    Hello Sherry, you are doing very well on your plot so far! Keep going, small steps it can get very overwhelming in the garden or plot especially as the weather is so changable, I was out in my garden last night putting in some poor flowers that needed to go in the ground & found two big slugs on the top of my netting covering the broccoli bed! Slugs everywhere, but things still manage to grow some how. Just keep doing a little at a time, you will get there in the end! Suexx🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

    What a great job you are doing Sherry - excellent task getting the guttering up to capture the rain. It would be a good idea to cover the IBC opening with some very fine mesh ie. tights to capture debris and stop it polluting the water in the tank - netting the brassica is essential to stop birds from pecking at the plants but the pea and bean netting isn't suitable for this purpose plus it is too low. More and taller canes are needed not only around the bed but some with in and topped with eg yoghurt pots to stop the canes coming through the netting. it needs to be taught so birds and animals don't get entwined in it. Pidgeon's will sit on netting weighting it down so they can get to the crops so a good height is essential to stop the blighters. Another method to support netting that is often used on allotments is the blue water pipes arched across the beds with scaffold netting as the cover usually held down securely with bricks. - netting is not going to stop slugs - Gosh your site is very windy I would makes plans now to anchor the grow house down before the autumn/winter winds set in these type of growing structures are not known as 'Blow away tunnels' for nothing. A couple of methods I've seen used to secure them are 1. hammer in by about 18 inches stakes inside the tunnel in each corner and attach the metal frame to them 2. Two or three wide webbing straps thrown over the outside and securely anchored in the ground with very long tent pegs. Combining both of these methods will give a chance of it not blowing away You are making such good progress 👍👍

    Hi 🖐🖐 the archway is going to look fabulous - the pea and bean netting you have used might not be strong enough for heavier crops such as pumpkins - as you are on a very windy site the archway might need reinforcing. I would get some tree stakes and, drive them in by about 18 inches at the point you have cable tied them together and then wire them all together for added strength. when the archways are covered in any crop it will act as a sail so need to be very robust - generally speaking things going into the ground need to be driven in much deeper than you are doing at the moment to avoid things collapsing - PLEASE it is wise to get a first aid box to put in the summerhouse as accidents do happen a lot on allotment plots. Been there done that got the cuts to prove it and check if your tetanus vaccination is up to date I love the scarecrow and offer Matilda as a name for her 😊😊

    Yes! You can grow the patio fruit trees in containers. They are dwarf varieties that work well for that. Google container gardening with fruit trees. You really want to stick to dwarfvarieties otherwise you wont be able to reach the fruit in the top of the full size varieties. Be sure to read the tag taking note of the mature height and width before buying a plant. The unpicked fruit from a tree that's too tall will drop from the tree littering your site with rotting fruit which attract rodents. You'll don't want to spend the entire season cleaning up rotten fruit. I came across a video by a gardener whose name I've forgotten who planted an mini orchard in his backyard using only dwarf fruit trees. He kept them pruned to just under 7 feet tall. He didn't even need a ladder to harvest the fruit. Hope this helps.

  • @tstrong7910
    @tstrong7910 25 днів тому

    Great work today🎉 You may want to consider bringing a folding chair, wide brimmed straw hat and a water bottle with you to the allotment until you get settled in. That way you'll have a spot ti sit and take a break to rehydrate during these hot summer days. Also, just a suggestion for you. Remove the grass past the edges of the polytunnel and cover that area with a weed barrier. Otherwise the grass will regrow all along the inside edge of the poly tunnel.

