Severn Valley Railway Bridgnorth
Severn Valley Railway, a series of films covering the railway from top to bottom and everything in between. This film, the magnificent Bridgenorth Station in all its glory.
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

Some of my earliest childhood memories were of steam trains at Malvern Link, in the days before the original canopies and some of the buildings were removed. A lovely station back then - complete with slot vending machines. I can't recall the bay platform being in use, nor the sidings where the fire station is today, though I vividly recall the car park being used as the terminus of the Gloucester to Malvern bus service (long discontinued). I used the station daily for most of the 70s. By then it looked like a shadow of its former self with the new ticket office being a low cost prefab style building. In around 1973 or 74 two-way working was introduced at Worcester Foregate Street which necessitated the introduction of points before the Worcester viaduct. On an occasion soon after this one driver forgot the new speed restriction for the points and very nearly derailed the train we were travelling on. Except for three loco-hauled through trains to/from London each day, all services were rather shabby DMUs either to Birmingham or Oxford. The Cotswold Line between Norton Jn and Oxford was in a state of disrepair and thus as few loco services as possible were allowed along the line - one of the London services was routed via Cheltenham. At the lowest point, only two direct London services were provided. On summer Saturdays in the 70s one of the loco services went to Paignton instead of London. BR also occasionally ran mystery tour services that were advertised in the local paper. High excitement arrived in the 70s when a new London service was introduced - comprising an HST which achieved a journey time from PAD to MVL of 2hrs 10mins at one point, a time that has never since been beaten. For many years the London-bound services travelled with three coaches from Hereford to Worcester Shrub Hill where more coaches were added but this practice stopped during the 70s and the full rake travelled from Hereford. That gave us schoolboys the delight of occasionally travelling in a train which had the smell of bacon being cooked. In the 1960s at least some of the Cardiff to Birmingham trains travelled via Malvern. For a few years (in the 80s?) one of the London-bound services began at Abergavenny, recreating part of that route. With the advent of privatised train companies many new destinations appeared, including services to Weymouth, Brighton and even Stansted airport. Wish I'd travelled on these before they were recently dropped. In all the years I've been using Malvern Link station all of the trains have stopped at both Great Malvern and Malvern Link.

Hi Ron, Sorry I couldn't make it yesterday for your publication day. Thank you for showing us around Bridgnorth - probably the station on the SVR that I am least familiar with. Bridgnorth though is a wonderful town in its own right. Another Severnside wonder. There were lots of detail in this that you picked out which I missed. Splendid video - you covered the station very well. It is steeped in atmosphere, and it is yet so different to other stations on this wonderful heritage railway. Great work - and thank you! Hope you have a good weekend and week. Take care, Paul

12:45 when you said you'd call ir a day there - if you'd carried on walking on that track, then crossed the main road, then the golf course, you end up on the railway line that goes into withington. Most of it is private but you can sneakily walk along it, mostly overgrown though.

Great observation on the water tower, I suppose mains water would slowly fill it. 7714 looked very shiny!! Kidderminster next? It's boiling down here. No adventures this week but last weekend we did venture out to see some of the annual festival of swing, a Welsh band and a German band, great atmosphere and being based right by the river a lovely cooling breeze, it was free entry too ..... don't tell James! Good afternoon Ron, you are unintentionally making me feel old, cruelly and deliberately showing me all the relics I bought new in my youth. The showing and calculated filming of dripping water doesn’t help either when one has a weak bladder, I was up and down the stairs like a yoyo. Even the wheel tappers and shunters club refused my application stating I was too old and would get too excited if they made me a member. Apart from that it was an excellent piece of filming although it only just passed the censorship board for anybody over 70.

Good morning Ron. Another great video in your SVR series. You are like me, in as much that we prefer to be watching from the track side or platforms. It's all very well travelling on the railway, but I prefer to see the trains themselves and generally give a donation or buy my lunch when I go visiting a heritage line.. The station was beautifully built, with the crafted stone. Very attractive indeed. I think we all like to watch the loco running around It's train. That was all part of a branch line terminus. You are very lucky living where you do. Can't be too far from the SVR, so never too far away from the good things in life.

Marvellous atmosphere of a busy station - though looking over the green fields at the rear, you would not think you were a short distance from the centre of the wonderful old town of Bridgnorth. The station buildings are in keeping with their surroundings, and like the rolling stock, beautifully preserved without being over-manicured. I always think it was a tragedy that the restoration northwards towards Shrewsbury was not pursued at a time when it still seemed possible. Today, that seems very remote - although I understand, there are plans to reopen a section of line in the Ironbridge Gorge area. Great video. Thank you.

