Her insecurities and self doubts were the result of her inexperience and young age. If only Max would have told her he loathed his ex wife things would have been easier for the poor girl.

Hitchcock was SUCH a great director. When the "happy couple" enter the great hall at Manderley, the rows of servants -- ostensibly assembled by Mrs. Danvers to "welcome" them -- are clearly meant to come off as Defenders Of The Manor, lined up on the ramparts to repel an invader -- in this case, the gauche, unworthy successor to the beautiful, glittering dead queen. (Take a look at Mrs. de Winter's look of shock, bordering on horror, when she catches her first look at Manderley as they approach in the car. "I'm supposed to LIVE here? Entertain people here? Run this huge place? WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?") Mrs. Van Hopper was a monster-times-ten, but her acid comments ("I simply can't see you doing it....you haven't any idea what it means to be a great lady") were dead-on accurate. And -- just to twist the knife further -- that's exactly why Maxim married her. After the unmitigated fiasco of his first marriage, he wanted somebody shy, hesitant and unsure of herself, whom he could dominate absolutely. As one critic observed "The hapless heroine goes from being a doormat to one rich, bossy, unfeeling person to being exactly the same thing to a second."

When Van Hopper is telling her story of when she was younger that a man would dart down a hallway away from her was because he was in love with her.🤣

The actress playing Mrs. van Hopper is excellent, a great supporting player. She helps set things up perfectly, alluding to Rebecca's beauty and Maxim's love for her, all while feeding into the second Mrs. de Winter's insecurities. And she's funny the entire time. This actress was also in A Letter to Three Wives, pivotal to the hilarious dinner scene with Thelma Ritter, Kirk Douglas and Ann Sothern. If you haven't seen it yet... what are you waiting for??

I love this film more than I can express. Yes, it is very much a work of its time, and some of the melodrama can seem over the top. But just admire the craftsmanship, the incredible stark beauty, of the story, the staging, all of it. Oh gosh, I sound like Ms. Danvers now, don't I? "Have you ever seen something so delicate? Look! You can see my hand through them..."

You certainly don't have to be a MeToo feminist to feel that the marriage portrayed in both the book and the film of "Rebecca" is fairly revolting. On their first day at Manderley, Maxim can't even be bothered to show his new wife the layout of this huge house, so that she has to ask the servants where the morning room is -- the place where she, as mistress of the house, is expected to conduct her daily business. She has myriad responsibilities overseeing the staff, which he never explains to her; and in general treats her almost as badly as her former employer Mrs. Van Hopper did. Ironically, "Jane Eyre", written a century earlier in 1845, and to which "Rebecca" is often compared, portrayed a man and a woman in a far more mature and sophisticated relationship than the de Winters ever have. Jane is a woman of intelligence, passion and courage, who doesn't let Rochester get away with any highhandedness in his treatment of her. When he finally proposes, he says to her "Here before me stands my equal." In 1845! Jane would, I think, have considered the second Mrs. de Winter to be a fairly pathetic simp.

Laughing at comments that criticize Olivier portrayal of Maxim Delimiter and decry that all American actor, Clark Gable, would've been the better choice for the roll of British aristocrat. Lawrence Olivier is often described as the greatest actor of the twentieth century with a grand theatre and major theatrical awards that carry his name as tribute to his legacy. Gable is memorable for his appearance in It Happened One Night and Gone with the Wind. No one appearing in Rebecca was miscast. I love this movie, especially now that I can UA-cam videos on my 46" HDTV.

Totally agree! Clark Gable as Maxim de Winter?????!!! No way! I read the book as a teenager, years before seeing the film version, but I remember the first time I did see this movie, I thought Olivier was the PERFECT Maxim....can't imagine anyone else in the role. Also, I really can't see an American actor pulling this off....

I didn’t view this film until years after I read “Rebecca.” Olivier nailed Maxim deWinter. Handsome, stylish and unnervingly neurotic. The quintessential trauma/abuse survivor disguised as a “man with everything.” I don’t favor Gable as Max.

This song is entitled : " ma petite amie a fichu le camp " which means in english : " my girlfriend is gone." Music by : Mort Shuman Lyrics by : Catherine Breillat The presumably singer is in reality an actor. Thus the real singer of this song remains unknown to this day. Unfortunately this great song was never released just like the entire soundtrack of the movie.

Joan Fontaine and her beautiful sister Olivia DeHavilland have never revealed the reason for the falling out that lasted throughout their adult lives. Maybe they thought they would have time. On Ms.Fontaine's passing, Ms.DeHavilland broke her silence only to express her grief and profound sense of loss. A lesson worth remembering.
