Parkinsons Walks

Home to the adventurous subscriber. My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these video’s will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery.
I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort.
I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

Hello Ron! Brrr! I have just turned the heating up after watching this! I loved the work you did on the soundtrack on this one, and the music was just sublime. Hope you had a great Christmas Day, and are enjoying Christmastime. Take care, Paul
I just remembered....this was when my car got stuck in snow at work when I was working in Brixham in Devon - I couldn't get back to Dartmouth for two nights and had to book into a B&B. Fun times (!)
Christmas would not be Christmas without your Snow Video, it is a firm favourite at the Parkinson's Walks Retirement Home for past contributors. Like a bottle of Brandy it matures over the year. Thank you for bringing it to us for our enjoyment, I am sure Sumac (OVM) would be somewhere amongst all that snow perhaps when I watch it again I will spot her! All that is left for me to do now is to wish you and your good lady a very Happy and healthy New Year. Best Wishes, Andrew.
Merry Christmas Andrew, always great to see you post a message here. I'm thinking James must have got some super glue for those illuminated antlers ..... no sign of Sumac in the snow!!
@davidberlanny3308 Hi David, Many thanks for your good wishes, I hope you had a good Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you. I rarely go on UA-cam now and the only channel I subscribe to is Sumac's. Parkinson's Walks Snow Video was always my favourite video of the year even in times past when I commented nearly every week. The very best of luck on the 7th and that you will be back to full good health as soon as possible
Good Morning Ron, that made me feel pretty cold. The family has gone done with a nasty bug, we are coughing and splutting all over the place. Hope you have avoided any sniffles so far. See you in the new Year. Simon
Hi Ron just made the morning parade. This reminds me of the winter of 1963 which went on until march 1964. I had been selected to sing gold I bring in the school nativity play. My voice was a choirboy in the soprano range and I oft was selected by the Sunday school teacher to sing solos. Alas it was never to be and I was dropped from the play my voice breaking at 10 years old. My consolation was to play Joseph next to a girl who I secretly adored. I never recovered my voice despite my efforts to sing in church. Peace and goodwill to you and the Parkinson’s family.
An old favourite which enchants the imagination and warms the heart. Thank you.
Lovely video Ron. Beautiful when the sun came out. I love those conditions. Mary kept telling me what you were looking at. Cleeve hill she recognised. And she thought she spotted Ashchurch. Good choice of music and sound effects.
I remember that! The beast from the East! Before Putin acquired that epithet! Great Video, Ron!
Thanks Michael, all the best. Ron
Mornin' Ron, It's such a lovely sight to see the snow transforms the landscape, both city and countryside alike. A great video, one of your best. Loved seeing the robin looking for shelter, the clips through the church and graveyard were very atmospheric, the music just perfect. It's a real memory trigger. Takes me right back to building igloos with my Dad in the late 60s, we've even got some cine film of them!! We even built some in Portsmouth in the 70s. I would never have imagined seeing snow on the Mediterranean beaches but we did get some in 2017. In general though these events are few and far between the daily winter grind of deicing the windscreen stopped several years ago where we are. It's always unpredictable too, I've seen it snow on the mountains near Madrid in August, although only a flurry, the next day we went to Oslo and baked in the sun at 30°!! Down here it can start in September and stop April. Longer term the last glacier disappeared start of the 20th century although there is still evidence in the subsoil, not in our garden, high up in the mountains!! I'm off out to see a man about a KS now, op confirmed for the 7th, snow permitting!! All the best!!
I Guess snow so changes the look of everything it gets our attention. Fingers crossed the KS will soon be gone. Take care. Ron
My first English Conversation lesson after the Christmas break starts at 09.30 this morning. I'm ready to go so let's watch Ron's video first. Now I'm feeling so cold and don't feel like venturing outside! I remember seeing this beautiful film before. Superb, no, one of the best Christmas times video ever! Gorgeous scenery, fantastic music to go with the film too Decision made. Lessons today will be online via Skype. I'm staying in doors
I don't blame you Michael, it's not very nice out there, much safer indoors. Look after yourself. Ron
The absolutely BEST Christmas video ever produced...of course, being OVM I have a vested interest in the matter, but be that as it may I stand by my statement. That's the kind of snow I love playing in..."Where's my ball?!" Thanks Ron, you're a fine fellow. Sumac, OVM
Unfortunately Sumac your biggest problem is winkling that James out from his warm lair. Try taking a snowball in to him, that should work. Happy barking. Ron
That really was a snowstorm, Ron. We've only had one like that in the 52 years that I've lived in New Zealand, with a metre of snow falling in just a few hours. That was back in 1992, if my memory's correct. And because the temperature wasn't too cold, it all disappeared in about 24 hours, causing some flooding as it melted. Everything had stopped in the meantime, as we are not prepared for such events. Most winters we get no snow, although there's plenty in the mountains.
