The USB will read from an attached drive. I found out that it would also read from my old iPod Classic 160gb, though artwork with the iPod is hit and miss (probably related to my setup, but not sure). The USB will also work as an output to an external DAC. It does not work as an access point to the internal DAC via a PC or iPad, though.

Out of curiosity, how would music playback help the review? Curious, because whatever I played would come through whatever speakers you are listing to and would be compressed anyway. Please let me know.

I am using the internal DAC, but I have seen some discussion of this on Facebook and other forums. Some like coax and others have liked USB. I don’t think there is a consensus. If you can wait on AudioScience Review of it, he might test the different outputs.

Yes, that should work. I started the casting stream from BBC Sounds and rebooted my phone and it never dropped the signal.

I do not have any files to test, but according to their 8/2/24 firmware update "DSD Playback Enhancement - Now supports playing DSD audio tracks in DFF format."

Click bait? 😂 I don’t think you know what that means. It’s not monetized. Are you going to trust my judgement on SQ? We don’t hear the same, so it comes down to measurements, so wait until ASF measures it. I think it sounds great and you can tweak the sound with EQ to make it more to your liking. Hope that helps. My review was about the features… which is still a review.

The device also has digital outputs to send to a different DAC if you aren’t a fan of the onboard sound after tweaking the EQ.

Not enough space to give all my thoughts. I may put up a video later on why some people want AirPlay. Also, your statement is wrong. Some apps use an AirPlay 1 protocol and are lossless to 24/48. Anyway, look for a future video on the subject.

This video is showing the many ways you can use the device. In hindsight, I probably should have mentioned that if you don’t care about AirPlay multiroom options, you can use Bluetooth which is built into the Ultra.

Hope you are right. The article said it would never come, which is hard to believe. I would think there would be some software option, but time will tell.

I would recommend their Wiim Mini for two reasons..1 it has optical out so you can connect it directly to the Ultra's optical input. If you want to put it in a separate system later you can, but still be able to send Airplay 2 to it and connect it to the Ultra via their multi-room link option. Next, I would recommend the Belkin Airplay 2 streamer (the one with optical out). It is usually a little cheaper than the Wiim Mini.

A side note, I believe some of the old AppleTvs. (version 3 and earlier, if I remember correctly..though they may be Airplay 1 ) have optical output, so that could be an option, as well. While I am using AirPort Express 1st gen, I would not necessarily recommend this version or newer versions (some of the newer versions got an Airplay 2 update) because they are a bit more work to setup.

If you are asking if you can browse a music service on the LCD screen without a phone, I do not believe that is currently possible. The included remote has Alexa built in, so if you subscribe to Amazon Music, you can request music without a phone. Jut hit the voice button and tell it what to play. You can also play music to it using other Alexa devices like the Echo Dot. If you have a Google Home, it can cast to it without a phone.

I would think that would work, but probably depends on your TV and how you are listening to the music (Airplay or directly with the Apple TV).

People are used to Airplay, so not having it is the biggest issue with this specific device. I do agree that they need some kind of connect feature like Sonos, Spotify, Tidal, etc.

Sorry, haven’t tested the usb. I remember reading it was still in beta. I would expect them to update that. I know some of the outputs have to be changed on the app, so may try that if you haven’t already.

I connected a USB DAC this morning and put on. "Dookie" from Amazon Music and the read out shows 192. I don't have it connected to an Amp, so no idea what is coming out the other end, but the DAC is getting a 192 signal.

I don’t use Tidal for a few reasons. First, when I tried it, I just hated the app. I am sure it has changed, but it just didn’t focus on my tastes like other apps. 2. They went with MQA. I don’t need them to push me into buying new equipment when it isn’t necessary. 3. Amazon also has hi res and it’s cheaper ( I already have Prime)and works fabulously with the Wiim. 4. I like the way Amazon works with the Echo Show in my office. It allows me to play and pause music while I am working by voice. I also use it in the living room that way, but not as often. If you like Tidal, I am not advocating for you to change, but I recommend giving Amazon a free trial if you have similar needs and Prime.

Glad to hear you are getting your toes wet! The external DAC offers better performance than the internal DAC of the Wiim. Some record players have a built in phono stage, so perhaps they were referring to something like that. My cheaper turntable has a switch allowing you to use its phono stage or sending the output to an outboard phono stage.

Yes, just be aware that some receivers will not accept 24/192 via optical. I had to get an optical to coax adapter to take advantage of 24/192 with my Denon Receiver.

I can’t comment on every app. I only tested those that were mentioned in the video. Obviously, every app that plays gapless on the phone will play gapless with AirPlay, so I guess you could say they all have potential to be gapless. May just depend on how you get audio to the Wiim.

You go to the Clockology Facebook account and search for Tag. Most of mine are Monaco versions, so typing in that description also helps.

