Regain After Weight Loss Surgery: Statistics and Prevention
Just got my surgery date……Tuesday before Thanksgiving!!!! I am so excited!!!
Our stomachs have been permanently surgically altered. How is it functioning or what purpose is it serving after weight gain? Is it possible to reset & return to optimal weightloss if we go back to the basics, like post op instructions? Is the surgery ruined?
Hi there! Many times, weight gain is linked to eating "slider foods", which are foods that don't stay in your pouch long, like chips, breads, sweets, fried foods or liquid calories. It is absolutely possible to return to optimal weight loss by going back to protein first and non-starchy veggies second, with healthy whole grain carbs if we have room. The surgery is not ruined- we still have a great tool, we just have to respect it and work with it.
@ Thank you so much Kaki. You have always been so inspirational. You motivate me to keep pressing on.🌷
Thanks for the tips. I’m 2 years post op GB. My plan this year is to have a little of what looks appealing on the Thanksgiving table. I find it amazing how things I used to really enjoy are just ok now and not worth the space in my pouch. I am able to tolerate some desserts so I have to be mindful not to take one bite past satisfied. I will be busy trying to make connections with family you see only at the holidays to stay away from the temptation to nibble. I’ll be sure to keep up with fluid goals to stay satisfied. I like hot tea this time of year to stay satisfied. Best wishes to you for your surgery. Thanks for bringing us along. 🙏🏽
It sounds like you have a good plan for the day! I find the same thing regarding foods that I used to love are now just ok.
Thanks for the reminder that we do not owe anyone an explanation. One suggestion one of my friends does is she takes it home for later, and then gives it to someone else to eat it. Praying surgery goes smoothly.
Thank you! Good suggestion from your friend.
Excited for you and your upcoming lift surgery.
Thank you! I am excited too!
Husband and I are hosting Thanksgiving so we know I'll have choices that are bariatric friendly. I'm 8 months post RNY. I may have 1T of dessert if I have room after protein and veggies. I'll definitely take some Gas X and take it easy and stick to my usual portions. Some days my pouch is grouchy, other's it's ok.
It sounds like you have a good plan- and with you hosting you will have a real handle on things!
Wonderful informative video…thank you!!
I am glad that you enjoyed it!
Hey Kaki! I thought your surgery was this week so I had you on my mind. I hope everything goes well. I am being very thoughtful about Tgiving because my surgery won't be until after the first of the year. I don't want to have a food funeral mentality for my last "regular food" Tgiving.
Thank you :-) That is good thinking on not doing the "food funeral" mentality!!
My program doesn't allow coffee, but I had to go back to drinking it. I can't focus without it!
Me too!!
I’m 11 months post VSG. I’m still losing and hope to lose btw 20-40 more lbs. I have small sips with my meals. I get way more liquid if I drink out of a straw, so I do. I’ve not found either of these to impede my progress. I eat Tostitos with taco meat. I just measure and control my portions. For me, it’s really about truly learning moderation. Something I do struggle with is food noise. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks for sharing.
I struggle with food noise too. The best thing that I have found to deal with it is scheduled eating. For me, knowing that I am going to eat something again at a certain time helps keep those thoughts from becoming too pervasive. I usually eat something about every 3 hours while awake.
Thanks. I’ll try that.
I enjoyed this video and plan to put some of your suggestions in play. I was fortunate to be given a binder with tabbed inserts of info regarding progressing stages toward surgery and after at my first visit so I just added paper to write on. Great tips❤
I am so glad that you found the video useful! Good luck!
Love this video! I have crunchy snacks. I remember my surgeon saying should stay away from chips, pretzels crackers etc. forever! I did for at least 18m and then I decided I could have a portion and even if I have a few more the world won’t end. I’ve maintained my weight and I don’t eat them every day. I follow the rest of the rules. I’m 2 years post op.
I had pretzels for the first time on my recent trip- I started eating air popped popcorn as well recently. Portion size and awareness is the key in things if you really enjoy them!
I love watching your videos. I’m planning on having the bariatric sleeve surgery. Very informative and love your accent.
Thanks! I am glad that you are enjoying them. Do you have your surgery scheduled?
@ no surgery scheduled yet but scheduled for my Dr Consult Dec 3. I’m trying to learn all I can.
@@kathleenrichards7751 That is a great plan- I did the same thing :-) Good luck!
@ Thank you. I’ll keep you up to date.
Well, Kaki, you little rebel!
Haha! You know it! Tylenol is my party drug 🤣