Sounds like when it snows there Jim it really snows. Past the shortest day now, on our way to summer. leave us a little sunshine. Keep flying. Ron
Beautiful filming, Ron. I just wished I was drinking a hot cup of coffee before i clicked on your channel instead of my cold drink. You had me feeling shivers with that wind blowing in the background. Of course the sunny day rising the next morn helped alleviate most of my chill.
Sorry Charles, I hope you have warmed up now. Look after yourself. Ron
Merry Christmas to you and your family ❤❤❤
Thank You Christina, thanks for your support this year. Ron
Ron, thanks for all your efforts in 24 and a very happy (and healt hy) Christmas to you.
Thanks Peter, have a good time. Ron
That was my school late 50's .... I lived at Guiting Grange . Which was later tragically demolished .
Happy days
Thanks Ron, no fuel allowance and your film left me feeling cold.
Sorry to hear that Barry, wait until you see next week. Ron
Good morning Ron. You'll be pleased to know that Mary doesn't know where that place is and has never been there! Beautiful scenery, especially with the snow. That's something we very rarely get here, in spite of my wishing for some every winter. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Hi both. It has taken me all year to catch up with Mary! Have a great time, Ron
At Christmas you always deliver a really good video and this one was no exception, a video with snow in it is bound to get my attention and with it a comment. Thoroughly enjoyed it, the music fitted the pictures so well and was a big hit here at the Parkinson's Walks retirement home for past contributors. I was expecting OVM to make an appearance as she likes snow I believe. Looking forward to the snow video next week in the meantime I wish you and your good lady wife a very Happy Christmas.
Hi Andrew, what a lovely post, thank you. I hope you will keep in touch next year, you still have a following on the channel. Until then look after yourself, and enjoy the festive season. Pauline & Ron
Thank you Ron.
My pleasure John, look after yourself. Ron
Lovely to see you looking so festive Ron. Thank you for yet another year of wonderful videos reminding us of the marvelous countryside we enjoyed over 37 years ago. Wishing you and your wife a very happy Christmas. May your New Year be filled with joy and new adventures and health and strength to do so. Blessings and Aroha in large measure from Paul & Gill in NZ.
Hi both, thank you for a lovely post. I wish you all that you wished me. Here's to happiness and good health. Pauline & Ron
Hello. Ron. Wishing your family and good yourself a very Merry Christmas. Pete Tanya and Syd.
Thanks Pete, you too. Thanks for your support this year. Ron
Have a good Christmas 🎄 Ron. Lovely choice of music for the wintry scenes.❄️
Thanks Jonathan, You too. Ron
Hi Ron, Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2025 Jamie, Sunderland
Thanks Jamie best wishes to you too. Ron
happy christmas Ron and all the best for the new year
Thank you Shaun, you are very kind, have a good one yourself. Ron
Good morning. I love the Christmas theme today (especially the hat). It’s very Christmassy indeed. Hope everyone is well. Merry Christmas Ron to you and your family and your utube family too.
Hi Marilyn, if you look at Ron's comment Deb's is now cancer free, what a lovely Christmas present for her. Lots like her are not so lucky and it certainly puts into perspective what we would like for Christmas and how fortunate we are to be (relatively) well. I hope you and Maisie have a wonderful peaceful Christmas time. Don't spoil her too much. Pauline and Ron
Seasons Greeting and Best WIshes for the New Year!
