Acoustic baritone guitar build with Half Nashville tuning

How to make a guitar and my approach to build from scratch with no building plans. This is an acoustic baritone guitar with "Half Nashville" tuning. I´m a huge fan of Pat Metheny and his albums "What´s It All About" and "One Quiet Night" where he uses a special acoustic baritone guitar build by Linda Manzer. It is low tuned from A to A (sometimes Ab to Ab) but the two middle strings is one octa...

The materials is 2 oak floorboards (sides, back, neck and fingerboard) and a natural larch board for the top, bracing and kerfed linings. • @AndersWestfall
      @AndersWestfall 22 дні тому

      If the tone in the 12th fret is too high you need to move the contact point between the string and the saddle back by filing material off on the opposite side.

    hello Anders je viens de regarder et d'écouter entièrement ta vidéo !!!! j'avais l'impression d'écouter Metheny - tu as vraiment compris son univers mais en plus il y a ta personne - je voulais juste te demander un conseil - J'ai acheté une baritone de marque Walden - pas mal mais peut faire mieux - ce que je n'aime pas ce sont les basses filetées - et la question les deux cordes à l'octave ? ce sont des cordes normales ou des cordes de 12 cordes comme je l'avais lu dans un article sur Pat Metheny !! Il y a plusieurs morceaux qui me tiennent à coeur " Alfie " " Round Midnight " "Don't know why" et bien sûr beaucoup d'autres - j'aimerais juste que tu puisses m'expliquer le choix exact du jeu de cordes - est ce que des cordes montées déjà sur cette guitare peuvent aller à l'octave ? et bien sur une guitare à 1200 € ne peut pas avoir le son d'une Linda Manzer - mais faut rêver - ta guitare est magnifique - sobre et un esuperbe son - mais es tu luthier ? bonne vie avec ta musique - Patrice je suis français 74 ans cette année et un grand admirateur de Pat Metheny depuis 40 ans au moins - je joue aussi de la guitare nylon ( Yamaha sg 200 N ) car je suis aussi fan d'a peu près le même temps que Metheny d'un autre guitariste merveilleux Ralph Towner bye Anders

    Hello Andreas, thank you for your videos that accompanied me in the realization of a Gibson L00, made with scrapwood. I write to you because I have trouble finding the information on the net about the tuning fork. As the plane is unreliable because of the random dimensions, I do not know exactly where to take the 630 mm measurement in order to properly place the bridge with its bone saddle as it has at an angle. (hope you anderstand my question). Can you help me to be sure where to take the dimensions of the tuning fork, is it on the E4, the E2, or in between these notes. Thank you for the response...if you can.

    • @AndersWestfall
      @AndersWestfall 6 місяців тому

      Hi there. if i understand your question correctly you are not placing the bridge at an angle, only the saddle. The bridge is placed perpendicular to the neck. Measure 630mm from the nut on the base and treble side. Place the bridge so the 630mm mark is on top of the bridge between the peg holes and the front side edge and there is room for the angle. Be sure there is a least 3mm from the saddle slot to the front edge of the bridge. Then you can use something thin and straight as a temporally saddle and use the treble E and the base E string to find the perfect placement of the saddle slot. See the video here ua-cam.com/video/Nc2leZhouD0/v-deo.htmlsi=Ir49_t697UpNKP46&t=4371 I hope it helps :)

      Merci Mille fois Andreas for your response...it’s very precise, I should have watched your video again and again, especially in the end where the whole process is described...I don't know why, but I've underated this part and made mistakes. I'll see later on what'll be done. The bridge with the hole for the saddle is glued and it's missing 3 mm! Thank you again for your time!

    • @AndersWestfall
      @AndersWestfall 7 місяців тому

      Hi Glen. The angle can vary from guitar to guitar and I find it difficult (and not precise enough) to calculate it. So I find the perfect intonation point for the two outer strings and draw a line. When the saddle is in place I fine tune the intonation for every string.

      If you make a crosscut sled for table saw mark a like 3/16 or 1/4" from the blade on one side, and make a piece out of good timber for kerfing 30" x 4" × 5/16" piece, start a cut at the end and line up every cut after with the mark on the sled then you can rip cut 5/8 strips of kerfing off that, makes it super fast and fun

I have literally just finished filling out the paperwork for my dream home out in the country here in Ontario. In a few short months I'll be completely mortgage free. I intend to build every stick of it myself, never done it before but I'm full of fools confidence lol! Great job, man! I also used larch for top and braces for my first acoustic guitar. But I had perfectly straight and tight grain board. And it was huge mistake, braces gotta be from softer wood - spruce or pine. Are you gonna make one more scrap instrument?

    • @AndersWestfall
      @AndersWestfall 8 місяців тому

      Thank you! Yes, spruce is definitely the best choice for braces. But you can make them thinner and lighter with other kinds of harder wood. I’m going to build many moore instruments, but right now i’m renovating my new old farm and starts soon to build my dream guitar workshop😃

    Any musical instrument is about as better as possible sound, thus the best luthiers spent their lives searching for materials, forms and technics to give musicians the best instruments they could. To me, building a guitar from scrap, is an insult to those masters. Is it all about making the next UA-cam video? More subscribers? Realy?

    • @AndersWestfall
      @AndersWestfall 9 місяців тому

      Hi there. Thank you for your comment. I will say this is a homage to the luthiers techniques, skills and tools. Most luthiers would say that the Choice of wood is not the most important, but it is about what you do with it. As i mentioned in the video series, there is plenty of good reasons to use traditional tonewood. It is easier to work with, more stable, much prettier and there is more reliability what kind of sound you get. But i welcome your opinion and think it is an interesting discussion.😊

      It's about story telling and finding out the story this wood has to tell. Maybe it's a bit ragged and has seen better days. But it's true to itself. I love it!
