in a marina junk yard. I also had that same thing happen to us, 12 miles out on Erie. My Chieftain ended up with a 16" long stress crack mid-ship. (Starcraft actually SELLS a stringer to floor REPAIR KIT, for the '70 & 80 models,,, AFTER it's welded back together! If you don't see a slew of rivets going up the outside,,,, from the floor stringers, spanning up over the 'flexible' splash rail, & up the gunwale sides, DON"T BUY IT,, unless you know how to modify these old aluminum boats.!!) I have lots of pictures,,,, of 2 different boats, if anyone would like to see some CRACKED-UP STARCRAFT BOATS. I'm about ready to scrap out my '71 chieftain,,, so I have a VGC perfect running 165hp, 6, & the outdrive available.??? AND, since I'm pulling out the '81 OMC BOOT DRIVE,,,, it will also be available, for sale.
You need the camper top Somehow the mosquitoes always find me
I just got me one today can’t wait to dig in and start some work
I wouldn’t mess with the antique drive. A later mercruiser drive will bolt up but you need to chain for reverse as there is a locking pawl on the ones actually for that old system.. 1969 or 1970 is when the drive system had hydraulic power both ways. And Pertronix burns up quicker than points. Plus water in the oil means you have a bad riser on a 2.5 most likely. If it were mine, I’d convert it to an alpha one 3.0L. Transom will need trimming because the cutout got a little bigger, and you would need new wiring and gauges. But then you would have something you can get parts for and run like a newer boat
@@mattdudley3789 oh yeah I’m currently 3/4 of the way through my alpha swap. Learned quick just how old of an mc-1 drive I had. Need to do an update video soon
I did the same with my ‘71 Offshore. It had a 120hp MC1 that had power trim. Mines got Alpha gen 1. I should have went gen 2 but I couldn’t find a good donor boat with gen 2
Where's the update on this? Any progress?
@@seandwyer3598 Oh man lots of progress. I need to start getting some clips together on here again. I’m most of the way through converting it all over to Alpha 1 stuff. Nice rebuilt engine, new flooring, some cabin modifications. Taking my time, but there may be hope I get to test it before winter
Thats the way it used too be and should stay, thats fishing 🎣
Those imperfections are what give it character. Just a nice boat .
Dude, I’m pretty sure we live in the same area of Michigan and I’ve got the boat, you’ve got the the spots. Let’s send it man
I'm rebuilding a 72 Starcraft SS 16'. 👍
Not many people get to lay eyes on those houses. You guys should film more in the area from the water.
Nice fish! You certainly deserve every fish you catch in that boat.
where were you fishing? Is that by the islands or were you further east. I live in PA and would like to start fishing for walleye in late feb and march but dont feel like driving to Catawba area. Was wondering if you could pick up decent walleye out of Cleveland that early. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?
congratulations buddy, thats a beauty
That Laker sandwich looked delish! Funny how you ended up catching lakers on your salmon trip. Kind of like deer hunting and seeing squirrels everywhere
That's a beauty. How do you even find that today. I would convert to center console with a bracket, so I wouldn't even buy that boat because it is in too good of shape. Might do the bracket though, if I was going to keep and use it. Clean the interior, bracket and suzuki 200hp, keep it until you're 60. Put grease thru axles on the trailer so you use it all the time. We do island camping with a 21' bluefin '82. You don't need the dinghy, get fiberglass pole anchors, 1".
You have to have stone to take a 12 footer on erie let alone in cold weather. Nice video
What size boat is that if you don’t mind me asking?
This one is an 11 1/2 foot Sears. Just over 4 foot wide at its widest.
@@regdunlop91 deep v or was it like a John boat with a v up front? I’m looking to get a little 14ft v jon boat but have just been seeing what other people have been using.
@@tomball7681 V front, flat bottom. It’s quite a stable little boat actually. Much more stable than my slightly larger 14’ sylvan v front/flat bottom. I also use a yellow 14’ mirrocraft deep v in my videos that is solid as a rock. Biggest annoyance using the little boat in this video- the 6hp is a great motor, but takes quite a long time to get out to the depths I’m usually after. Only runs about 10-12 with all my gear, which feels fine on inland lakes.
