Hybrid & Kaki Persimmon Cold-Hardiness -- Principles, Observations & how to Protect Newer Trees
Persimmon cold-hardiness is a wily topic, where the hybrids are concerned. Here I talk a bit about their varying degrees of cold tolerance, the oft-undiscussed (but important) factor of wood ripening, and the overall climatic picture with regard to both hybrid and kaki persimmons.

Annonaceous Apprehensions Pt. 2 -- Quantifying Annonacin, Context & Limits of the Guadeloupe Study
Переглядів 62714 днів тому
NOTE: The annonacin toxicity is probably a separate thing from the alkaloid-based gastrointestinal distress seen when drying the fruit; these are likely separate phenomena. So I've been on the fence about making this video; invariably the subject rousts some people's dragons, but given the amount of misunderstanding out there I figured it was time to show this. This is how I quantify the annona...

England's Persimmon Tasting 2024 + American Hybrid Efforts
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Місяць тому
We travelled 1000 miles to attend the 2nd annual persimmon tasting and to document the most prolific persimmon breeding effort in the US. England's Orchard & Nursery in McKee, KY specializes in persimmon and has a great deal of original crosses, including many exclusive crosses, both hybrid and non, made by David Lavergne, Jerry Lehman, Donald Compton and others. Here's a brief account of the e...
Northern Vs. Southern American Persimmons - Can we tell the difference? (And how?)
Переглядів 779Місяць тому
There are two races of American persimmon in the US, roughly divided by the Ohio river; Northern (90 Chromosomes) and Southern (60 Chromosomes). IWe are currently in Kentucky where the ranges of both overlap somewhat. I went out into the woods to find some wild persimmon, and sit down to talk about the physical tendencies, and gray areas within the species.
Ukraine Hybrid Persimmons - Let's Meet Them! - Mckee, Kentucky
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Місяць тому
Cliff England grows a wide array of American and hybrid (& kaki) persimmons. Here we focus on some of the Ukrainian hybrids he has in his collection. These are 3rd and 4th generation crosses of Asian and American persimmons - bred for size, flavor, and productivity. Their flavors range from light and sugary to caramel rum-raisin. Notably absent here are Dar Sofiyivky and Pamyati Chernyaeva, as,...
Pawpaws -- August Budding Basics -- You CAN Graft! Let's make some trees!
Переглядів 6892 місяці тому
I did some August budding on about 50 trees. This is a type of green-on-green grafting that can be done in late summer. So I decided to make a video about it. This is a "documenting my education" type of video as I expand my repertoire into new kinds of grafting.

Zebra Swallowtail Hatch & Release -- Eurytides marcellus -- Insect Companions
Переглядів 2824 місяці тому
We've added several dozen Zebra Swallowtails to our grove of 40-something trees. As caterpillars they annihilate branches of pawpaw with reckless abandon. Will we regret it? They're a very interesting species, another member of a tropical family with a temperate representative, Eurytides marcellus is a denizen of the "kite swallowtail" group of butterflies, genera which feed on the leaves of An...
Bark Inlay Graft on Persimmon - Quick Video - June 2024 (in the Northeast)
Переглядів 3625 місяців тому
If you can whittle, you can graft. Here's how I do a quick (read: somewhat haphazard) bark inlay graft on persimmon. Though the graft union is initially weaker than some, this type of graft has very good success. I use this type of graft with rootstocks larger than the scion. This window of June is ideal mostly for the north(eastern) part of the US. As you get into warmer more southerly climate...

FRUIT -- the "Makawao" Green Sapote -- Original Tree on Maui, Hawaii -- Pouteria viridis
Переглядів 4299 місяців тому
The "Makawao" green sapote is derived from this tree, which is either the ortet, or offspring of this tree. It's several decades old now, and thriving at a low-mid elevation in Makawao, Maui. This is a tree I have been seeking for 10 years, and finally managed to locate last week. Originally part of a fruit crop trial, it now languishes in a field near Makawao Forest Reserve. It's everything I ...

