The Battle of Imphal
In 2013 The British National Army Museum conducted a poll to determine “Britains Greatest Battle”, the outcome may have come as a surprise for many, while the likes of Waterloo and D-Day often take centre stage in the mind of many, the winner of the poll was the often overlooked but crucial battles at Imphal and Kohima during the Burma Campaign.

The book covers several important topics, including faith, loyalty and forgiveness, all which are incredibly relevant...
Lions of The Jungle - Orde Wingate and The Chindits

In February 1943, a large group of allied special forces soldiers set off on their first mission behind enemy lines, they would fight in the hot, stifling Burmese jungle, led by a onion eating misfit by the name of Orde Wingate. The Chindits would go on to write their name in history as one of Britains most fearless and unconventional forces deployed during the Second World War. #burma #india #...

1:17 that parade must have been post war as that jeep is an early M38 or even possibly a CJ2a. Either way, the vehicle belongs to the Indian Army as the British never used them, preferring to soldier on with the wartime MBs and GPWs until eventually superseded by the Series 2 Landrover. (We'll ignore the blind alley that was the Austin Champ.)

The 14th Army and Slim really were a special bunch who have never been given the credit they deserve. I've said it before and will say it again. I believe Montgomery would have been an utter failure in the Burma theatre, but Slim would have been just as good, if not better in North Africa and Europe.

Maybe, maybe not, but projecting what we know no onto what happened in the past is not a good idea. You can't view what men did in WW2 through a modern lens. They fought for what they believed in back then and believed it would make a difference. We can ask that if they could see what the world is like now, would they have bothered, but it's a mute point. You could equally ask what the world would be like now if Germany and Japan had got their way.

Great article. My dad was a Chindit and a Desert Rat. He was in The Royal Leicestershire Regiment and prior to Burma had been in Palestine, Syria, North Africa, The relief of Tobruk and Crete. Trained in the then Ceylon and India. He took part in Operation Longcloth and Operation Thursday. He spoke of Wingate, Mad Mike Calvert and Bernard Ferguson. He suffered from recurrent bouts of malaria for the rest of his life. He proudly wore the Desert Rat badge and Chindit badges on his blazers. He was 5' 6", nine stone, shy and unassuming and I simply can't imagine what he and his mates went through. The Chindits simply did not get the recognition they deserved... The Forgotten Fourteenth.

I think a lot of modern warfare is being looked at with fresh eyes and questioning the reasons for war are always valid and appropriate. However, that should never, in my opinion, degrade the point of valour medals and the type of men who were awarded them. Often the "ordinary soldier" who was fighting for his own life, as well as those men around him. I am, and always will be, against war. But I do watch these men with utter respect and admiration. 🌹🕊

However, my choice of wording for the title of the video, is by no means a disrespectful term. An article from the Australian War Memorial page sums it up best for me, and I’ve linked it here below! ⬇️ www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/why-it-not-incorrect-speak-winning-victoria-cross#:~:text=It%20is%20often%20asserted%20that,or%20some%20other%20bravery%20award.
