"The Crohn's Cyclist" is a channel dedicated to helping raise awareness and bring support to those suffering from Crohn's Disease or other similar health issues.
Recently diagnosed with a severe case of Crohn's Disease (Jan. 6th, 2024), I (channel owner, Josiah Boda) strive to help encourage others to keep pursuing their dreams, goals, and ambitions even when faced with obstacles seemingly impossible to overcome.
This is my journey to becoming the best I can be as a cyclist (as well as other areas in life)!

Super solid, Josiah - great push and power at the end - especially after the efforts you put down yesterday. Despite the fact that I'm more of a sprinter, this is my favorite route to race on Zwift - the climbs challenge me in all the right ways with just enough rest in between the efforts. But . . . for me it's also one of those routes that I know I need to get a rest day and come in fresh for or I just won't be competitive. I need to be 30 again 😅 This is a route where I have to measure my efforts on the early climbs and save enough for the real selection point on Temple KOM which always pushes me to the limit. Then just enough time to rest and recover before what is usually a nasty one-two punch on that corkscrew climb and ramp into Shisa sprint (although your group took the corkscrew a little lighter). I never hit that finish banner with even an ounce left in the tank after that final climb and sprint. 😅 Looking forward to messing with it on week 6 Tour de Zwift.
It is a really fun course to race! It's true! I definitely need to make sure I am really fresh when I do this course. Those tough climbs are.. tough. Looking forward to us riding one of these together sometime!

Yep! Definitely! I just noticed that zwiftpower.com dropped one of my efforts since it fell out of the 90 day range. So it shows me back down to A rider for me. Looks like I need to do another 20min effort to get that back up. Which I have been meaning to do one pretty soon. Should be some iTTs coming up soon for me to do one. Haha

I had thought to join you and Josh on this route this morning but the 6 am start was a little rough for me . . . now that I see the pace you all put down on the KOMs, that was probably for the best. If I'm going to be sleepy eyed at 6 am racing with you, it probably needs to be on the flats.😅😅

Haha. Yep. I was hoping it would be a flatter route and us DIRT guys would do a timed attack and then try to TTT away from the field. But they only had climbing routes picked for this week. Oh well. Next time!
@joshvillen I was trying catch you. Haha. Started too slow though. Was crazy that I was only 9seconds slower from the time of my first climb but I did 43watts less than the 1st climb.... staying back and drafting helps so much on that climb. Wow.
@ 100% - it's very draftable - when I did the 8 am version of this, I drafted most of the way up - anywhere from 20W all the way up to 60+W of draft savings which adds up on a ~5 min climb . . . and I need all the help I can get 😅
@ I did this route twice and I got 6 aero powerups across both attempts. . . and both times I got feather at the end of the 2nd climb at the banner 🤣 For this ride though, I'm surprised Josiah had anything left after that 1st KOM . . . that solid block of red all the way up. . . and then he gets to the crest and decides to keep the power down another 20 seconds to get the 5 min PB. I'm dead if I try to follow that and mentally devastated when he keeps going at the crest 😅

Why are you in C heat?
It’s just how the TdZ group rides work. The A B C cat is just the route selection, it’s not a race.
For TdZ, A, B, C just indicate length of route, Short, Standard, Long. It's a mass start, non-category group ride - there's usually a race at the front but it's not formally constructed or recognized as one.

lol . . . well . . . you got one heck of an interval workout anyway 😅 also, on the bright side, your fitness is strong enough that you were almost able to succeed despite the mistakes. but yes, speeds are so fast on these flat stages, especially at your weight, you just have to stay deep in the draft or be punished.
Right! A few times I wasn't quite sure if I'd make it back on. Group was small enough though and not everyone would drive the pace to keep it high.

So true. And other teams would protect their sprinters and start lead out trains for them to bring any breakaway back. Was worth a try since I know a lot of those guys will always outsprint me.

Knew I could count on you for a little help! 😉😉 Jon said we'd take the second climb slower at around 6 w/kg. So I started up it at just under 6 w/kg. Then saw he was doing 7w/kg on the front with the rest doing 6.5 w/kg in his draft. Welp. That made me get a 3-4s gap off the back. Was going to try to dig deep and do a hard 7 w/kg push right before the bridge. But might not have had the legs for it anyway. Was still a good time for all of us!
@@thecrohnscyclist YES!, Jon always does that. 3rd Doppio with only 4 A+ riders against two teams fully stacked with 8 A+ riders. We definitely did well. We lost 10seconds each time on the bypass, such a brutal segment

Thanks! I actually enjoyed that quite a bit. I can see how it can be demoralizing to other guys if they see 4-5 DIRT Jersey guys who are helping cover moves and saving their good sprinters for the finish. Then doing a lead out train so others can't attack. Really fun to do!

I literally thought the same thing. I had no clue it was included until the last 5 minutes when I realized the course was ending but we still have 1.5 miles left in the race. Then I realized it would take us back up the ZWIFT KOM again. I was so salty. Haha.

Yes. Always so tough to try to maintain good speed doing those. But was able to do them well to catch back up! Very happy about that.

Yep! That has happened to me before and I was afraid of that. Going down the Alp and resting then the legs just won't hold power after that rest from the descent. But today I was still able to hold the same power after the descent that I was going up the Alp. So definitely think I was pacing myself well!
I made the mistake and did the Mountain Masiff race and just did not think about it before I entered. I got destroyed. I do not DNF but seeing you do the radio tower makes my legs shake. LOL and you are doing the Four Horseman. Damn son. Mine was like 24 miles.
Haha. Nice! This one hurt a lot. Felt like I paced it well. Still hurt so much. Totally got dropped on the radio tower KOM. Had to try to get myself back in the group by descending as best I could.
@@thecrohnscyclist IMHO your pacing was perfect. I am watching as I type but you got that final climb where win or not. I just wonder if the bike/wheel combo can be the difference maker. Confusing when rider goes supertuck. Also maybe me but the asian bot pisses me off, 39 seconds and gaining as we start the hill. Zwift should be able to just get them off the screen during the race.
Definitely bike choice and wheels would help a lot. But FRR has everyone fixed on one of the heaviest bikes. If I could have used the lightest bike and then lightest wheels, I would have saved around 1 and a half minutes. I still could have used the lightest wheels. But it would have saved me only about 20 seconds. And then if I used the fastest disc wheels on the descent, I would have saved 15 seconds. So only 5 second difference. Figured it wasn't worth switching since it takes me about 8-10 seconds to switch. And then another 8-10 seconds to switch back once I got to the top.

It was nice with us staying so well organized in the pace line. Imagine what we could do with a good team of 8! And all with steering! Maybe next time

For sure! Definitely would help! Team relentless will usually always have at least 4 teammates in each race. Today they had like 6 or 7. So definitely making it hard. Haha
As a non sprinter I thought this stage was horrid , had to do the sprints just to stay with the group which ruined my legs for the climb ,but managed a 5th in the D pen well happy . Good luck for the rest of the tour especially stage 8 😮😮
Nice! I feel we are in the same boat. If I try to do an all out sprint, I still get beat by the big sprinters by a lot. So I don't try to sprint. But I still have to semi sprint each time just to stay with the group. I would rather try to get in a breakaway and just do steady power rather than all this sprinting then easing off then sprinting etc. Same to you! Good luck on the rest of the stages! Rooting for you!
