My name is Chris and here at Short Pours I provide short reviews of spirits of whisky, rye, and more.
Too many times I found myself in an aisle wondering what bottle to buy for myself or as a present. I'm no expert, I’m on this journey with you. Sadly, most reviews I found were too long, or by experts with nothing in common with me.
So, I created Short Pours! 🥃
Short enough you can watch while shopping, with just enough information to know if it is something you want to try yourself or buy as a gift.

A Sweet Twist on Canadian Spirits 🍁 Maple Whisky
Today I review and talk about *Odd Society’s Maple Whisky* a _Canadian Whisky._ This lusciously delicious and if you’re lucky you might still find a bottle. An ode to the Canadian spirit, Maple Whisky draws many of its unique flavours from the maple tree. This _Canadian Whisky_ comes from Odd Society, who do things a little different here in Vancouver.
SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/@shortpours?sub_confirmation=1
In this _Canadian whisky review_ of *Odd Society’s Maple Whisky* I discuss the colour, nose, and of course the palette and finish. I finish off the review with some discussion on the making of this whisky. For this whisky they smoked their malted barley with maple wood and then age ahe distilled spirit for a minimum of _three years in oak casks_ that were previously _used to age both bourbon and maple syrup_. Jump over to my final reflections if you want to skip the tasting!
*▻ My t8ke score: 7.5 ◅*
Odd Society strikes again with a maple-sweet delicious whisky. It may not be something I will drink every night but it’s really quite exceptional in it’s own unique way.

Can Cheap be This Good? 🇨🇦 J.P. Wiser's 10 Review

Can a $35 whisky be good? Today I review and talk about *J.P. Wiser’s 10* a _10 year old blended Canadian Whisky._ This is a cheap affordable whisky and J.P. Wiser’s isn’t a brand I’ve bought in a long time. But, I thought I would give them another shot. This is a blend of corn and rye, aged 10 years in new white oak, once used American bourbon, and used Canadian whisky casks. This _blended Can...

Would you recommend dipping pancakes in it?
Well you bring up a good question; I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow
Love anything maple!!
Wow super interesting! Awesome video!! Cheers!! 🙂
@@christinecamley thanks! It was so good it sold out entirely already haha. But they recently released a similar Maple Rye too!
Maple Rye sounds fabulous and delicious! I admit I am primarily a high end Islay scotch peat head!!
Islay peat lovers will probably not love this hahah, but I think these unique bottles are still worth a try!
@@shortpours Definitely!!
Damn you got a big forehead
O melhor da linha Johnnie Walker
I know I've been ejoying it!
Cool review - I enjoyed the historical component!
Thanks!
I have the 18year JP wisers and its pretty decent.
JP18!? Haven’t got my hands on that but it’s definitely on my list! I’ve heard good stuff about it too
@shortpours I picked it up a few months back for £50 which is a great price for an 18 year whiskey.
It’s shocking how affordable their whiskies are at the moment. I don’t think they’ll stay that low for long
On my third bottle, I plan on keeping it on hand as long as it's available. $36 - $44 USD, and it's an absolute sherry bomb. I taste Macallan Sherry Cask in there for sure, but it's more interesting because of the blended malt. Is there Highland Park in this as well? I wouldn't be surprised, as well as some Glenrothes. Im guessing the casks selected for this blended malt were not quite up to par for the core range of Macallan and others in the Edrington collection, but that's just a personal theory. Age unknown. Exquisite when blended at home with a smokey Islay and a little bit of Speyside or Highland.🎉
Love everything about your assessment! I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s Highland Park in here either. I think this bottle will be selling for more in no time. I might pickup a few bottles!
Beautiful presentation and perfect description of the prodcut. Thank you for a great video
I appreciate that! My first videos were rough, but they’re definitely coming together a bit better now
$115.00 before taxes! I can get much better in this price point! Love the coastal seaweed! It is nice but on the whole after trying this scotch I won't buy it again. Great video!!
Yea it’s pricey here for what it is… a good drink but THAT good? I’ll pour myself a drink tonight and mull it over again haha
@@shortpours Hey I am going to have a dram tonight too, I will reflect on what I get from this whisky! I love your videos!!
Great whisky. Great price for quality Scotch.