    Hi 👍 To the progress you are making on your new plot - great to see you labelling the seeds you are sowing - good idea to net the beds once seeds are sown or things planted out - radicchio is a type of chicory - salad leaves and radish are both quick growing so in the other half of the bed these are the crops to plan and are both good for succession planting. Sow a couple of rows then two or three weeks later grow some more - on your brassica bed you could also sow quick maturing salads, as these will be ready to pick before the brassicas have grown big and shaded them out - get that guttering up ASAP while we are having rain because if we do get any dry weather you will very quickly run out of water and you won't be able to bring enough down and you won't want the stress - do a reconnoitre over to the water bowser the landlord has put in. and fill your water bottles up there - use your car more for transporting things from the front of the site to your plot. Drive on fill your bags/bottles then drive to your plot - great use of those bags for life to fill and carry stuff - keep hold of those empty compost bags there are a multitude of uses on the plot - I would be tempted to dig your pond a little deeper as it is very shallow and very open to the elements so will dry up very quickly. Just think how quickly a big puddle dries up in the heat - as the ground is sooooo hard get yourself a mallet and metal bar so you can drive canes etc into a decent depth without breaking them - have a tray bag for your tools so you know where they are when you want them - BE NICE TO YOURSELF........... TREAT YOURSELF TO A NICE SEAT FOR THE SUMMERHOUSE. Somewhere to rest and to enjoy a nice cuppa while you either plan or look back on your days toil These comments are NOT criticism in any way but ment as hints and tips. Please feel free to ignore. All's looking good 👍😁👍

      Ive managed to crastily put the guttering up, I’ve found that I need some other bits for it to fix it up properly, but for now 🤞🏼 it’ll hopefully do the job to collect some water. Filling barrels and bottles up constantly was starting to wear thin for sure 😅😂. I think you’re right about the pond, I think it needs to be deeper so it’s definitely another job being added to the list of things to do. Looking great! I'm sure you've seen this before from other allotment channels but collecting water from your shed roof by connecting a gutter and pipe to your IBC would really maximize your IBC water storage. Danny @grownup has a video on this. Keep up the good work.❤ Also, add sticks to raise the middle of the net over your brassicas so the net is not touching any plants to keep the slugs and snails from reaching the plants by crawling on the net until you can make some hoops to hold the net up.

    tip for the future..... after digging up turf you should stack grass side down to stop it re growing it will then break down into a good crumbly texture. Alternately use a thin base in the bottom of the raised beds 👍👍

    Really looking good Sherry! Well done. You'll be surprised how resilient tomatoes can be. Just one thing, the canes in the poly tunnel, put something over the top (little bottles) coz over time the sheeting will keep hitting them in the wind and breakthrough the plastic, just from experience that's all. But keep up the good work x

    I have loads of rhubarb down on my allotment and really look forward to crumbles and pies. Its the leaves that are poisonous but I just put these on the compost heap. I'm 74 and so far haven't been poisoned! Having moved to a new home 5 years ago with only a tiny garden I got an allotment with my daughter and we are really enjoying it. You have hit a really difficult year to start as everyone is saying how difficult it is to get things going but you are doing great. Love your pond; sadly we are not allowed them on our site.

      Is there a rule of thumb as to where you cut the leaves off, such as so many cm’s below? I LOVE rhubarb crumble 😍 It’s so lovely that you’re sharing a plot with your daughter 🥰 x

      @@SherrysAllotment no I just twist the leaves off probably about an inch below where they leave the stem and then peel the outer layer off. Its best not to let it get too big or the stems get a bit stringy. I'm sure if you search for how to pick and prepare rhubarb there will be some videos if your not sure

    We really just need a balance of rain and sun but sadly it seems to be one or the other in extremes. Try burying the pumpkin stem as they sometime send out more roots. But all in all the allotment isn’t doing bad sherry so keep at it, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦

    Usually, but not always brown leaves mean lack of water,yellow means over watered. Probably does need feeding too though. Trays for plants pots with water in them will really help in the poly tunnel, so great thinking. Water is a tricky thing especially in warm climates or weather. Its a learning curve, and I am struggling to get it right too her in Southern California. Hang in there!!! Could the rash be an allergy of some kind? Maybe try Benadry or Claritin or something similar before you go to the plot?

    • @SherrysAllotment
      @SherrysAllotment 26 днів тому

      I’ve used some small containers that mushrooms come in, they’re definitely helping with the watering 👍🏼 I’m not sure the rash/blisters are allergy related, I take 2 allergy tablets everyday for hay fever, though it begs the question, if they are allergy related how bad they’d be if I didn’t take antihistamines 😅.

      Omg! That fits with what I’m experiencing. I wonder if it’s just certain things on the plot that triggers it for me, I’ll have to try and keep an eye on when it happens and what I was doing at the time. I’ve always suffered with severe hay fever but never experienced the blistering until having the plot.
