how I make test tiles
Diving in the recycling bin = perfect test tile forms. I've probably made 600 of these test tiles over the past year and a half and they are just perfect for me. If you like them, I'd love to hear from you if you try it!
Glaze chemistry intimidated me at first but having a ton of test tiles takes the pressure off of feeling like you will "ruin" a piece with bad glaze. Take good notes and test test test with your helpful little test tiles!

pysanky process

I dipped my toes into pysanky during a time when I was unwell and wasn't strong enough to do pottery. It was a great way to stay creative and honour my body's needs. Here you can watch me decorate my second egg and at the end, there's a few more finished eggs that I did later. See my pottery at www.stiina.net Instagram studio.stiina Thank you for watching! Preparing clay slip for sliptrailing with a cellophane cone (henna cone slip trailing) - narrated
Hello! For manual kiln, I replaced all of my elements. Every other one isn’t working, so you have any troubleshooting advice? There are two per switch (6total). Thanks!
How did you make that slip apparatus
It's a henna cone. It's a piece of plastic cellophane rolled up like a piping bag. You can look up tutorials on UA-cam on how to roll a henna cone :) then I use a big icing bag to fill them. I have a video on it too.
Awesome! What size pvc pipe is that? P.S: love the henna design!
Thank you! It is a 1.5" pipe, it says so in the video :) but I know the text can go by fast!
Very clever!
Close up shots would be helpful. Thanks for sharing your work.
This video is a few years old... I have a lot more videos showing different angles now. You can also find me on Instagram. Thanks for watching :)
Does the clay ever get moldy in the boxes?
It hasn't ever gone moldy for me, even after extended periods of storage (illness and moving had me not doing pottery for over a year and I just unpacked my things last week. No moldy clay)
Wow that plant decal is awesome, ty for the advice!
Thank you! The wheat design is sliptrailing :)
What size are your bisque molds?
@@dianemodel5824 I will try to remember to measure them!
I don't want to miss any details but the text overlay blocks put some of your dialog box and cuts off the last sentence. If you have the transcript please include a link. I am trying to use context to guess.
I'm not sure what you mean. If you need more time to read the text you can pause the video. I'm trying to guess from context what you mean too 😉 but I'm happy to help if there's something you want to ask me!
Hi Stiina, amazing work! Will definitely try this to fet consistent plates. By the way, what pottery rack are you using?
Thanks for watching! I bought it from a restaurant supply store. It's called a bun rack or proofing rack.
@@studiostiina840 perfect thanks !
I am just about ready to start making mugs; thanks for this great video! Good luck always😊
Thank you and good luck to you as well!
Your glaze is so pretty! Love the affects!
Thank you, i worked hard on my glazes!
Awesome Slip trailing, so neat and uniformed, ❤ Today i did my 1st slip trail with letters, what a mess, gonna try again tomorrow. Great video Thanks.
It's definitely a tricky technique that needs lots of patience and practice. Good luck!!
@@studiostiina840 thank you 🙂
This is excellent!!!!!
Thank you! I love them 😍
Absolutely loving your videos! Can you tell!? I love the color of your clay! May o ask what you use? Is it a cone 6?
I love your space!! It’s so well organized with lots of light and space!!
I miss it so much! We moved out of that house a year ago and I haven't been able to do pottery at all since then.
I miss it so much! We moved out of that house a year ago and I haven't been able to do pottery at all since then.
What beautiful mugs!! Love that glaze. I would absolutely LOVE to dip glaze but I don’t know anyone who does and it seems like a lot can go wrong if you don’t do everything right. I love that you said you have to let that last drip dry on the rim!! Makes sooo much sense. I’m hoping to find a dipping glaze class I can go to. Not being able to ask questions when needed is a huge downfall of online classes for me.
It's definitely hard when you're on your own. Lots of trial and error. I would recommend getting the brush glazes you like, in powder form first. That's how I transitioned. I was using Amaco Blue Rutile brush glaze and I bought the powder. It's cheaper and faster and is a "safer" way to start. It comes with instructions of how much water to add etc. You still have to do lots of testing but at least you don't have to buy 30 different ingredients. Then when you are ready to mix your own , look UP Sue MacLeod for her beginner recommendations. She's great.
Oops Michele, I just realized I was replying to your comments with my personal profile and not my business one! Sorry if it was confusing.
@@studiostiina840 Not a problem at all. I hadn’t read the comment until now and I’m glad I saw it. I didn’t even think about that. I know about sue. She’s incredible.
Do you have issues from breathing in the mold? I have issues with mold growing from my piecrs drying. I have a basement studio, so opening windows isn't always an option. I get a sore throat from mold irritation.
Hi there, I'm sorry you're struggling! I'd look into getting an air purifier that is rated for mold, or else try a different clay that can dry faster without cracking, and use a gentle fan maybe.
Inspiring me to bust out my new slip trailer!!!
Wow. What a wonderful video. Beginning to end. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
great idea!
Hey, you do this on bonedry clay or bisque? 😊
Hi there, this is only done on finished pots. These are unglazed wild clay which is why it maybe looks like bisque or unfired clay, but they are vitrified and ready for use :)
Good idea! Thanks!
Thanks for saying so!
Great container!!
Thanks so much,very helpful ☕️🍩
There’s nothing g wrong with reclaiming no matter how big the piece! I keep it damp in plastic bags and wedge it up when needed over and over
This is great info thanks. The manual did not help me. I think it was for another model. One problem I have is that my switch will go on, but then that latch pops up and the cover for the start button falls down. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I got this second hand and it is my first time using it.
Hi there, it sounds like the latch needs to be adjusted. I'm assuming you're putting the mini cone in the kiln sitter like in the video. If the catch isn't staying down I think your flap / latch needs to be adjusted up. You'll see there's a little screw and a metal plate, you loosen the screw and raise the plate up. Sue Mcleod has a blog post about it if you google "adjust kiln sitter"
Hi! I have a question, how many new elements did you have to buy to replace all the elements of your kiln?
Hi! There are 8 elements in these kilns. I got mine from Euclids.
@@studiostiina840 thank you for answering! Your video was very helpful!
I'm glad it was helpful. You're very welcome!
Very clever. Nice concept, execution and presentation. Thanks for taking the time!

