Anatomy of a Roll Forming Line - Part 2 of 4: Coil Straightening & Pre-Punch
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 роки тому
Part 2 of 4: The second step in the continuous roll forming line is leveling and straightening the metal with coil processing equipment. The straightener removes defects such as bow, camber, and twist. After coil straightening, a pneumatic punch press feeder pulls the strip into a pre-punch press. The servo controlled feeder is accurate to 0.001”. In the pre-punch press, a die punches specifica...
Anatomy of a Roll Forming Line - Part 3 of 4: Roll Forming Mill
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
Part 3 of 4: The third step in the continuous roll forming line is setting up the roll forming mill and tooling. The roll forming machine setup is the most important part of the process and often takes 5-9 hours to complete. The roll forming tools are placed precisely in the machine with feeler gauges. Electric motors and gearing drive the force through the tooling shafts to form the strip. Ind...
Anatomy of a Roll Forming Line - Part 4 of 4: Cutoff & Secondary Operations
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Part 4 of 4: The final step in the continuous roll forming line is the cutoff process and secondary operations. A linear encoder records the speed of a metal strip through the roll form mill. The speed is synced with a sensor, which detects pre-punched holes and triggers the cutoff press. Industry-leading AMS controls ensure the process is always running at maximum speed and precision. Once the...
Anatomy of a Roll Forming Line - Part 1 of 4: Coil & Uncoiler
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Part 1 of 4: The first step in the continuous roll forming line is loading a metal coil onto the uncoiler machine. The uncoiler operation is controlled by a laser loop system that detects slack in the strip and feeds downstream machines at the optimum speed. Dahlstrom Roll Form’s specialized uncoiling capabilities: powered uncoilers, unpowered uncloilers, dual spindle uncoilers, and coil cradle...

Roll Forming in The Great Depression: The History of Dahlstrom Roll Form (Part 5 of 8)
Переглядів 344 роки тому
During the 1930s, Dahlstrom experienced financial hardship and bankruptcy. Like many businesses, the company was overextended because of the booming 1920s. When the crash came, the tremendously depressed construction and building industry caused the market loss of Dahlstrom’s main product. In New York City, however, construction and building were still going on and the Rockefeller Center, then ...

The country’s recovery from a deep depression accelerated in 1939 when the war in Europe erupted with the march of the German Army into Poland. It was not long before the nation was again involved in “a war to end all wars.” Along with the rest of the country, Dahlstrom “joined up” and converted its facilities and turned the skill of its workers to the fabrication of war products. In addition to the architectural line, specialty products evolved from the roll formed moldings and shapes and early on became a part of the Dahlstrom line. These rolled forms were originally developed to supply architectural trim for the metal doors, but the shapes and mouldings were soon being applied by manufacturers to their various products. The auto industry took notice of Dahlstrom mould...
Roll Forming Steel in the 1920s: The History of Dahlstrom Roll Form (Part 4 of 8)
Переглядів 744 роки тому
Originally, forming was done with wooden dies using a drawbench, then steel rollers, and, in the 1920s with the advent of hardened steel, production efficiency, and quality increased tremendously. With hardened steel, beautiful decorator trim could be made from harder stainless steels. Dies for special shapes as well as stock dies for mouldings and shapes 1,000s of them were produced in the com...

This is all well and good for evaluating our purchase decision. However, it does not help me calculate the load bearing strength of my build, because it only is a 2D specification. For example, a 1 inch square duct tape piece will hold 10x less than 10 layers before stretching and breaking. So, I must assume that a 24 ksi tensile strength aluminum will fail at 1 inch by 1 inch bar at 24,000 lbs, and a 1/8th inch thick by 1 inch long aluminum fail at 3000 lbs.