Carbonated drinks, eating carbohydrates and using straws are all fine on my program. I have rough guidelines I follow (min. protein and fluid goals). I try not to exceed 80g carbs a day (which isn’t just crackers or wraps but fruit and cereals too). I’m averaging less than 900 calories a day (not depriving myself that’s just what my body fits in and where my portion sizes are at right now). I even have a 20g no sugar / 56 calorie chocolate bar most days. I dump if I have real sugar. I had 19kg to lose at the start of my pre-op diet (revision from sleeve to bypass as I didn’t lose enough weight and had reflux develop) and I have 8.5kg to go. Clearly it’s not doing me any harm because I make sure I’ve met my fluid and protein goals for the day before I have it. I’ve made many food swaps so I can have my lil treat without sacrificing on flavour or my nutrient requirements. My dietician encouraged me to learn how to eat without this being a diet. It’s still early days but I feel I’ve found my groove/balance 😀
Awesome!! It sounds like you have a good plan and it is successful! Some of these recommendations are very outdated and have no studies to back them up. In the videos that I posted links to, surgeons talk about how some of these things appear to have just come out of the ether and when they look for scientific data it does not exist.
Super helpful video. My weight loss has slowed down. I’ve lost 105 pounds. I keep bouncing between 185 and 188 lbs. I know I’m eating too many carbs. But I’m not ready for maintenance. I still want to lose another 25 lbs or so. I need to go back to the basics. I don’t want to be backsliding.
It sounds like you know the plan to get things moving again :-) I had my 2 year surgical and dietitian follow up this week. The dietitian said, to sum it up, if you need to lose, decrease carbs. They sneak up on you!
I am seven days post op (sleeve) and love the timing of this video! 🙂. Protein drinks taste miserably sweet to me, and anything with artificial sweetener has never appealed to my taste (even before surgery). So, I do find the liquid stage challenging even though I am very thankful I have no physical problems hitting my fluid intake daily. Your encouraging words reenforce what I tell myself every day.....small season in a long journey. Worth it. Wait it out. Time does pass, and I don't think it is truly physical hunger that I feel as much as a desire for flavor. (I'm going to try your V-8! That's new to me!). I had a lot of scar tissue from a previous lapband, so my surgeon said it is extra important for me to not rush healing. I have no intention of doing so, but the days do feel a little long when I'm mostly just refilling my water bottle. Your video is special to me, and I will be rewatching in days to come.
I am so glad that the video was helpful!! You are so smart not to rush things, especially in your situation. It will be so worth it in the end!
Hi Kaki, you talk about getting clear liquid diet on the first day. Then on the second day you were allowed a full liquid diet and you mentioned diet V8 Splash juice, is it OK to have fruit juices at that time?
Hi there! My plan allowed for the "diet" juice like V8 Splash that is labelled as diet. I would say just pay attention to your body, if it irritates your stomach in any way, back off, otherwise I found it a good source of hydration.
@ what about diet Pedialyte which provides important electrolytes.
@@rachelkogan4799 I would think that would be ok if it did not contain sugar.
I lived on my homemade refried beans and yogurt for months.....not something I ate much before....at 11 months still my grab and go foods...my freezer still has 3 oz cups of beans ready to go add in some cheese....and I am still loving them!
Awesome!!!
What do you do when you don’t like dark meat before surgery? I think it taste dirty. I’m scared to try since my surgery.
Hi there! I did not like dark meat either before surgery, but found that I do like it after. I would suggest try a small amount and see. Your taste really does change.
I've had the sleeve and been revised to bypass. The only issue I had with the sleeve was potatoes. With the bypass, rice and pasta feel me painfully fast. Somedays some foods make me feel sick, then other days that same food doesn't.
Isn't it funny how some days things sit well and some days they don't?
Thank you for this. I'm almost 7 months post RNY and have had a few days where my stomach did not tolerate eggs, etc. 2 oz every few hours of protein gets me by as does waiting 1-2 minutes between bites.
You are welcome! Eggs seem to be a sticking point for lots of folks.
Do you track how much protein you eat every day?
I do! I use the app Lose It and track my food intake, which calculates macros like protein, carbs and fats.
Hi kaki, i was just wondering how you get to do trips that go multiple places. I would like to do something like that but i have no idea where to start. Thanks in advance
Hi there! The trips that I have done since Covid are private ones that I go on with a friend or two. I figure out where we want to go, then google "private trips" to where ever that is and email travel companies. I also travel some with women's tour groups when I don't have a friend to go with. I am going to Argentina and Chile next spring with one.
Your scars look fabulous and are only going to get better!
Thank you!
I love the calm, reassuring way you speak. I’m having surgery in a week. You look fabulous! I love how everything is looking for you. Thank you for sharing!🙏🏻🥰
Thank you and good luck with your upcoming surgery!