How persimmon variety lelme
While I only Grow Miss Kim Kaki persimmon at my home in Maryland, according to the Wye Research Center’s publication “Persimmons for Maryland: An Alternative Crop or Home Fruit” Extensive damage at 0 applies to most cultivars, but those that are particularly hardy will have little to no damage and will fruit following a year reaching 0 degrees while others will survive and produce moderate crops after temps reaching -8. Cold hardy cultivars they list include Aizu Michirazu, Great Wall, Giboshi, Hagakushi, Kyungsun Ban-Si, Lantern, Niu-Nai, Pen, Peiping, Sagoki-si, Sheng, Techumseh, and Yamagaki. several other cultivars are listed as “notable” but were more recently acquired relative to the publication and they had less data on their cold hardiness (i.e. Miss Kim and Inchon). Great wall and Kyungsun Ban-Si are noted as being the most cold hardy of the group with Sheng being the least, but Sheng has produced fruit following a winter that reached -5 degrees. I don’t doubt your concerns about lignification at higher latitudes, but I would think there are several kaki cultivars to chose from for those seeking to grow persimmons in zone 6b. Again, this is just taken from the referenced document and experiments referenced within regarding 84 cultivars planted between 1966 and 1984.
I’m surprised that your opinion is that Benson is the best KSU cultivar. When picking cultivars for my first trees, I was encouraged to start with Shenandoah and KSU Chappell. No one had anything negative to say against Benson, but most preferred Chappell (at least for me to try as a newbie)
I tried seedless one first time it was tomato textured cloying sweet flavor. Was good but super sweet and not much else what are the tastiest varieties? Seedless or not and do you know about seed breeding and plant genetics?
The open top also keeps it from warming up too much and coming out of dormancy? Or use white/reflective wrap...
One may close the top in events of extreme cold. I leave it open for a simpler reason -- because of something I was taught "don't love your trees to death" - in that they need some exposure as they age, to acclimate to the environment.
I would be interested in knowing how winter humidity impacts cold tolerance. I live in a western mountain town at 4500 ft. There is a 75 foot Meader persimmon locally that has survived over the years hitting -25 F several time but our humidity is basically 5-10%...maybe at -20 F there is no humidity on the East coast either? In the summer, the lack of humidity works the other way and our night time temperatures regularly swing 30-40 degrees in a night so we have day highs in the 80-90s and night time in the 50-60s and accumulate less growing degree days. Minneapolis ripens tomatoes 3 weeks ahead of me even though they have lower highs and the same frost free growing season.
What was the fabric you used there? And where do you get it? Thanks!
it's just the frost-protection fabric sold at lowes or home depot
@ thanks!
Thanks for this information. I like seeing your videos.
In my opinion, persimmon Zima looks promising, but let's not rush, let's see
Do you know any information about the Windstar variety? What plant? What fruits? What's the taste? Early or late?
Just want to thank you for the 'Meet the Cultivar Series'. Having just planted 2 varieties, and still searching for the 3rd one to choose. Thank you, indeed!
Very informative video thank you! Just what I was looking for!
Why do you feel like turning your comment section off for "controversial" topics?
Hello Timothy. Woody Walker speaking. Thanks for the coverage. KY Legend "Titan" Pawpaw was quite presentable at Cliff's tasting event, after the hurricane rain/wind damage, and a ripening period off the tree of a week or more. My other varieties couldn't take that challenge, but this variety exceeded my expectations. 1:55 The KYL "Titan" fruit has some trouble with fruit-splitting, and the seeds are sterile.

Thank you for such an interesting review. I'm curious what is your top 5 pawpaw cultivars in terms of flavor?
I wonder what the 3 cultivars of pawpaw he chose for the second planting.
Nice 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Do you irrigate your paw paws?
I love this series. I bought KSU Atwood and Susquehanna to start my pawpaw journey. (never taste both of them)
1:41 A tree on the left in the background, with no leaf color change yet. What is it??
Which other varieties are in your top 5?
They still hold fruit even with yellow leaves? I thought the wild ones near me were all done by end of September. Maybe I should check them again. I didn't go as many times this year to harvest the wild ones. My personal trees are still very small.
Not sure why you pronounce Susquehanna the way you do. As a life-long resident of Susquehanna County, I've never heard it pronounced like that until Utubers started talking about the paw paw variety. Even Peterson pronounces it so rhymes with ""Oh Susanna". But otherwise very informative videos. Thanks for putting them out.
Thanks for the review. I've enjoyed watching all your "Meet the Cultivar" videos 👍
I have never seen round paw paws like that. I will give that cultivar a try
I was just thinking the other day that I wish you continued this series. I finally got some pawpaws to mature this year ! My susquehanna made about 8 pawpaws and a couple were as big as mangos. Absolutely divine taste ! Pineapple, bubblegum, mango and its odor was intoxicating. Can't wait for my overleese and wabash to set fruit. Thanks for all the info friend <3
Greetings from Wisconsin! You have the best Pawpaw channel! I pick my pawpaws the same way, by feel. They ripen from the inside out and must stay on the tree for the best flavor. I grow Shenandoah and Prolifics. They have proven to be easy to grow and hardy to -20°f. I gave away 100+ pounds of excess fruit to friends and neighbors this year! Thanks for all your advice and wisdom on this delicious fruit.
I hate to see so much plastic on the ground. Aside from that, beautiful farm. Landscape fabric= microplastic leaching into soil and into fruit. Hot sun & rain don't mix with plastic.
Very nice
❤❤❤
Cool...😊❤
Seems people are just taking the Ukrainian and Russian Persimmons and doing a little something and putting their name to it in some way.
I like your videos. I only wish they were longer. Please consider that a request.
Jackfruit in PA? That's wild! Has he gotten any fruit from them yet?
Hi! Now most popular variety is Dar of Sofievki. What's about it?

I had NO idea Cliff had a taste testing event! thank you!
Do any of the hybrids produce male blooms along with female blooms on the same tree?
2 videos ago also at cliffs orchard he said that the hybrid 'God's gift' specifically bore male flowers capable of pollinating asians hybrids and americans
It was good to meet you. The video came out fantastic. I’m glad someone is shining a light on such a beautiful property. You’re the man!!
Very cool
Thank you very much!

Thanks!
I enjoy your info. I visited Cliff in September. I was hoping to try Journey but it was already done. I’m in Ohio and have a small persimmon orchard. I’m excited for Dar Sofi and Chuchupaka!
tree growth habits appear to pulling more American persimmon than Asian? tall columnar? will they grow in low chill areas?