@@regdunlop91 thanks for the reply I’m looking at a 14ft v front I sold my 16 deep v recently becuase it was too nice to hunt out of so I was trying to get a boat that was usable for a little bit of everything.
@@tomball7681 yeah most of my other boating videos are in my 14 mirrocraft. V front, pretty flat in the back. Thing is a tank. It’ll zip across a gravel bed, cut through weeds, and handle some pretty hefty Great Lake chop without breaking a sweat in any venue
Sheeeew! She's gonna be fishy.
Looks like a cool project with lots of potential! Gotta love those aluminum hulls
Lol it doesn’t look too pregnant so I’m keeping it. 🤣
Haha yeah if I notice those big belly females around spawning time, I’ll toss em back. It’s such a strong fishery though, that I’m sure it wouldn’t make a difference keeping a few females.
What did you use to strengthen the corners on your transom and mount the rod holders to? Thinking about doing something similar to my jon boat.
I took my junk clamp on rod holders, removed the clamp off the bottom and just bolted them straight to my gunwale tops & standard corner plates that are on the mirrocraft. I just punched rivnuts in where I wanted them to mount. Holds up good, you just need to have them bolted in tight
That was a good outline of how to die on the lakes! Many before you thought they'd be fine too and weren't as fortunate, ten minutes in the water and your new home is the icewater mansion!
Lol
Bro content was dece but commentary and heart were spot on!
Real fisherman!
Be careful with that net I had one and the whole basket came off this spring during the run
Yeah I’m not a big fan. The basket isn’t deep enough, and it’s quite a short handle. Especially when I’m salmon fishing and have to pull in a dipsy rig
What boat ramp did you launch out of?
I left Cleveland almost 50 years ago. Back then the lake was a cesspool, full of pollution from the steel mills etc. That was about the time the toxic slick on the Cuyahoga river caught on fire! Times change, looks like the lake is a lot cleaner now then way back when I was there. Miss catching those walleyes! Damn good eating fish. Didn’t they used to call them blue pike?
Nice setup
Bro that's a foul dropping the fish whistle in the water... Let's fish. I have lots of whistles.. lol
Bro let's fish. We could use my, it's a little bigger and can walk around a little bit. And I have a terrova with autopilot.
Where about you fishing?
That's a good day there. Fresh fish, cold beer and America
Epic What did you catch the Atlantic on?
Both were nabbed on a small Watermelon moonshine spoons behind a 30’ jet diver. Went out the next day and had one bite the thing clean off RIP
@@regdunlop91 I've been wanting to try some trolling in my small boat. I have a 18ft might be Jet sled. I've seen your truck and boat a mile from my house.we should fish sometime.
@@jkfishslayer oh man no way! Downstate or up north? I’m half and half between Redford and up by Cheboygan

Good stuff. Some trips are hard to beat.
What part of Erie was this? You were trolling a flicker alone, no weights?
Limit of 6 on Lake Erie???
Dang I just had a look and you’re right! I always assumed 5 and I keep up on the regs pretty good. Thanks for the heads up. Wouldn’t have taken me long to grab a 6th either
Nice! Where’s ya launch out of?
Where in Lake Erie?
Those flicker Shad’s work amazing. Caught my limit on them last year there too
Great video love your style keep it simple. Nothing fancy
🤙🎣✌️
What it's all about!
You're a wild man bud. I remember fondly those (Who cares) what the weather is days.
I love the sound of water hitting the boat. Miss my aluminum boat...
5x100 500 fish gone...lotts of boats
Bad ass! What area where ya fishing round? I’ve been fishing the reefs west of Putin. Pretty slow
Walleye fry coming! Check the fuel line inside of the fuel tank. I had one deteriorate and it was sucking air. I replaced the filter at the end too. Really had me scratching my head. Cheers
Yeah these old gray colored lines junk up or collapse at just about nothing. I’ll be installing real fuel line asap