It really is!
An Old Fashioned sounds amazing!!
I think you were my first viewer on this one, thanks 🙌
YW!!
Hey this Irish whiskey isn't bad for cocktails. I prefer single malt scotch but once in awhile this whiskey is nice! Great video!! 🙂
Right? Not a bad whiskey for being so affordable but certainly wouldn’t be my first choice to sip (especially if I’m not eating at the same time)
@@shortpours Right on!! Agreed 100%!! Awesome channel!! Thanks so much!! 🙂
So you click bait a Thumbnail for Sugar Free then Review Regularl. Way to go. Way to earn your "Do Not Recommend". 👍💪💪
Thanks for the concern! Definitely not clickbait (on purpose). If you watch the video again you’ll notice the bottle shots around 0:42 and 1:15 - they both say zero sugar at the bottom of of the front label, not the top of the bottle as they do in the thumbnail. As well, I show the rear nutrition labels which show zero sugar. I also say it’s sweetened with sucralose. It is different packaging (Canadian vs US I believe), but same product. Point well taken though, I’ll see if I can find an identical image for a thumbnail instead of just taking their most recent image from their website, like I did.
This was also one of my earliest videos so I was, and still am, figuring it out as I go. Points like this are helpful, but perhaps don’t assume we are all intentionally being click-baity, when maybe we are actually just making mistakes along the way
Love this!! Fantastic interview and wonderful whiskey
Thanks, I appreciate that 🙌 another distillery interview coming in two weeks…
Great interview, will have to try this one.
🙌 some interesting local and unique flavours, like this one, are worth a try. Macaloney’s just released a sweet-kelp whiskey which I’m keen to try too
As a person who doesn't drink a whole lot of Whiskey, these videos make me want to experiment a bit more. Really enjoyed the bottle you gifted me out camping a couple weeks ago!
Thanks 🙌 the more I drink the more I start to appreciate the subtleties … and all that Canada has to offer in the world of whisky
No idea how this bottle is like 40 USD in my state. It's quite a sherry bomb for being a blended whisky. Considering its pedigree of Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes, the value is ludicrous
Whisky prices have always confused me! Sure, taxes and shipping may impact it a bit we’re in a global market now - like buying an iPhone shouldn’t costs be pretty consistent anywhere you go?
Sounds delicious.
It is! Definitely different, nice and light on the smoke
Excellent review! One of my favorite Irish Whiskeys. I'm a big fan of Bushmills Black Bush too.
Thanks for that 🙏 the sherry cask in Black Bush adds some nice sweetness and cherries if I remember
Great video, great review, great whiskey
Interesting whiskey right? Lots of different things happening! The more I pour it the more I pick up the subtle maple in there which really balances out the rye spice
Sounds interesting! Thanks for the review and good thoughts! Cheers! Love the Rye spice you are getting! Peat is always welcome! Cheers! 🙂
Thanks! Any feedback is appreciated! I love these kinds of surprising mash-up casks
@@shortpours I do too!! Cheers! 🙂
Love bushmills 10yr
Awesome list Chris and a superb idea with those dayes coming up. I think you nailed it with your first suggestions. Naked Malt punches way above its prove category and is at a really admirable price in every single province. Nailed it. Awesome stuff man. Cheers 🥃
That means a lot from you, thank you 🙏 👏. What’s is one of these on this list would swap, and for what?
잘봤어요.
A classic!
I don’t know why, I taste Macallan Gold Double Cask , Highland Park Magnus, but I don’t know what Glenrothes they use to blend or the other whiskey. It’s very interesting whiskey for the price.
Very interesting for the price!! I’m going to have to give it a pour and see if I can pickup that Macallan now…!
😂
Holy sheeeet a canadian that isnt a 80 proof. Ballzy for a canadian brand
😂 you’d be surprised, a lot are getting up there now!
ua-cam.com/users/NakedMalt what do you think, was I on-point?
youtube.com/@PendletonWhisky what do you think, am I on point here? Fingers crossed I can try your Director's Reserve one day!
It is!
Sounds delicious! 😋
It’s really good, I keep returning to it and always surprised how much I like it!
