Awesome. When was this?
December 2023 at Madrona.
Thanks for creating this video. Please post more. At what depth was its den? Did you dive a single tank?
Thank you for watching, I have lots of octopus footage and try to get more weekly. This den is shallow, maybe 30 feet (10 meters), yes I dove a single tank but it's shallow, I am fairly good on air, and when you're not moving at all you can really stretch it out!
amazing just finished watching Nautilus ev channel from Palau in the pacific such good stuff.
Cool, yes I enjoy watching what they are finding far beyond the depths we can go!
This is so beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing! I really hope to see your new friend again. 🥰🐙
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it! Sadly, this octopus has moved onto another den, I may have found it but so far have not had the same interaction.
I kept re-watching your video and admiring its quality. Also, thank you for detail information about your equipment and camera settings. Regarding ISO of 12800, I am confused why you filmed at night using ISO 12800, rather than 640, as during night dives we fully rely on video lights, which provide sufficient light to use the lowest native ISO. Another question is about using your underwater monitor. As I am planning to buy one, could you please explain what picture profile your monitor shows? As you filmed using PP8 (SLOG3), which is very "washed-out" without a lut, does your monitor shows a "washed-out" picture or it shows exactly what the camera's back screen shows after applying Sony's internal lut "SLOG3 to Rec 709"? Many thanks.
Thank you! I have shot in lower ISO at night too but I find that my exposure is just better at the native ISO of 12800. At the lower ISO I need to bring my lights closer and change their position which in our water introduces lots of backscatter and particulate. The underwater monitor shows exactly what the camera would show, it's essentially mirroring that screen and I have the gamma assist turned on for SLOG3. The monitor doesn't show it as washed out, it shows it as it should be. The monitor is a must have if you ask me.

Dbxf❤ is the most underrated game
That’s a big boy right there weren’t you afraid?
Only afraid for the diver it was stalking, lol!
Hi, great video!!! I’m looking for a underwater marco lens for my gopro 9. 1 quick question, do you use red filter?
Fantastic video, beautifully shot. Subscribed!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that!
This is the last thing I wanted to see as a new diver and local
Don't worry, Tim survived!
Yoooo this is so far the best video I've seen about port hardy!!!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Some epic scenes, nice work! 👏
Thank you! The good visibility helped out quite a bit!
Beautiful footage! Was such a please meeting and diving with you out there! : )
Thank you Olivia! Yes, it was very nice to meet you too, I always love meeting other underwater creators.
Wow! Amazing footage! I loved the huge aggregations of hooded nudis! Glad the viz was better than our spring trip!
Thanks Max! Yes, there were thousands and thousands of hooded nudi's and yes the viz was substantially better.
Carl, let's get you to 1,000 subs this year :)
I am trying! I guess my content just isn't that enticing or exciting, lol.
Amazing video, Carl. We are dying to see this in HDR though haha
Thank you! I have been playing a bit with the HDR workflow. Soon.
Carl that that was so good I especially loved the Gangster’s paradise portion. Love it thanks so much
Thank you so much Mark, glad you enjoyed it!
So, what's the water temperature? 😂
8 degrees celcius or so... It's not too bad with thermals, drysuit, and a heated vest!
nice need to get up to port hardy this winter.
Not sure anyone is doing charters through the winter, but there is some pretty good shore diving for sure!
Loooooove this!! That was such an amazing trip! Also love all my cameos hahaha
Thank you, yes, an amazing place and so close to home too. Yes, you got a lot of cameos, lol. I love showing the scale.
Beautiful
Thank you Brenda!!
This is gorgeous Carl! Amazing footage and super music mix. Makes me want to return to Port Hardy right now.
Thank you Marnie! I have been pre-screening music for a few months lol.
This is great! Nice job Carl!
Thank you Shane, and thank you for coming along!!!
Incredible vid! Thank you!
Awesome video!!🤩
Where were you diving in the first 2 clips?
Oak Leaf Park and Tyee Cove.
@@scubabc6701 Thank you! I appreciate the quick response!!
I visited last Thursday. There was not a lot of salmon, but i saw salmon in 1 metr length.
Your content is always so beautiful and awesome 🐙
Thank you very much! You're content is pretty great too!
Madrona point isnt in bc?
@@terpnoid Yes, it is in BC, on Vancouver Island.
Real life lovecraftian entity
Pretty good footage here. I guess it's a out getting so close you can't seethe corner issues the lens has. I'm thinking of getting the +15, shooting in 5.3K and cropping to 4K
Yes, you need to get close, there is definitely a sweet spot... I feel the +15 will be too much, you'd need to be really close, and without the ability to manually focus, it's going to be tough to get good footage. I have moved on from my GoPro though and am now shooting with a Sony A7Siii in a proper underwater housing.