The watch will connect to any speakers you have connected to your phone. In my case, this is mainly Airplay2 devices. I have AppleTVs, HomePods, Wiim Minis (see my other video on this device), and receivers with it built in. The phone or watch (via the phone) can play back on any or all of these and you can make the selections from the watch. Outside of that, if you have a bluetooth speaker, you can also connect it, but it will not have the multiroom functionality of Airplay2 speakers.

No test is set up to prove you can’t hear a difference. They are setup to prove you can hear a difference. Let’s say you are 50/50 on an ABX test. You could have actually heard a difference 50 percent time, but no test is setup to prove that. Secondly, 5.1s main limit is the mastering. It is hit and miss. If Wiim processed a 2 channel signal to 5.1, you aren’t getting a true master… more like a DSP mode on receiver. Not my thing. Also, I could care less about Roon, but Wiim has Roon support on their future roadmap. Thank you for the comment.

I can definitely understand only wearing it. I have a nice Omega I put on for special occasions, but could live with only the AW in airplane mode if I didn’t have the other watch laying around.

It would take too long to dig them up. You need to download the Clockology app and then go to Facebook and join their site. There is a very useful search tool at the top, but you may have to scroll down to find the exact face. I believe you have to use Facebook in the browser rather than the app.

For normal use with this device you need wifi or Bluetooth. For wifi, you could use AirPlay to send any audio from your phone to the device. You could do the same with Bluetooth. Bluetooth compressed audio, so it probably won’t sound as good as wifi, but i wouldn’t call it “muffled”. As for its aux out, it is pretty good. Stereophile reviewed that aspect of the Wiim and they were pleasantly surprised. You could add a DAC down the road if you wanted to get more resolution. Should also note that I believe the Wiim needs wifi just to open the app. I am not sure Bluetooth would work without it getting wifi. You may want to check with Wiim on that.

If you are using iOS, you can AirPlay UA-cam Music to it. If on Android, you would need to use Bluetooth.

It does work with Amazon HD. I have a separate video on the beta… but it is now live. This month they also added gapless to their (up to) 24/192 Alexa casting feature ( meaning you use the Amazon app instead of a third party app). I believe it has Tidal connect. Which is similar, but I am not sure about MQA.

The optical output is bit perfect (measures well), so in that case it would depend on the DAC. Stereophile has a review with measurements of both the analog and optical out. Audioscience forum also has measurements. All in all, you are best off to connect it to a DAC that has optical in and does 24/192 through that input. There are some products that only allow 24/96 via optical ( which I show in the video). I picked up a Sanskrit DAC which I like with it.

I am less concerned about Darko than the incorrect information he put out in that video that may steer people away from an amazing ( for the price) product. He is obviously doing okay in the UA-cam reviewer world, so this video was more about getting the correct information out. Thanks for commenting. It is always appreciated.

It is always interesting to see reviews of stuff I actually have experience with, but unfortunately it often leads to me trusting reviewers less. I also had this type of experience with the HomePod and the Audioscience review, so sad to say this isn’t an isolated case.

I don’t have any direct experience, but I believe that is an Android box and resamples audio to 48k, but maybe someone else can confirm this.

I don’t know if you noticed, but they updated the app for Amazon a couple days ago, so it is no longer beta. I didn’t get a chance to look at it, but it should make Amazon Music users very happy if they didn’t change anything.

As I mentioned in the video, he may not have the most recent firmware. However, given the channel’s popularity in the USA, he should have contacted WiiM and let people know there was some issue since he lives in Berlin (if that was the issue). He didn’t do that, so a large portion of his audience got incorrect information.

I don’t use Roon, so I am not sure what “offkey” refers to. Roon is currently supported via AirPlay. They had a future firmware upgrade at one point that would add Roon native support, but I wouldn’t buy it based on a projected possible feature.

I have no way to test whether it is 24 bits or not. It does change to 96, 192, etc on the fly, though.

Have you gone into settings and changed steaming quality to HD/Ultra? You may have chosen Best Available which could be sent out at a lower resolution. Also, if the Beta is installed you should see “beta” in the name of the WiiM you are choosing. If you don’t see “beta”, you could try logging out of Amazon in the WiiM app and logging back in. Good luck!

I would try a different cable and if that didn’t work, return it. As far as hi res, you need to be sure you are sending it a hi res signal and that you have changed the speaker to allow for hi res. It has a way to send out a test signal. Most of my devices with an optical input do not accept a signal above 96khz, so you want to be sure his speaker is capable of hi res over optical. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I don’t. They have a page on their website called “ what’s new” that has planned upcoming dates. It says 6/30 has a “public preview” of Amazon and I don’t see much after that. I would recommend asking them ( via their support page) for the beta if you want hi res Amazon.

I am curious…what are your deal breakers?