Now to rate them top to bottom
Impossible. But the Macaloney single malt in a Portuguese re-charred wine cask was outrageously good. Sadly none for sale
🥃
My mom has this one collecting dust in her cabinet. Time to give it a try!
It’s worth a try if you’re new to bourbon! Also, sad to let Amy whisky collect dust so put it to work 🙌
Yes please!
Easy drinking bourbon!
I'm new on my bourbon journey. I like Basil Hayden. It really does not seem to get much love and I'm not sure why. I'm in Midwest USA and it is about $35 - $40 USD. Great pour for the price.
I used to love Basil Hayden when I started out too. The more whisky/bourbon I've been drinking over the years the less I find myself buying a bottle of it. But it still stands as an approachable and easy to drink bourbon any day!
@@shortpours Maybe I'll "grow out of it" someday but I just don't understand the snobbery some have about certain bottles. Cheers to you, friend. 🥃
Couldn’t agree more. Too much hoity-toity out there. A good bottle doesn’t need to be a 20yr single malt. There are some great affordable drinks out there! More importantly we all experience things differently so drink what you like, not what people tell you to like
Old Putney 25 yr old!! Just breached!
Now that’s a bottle!
Great review! I must admit, I’ve not tried this whisky myself but it sounds better than I thought, cheers! 🥃
It's surprising for the price! Especially worth trying for people new to whisky. Not very complex so well seasoned drinkers might want to pass. Great for mixing though!
It's a safe, friendly whisky. I always have it in my liquor cabinet.
I might do a comparisons series. Starting with Dalwhinnie 15 or Glenlivet 15. Which would you have on your shelf!?
I may be in the minority here... but I don't enjoy this release. I get a mint note close to the finish that I don't enjoy. It reminds me of Benromach actually which I also didn't like. I wonder if it has to do with the peat? I much prefer Release 36 which was finished in Moscatel Sherry barrels.
Oh I never got to try that one! Interesting to hear about the mint note, I’ll have to give it another pour and see if I can pick it up too!
Maybe you have small hands.
😂
Which alcohol will this pair best with?
😂
But if I had to chose, a bit of rum and vanilla 👌
I buy the homogenized too for the taste. I wish the chocolate milk ver. had more sugars, and to top up the muscle glycogen stores after an 2+ hours endurance event.
I would love to see a chocolate milk that is (1) less sweet and (2) uses real sugar. I’d prefer a little refined sugar of some kind over artificial sweeteners
Cheers Chris just seen this in the UK & I'm doing my due diligence as it isn't cheap thanks for the review, any changes since the neck pour ? Cheers, happy too be your 200th sub.
Thanks for the sub! Since filming this the bottle now is almost half finished and I think it has mellowed out a little. Still sweet, delicious and very approachable. I love it, that hasn’t changed!
@@shortpours I'm sold then, hopefully for a low proof it has some legs, cheers
Based on your excellent review I would very much like to find and try this blend! Complexity is wonderful! It really sounds delicious! I’m a vegetarian but I can think of some delicious foods to try and pair a wonderful blend with or just to sip after dinner!! Cheers!
Hi! I will try this Rye for sure! It sounds lovely! Have you tried the Alberta Premium Rye Cask Strength?! It has a huge punch and I do enjoy it but it’s powerful! Fabulous spice! Cheers!
Pendleton isn’t quite as punchy, I prefer it over AP. Not exactly a High West but for its price it’s fantastic
@@shortpours Yes absolutely terrific for the price!
Great suggestions! Feel free to make longer videos - you are interesting to listen to! and I’d love to see some peated scotch reviews if you enjoy that type of single malt scotch! Cheers!
I liked this style! I go to Rye for the spice, dill, mint and the other classic Rye qualities and I got some of them here! It’s a bit sweet for me but not too much. I definitely get the toffee and cinnamon on the finish. I prefer Lot 40 for a Canadian Rye but this Reifel Rye isn’t bad at all and for $45 a bottle I think that is very reasonable! I like a good punch with a strong Rye, ideally at a higher ABV and this did lack that. But overall? It’s pretty good and I would say this is perfect for a person new to whisky and wanting to try Rye! Cheers! Awesome video!
Whoops! My message below jumbled up a bit! Sorry! I proofread afterwards! Lol!! Nice dram but too pricey here in YVR!!