Good morning Ron and, as ever, than you for today's video. Yet again a lovely country station which recalls the past so splendidly. The thing that stood out for me though was the couple of very brief glimpses we had looking through the entrance to the station where you could see the train in the platform beyond. As a kid our local station had this feature which looked onto the bay platform. So, when my parents took me out for a trip on the railway, usually Sunday afternoons, I remember always hoping that the train would be there at the platform in the bay on the other side of this magical tunnel past the booking office leading to another world and feeling it was waiting just for me. It was quite a disappointment if the train hadn't arrived at the time to start our journey, but the disappointment soon waned once the train arrived and we hopped on to start our leisurely trip through the beautiful countryside. It's amazing how tiny details like this bring back so many memories and I wouldn't have given a thought these days but for seeing that wonderful glimpse into the past in today's video. Many thanks Ron, have a great week and best wishes to you, Pauline and all the PW family. Trev.

Good morning Ron. Just had my Friday morning treat and I loved the trip around the beautifully kept BRIDGENORTH station. How do they do it? Who wouldn’t want to live in that house overlooking the engine shed? Really nice to see it from someone else’s perspective. I never managed to get in the signal box there for a look unfortunately but it still must be pretty complicated with 4/5 lines to deal with. All the manoeuvring to get the engines from the front to return to Kidderminster! It makes my mind boggle. I don’t think there is room anywhere for a turntable like Minehead’s but someone tell me I’m wrong. See you next time!

Quite a few years ago, on one of my last visits "home" to the UK, I visited Bridgnorth with my son. It's a very interesting place, split as it is into High Town and Low Town, with the two connected by many, many steps or for the lazy (me included) the Cliff Railway. Certainly a place worth visiting, and the Severn Valley Railway would be a great way to get there.

I am curious about that suspension bridge and the general placement of the railroad up on a "ledge" overlooking the town area below. Hard to draw a customer base all the way up there during normal use by the GWR years ago, but it appears to have been a fairly substantial station and I am guessing, it always had workshops up there? Overall, just an odd placement of the entire facility.

Hi Ron, that's your best shirt yet, well done. I'm sorry about the delay this week, my sister was in hospital for five days with a leaky appendix...too hot to operate on yet but I've been biking to visit her each day while she gets antibiotic-ed, and that, combined with you-know-who is keeping me a bit busy...yes, I know it's not all about me...still, it would be nice to sleep in. I found time to haul home several pieces of a railway signal tower that had been cut up and disposed of near here. The pieces are all about 4 feet long and are much heavier than they look, being mostly 5 inch iron pipe and iron ladder. I could have hired a truck but, well, you know. Five trips and as many heart palpitations and it's almost all here. Now I just need to learn how to weld so I can piece it back together to support my semaphore signal as a garden feature...anything to annoy the neighbours. OVM is excited about Bridgenorth, we have one of those here and I think she's confused. Right, bed, have a good week Ron and good to see the woman behind the man, hi Pauline.

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks 6 днів тому

Hi James, Pauline says hello. How on earth are you going to assemble the signal tower if it needs welding, unless you can get and drill metal straps to bridge between sections. Do you need the additional work? I can just imagine you wobbling with a section on your bike. 'Hire a truck!' that costs money, hernias are cheap. Please pass on our good wishes to your sister, ask her if she can retain a hospital bed for you whilst she is there, sounds like you might need one soon. Have fun. Ron

Hello Ron. I am well behind with everything as usual - sorry! Been an extremely busy few days - I am currently watching this on a train to Cornwall to catch up with my daughter. I was so sorry to hear about Ron's wife and recent diagnosis. I do wish her well. Another great vlog round up there Ron - always great to hear everyone's comments. Thank you for the mention too. I had a good time yesterday at the Bristol Harbour Festival - I hadn't intentionally gone to see it - I wanted to film the Bristol Harbour Steam Railway in action for an explore of that line, and, coincidentally, it was on at the same time. Fabulous seeing the steam powered boats and the replica of The Mathew in action. Loved your film club. I uses buses a fair bit - I hate car travel - an evil necessity occasionally and unfortunately. Busses around urban areas like Bristol tend to be good and the flat fare at £2 is excellent - cheaper than parking alone. However rural bus provision is poor - it is a bit chicken and egg - because the services are poor, few people use them,so the services remain poor....how to break that cycle? I remember doing The Severn Way to Upton on Severn in Worcestershire - the last bus to Worcester was at 2.30pm in the afternoon - dreadful! Upton is a tourist town and deserves a much better service than that. Hope you and all the Parkinsons Walks family have a great week. Take care, Paul..

We are in the bus conundrum. Five a day, one very early, one very late and three that don't integrate with any other service. Take care, keep smiling. Ron

Hi Ron, I wondered if you used your bus pass? We never use them because our busses are few and far between. Although we have had many a good experience of park and ride it is one of the few regular bus services that survives today. Bodmin looks definitely worth a visit but was the crime and punishment compulsory, Bodmin Goal was foreboding I hear.