Beautiful talent.
Merci!
Thanks for this tip!!!!!!!!!❤
Thanks for watching! I hope you use the ideas in your own studio :)
Love your handles!
Thank you!
What is your slab mat made of, that's awesome!
What is this awesome system, is it a food tray rack? Does it come with the cover? So you don't have to individually wrap your items at all?
Hi! No individually wrapping anymore, nope! It's called a bun rack, for proofing bread in a bakery. I bought it from a restaurant supply store.
Ginette sent me here. I'm a beginner potter(very beginner!) Im setting up a space in Italy and she's right, your videos are fantastic, even studio tours like this are so helpful! How do you figure out the template sizes, trial and error?
Hello, thank you for coming to peek inside my space! I use a bit of trial and error yes, but templatemaker.nl removes a lot of the guesswork!
Thanks! Very efficient and helpful
I'm glad it was helpful! Thank you the PayPal tip. I appreciate it 💜
where did you get the 8 figure library stamp?
I got it from a small local office supply store in Saskatoon Canada!
Ingenious!!!!!
I love your idea of the mug dipper!!!!
I so agree with you on this! I am the same when watching people cutting out templates in the middle...feel uncomfortable...I make a lot of test tiles out of cut offs.
Clay scrimpers stick together Linda! :) Glad to hear you resonate with my work and style. Test tiles are great ways to use up off cuts!
Hi Steina, I am Linda from Iceland. Thanks for sharing this invention of yours. I love your ideas and the way you work. Your mugs are beautiful. I have been wanting to make one of these home made extruders but didn't know how/where to close it up at the end. Where did you get that test cap?
Hi Linda, thank you for your lovely comment. I got the test cap from the hardware store - it was with all the other pvc pipe fittings. :) good luck!
@@studiostiina840 Thank you for your reply. I am definitely going to check if I can get a pip end cap here..... Looking forward to try it out and experiment with a home made extruder!
@@studiostiina840 Sorry earlier, for writing Steina, not Stina.... It was not supposed to happen, but sometimes the fingers get in the way .... ;-) When I am trying to throw...they do all the time ;-) I like handbuilding, so I have never really stuck to the wheel and really exercised like I should.... Guess I am the impatient one when it comes to that.
What brand is your clay
Hi there. It's Plainsman, a Canadian clay.
I have the hardest time making templates with angles
I use "templatemaker.nl", google it and use the truncated cone template to help you make cups like this.
@@studiostiina840 oh my. Ty
I love how thin they are. Less than 1/4
Thank you! I am proud of that too. Thin but durable :)
Do you have instructions for making your tool with the bag and pinch clip?
Hi there, it's called a henna cone. There are dozens of tutorials online and I haven't made a detailed one myself. I watched a bunch of different ones to learn but I still found it quite difficult at first. If you search UA-cam for "roll henna cone blurberry buzz" and find her video with blue cellophane, that was my favourite video. Lots of practice and Keep trying 💜