Thanks Malcolm you have a good one as well. Ron
Happy Christmas and a Healthy Happy New Year Ron
Thank you very much Dawn, I wish the same for you. Ron
Mornin' Ron, A lovely catch up vlog and film!! Celine Dione's voice is unmistakeable. As a young boy I would read Hergé's TinTin books, often with my Mum and get transported into the stories he created. Many, many years later, in 2002 to be precise, Nuria bought me a book called "TinTin, the complete companion" by Michael Farr. This describes how Hergé created and developed each book and called upon his archive of newspaper cuttings and photos which he used to draw each cartoon frame. The drawings were obviously simplified but the likeness to reality is amazing which is what I could see in Mike's layout. This makes the books work for child and adult alike. Herge was short for his name Gerges Remi, his initials reversed and pronounced as in French. The winter scenes were wonderful, sadly only occasional these days. Whilst its been very cold down here its been relatively dry. The sky resort is open with 12Km of piste, If it really snows I think that grows to over 100Kms. Its not my sport, I've tried it once or twice but never manage to stay on my feet, something I've got in common with James then!! I do like to see the mountains with snow and we do depend on its arrival for next years water. I always enjoy its arrival down at our level, driving through it is another matter all together. In theory we are due to fly back to the UK this Sunday for Christmas however its looking complicated with multiple sickness in the family, we'll see. Anyway, I hope you have a great time and are able to recreate another family photo like the one in today's video. Wishing you and Pauline and family a great christmas PS: Fingers crossed that Santa brings you some cotton wool for a beard for next year!!
Ahh Tin Tin, now I know! Pauline's son has everything Tin Tin and he is now 58. Like you I don't think Skiing is my thing, I have a hard enough time staying upright walking these days. I hope your Christmas plans work out, there are lots of warnings here about traffic congestion on the great Christmas getaway this year. Take care and have a fabulous time. Ron & Pauline
Hello Ron and greetings from Poland You know how to tug at the old heart strings don't you? Having wiped the tears from my eyes and cleared my throat, my memories of Christmas in the UK have come flooding back. Average different experience here in Poland - different food, presents on Christmas Eve and not so commercialised. Your wonderful channel keeps my links to UK alive and with the help and kindness from so many PWs friends from around the world, make my life much happier. 2024 has been very difficult for many of us in different ways, especially you my dear friend. Let's hope 2025 is much better and long live Parkinsons Walks and a Merry Christmas and Happy and Peaceful New Year to you Ron and all the PWs Family
Hi Michael, I hope it tugged at the heart strings in a nice way. You are right a lot of the 'family' have been through the mill this year, including you. I'll join you in hoping 2025 is better. Merry Christmas Pauline & Ron
Good Morning, Ron. Hope all is well with you. Just going through matters arising, very enjoyable, and I can now pass on some very good news. Following her course of chemotherapy and recent surgery Deb’s cancer has been eradicated! She will still have some radiotherapy in the New Year, and continued immunotherapy, then monitoring for the next five years, however, she is now cancer free. Some lovely winter photos to end the vlog. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2025.
Hi Ron, what wonderful news, you couldn't have hoped for a better Christmas present. I like how the 'family' have rallied round with messages of support for Debs, not forgetting the stress you must have been under. I needn't wish you a happy Christmas, I think that is taken care of. Love to Deb. Ron
@ thank you, Ron. Abandoned Railways will be posting between now and Christmas.👍
Fantastic news for you both.
@ cheers, Michael🙂
Good morning Ron! A very Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for the mention. Another lovely catch up. May I wish all your viewers a wonderful Yuletide. Lovely music and stunning photos to close this weeks vlog Ron. I haven't seen an extensive snowy covering like that for a while in the shire. Have a brilliant Christmas! Paul
Hi Paul, Christmas can be hard for folks like you and me, all these people around, but we will do our best. Thanks for all your support this year. Take care. Ron
Hello Santa, what have I got for Christmas? Don't believe the wife when she says I've been a naughty boy!
Brilliant as usual Simon... still laughing Ron
Hi Ron. Okay, I admit to a bit of a lump in my throat after that...what beautiful photography. Any one of those photos would make a perfect Christmas card, which of course they did for us, thank you. Thanks Ron for all the work you put in on our behalf and thanks Pauline for keeping Ron on track. Happy Christmas to you both from your friends James and Sumac.
Hi James, of course my thanks go out to you for all your support this year. Hope you and the hound have a terrific one. Pauline & Ron
I am definitely not a Celine Dione fan, but the photos were terrific, and reminded me of what the Christmas season should look like, a sight I haven't seen for many, many years. Thank you for all your great videos, Ron, and I hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas!
