[4K] The Colours of Late Autumn | Fujifilm X-T20
I stumbled upon a congregation of giants, their rock-skinned faces soft and damp to touch. Countless yellow fingers sprouted their many arms, adorned with odd clusters of red and blue. Here, I glimpsed the vibrant joys of mid-November; a season of dullness witnessed for the deciduous beauty it discloses to the patient and gentle.

Here's an attempt to create something quiet, slow and beautiful from one my favourite video game series. Where Ubisoft suggest that surveillance capitalism and techno-militaristic states can only be overcome through protest and violence, I believe that contemplation is, in reality, a more powerful weapon: a rebellion against the culture of speed, distraction and anger so conducive to reinforcin...

"The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him." Mark 1:12-13 (ESVUK) Shalom.

Barbara (2012) | Scene Analysis

A short video essay breaking down a scene from Christian Petzold's Barbara (2012), written and edited for my MSt in Film Aesthetics at the University of Oxford. I apply a reading of Thomas Elsaesser's essay, 'Anatomy Lesson of a Vanished Country', published in 'European Cinema and Continental Philosophy: Film As Thought Experiment' (Bloomsbury, 2018), exploring the political stranger as an abje...

For the past decade, I've been fascinated by the ways in which cameras can transform our perception of time and space. When seen through a viewfinder, seemingly anything can become a revelation of beauty, or else the subject of intense contemplation. Photography is the witness of a world redeemed from insignificance. I spend a fair amount of time sitting at my desk adjacent to the window, and i...
Noise
Переглядів 374 роки тому
I drew my attention into the darkness, and all I saw and heard was noise; the image between objects, the sounds between words, the space between places drowning in the polluted tides of a static ocean, head pushed beneath the waves. The war of the ants is fought at sea.

This was filmed by pointing mis-aligned phone camera lenses at the sun as it diffuses through the gentle waves of a harbour. Nearby, a guitar sings.
Ma (Amor Vacui)
Переглядів 1694 роки тому
kenoticlove.wordpress.com/2020/01/21/ma-amor-vacui/ This film is about space, though it wears the face of two places I have lived. It is somewhere that you know, even if you have never set foot on these grounds: it is the space of intentional emptiness which punctuates our lives and our worlds. 'Ma' is, as such, what we see when nothing confronts us: not in the absence of confrontation, but in ...
Inscape: Southampton

Jesuit theologian Walter Burghardt described contemplation is “a long, loving look at the real", but he might as well have been describing cinema. This was created as a response to the unpredictability of being a student. Inspired by Joseph Cornell, Stan Brakhage, James Benning, Julie Brook, and Peter Hutton. Filmed on Fujfilm X-T20 in Southampton, Hampshire. ...
Inscape: Bransgore

For Gerard Manley Hopkins, everything in the universe is characterised by 'inscape': the distinctive, dynamic design that constitutes all individual identities. Humans, as the most individually distinctive beings, are able to recognise other inscapes in the act of 'instress', allowing us insight into God's divine creativity through a contemplative engagement with our surroundings. This film is ...
I've it in the Italian language version, released by Magic Press in 2008, collected in a single book "l'alba del guerriero" (there are more volumes released by Magic Press). I have to say that looking at the original speech balloons, it looks way better than smaller and squeezed font in the Italian version. I only have maybe one or two original progs but hope it's never too late to start collecting it.
love the coloring! 😍
Thank you so much! I was struck by the diversity of colours around me, and wanted to share with everyone 😅
This is stunning Jonny. I get really strong vibes of Malick, which is a huge compliment!
Thank you for your kind words. Any comparison to Malick is an honour!
what does the note say?
The note says about a rendez-vous with a guy from West Germany in the forest.
Oi

