i just beat this yesterday, and it is tough, but the best thing to do is just keep running it, they are all practice runs until you beat it! you will get more and more consistent and learn what works and what doesn't.

I loved the boss fights more then most shooters in this, but man, that first episode is rough to get through. It wasn't hard, far from it, but it was so claustrophobic that it hinders the great movement Forgive me Father has it made wanted to progress further a slog. Once the game opens up and you're not just in narrow hallways or ever so slightly larger rooms the game gets really good. I do still have an issue with the upgrade system in that some guns just feel anemic before they're upgraded. Normal Harpoon compared to tri-shot harpoon is a night and day difference, or how the machine gun can be upgraded to shoot lightning....3 episodes before ammo for it can drop, not the best of decisions if you ask me. It's okay, but I played this back to back with Cultic:Chapter 1 and boy it's not nearly on the same level as that.

Great video! I completed this very trial with the gold ranking earlier today. It had taken me a handful of attempts (around 15 tries or so), improving more and more and getting a little further each time. It’s a serious challenge no doubt, but I guarantee it is 100% doable. A solid amount of patience, maintain a calm demeanour, and a real steady hand are your greatest assets here. Most of all, do not give up! 😃

For me it'd be 10. Team Fortress Classic 9. Quake 1 8. Aliens vs. Predator (because for its time letting aliens crawl up walls and predators see with crazy vision modes was amazing) 7. Half-Life 6. System Shock 2 5. Wolf3D 4. Doom 2 3. Quake 2 (my first serious internet-multiplayer FPS, and man the mods were fun for this one too!) 2. Unreal Tournament 1. Tribes 1 (incredibly deep shooter that was insanely rewarding of skill) Honestly looking up 90s FPSes made me realize just how back-weighted they are (I think easily 5+ of these games released in 1999, and probably most of those were for the xmas season too).

The turok games are also all fantastic, turok 1 feels the most "retro" like quake with no headshots and big tanky powerful enemies, while 2 and 3 are slower and more tactical with sniping and stealth and such

nobody needs ray tracing in the first place, because it does nothing new. it is just a gimmick by nvidia to sell more cards and the sad part is, most ppl don't get that.

It's actually terrifying how much more improved the AI is, it goes to show clearly! To an extent, as some people mentioned, but it's more difficult than the original.

Doom 64 is a great game but everyone complains about the lighting. There was a brightness slider and at max it looked perfect.

I loved Heretic MORE than Hexen.

Great list. I also would choose Quake 2 over part 1. The game I would add to the list is Star Wars: Dark Forces. Excellent shooter. Also enjoyed Sin and Half-Life.

Sweet memories… I´ve played and love all these games in the 90’es. But my top 5 is not exactly the same. 5: Quake 2; 4: Doom 2; 3: Goldeneye 007; 2: Duke Nukem 3D; 1: Half-Life.

Thank you for the excellent commentary and you were encouraging to me, as when I got to the end for the first time, I had a time of 10.45, and then went to work practicing the hardest parts I was most inconsistent and slowest at, and then after a few hours of practice I started to feel very confident from the repetition of certain sections, then I worked on the later parts of the challenge individually as I had the first two thirds down (imo sticking to a strict route each time for each section so it becomes muscle memory and for consistency) and then after a few more tries finally got it, with a time of 9:44 Thanks for the guide !

Ouch, no Turok 2? Wolfenstein 3D was my first FPS and will always hold a fond memory. Beating it, finding secrets in a day of no walkthroughs or cheats that I knew of. Doom then great, without doubt. And Doom 2 warmly welcomed - I’m glad both are now available on console. Couldn’t stand Quake. But really glad to see Hexen get a mention - a spin off in my head and one of a lovely theme / setting, much more my style and was engrossed. After that it was a dive onto consoles as PC upgrades were expensive. So Golden Eye and Turok 2 would have to be up there in that decade for me.

This game is such a breath of fresh air. Finally someone made a unique horror game, in Lovecrafts mythos and I love it. I do find it a bit amusing you’re character is embracing the terror, when everyone in Lovecrafts tale, falls into despair. Pretty badass though. Good review, mate. 💪

I really like the idea of making one of these games with an actual original unique style and not just... retro pixel art pastiche style.

one thing i love about the remaster, it's way harder. the enemy ai isn't necessarily improved... per-se... but they throw their most op attacks and new defenses at you much more often. like the tank's plasma attack, that one absolutely *chews* through armor and power shields.

I'm just finding out today! I don't play online anymore, but it's still sad.

the remaster is a totally different game because of the improvements to the AI, the original Quake 2 was way too easy because of how dumb the AI was and unlike Quake 1 they werent fast and aggressive either