Hi Jim, I don't know that I am a fan, but that woman has a powerful voice. Thanks for watching Jim, have a good one. Pauline & Ron
Beautiful. Merry Christmas from our family to yours.
Thanks Charles, I hope you and yours have a good one too. Ron
Hi Ron, what a detailed layout! Buildings, people, horses, sheep...the only thing I didn't see was a dog. Do Swiss people not like dogs...or is it brother-in-law Mike? Hmmm...Grrrr! Well, at least I know you like me Ron! Your friend Sumac.
Hi Sumac, you have finally wrestled the laptop off James, nice to hear from you. Woof Woof. Ron
Glad everyone seems to have enjoyed my video, the first time I have seen it for some years. It brings back so many memories for me, not only in the construction of the layout but also as a reminder of the many holidays we spent in the area of this railway in the Graubunden area of south-east Switzerland. Needles to say we have travelled all over the whole extensive system and I spent many happy hours studying and filming to help with the layout and to make it as realistic as possible. I started building it shortly after `i retired in 1999 but had been collecting rolling stock and other items for some time before this in readiness for the start! It took me about 10 years to get it to the virtually finished state you saw in the video but sadly I had to dismantle it and dispose of the removable items when we downsized our housing arrangements prior to moving to a retirement village where there is no room for such a large or any other layout! The rolling stock is mainly by Bemo in ready to run form although one has to add many small items by hand. Buildings are a mixture of Faller & Kibri with many other entities selling other items, catenary, scenery, signals, lighting, etc., Track is a mixture of Bemo & Peco. The original line is all metre gauge, because of the tight curves on the line, so the track gauge is known as HOm to the scale of 1:87 which is the main scale for Continental models. Our own Dublo, as in Hornby (i.e OO) is not strictly to scale like the Continental HO gauge! Trust this satisfies the curiosity of some viewers but, if not, please let me know. A Happy Christmas to one and all. Mike
Hi Mike, Thanks very much for sharing the video, it's a wonderful to have been able to record it in such detail. So H0 gauge then, some very tight curves. We visited Switzerland for the first time this summer and looks forward to going back soon. All the best!!
Well said Mike. Ron
Hello Mike, if you are still itching to make something you can always make an end to end shelf layout in N gauge. You only need a 6 inch wide shelf to do something and can go round a corner quite easily to go down a second wall. Widen it to 9 inches for a station and you are good to go.
Thanks Ron, what a great layout and now I have a strange craving for a cup of hot chocolate. A few more days before my break begins and it's time to watch your traditional Walk Around Tirley video which never fails to get me in the Christmas spirit. I'll have to get the mutt to do her video offering this week. Have a great week Ron. James and Sumac.
Hi James, hope you and the bike are in working order. You feature in this weeks vlog of course, I couldn't let it slip. BE SAFE. Ron
A little bit different and giving you a rest this week Ron. We went to Switzerland a few times just to travel on the railways. Everything so clean, neat and running like clockwork just like the models. But I do secretly really prefer the full size version. Hoping you and the family are well. Thank you to Mike for the filming. 🎄
Hi Marilyn, I hope we find you and Maisie well. Mike has filmed the full size Swiss railways, I'm sure we will feature them on here sooner or later. More happy memories for you I hope. I have more railway films lined up for the new year, but we are slipping into Christmas mode at the moment. Take care of yourself. Ron
Funny that theres 2 Cheltenham spas and one is in Swindon haha
Hello Ron. An interesting and elaborate layout. I just wish it had been based on BR. It must have taken an absolute age to construct. I still haven't done anything for Christmas and time is running out now, so I'll wish you and Pauline a very happy, peaceful time over the coming weeks.
Hi Lionel, I think it was a multi year project I think. Like you I find Christmas creeping up on us, will have to get a move on. Seasons greetings to you and Mary as well, have a good one. Ron & family.