Hi Ron. What a beautiful background you had for today’s chat. I do agree about the lovely signs around the station. They are big enough to read unlike the signs with station names on nowadays. Even when it’s a long sign the print is really small and does not fill the sign. Who designed those do you think? Certainly not someone my age. It’s very difficult to work out where you are on unfamiliar territory. Second thing why were there no signs for MARMITE? So many for Bovril and I think they have both been going a long time. It was very interesting to see today’s trip by bus to Bodmin. We went there a couple of times and there was always something to watch on the station, shunting, rolling stock etc so I am a bit ashamed to say we never left the station. I hope the lady with early diagnosis of cancer gets excellent treatment. We never know what’s round the corner. Probably just as well. Thank you. Bye from the elder sister and hope you both have a good week.

Hi Marilyn, hope you are well, the head gardener liked your garden comment, she will be strutting about all day now. Interesting observation on Marmite, short answer, I don’t know! We have travelled on the steam train from Bodmin on a memorable day out which involved us falling on to the train not off it. My fault of course. Lovely to hear from our elder sister, take care of yourself. Pauline & Ron

Hi Ron - Bodmin has Some Very Serious Architecture and Imposing Buildings - when I look at the Materials and See how they’ve been Utilised it leaves me in Awe wondering how it Could have been Achieved. A New Gateway was Cut into the Wall of the Prison when it was transformed to an Upmarket Hotel recently, which Revealed the Thickness and Density of the Structure. I have to Say You Missed an Absolute Treat by Not Visiting the Station, the Station Staff Are so Chatty and Friendly, and the Cuppa Tea and Cake in the Buffet Was Heavenly, which set me up for the Bike Ride back to Wadebridge. Great Film Many thanks 🙏🏻

Mornin’ Ron, First of best wishes for Ron’s wife I sincerely hope she has a swift recovery. We know Trev flies and that he’s got a drone, has he moved on to a circular saw too? If he’s on the ground I think I might get him with one of my torpedos …….. I’m sure there must have been Bovril ads at the football grounds but I just remember drinking it. I will have a look at my collection of Football League Review Magazines from the 60s and 70s. In one of them it relates a story sent in by my Dad who wrote in to tell them how he had managed to avoid selling a spare cup final ticket to the touts, a prized magazine in my collection. You were lucky to get Imagine past the UA-cam gods mind you I’m sure John wouldn’t have minded. We are in the middle of a heatwave with temperatures into the 40’s and down to about 30° in the night. Last night we went to see a film projected in the outdoors in the Alhambra Palace gardens. To get there you have to walk through the adjacent woods which was such a relief. We live boxed up in in ovens so no wonder its hot. Have a great weekend!!

Hello again Ron - greetings from Poland I must admit, I paniced earlier this morning. Turned on my laptop, ready to eat my porridge whilst watching your Friday Vlog - nothing! Thanks for the message putting my mind at rest. Please thank Pauline for the wonderful floral display in your garden. Mags saw it too and promptly exclaimed that we needed more colour in ours - night scented stocks said I. No chance said Mags - can't get them in Poland. As we all are getting older, news seems to be a bit sad. Lets all try and be positive - our glasses should be half full and not half empty At about eight and a quarter minutes into todays vlog, I heard what sounded like like a giant mosquito flying around. On second thoughts, it might have been one of yoyr neighbours using a strimmer - how rood during filming!

It is steeped in character, and the people are friendly. Although inland, thanks to Sabrina, it has somewhat of a resort feel to it. If you have never been to the museum there, please do visit it next time you are in the area - it is one of the very best around! Professor Ron, The signs say a lot about that generation, grandiosity such as Station Master, Booking Hall, and Great Western Railways. Politeness, in that passengers are requested to conform. Health and safety, only cross the line using the bridge and fire buckets to be kept full of water. Of that time, such as passengers should not alight here, walk forward, I wonder whether the young generation today would truly understand and the no trespassing notice is far too long for the tick tockers of today to read all the way through.

Afternoon Ron, This one just got better as you went on and that from a great start too. That tree on the left of the gate was enormous. I enjoyed seeing all the rolling stock there but, like Jim, you have to wonder if it will ever get used. I enjoyed seeing the class 20 pulling the first train, I have one of those ....... mine is slightly smaller!! The railcar in the station was a great sight too. You found a great vantage point for the gran finale and were rewarded by the arrival and departure of two steam trains👌👌 I didn't know Bovril was spread I think I only remember it from football grounds. Talking of which we have an interesting evening to look forward to down here Sunday night. I'm trying to convince everyone that the youngster Yamal won't be allowed out so late as Monday is a school day, problem is school finished here about three weeks ago!! Have a great weekend!!