Aww, thank you!
Thank you for being so honest and open. I know those fears very well as I have dieted so many times and had those feelings only to eventually fulfill that fear. Your words bring strength and validation.
Thank you- so many times I feel that I have manifested my fears, so hearing someone else acknowledge that helps!
Very informative. I just started my journal.
Awesome!
You are just an incredible woman!
Thank you!!
Thank you for this video. I am still going thru all my nutrition appts and all that. No surgery date yet. But I am learning so much from you and others I have watched. Oh and I love the song that plays at the beginning of your videos.
Glad that you are finding the videos helpful- good luck!!

You have done so well. You look good. I hope everything goes good for me when I have my gastric bypass, hopefully in the spring of 2025..

It is on my list 🙂
Hi Kaki. So glad you are enjoying your trip. I like the way you talked about what you couldn't have is nothing compared to what you have gained. I am in the middle of doing all the nutrition visits. I have to do 9 instead of 6 to help with my relationship with food. Have a safe trip home
Thank you! The more nutrition visits the better, I think. I actually did zoom visits with another bariatric dietitian for additional input and am glad that I did.
So glad you’re having a good time! You’re so right the things we give up don’t compare to what we gain. I completely understand the “missing out “ feeling. Thankfully it doesn’t last long especially when you find an alternative. Safe travels!
Thank you!
Hey Kaki thank you for the authentic and honest dialogue. I’m 3 weeks post op and for the last whole week I have not lost anything. 8 days in fact. It’s crushing and I wonder if this is just not going to work for me. I fear that I’m just not going to lose anything else and that this has all been for nothing. I can’t believe I haven’t lost anything when I’m eating next to nothing! How did you break your stalls?
I am 7 weeks post op and I went 2 weeks without losing anything my surgeon said it is normal to do that. I had the same feelings you are having. I’m starting to lose again so don’t give up hope! It will happen! Much love and good luck! ~Patty
Hi there! This can be very normal! Things will get moving- I have never seen someone that it didn't. I know this must be very frustrating and scary but know that it will pass. Just keep doing what you are supposed to do and stay in touch with your team. A stall at three weeks is super common- here is a video that a bariatric surgeon made about it: ua-cam.com/video/8L1SHIromvw/v-deo.html

Thank you, Kaki. You are so inspiring. I met with my surgeon last week. Unfortunately, surgery will not be this year because the soonest they can schedule my endoscopy is early January. Staying positive!
I know the wait can be frustrating 😞But at least things are heading towards surgery! Good luck!
It will be worth it
@@jallen5300 it sure will!

That's awesome Kaki! That's a great NSV. Glad you are enjoying your trip.
Thanks!
Hi Kaki I’m a new subscriber and had my surgery 3 weeks ago . Love your transparency and honesty . I wonder why only egg whites are allowed and not the full egg post surgery
Congrats on your surgery!! My program allowed whole eggs, but I could only tolerate the egg whites- the yolks made me super nauseous. It could be your program adapted to this to save folks going through those symptoms. I was probably six mos post op before I could eat the whole egg.
I watched this video before I left for the hospital. I'm now on week 4 PO! Thanks Kaki!
Awesome- congrats on your surgery!!