Good morning Ron et al. A big thanks to Mike for sharing the video of his Swiss railway. The attention to detail is incredible and I'm sure that it showcases the tremendous amount of work and time that must have gone into it. Just recovering from a nasty head cold I picked up this week and looking forward to going off to the railway and playing trains on Sunday. Following the storm last weekend when we were on red alert and were without power and water for around 36 hours, all is much calmer up here in my lofty perch in the Welsh hills, in fact, it is actually quite mild here to day! So, best wishes to you and all the PW family - have a great week. Regards Trev
Hi Trev, there seems to be a lot of colds around at the moment and it seems to linger. In fact Mike has been laid low by one. You certainly 'enjoy' the weather where you are Trev. Isn't it strange how we take electricity for granted until we haven't got any. Get well soon. Ron
A superbly engineered re-creation, which must have consumed many hours and given many hours of enjoyment! I have dim memories of Swiss railways as they were in 1960 - on a school trip to the Bernese Oberland region, including a ride up the Jungfrau mountain railway from Interlaken. Great stuff. Thank you.
Hi Malcolm, Mike first visited Switzerland with the scouts many years ago and has been going back ever since. Take care of yourself. Ron
Morning Ron. Hope all is well. Wow what a great layout Mike has made . So much work and detail has gone into it and its nice to see something different . Stay safe Pete Tany aand Syd
Hi Pete, getting a bit chilly when Syd drags you out for a walk these days. Stay Warm. Ron
Magnificent skilled attention to detail, amazing achievement. I caught a glimpse of you on more than one occasion presumably you only accept small acting roles? Your family is skilled all round.
Thanks Barry, Mike spent many hours on that. Ron
What a wonderful layout. I spotted a few items I have seen in my travels. Some models from Faller and of course the Swiss locomotives. Lovely.
What country are you in at the moment Simon? Ron
@@ParkinsonsWalks I was back on saturday night and back at work on monday. It's cold!
Good Morning Ron and greetings from a very cold Poland. No snow - yet! A fabulous film from Mike. Brought a representation of Swiss Railways back to life. What fascinated me was the incredible work Mike must have done to build this layout. Please can you find out if the locos and rolling stock were bought or modelled by Mike? I hope you enjoyed your day off and expext you back next Friday for our biweekly Family Vlog/Matters Arising
Hi Michael I think Mike plans to answer these queries himself, so I leave it to him. Hope you are well and warm. Be good. Ron
Mornin' Ron, This was absolutely captivating from start to finish. It just looks so authentic, I still have Switzerland fresh in my mind from last summer. When I watch these videos I sometimes loose my frame of reference, Simon's layout looks enormous, until the hand of god appears, its still very big for n gauge I think. Mike's looks like 00 gauge but some of those loops look too tight so maybe its n gauge, not that It matters, its just my curiosity!! Some lovely stock, those older engines look wonderful. What a labour of love this must have been, the film is dated 2012 I wonder how long it took to build? I liked the little details like the zig zagging paths up the hills and the culvert outlets, pride of place for me is the large electricity gantry, its the kind of thing that Herge would have drawn in his books to transport you into his reality!! Excellent piece of narration too, well done Mike!! I'm guessing this northerly wind that has frozen most of Spain this week passed over yourselves too, perfect moment for the boiler to pack up on us, all fixed now!! Hope your keeping well. Have a great weekend!!
Hi David, you can imagine Mike's feelings when they moved house and he had to dismantle and sell the layout. He says he still misses it. Not too cold here at the moment, fingers crossed. Keep warm. Ron
Swiss railways are a marvel, and this layout is terrific, too. The commentary was helpful. And we were entertained while Ron got a break, so winners all round! Well done, Mike.
Hi Jim, well deserved praise there. I guess you are enjoying nice balmy weather at the moment. Horrible here. Take care. Ron
@@ParkinsonsWalks Mostly warm (sometimes too warm) and sunny these days, Ron, but the wind has been very strong and gusty - no good for kite-flying! We need some rain as everything is dry and we've had big scrub and forest fires breaking out, which the winds make worse, of course.
Hello Ron. Before you ask. Mary has been to Lechlade on many occasions! Haha. That was filmed in warmer times, by the looks of things. Very pretty river and bridges, apart from the small bridge with no hand rail. We haven't done any videos for a while, but must try and get one out before Christmas. Take care of yourselves.
So Mary has been there Lionel, who would have thought!! Hard to get enough enthusiasm to get out at this time of year, that's even if the weather would let you. I agree. Look after that Mary. Ron