@scubabc6701 I shoot stills with my d500 and retra stores with a variety of lenses but feel like I want to do a bit more video with the gopro as b roll. I'm also due to to WA / VI at some point as you must have some of the best cold water diving! @@scubabc6701
@@scubabc6701would you say there are any other options than the macro mate for gopro macro?
@@sinetwo I think the Macro mate is pretty much the best option still.
Fantastic Shot!
Thank You!
Enjoyed the beauty, thanks
Thank You!
Dove there years ago with the previous owners. A great resortand fantastic diving.Would reconnend i.
Nice work, love it.
Those schools of yellowtail rockfish were beautiful!
I can't wait to get back up there 💙🤿
Great quality footage!
Thank you very much!
I like your video, especially the octopus and nudibranchs. Not sure I understand why "Gyro Stabilized" footage require more work in post production? Also, I assume that you filmed the octopus with 16-35 mm lens. How did you filmed its eye? Using the same lens? Regarding the 90 mm lens, how small and how big the subject could you film with this lens.
@DiversLens Hey there, sorry for the late reply. Gyro stabilized footage must be run through Sony's catalyst software first, prior to editing, so it adds another layer to editing the video. This footage was a mixture of 16-35mm and the Sony 90mm macro lens. The 90mm is very impressive. I can film subjects the size of a pea or a grain of rice without issue. Add a +5 diopter and it's even better. Hope that answers your questions!
@@scubabc6701 Thank you for your reply!
@@scubabc6701 I see that you used SLOG3 and HLG3 picture profiles. Which one is better in your opinion?
@@DiversLens SLOG3 is far superior once you learn how to color grade it. HLG3 I could never get the colors right.
@@scubabc6701 Thank you! I had some troubles with HLG3 footage using DaVinci, but it works fine with FCPX. I have to try SLOG3.
Quality of footage is impressive!
@@DiversLens Thank you!
I like the upbeat feeling to this one. Keep it up Carl
Thanks Garrett!
Such an eerie beauty to that water.
It's beautiful down there for sure.
Question: Dome port direct on the 120mm adapter? Or do you have an extension between adapter and port? Great lens! Great shots!
Thank you! The 8" dome port is mounted direct onto a 29mm extension right to the housing. The dome is very close to the camera.
I think I will try it on my FX30 in my Nauticam housing.
@@holgeripsen Give it a try! It's a pretty impressive lens! I'll be using it a lot when the visibility is good and there is lots of ambient light.
@@scubabc6701 I was thinking of using it the next wrack diving safari in Egypt. I was not so happy with the angle of my sigma 24-70 art inside of the wracks last year on Gozo. I brought a insta 360 ace pro max mounted on the domeport. But in really good conditions a 10mm autofocus of this quality is really an option. Thanks for sharing your impressions! Great movies you have us here on UA-cam. I really wanna come to BC in the future for diving. Regards Holger
@@holgeripsen Yes, this would be an amazing lens for wrecks. I think I'll be diving one of our local wrecks on Sunday so I hope to try it out then. 24-70 isn't that wide of a lens, not compared to this one anyway. The ambient lighting needs to be really good or this lens will really hunt for focus.
Wow! What an incredible encounter! It's so cool when they aren't afraid of you and you can watch their natural behaviour. Super interesting!
Yes, it was awesome! Sadly, this octo seems to have moved on from the den I was finding it at.
What an amazing trip! Was so cool to see some basket stars!
The viz could have been better, lol, but yes it's still an amazing place to dive. Can't wait for Barkley coming up fast!
Wow!!! Great shots!
Thank you!!!
@@scubabc6701 Bro! That's Nat Geo quality! Showcasing one of the best shore reef dives on the island in my opinion. Incredible channel and effort into all you both do! wow!
I've always loved a picture of someone taking a picture underwater! Beautiful!
@@submrg Thank you so much!
Cool to see some wide shots! Great viz!
Thanks Max! Yes, it the viz was fantastic last night.
Beautiful video. I also dove the area May 4-10 this year and agree some days and locations were quite low viz for the first 50ft or so, but then became a good 30ft viz or more below 70ft. Dive site viz definitely varied greatly. We did 3 dives per day and I racked up a lot of time between 70-95ft on this trip. Yeah, it's dark down there, so bring lights as you said. As your vid shows, hard to find a spot that isn't 100% covered. Amazing area :)
Thanks! I have been going there annually same time of year and the viz has been fantastic but man, this year it was brutal. We could maybe see 3 to 4 feet? And it was very heavy sediment in the water, so my lights were pretty much useless. It didn't even clear up at 80 feet, until the final day. Heading back in October so it should be substantially better. It is certainly a very special area to dive!
Nice video! Do you recommend to look for them in winter?
December to February is when we've had our best luck!