Should be a film version surely.
There is a film in development
Ah the perfect ambience for reading books on philosophical existentialism :) Btw, would you happen to be the same Rogers who used to have the TNRPLA blog sometime ago?
Amazing, glad I could provide that! And yeah, that's right! I have closed down that blog, but I still post occasionally on Kenotic Love (and write for some other organisations too).
this is pure meditative cinema, i like how you shot this film. I wouldn't even call this pretentious. great work.
Thank you so much, that means a lot!
great work
Cheers, thanks for watching!
Thank you for viewing this very beautiful
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it :)
Thank you!! My second language is English this video made me understand deeply the meaning of "shifting shadows". Thanks again, God bless you. 🙏
Thank you for the encouragement, Isela! I'm glad I can help you understand what this means. God bless you too :)
How is the weather in Poland in February?
Tony Marin Cold, from what I remember! It was mostly dry, but there was a little snow at times
Im from California so probably their cold is freezing compared to ours. We dont get snow. Im about my tickets either February or may since their cheaper
@@tonymarin909 I see -- it probably would be colder for you! I'm from the UK, so their February felt comparable to here. Hope you have a great time!
CHALLENGERS without Kirby? Just not really the Challengers...to me. His approach was critical. To me.
just watch No Home Movie by Chantal Akerman instead
Back in the day when Strontium Dog was the business
Are the trees themselves beautiful enough to be filmed without context? If so, then why are none of the shots longer than 10 seconds? instead of contemplating the subtle majesty of nature the short seems to want to be over as soon as possible. Why can we only hear a minimalist, amorphous score? Aren't we missing something crucial to wind in the trees if you cut the sound? When Griffith directed he combined numerous techniques and perspectives to push the medium of film, and there was always something connecting each different take, cut to cut. All these clips seem disjointed as they fly by, blending together. Like watching a long line of train cars passing; Yes their all different and they may contain unique cargo, but why should I care?
Thank you for your comment, this is a really interesting response. I will first admit that at least part of my decision to only shoot short clips was a matter of practicality, since I was limited by battery life and space on my SD card. As regards for the sound, again, I have very limited sound recording apparatus, so that fed into my decision to implement limited an amorphous understand (edited from recordings of wind). That said, I understand your concern. The way I see it, however, is that a contemplative film's disjointedness is precisely why it can be interesting: because each scene or shot or composition does not flow directly from any pattern or narrative development, the viewer becomes attentive to every subtle detail, responding to each moment as it emerges on the screen (rather as consequence to an over-arching narrative system that is rarely evident in our actual experience of the world). This is inspired by my broader views on the aesthetics of nature (of which I am writing about for my undergraduate philosophy dissertation): I think we need to be more contemplatively open to respond to unexpected changes in external (and internal) stimuli in order to appreciate what each moment is disclosing, or presenting to us. I don't think pre-defined narrative arcs that we expect cinema to provide can really justify the essential spontaneity of beauty's disclosure in our ordinary experience of nature. The minimalist sound hence further invites us into a contemplative engagement with an aura of unexpected revelation. I apologise, however, if I have offended you. I do not wish to challenge or undermine developments in cinema; I wish only to explore and understand how we should engage with the world.
Nice. Can i ask, what settings did you have your 700D at?
Thanks! I can't remember the specific settings, but the camera does have a good automatic mode. This was quite early on in my use of the camera, so it's quite likely I relied mostly on automatic modes.
Beautifully written and presented. Thank you.
Dude you are a seriously talented film maker. You cinematography and camera handling are so impressive. Especially with that fz150. This looks like it was filmed with thousands of dollars of gear with a camera worth 5 times as much
Ah, thank you! I'm glad you appreciate this. I think it really is about how you use the technology you have, as with a lot in life; making a lot out of a little. Thanks for watching :)
Which settings did you use on your fz150 while filming?
I really can't remember exactly what I used, and I haven't used my fz150 for quite a while now, but I do think it's got an impressive intelligent automatic setting. Sorry I couldn't be more help there.
All good I'll be playing around with it :)
Amazing work man. I just bought this camera used for $150. I'm now very excited to learn to use it as well as you. You are super skilled to get this quality out of a point and shoot. Thank you.
NickjK2803 Ah, thank you! That's made my day. But yeah, I really don't think cinematography needs expensive kit -- I do think it's all about using what you have. I wish you the best of luck with everything.
You're absolutely right about that, as you've clearly demonstrated. You've inspired me to make the most of what I've got and not fall into the trap of thinking I need more and better to achieve what I want. I now believe I can make acceptable music vids for my work ( with some practice first ofcourse lol ). Thanks again for the inspiration!
with DMC fz 150?
This was taken with a GoPro Hero 3 and a Canon 700D
philippiansfoureigh do you have somethig Recorder with the DMC fz 150?
I've got a few videos from a while ago. Here's s a few: ua-cam.com/video/1JcYHCIztK4/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/0Vbg5-w73Cs/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/djMQK-NzmZw/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/BPBkrTIENYs/v-deo.html

aimun Thanks for watching!
Dredd, Marshal Law, Slaine, Jonny Alpha. All anti heros. All far more superior to any superhero crap.
Well said. Marvel and Dc just regurgitate the same stories over and over and when they've exhausted those they reset the universe with some big bad and do it all again. 2000AD the galaxy's greatest comic.
2000AD's answer to Conan the Barbarian!
Slaine in warp spasm fury mode would literally rip Conans arms off...🤔
What camera was this recorded on?
Well edited, looks pro I have FZ150 too....
Thanks for watching! It's a brilliant camera for what it's worth.
Yes I also use a Nikon D3200.... all the best Rik....
Great!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Looks really good, enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching!
Interesting concept :)
Thanks! ...I think it's obvious that I ran out of ideas and footage half-way through the project, though....
Haha, still looks good though.
Hi. Wich software do you used to edit the movie effect? Thanks
Hey Diego - thanks for watching! To edit this footage, I used Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. The colouring was achieved with the 'Magic Bullet Colorista Free" add-on, but I otherwise used the softwares' in-built functions.
great camera
Thanks for sharing. I hope to go there one day, I'm in the USA (Philadelphia) and have young kids so, it would be a little difficult to go at the moment. But one day for sure! Must be an experience!
Thanks for watching! I don't have much more to say than what is shown in the video (and my other comment on this), but I'd highly recommend going there if you get the chance.
I would never be able to guess the song, but I did find myself thinking there was a theme behind the images for a very short length of time. Well done, fantastic as always.
You might find this interesting: Hollis Frampton: Zorn's Lemma 1970
Thanks for watching Tyreiss - it was a very strange, but inarguably rewarding experience. I was expecting it to be considerably more miserable than it actually was... we heard stories of survival and goodness that happened within these horrible conditions, which I brought back as being as (if not, more) powerful as the suffering that was endured, with all respect to those that did suffer. Maybe it's my emotional ego preventing me from fully comprehending the severity of the situation, but to think that even a simple act of kindness could exist in such a backdrop, and that people have survived such experiences, really does give me a bit more hope in humanity.
That was really interesting how did it feel being in such a tense, dark and daunting place?
Very nice!! I want more :)
